Where to Get Eye-Opening Cold Brew and Seasonal Coffee Drinks in Seattle

"Fuel is a coffee shop and bookstore with locations in Capitol Hill, Montlake, and Wallingford. It uses the sci fi-sounding Kyotobot (a robotic glass dripper) to make its cold brew (though it’s called “iced coffee” on the menu). You can also give their flash brewing system a try — that’s when a cafe makes a coffee concentrate through normal pour-over methods, then adds ice to dilute and chill it." - Rachel Hopke, Harry Cheadle, Eater Staff

Filipino Food Truck CheBogz Launches Kickstarter for New Beacon Hill Restaurant - Eater Seattle

"Fuel Coffee officially announced their rebranding as Fuel Coffee & Books on Instagram. Fuel’s three cafes — in Capitol Hill, Wallingford, and Montlake — will keep some nods to their funky 60s-inspired aesthetic roots and “rocket fuel,” but now with “books for the caffeinated mind.” It’s a rebrand that’s been in the works ever since Fuel cafes were acquired by the owners of Ada’s Technical Books, husband and wife Danielle and David Hulton." - Mark Van Streefkerk

Very cute coffee shop / book store. The location is small and cozy, perfect for hanging an getting some work done. The chairs are a little uncomfortable but pretty standard for a coffee shop. The store offers a nice selection of drinks and books, I went with an iced oat milk latte and a scone. The latte was decent and the scone was a little plain for the cost. Overall the store is worth checking out and working from.

Overall: 5/25* *See bio for detailed review system ⭐️ INTOLERABLE/AVOID Food 0/5 Chunky unblended matcha powder on the bottom of my cup. $6.50 for a small cup of lukewarm milk. The only good part was the first sip of foam. Service 0/5 This might’ve been the rudest barista encounter I’ve ever experienced. It was exactly 4:30 (they close at 5 PM) on Friday 11/15 when I ordered a matcha latte and asked for it for here. The barista proceeded to dump the ingredients in a to go cup so I repeated my request thinking she didn’t hear me. Her snarky response: “We’re closing soon. I don’t want to wash your cup.” Had the guest in front of me not ordered and received a mug of matcha right in front of me, I would’ve chalked this up to standard policy of the cafe refusing to serve customers in ceramics 30 before closing. Then 12 minutes before closing she hounded us to leave and left the environment incredibly unpleasant. I’m in full support of shops closing on time but it’s the consistent lack of professionalism and poor service* that leads me to think this barista is a singular point of negative experiences at Fuel Cafe. *See multiple negative reviews before mine complaining about the same barista. Ambiance 4/5 It’s such a shame that this lovely book store cafe is manned (womanned) by such a negative employee. The overall vibe is a collection of well curated fiction, non fiction, young adult & children’s books alongside cute stickers & small business good. Plenty of seating and overall impeccable ambiance for a quick chat or study break. Value 1/5 Drink quality poor, service poor, ambiance has the potential to be cozy and amazing barred by the barista’s consistent rude attitude / not doing what’s she’s literally paid (and tipped to do - the cafe has a built-in 20% tip).

This shop has me torn. I've visited a couple times and I enjoy the overall retro design of the shop, the mid-century modern furniture, the book shelves and coffee gear offerings, but the coffee and food has been just ok. I most recently ordered the KyotoBot coffee which is made from their cold percolation towers and it reminded me of a cut cold brew, just not as exciting as I was hoping. Also ordered a lye roll which was kinda dry but I didn't have super high expectations for it. The baristas were chill and they had some retail roasts for $15 at 12oz so I appreciate that. But overall, I would say it leaves a lot to be desired but thanks to the many seating options makes for a relaxing spot to study/ catch up with a friend/ read a book

Fuel coffee is my favorite coffee shop. I love the selection of books they have, their coffee drinks are perfect, and the atmosphere is the perfect balance of cozy, modern and minimalist. I got the seasonal rosemary latte iced, and it was delicious.

