Where To Find Japanese Breakfast In LA

"On the rare occasion we wake up at an “acceptable time” for breakfast, there’s only one choice for us: Fukagawa. Tucked away in a hidden corner of Gardena’s sprawling Pacific Square Garden shopping center, you’ll find this peaceful, 30-year-old restaurant filled with families and friends getting lunch, and twenty-somethings either on their phones or potentially pondering whether or not they should get back on Accutane. There are four versions of the breakfast tray, but go with set D. The hunk of broiled fish is hefty, and surprisingly smoky (watch out for the bones), the miso soup is properly creamy, there’s a side of rice, and even natto - sticky, fermented soybeans that you’ll either love or never want to see again." - kat hong

The Best Japanese Food In The South Bay

"On the rare occasion we wake up at an “acceptable time” for breakfast, there’s only one choice for us: Fukugawa. Great place for Japanese set meals! The 3 of us accidentally ordered 4 sets (we thought Vegan Combo was some kind of appetizer mix) so we spent a little more among us and got really full. Clean and quite environment, good selection of manga books for the waiting time- Great portions and quality overall.

Upon walking in to the restaurant you find yourself looking at a greeting desk. No one was there but staff was prompt with answering the door. As you walk through the dining area you find yourself looking at Japanese decorations, displays of walk abouts and upbeat music. The setup of the restaurant makes you feel warm and welcomed however once I sat on my seat I noticed some of the walls could use a bit of a clean up. The staff is gentle and prompt with serving your beverage. The menu had excellent options between breakfast anytime and dinner items. The service was precise with refills and presenting the meals on a timely fashion. The staff is dressed well and shows their compassion for their service by keeping guests checked in for any concerns or thoughts. This is a fantastic place to eat alone or a date/friend.

Arrived at 6, told it wasn't happy hour despite the menu stating it's until 6:30. Fine. Took a long time to take an order, maybe 20 minutes after being seated. Pork katsu curry arrived and the cutlet was at most 3 strips of 1oz pork each. The plate was a thin veneer of gummy rice and dry, shredded cabbage. Curry sauce was watered down and mediocre. The miso soup tasted like instant packaged stuff from the market next door. Honestly, just looking at the plate, any self-respecting chef would never let it leave the kitchen. Overall obscenely overpriced.

Google
This is the first time I visited this Japanese restaurant. Unexpectedly, there were a lot of customers during lunch time. Due to the obvious lack of staff, I had to wait for a long time to place my order. There are many food choices, mainly serving various Japanese set meals, such as curry, tempura, and soba noodles. The portions of food are sufficient. A normal person can definitely eat enough. As for the taste, frankly speaking, it is just average by my standards. For example, my tempura was not crispy, and the batter was too thick. Compared to the Japanese-style western restaurant not far away, which is managed by Japanese, there is a clear difference in the standard between the two.

Teriyaki Teishoku sauce too salty, over all ok. Price a little high. Total included tips about $30.

Google
Japanese comfort food. I enjoyed the atmosphere. I ordered the salmon it was very salty could not taste the salmon. As long as they focus on quality this could be a great place to enjoy Japanese comfort food. The okonomiyaki didn't seem freshly made. It seemed packaged frozen. My advice to management and chef focus on quality and freshness and this can be a great place for Japanese comfort food.

Google
Quint Japanese restaurant that’s been there forever, hidden in the Southeast corner of a strip mall. If you weren’t looking for this restaurant, you’d miss it. The katsu jyuu (pork cutlet covered with scrambled egg and oinion) combo is their Monday special (different Mon-Fri). Comes with either hot/cold soba or udon. Very tasty and flavorful. Worth a try.

