Yelp
Not to my liking.. I got 2 veggies and fufu with a side of plantain, and my nephew got the meal which came with one meat and two veggies. And two drinks. I was charged $73.00!! This was my first time at this restaurant and my first time eating Nigerian food. Perhaps this is how it is.
Since I have nothing to compare it to, I'll have to tell you my first impressions of the food. The fufu and the juice drink with sorrall were the only things I liked.
I was very excited to try the Jollof rice. I had heard so much about it, and I enjoy rice, so I was looking forward to it. The rice was slightly dry and had a smoky charred taste. Maybe that's how it tastes, but I was not a fan.
The chicken was so hard we could not eat it. It was almost as if it was fried until it was super crispy and then put in sauce but the chicken was so hard the sauce couldn't penetrate it.
The veggies were okay. I liked the spinach dish the best. The yam porridge gave the look of sweet potatoes, but it was not sweet. It was bland.
I thought the plantain would be sweet but they were dry, rubbery, and bland.
I told the server this was my first time eating Nigerian and he was gracious enough to allow me to sample a few of the sides before I ordered which I was grateful for. I probably should have left after sampling because nothing was really delicious to me, but my godson had his heart set on trying Nigerian so I selected things I thought I could tolerate. I love foods from other countries. As a black American I've wanted to try Nigerian for a long time. I thought somehow the food would resonate with me, but it didn't.
Unfortunately, I was in the bathroom for an hour when I got home. The little I did eat and drink didn't agree with me. It may have been the sorrall juice drink. It was delicious, but the label said it was unpasteurized and could upset your stomach if you were not used to it. I fell into that category. It will be a long while before I try Nigerian again.