Google
I was walking by this coffee shop and noticed a sandwich board with specialty drinks outside. I love specialty drinks and out of 5 listed on the board I wanted to try 3. I picked the most unusual one which was a lemon drop latte ($6.20). It was amazing and I regret not getting the biggest size because I finished my 8oz cup in two sips (: It tasted exactly like a lemon drop cake. They change their specialty drinks every season. They use housemade syrups for specialty beverages which is a big plus in my book. They also have a website with their regular menu online. The cafe itself is very light and welcoming. It’s also great that the baristas get predictable wage, I wish more cafe owners did that.

Google
Showed up with 12 guys ready for some post-run coffee and socializing… online and on the door said 6:30am opening we waited till 7 no one ever showed up. Ruining the close of our event. Definitely will not relay or try to use this location in the future.

Google
Amazing! Great pride edition lavender and matcha latte served by Cairo, she was very fast, personable and had a warm welcoming attitude, came in for a latte and came out with a book that had the cutest review from one of the staff members “Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe” very excited to read it and come back to the shop! :)

Yelp
The baristas are super rude and their coffee is bitter. The inside of the coffee shop is nice though.

Yelp
What an adorable coffee shop and bookstore combo! I had an hour or so before a work meeting nearby, so thought this would be a great place to pop in and get a few emails done! I grabbed one of their seasonal coffees and a pastry. Both were delicious! However, I would definitely come here for the ambiance; I love being surrounded by books and, while the selection is small, it is well stocked with everything from YA to romance to a robust nonfiction section.

Yelp
Came by here on a Friday around 10:30AM and it was busy! Luckily I was able to snag a high top chair looking out the window. I ordered their seasonal rosemary latte ($7.50). It was very warm and frothy, with a subtle rosemary taste. I'm pretty sure they make their syrups in-house so they had a few options to select from. They also have the assortment of Torani syrup flavors to choose from too. The two making my coffee and taking my order were very helpful and nice to chat with as I was deciding which drink to order. I spent about two hours there drinking my latte and studying. It was a nice atmosphere for studying. I'd definitely come back again!

Yelp
Consistently delicious coffee drinks and an awesome, big space (full of a very thoughtful selection of books) to sit and do work. The baristas are all lovely, incredibly knowledgeable and good at what they do! Love love this spot when I'm in the neighborhood and in need of a pick me up.

Yelp
This is such a cute and lovingly decorated coffee shop. When we came in they were giving out free drip coffees and free cardamom lattes. We had the (free) cardamom latte and a matcha one, to which both pleasantly surprised us! I probably wouldn't have tried the cardamom latte if it wasn't free (had no clue what that would taste like!), and I'm really glad I was enticed to get it. The people who work here also seem to care for each other, and really their business and customers as well. I found in the bathroom a collection of menstrual products for customers to take if they needed some. Rare to find that at businesses! Came out of this place overall quite fueled up with energy and in a great mood.

Yelp
I do not have pleasant experiences here because early in the day, there is only one girl working and waiting 5 minutes per customer can be excruciating. She is also not the friendliest of the bunch, and hardly seems to care. The space is cute, and that's about it. The coffee is average and overpriced. The books on the shelf are only of popular ones - it's like walking into a Barnes&Noble, except this place doesn't support local authors.

Yelp
Service was bad and very slow. The barista was extremely rude to me and to multiple customers I heard them interact with. Patronizing and straight up mean. Makes me not want to come back ever again to be honest.

Yelp
Great coffee but prices are higher than advertised. I checked on their website menu and it says $2.95 for 8 oz drip to go, $5 for berry scone. I saw upon arriving that the coffee is now $3.20, ok no big deal, website hasn't been updated. However my order of these two items came to $9.59. Even with 10.25% sales tax it is not that high. I wasn't given the option to add a tip so I did wonder if tip is included and if so, that's fine, but it didn't say that anywhere so I'm left to assume tip was not included. Also the scone was wrapped in plastic and appeared to be day old, was definitely not fresh that day and other scones were under glass and not plastic wrapped. I understand if there is no discount but I was still a little set aback at the $9.59 price on a day old scone and small drip to go. Won't be returning. Despite this the coffee was good. Really well done on that front.