Google
Easy parking since it shares a huge parking lot with other businesses it’s in the corner pocket past Sweet Rice and across from Bowl Thai Grill. Had the breakfast combo which was surprisingly filling. Definitely a must if you’re craving Japanese breakfast. The cutlet and katsu looked good also! DISAPPOINTMENT - They charge us for the dinner rate and not the lunch rate and I didn’t noticed until I left. Pretty sad because we were there well before 2pm - The Yelp reservation/waitlist app worked but they don’t seem to abide by it? Overall, happy and satisfied with the service. Tables were cleaned and they were attentive despite how busy they were during lunch

Yelp
I just have say this was an amazing experience, food was so delicious and the atmosphere was on point. Japanese cuisine on point, a must !!!!

Yelp
Authentic Japanese Food Japanese Fish Breakfast: Very fresh, authentic, and homey, but a little bland. Salmon: Too salty for my taste. Service: I've been here twice. The first time was on a weekday afternoon right when they opened--the service was excellent, very respectful and professional. However, my second visit was on a Saturday night, and the service was the complete opposite. The staff was much younger and inexperienced. Ambiance: Very Japanese

Yelp
We came here primarily for the breakfast sets. We made reservations and they were able to accommodate a toddler and twins in stroller plus 4 adults easily. The servers were very nice and fawned over the twins who are like right now at peak cuteness. The place is like an old school Japanese bento box place. It's got an extensive menu full of things I want to eat. I ultimately settled on a steak set cooked medium rare. Hubby went with their grilled fish breakfast set with natto. Overall, their food is predictably good and comforting, even the kid's set with gyoza and french fries! The only complaint my brother and I had (we both got the same food) was the steak was overcooked and dry on the edges - the rest of it was good. Pricing is fair and it's a nice, nostalgic stop. Definitely still a recommend for the experience that we had. Check it out!

Yelp
I had to think about this one, and honestly it's just the case that I left here with a pretty big hole in my pocket for the sole reason that I would've been hungry with just one of the bowls. Hoorah for happy hour! But two happy hour apps ($12) + a Katsu Jyu ($19) .. the katsu is slightly deceptive where it looks like they give only a minuscule amount until you realize they actually don't pound the pork thin to fry. So they're hefty pieces, just that it's only a handful amount. The sauce was pretty confusing where when eating with the pork and rice it tasted light & delicate, but if eaten with only the rice then it left a heavy salt aftertaste. The flavors didn't exactly marry together, and I think at the end of the night I felt like there was a tad too much salt. Service, on the other hand, great! Waitress was welcoming and checked on my table periodically. I came during an off hour, so it was dead quiet inside besides the background music they played in the back and can't comment other than it was pretty peaceful eating there. Overall, a little pricey with nothing super amazing .. which is unfortunate because I had high hopes for this place.

Yelp
We came here on New Year's Day since most other businesses in the area were closed. We wanted some soba to celebrate the new year so settled on Fukagawa after searching on Yelp. My husband and I ordered the udon with tempura set, and the cold soba with tempura set. It did take awhile to get our food since the kitchen seemed to be backed up. When the food came I noticed the portion size was small for the price. The tempura had a heavy batter and the cold soba was unfortunately overcooked and soggy. For an authentic Japanese restaurant this was quite disappointing, I had pretty high expectations. Our bill came out to be around $58 with tip. This is quite expensive considering the small portions and mediocre food. Since there's so many dining choices in this area, I would likely not return.

Yelp
Visited Fukugawa because my girlfriend and I wanted an authentic Japanese breakfast and had a great experience. As always your experience will vary, as many other reviews have stated negative food quality or service, but on my visit I experienced none of this. As I came on a Thursday morning on a weekday, there was no wait and plenty of seats. The servers were attentive and food came out pretty quickly. The interior of the restaurant is totally Japanese, with wood pillars and beams making it feel homey like a traditional Japanese home. Each day of the week has a different lunch special, and on Thursday that happened to be the Katsu and Udon set menu. Like traditional Japanese breakfast, there are many different small dishes and flavors that you can try. I especially liked the udon broth, as it was light to go with he heavy breaded katsu. Overall I had a fantastic experience and left pretty satisfied.