Yelp
I came to Fuel around 9:30 AM on a Wednesday, desperate for a place to sit and take a work meeting. Having simply looked on maps for the nearest cafe, I'm fortunate to have ended up here - the cutest coffee shop with lots of seating, large tables, a bright atmosphere, and enthusiastic baristas. It was relatively quiet at this time, great for my call. I ordered an iced matcha latte with oat milk and vanilla as a sweetener. Note that the matcha they use is unsweetened, but they offer sweeteners such as vanilla and honey to customize your drink. Kudos to the barista for letting me know this up front! The latte itself was more on the milky side, but that's what I prefer anyway. I can tell that this is a place that takes care of its customers. When I told the barista that I was running late for a meeting as I was waiting to pay (you pay when you receive your drink), I asked her if I could pay up front and pick it up from the counter when I could. She was so nice as to just place it next to me while I was sitting at my meeting, which I appreciated so much! The only downside is that there's not a designated parking lot, but know there are a lot of street parking spaces nearby. Will definitely be back when I'm in the area!

Yelp
The barista was so friendly & really knowledgeable about the coffee. I love the bright ambiance and the fact that they have a ton of seating and books! My latte was super smooth and had a really cute latte art heart. Just moved to the neighborhood and this will be my go-to spot. The music was pleasant and not too loud. Would definitely bring my laptop to work a bit or go to read. They sell coffee beans and can also grind them for you. Will try next time!

Yelp
The matcha was 1/5. It was somehow warm despite being iced? And it just did not taste right. It also was $7.50 despite no flavors or anything special. Not worth the time.
google avatar

Yelp
Great coffee. Great vibe. Great space- old wood and high ceilings. Delicious baked goods. Awesome baristas. Like much of Seattle, LGBTQ support was demonstrated by the flag on the wall. Free wifi. Patio out back. Only complaint is parking is an absolute nightmare. This is more of a "locals" communicty cafe that you walk or bike to. There is literally no parking lot or street parking. There are a few spots behind this row of stores that everyone jockies for. In a word- exactly everything you expect in a neighborhood cafe in seattle.
google avatar

Erin C.

Yelp
The coffee is fine. But the pastry selection is poor. Besides being small and pricey, they won't heat anything up for you. At least, the barista wrinkled up his nose and said "no", when I asked if my chocolate croissant could be heated. So, I spent $5 for a cold, dry croissant with a hard chocolate nugget in the core. Awesome.
google avatar

Cyn C.

Yelp
The coffee is great, but kind of weird that a fairly small-business coffee shop in Seattle doesn't let you tip the baristas. It's a normal part of our culture out here to show appreciation with a tip. It should at least be an option.
google avatar

Yelp
I only give them 4 out of 5 (let's round up to 4.5) because the menu is so basic, there's no parking (even though I walked to it - still helpful to note) and it's kinda pricey. They have safety precautions in place, however with the register being so close to the door if there is any noise on the street it's hard to hear the barista. Aside from the basic coffee choices, there was also food available, but only limited quantities of the pastries. I got a cappuccino (plain, 8oz - $4.50 or maybe it was $5?) and a chocolate muffin ($??). Total came to $10.73...so IMO that was a bit pricey for what I got... Cappuccino was pretty standard though tasty, I just forgot how small 8oz actually was! The muffin was very moist, however it got less tasty as I ate through it and I did not finish it... Maybe it was vegan or organic or took the flavor of the bag it was in, I'm not sure...but I'd stick to just "coffee" if I were to go back.

Yelp
Coffee amazing, books addictive, breakfast burritos and quick snacks to pickuo for work lunch- evryones alwags super nice. Why I love living in a city.

Sally D.

Yelp
Gorgeous coffee shop with great seating areas. Big windows give you a great view of the road, and a nice seating area outback is a great place to read. I got an americano which was delicious. The hand pies were good. I tried the taco/burrito type things, but it was mid day and they could not have been more soggy and gross. The pastries looked good, although I have not tried one. The service is quick and they guy working was very nice. It is also a small book store with some good reads. Definitely a nice place to work or relax.

Yelp
Tried fuel coffee a few weeks ago and came to get some work done while I drank coffee (we love wifi). The staff was very polite and courteous. They have a nice selection of drinks and some great looking snacks as well. They have very standard drink offerings but what really stands out is the nice vibe inside. They have plenty of books that you can purchase and perhaps browse while you sip your coffee.

Miinno N.

Yelp
Now it is NOT CLOSED. It is back and really great. We love the spacious bright store with lots of new books. It is a couple blocks away from a part of Arboretum which is a big plus for somebody who just wants to stop by for a cup of coffee. Also it's very close to the library so it's perfect for somebody who wants to take a little break after the library and go there. Also, the books they sell and I believe you can look at have HUGE selections of books for adults and little ones.

Yelp
Jetlag it is hard on our first official day in Seattle, so we were up bright and early. Luckily, Fuel opens at 7:00 AM. We were able to snag a breakfast as well as some delicious drinks. I got a latte. While the foam design was a little underwhelming, this latte was strong and flavorful! The interior is extremely welcoming and great for conversation. The baristas were also friendly, so overall, it was a great experience at Fuel! I hope to be back!

Yelp
After a long day wandering around Seattle, a little pick me up was exactly what I needed. I stopped in at Fuel to sit down for a few minutes, sip on a cappuccino, and bounce. I ordered an 8 oz almond milk cappuccino. I believe it came out to about $4.50 or so. I wasn't all too sure about a cappuccino with almond milk, but it was wonderful. The barista was able to foam it in a way that the almond milk was light and airy just like a regular cap. I sat by a window, sipped, rested my feet, and went on my way about 15 minutes later. This spot has plenty of spaces to sit inside, lots of natural light (my happy heart), lots o plants (my happy heart, again), free wifi, bathrooms, and parking spaces along the side of the building. Employees are kind and laid back. All around, good cup of coffee, fair prices, and good service.
google avatar

Yelp
Came by to grab a bag of beans based on a recommendation of a friend and was pleasantly surprised it comes with a free drip coffee. They also had interesting specials that had both coffee and alcoholic cocktails that I will have to try another time.

Cheri L.

Yelp
We are always looking for a fun coffee spot while bike riding. This place did not disappoint! Delightfully cute and the coffee rocks too!
google avatar

Sunny B.

Yelp
Stopped by for a warm drink before walking over to the Arboretum. I ordered a chai tea latte and couldn't help but also order the spinach and gruyere cheese quiche. I'm not sure if it's made in-house but it was tasty - flaky crust and nice flavor. The ambiance is cozy, quiet and airy due to the open layout. The barista was super nice. They also have a nice seating area outside in the back of the building.
google avatar

Bryttany S.

Yelp
Coffee was great and the location/ambiance is cute. I would have given 5 stars but the lady that helped me (short red hair) had the worst attitude/customer service.

Yelp
QUICK & DIRTY: A neighborhood joint serving high quality coffee at a fair price. ***** I. LOCATION & PARKING: Find Fuel on the corner of 24th and Lynn. They have free street parking everywhere, so no issues there. II. COFFEE & FOOD: They offer espressos, lattes, cold brews, and other typical coffee drinks. Regarding food, they have bagels, donuts, croissants, and danishes. I sipped on two drinks. First, a 12 oz Americano ($3.10) --. Super strong and not painfully hot. Later, I had the 16 oz cold brew ($4.60), and while drinking smelled hints of blueberry. Hmmm. III. SERVICE: Super friendly. Fast service, too. They also give great food recommendations. IV. AMBIANCE & DECOR: Dark Brown lacquered chairs, classic rock playing in the background, and gay pride flags and streamers hung everywhere. What's not to like? V. PRICES: A dollar more than other coffee shops I've seen. Comparable to Seattle, though. VI. OVERALL: If I lived in the neighborhood, I'd patron this place on the reg. Support local, y'all.

Peter H.

Yelp
Watch out people. The barista just flat out stole from my credit card transaction. Never flipped the screen for me to finalize the bill. I just checked my credit card statement and they maxed out on the tip. Reported it to my credit card. Happened today around 2:30. If I'm management I'd be checking the receipts.

Calathea L.

Yelp
Good seasonal options :) there's no tipping. Had the chai and the egg nog. The egg nog had some coffee and was nice and light. Definitely coming back
google avatar

Eric T.

Yelp
Fuel Coffee is a cheap place for a cheap drink if you're coming for chai. Great location for if you're coming from a walk around the many parks around here. I was wanting a nice wake up to my morning before going to the Arboretum just half a mile away from here and saw they had good coffee so they should have good chai. I was sadly disappointed. The drink was bland and very watered down compared to most chai teas I've had. As for aesthetics and location it's a pretty good place. It's nice and homely that the baristas add to comfort wise (they're very nice!). The reason I like this place the most is how it's between two or three parks: the Arboretum, Interlaken, and Volunteer Park. As for a date! It'd be a nice place to study with your partner or come in for a nice warm up after a quiet walk in the wonderful arboretum just 4 blocks away.

Justin F.

Yelp
Awesome little new spot. Refreshing environment and good coffee. We were out of towners who stopped in on the way to the airport, and we commented that we wished Fuel was our corner cafe back home.
google avatar

Harveen S.

Yelp
Great neighborhood establishment to get some work done, read a book, or chat with friends. I went around 2 pm on a weekday and there wasn't many people there, which was nice. However, I was disappointed that the wifi was pretty slow even though the place wasn't even half full. Prices and coffee are comparable to the rest of Seattle. I would say the best part about this place is it doesn't seem to be as busy as some of the coffee shops in U District or Cap Hill and since there's neighborhood parking, you can drive here if you have a car. They also have other drink options (juice, la croix, etc.) if you're not in the mood for coffee.
google avatar

Inna B.

Yelp
I was in the area recently and decided to pop in for a drink. The gal working seemed friendly enough and there was plenty of seating around (indoors and on that 'patio' out back). Perfect for relaxing for a moment, getting some reading/work done, or having a meeting (for fun or work). The coffee for some reason seemed to cost more than I wanted to pay at that moment, so I decided to go for an Italian Soda instead. It wasn't as good as some I've had in the past... but it was pretty good. If I start spending more time in that area, I'll probably become a regular here.
google avatar

Melanie N.

Yelp
I pass this coffee shop everyday on the way to work. Parking is hard to come by since it's in a neighborhood, but luckily I found a spot with my co-worker the other day. It's a big cafe with lots dark wood furniture. At 7 in the morning the tables were pretty full. Very impressive for a weekday, but not surprising as it's a neighborhood coffee shop. I ordered a vanilla latte and my co-worker got a mocha. The drinks were okay. The espresso flavor isn't as pronounced as other places. It was also on the pricier side. I think I spent $12 for a grande and a short. Then again, what isn't expensive these days? The coffee is decent and not terrible so I wouldn't mind going back again. Great shop for the neighborhood, but I'd only stop by again if parking was available.

Yelp
Dear Fuel, You fed the thirst in my soul with an amazing cup of and propped me up (literally) with a cozy chair when I was broken both physically and in spirit. You made the most wonderful Americano, extra shot, french vanilla, cinnamon-on-top to comfort me when I had the first meeting in months with a close friend of mine who dropped off the charts. You were welcoming, accommodating and incredibly intuitive every time. You are the solid rock of the industry, please don't ever leave me. xxo, Liana

Erin K.

Yelp
Good Vanilla Latte. Didn't enjoy their (seasonal) Cream Iced Tea as much - the milk overpowered it by the end. Their vegan breakfast sandwich is amazing, as are their breakfast burritos/tacos. Currently under construction, so the order and pickup is just in the door with no seating options, so it's great on the go! If there's a line, the wait may be a bit - nothing drastic, just not instant.

Yelp
Good café convenient to Washington Park Arboretum Location: this neighborhood coffee shop and café is located just a few short blocks from the western entrance to Washington Park Arboretum, Pinetum and the Wilcox foot bridge over the parkway. It's on 24th Ave. next to a bus stop for the 48 bus "university district". Easy location to get to the Arboretum by public transportation. Facilities: free Wi-Fi, indoor and outdoor seating available Friendly quick counter service, hot and cold drinks and light sandwiches and snacks. Friendly for children and pets. Pro tip: they sell a brand of ginger beer here called "Rachel's". Best I've had anywhere, including from Jamaica. Refreshing with a nice sharp ginger bite.
google avatar

Jesse S.

Yelp
Tried Latte Cappuccino (12 oz $4.50). It was good. The barista was friendly and fast. There was a dog at the coffee shop.
google avatar

Rosemary L.

Yelp
Great double shot latte with whole milk, and the squash bread was fresh and delicious. Friendly barista, outdoor seating. Will return!
google avatar

Yelp
The only reason for the 3 stars is that the guy working the counter was very nice! But.......it was the worst chai tea I have ever had, Sorry..will not be returning. I was hoping to like this place since I live close.

Yelp
The quality of Fuel's coffee is consistent. I've visited them here and there for years. But the lack of staff and the lacking speed at which those on duty move, especially at this location, continue to be a problem. Word on the street is that the owner does not pay her staff well, or treat them well. And while that may be apropos of nothing let alone not verified, the staff (hit-and-miss in terms of their attitudes on-shift: Some are nice and some are not) sure work with the shuffle-footing of an overworked, underpaid and under-appreciated staff. It may not be a bad place to sit down for a bit over coffee, and the coffee itself is decent, but I am somewhat turned off by the ordering experience here, and the alleged maltreatment of staff seems to be rubbing off on the actual customer experience. Can't recommend this place until things get better, in more ways than one.

Yelp
The first time I waltzed into Fuel in Montlake I ordered an earl grey tea--iced. They spoiled me, brewing up a perfect tea, lightly scented with bergamot, the ice somehow enhancing the flavor. A delicious treat for a summer day. Weeks later I found myself in a popular coffee shop you've probably heard of, but I won't mention here. I asked for an earl grey tea--iced, recalling that savory tea from Fuel. I couldn't believe it--they said they didn't have the ingredients to make it. Doh. For several days I pondered the meaning of life, and the complexity of making the perfect iced earl grey tea. How could this be so challenging? How was Fuel able to pull it off while making friendly conversation and handling a long line of customers? I finally decided that Fuel is just smarter than your average coffee shop. It's probably the only coffee shop that's been invited to MENSA. ;) I have visited Fuel many times since. The baristas are a joy, the apple pies are fun, they carry bottled Mexican Coke, the wifi is as brilliant as their tea, and they are extremely patient with kids (especially kids who are carrying credit cards). Fuel is a key staple to the neighborhood! Thank you for all you do for the community!

Amanda H.

Yelp
Barista was warm and welcoming. Tons of space to read a book, do some work, or fab with friends. Free WiFi, array of pastries, and breakfast tacos! I walked away with a tasty Cappuccino and a drip coffee.
google avatar

Alex G.

Yelp
This Fuel has a great atmosphere, and is the perfect place to study, work, or simply enjoy some coffee and treats. The coffee is good, they have some sandwiches and pastries, there is plenty of seating, free wi-fi, a lot of outlets, and pretty awesome artwork hanging that rotates about monthly. There are big tables, small tables, comfy chairs, counter seating, outdoor seating in the front and a patio in the back. Some baristas here are super friendly and some, while nice, seem a little moody or introverted, but either way they all do a really good job. My only criticisms would be the tea selection, I think it's just Numi or something, and I wish they stayed open later, they close at 8pm.

Yelp
This is a true Seattle coffee shop. Wi-fi available, plenty of cushioned chairs for the chatters, decent amount of table space for the workers, and an incredibly kind and awesome barista! I brought my Texan friend up here and she loved it. Her only complaint was the lack of sugar her mocha had... Parking across the street at the Wallingford Center lot was super easy (for the rule followers like me, just park and walk through the building to the side exit :) ). This is a great coffee shop with delicious coffee. Enjoy it!

Yelp
My local coffee shop. Lots of seating. Great staff. A bit pricey compared to some other coffee stops around town.

Yelp
It was ok- not the best ever but was pretty good! Got the Mexican coffee and I enjoyed the flavor. Nice employees and hip atmosphere. The one thing that threw me off was me and some others customers waiting for an employee to finish petting a dog. I get it's Seattle and people love dogs but c'mon, you should've taken orders then pet the pup.

Yelp
The baristas are really fun and helpful. The coffee is probably only a 3 star but that's because I'm totally spoiled with my husband being a coffee shop manager Haha

Yelp
5 stars for the coffee. The cold brew is smooth, chocolatety, and balanced. 2 stars for service. I asked the barista if she would heat up my breakfast burrito, and got a somewhat smug response that I could heat it up myself in the microwave. I actually have never used microwaves and literally don't know how long to put it in there, and it'd be nice to get treated like a guest. I would heat up a burrito for a guest in my home! Also, get a toaster oven... Who wants to nuke a burrito into a soggy mess??