Yelp
If you're looking for authentic Japanese dining experience, this restaurant is a must visit! The atmosphere felt like a little slice of Japan with an ambiance that truly appreciate the culture and cuisine. The food was absolutely on point. Every dish was crafted with care and precision. The mackerel fish was incredibly fresh, practically melting in your mouth, which is a testament to the high-quality ingredients. I opted for one of their combo sets, and it was not only beautifully presented, but also incredibly satisfying, leaving me full and happy without being overly stuffed. The servers were friendly and quick to respond to any request, adding to the overall delightful experience. Whether you are a sushi lover or simply enjoy authentic Japanese cuisine, this place is sure to impress! There are plenty of parking spaces in the front. I can't wait to return. Bon appétit!

Yelp
Fukagawa is located in the same plaza as Tokyo Central & Main, in a hidden corner with a large shared parking lot. If you are facing Tokyo Central, then Fukagawa would be in the right hand corner. I have been wanting to try Fukagawa because of their traditional Japanese breakfast, which they serve all day. So since my husband, our little girl dog and I happened to be shopping in this plaza, we decided to grab an early dinner here since my husband kind of skipped lunch and I had an early lunch. It just worked out perfectly that Fukagawa has an outdoor, dog friendly space that is covered but with glass ceilings, it will not give you shade from the sun during the day. We came here around 4:15 pm and sat at a table right outside. My husband went inside to let a server know that we would like to dine outside. That server brought out menus right away and asked if we would like any drinks, such as water to start. Then he came back right away with water for the 2 of us (I had a cup for our little girl so I just poured water in it for her). After looking over the menu, we ended up ordering: Breakfast Set C with grilled fish, $19.75 prior to tax- This breakfast set comes with steam rice, one egg (my husband requested sunny side up when asked how he would like his egg cooked), miso soup, fish (my husband picked mackerel) a side of cold tofu and pickled vegetables. I couldn't decide what I wanted, even though I wanted to try their breakfast, so my husband said he would order this and we could share. I liked the grilled mackerel and cold tofu. I think the amount of food was plenty for one person. My husband liked his food. Special Chicken Teriyaki Combo with Noodles, $24 prior to tax- I ended up deciding to go with a combination food that comes with 4 pieces of cut California roll, steamed rice, miso soup, salad, pickled vegetables and your choice of either udon or soba noodles. You can also pick hot or cold. I opted for hot soba noodles. The miso soup was perfectly seasoned and so was the hot soba noodles. Both really were just right for the cold early evening/ late afternoon we dined. The teriyaki chicken was more on the savory side. I thought it was okay but felt it was a little on the smokey side but my mom enjoyed it (I took some of the chicken and California roll home since this was a lot of food). ---------------------------------- (Total= $48.23 after tax, prior to tip) I really liked the food. Wait time for our food to be brought out to us was not too long and the portion size of each meal really is more than enough for one person, so I can understand why the prices are a bit high. Our server only came out once to offer us water but he never really came back to check up on us. Another lady, who brought out our meals did check up on us and was so nice to bring us hot water, She also gave us a refill after we had paid. My husband figured that since we were sitting outside that maybe this is why our server had forgotten about us. But they weren't really too busy inside... But anyway, I do like Fukagawa and would come back here again in the near future. Also, if you follow Fukagawa on Instagram, you can get an additional 5% discount on your meal and every visit thereafter.

Yelp
You only get one chance to make a good first impression. After working all day outdoors and wanting a good meal for dinner, I came here tonight, New Year's Day. Most places were closed because of the holiday and I didn't want fast food or iHop - plus I heard that this place was good. Got here around 20 to 8:00pm. Added myself to the digital waitlist and took a seat outside since the waiting area had two people on the benches: 1 guy waiting for takeout and 1 young lady who got on the waitlist 30 seconds before me. A few minutes after getting on the wait list, I get a notification I was removed. I never had any notification in between being placed on the list and being removed. I went in to ask a waiter. Here's the dialogue: Me: "Hi. I got removed off the waitlist but never had any notification that my turn was up." I then show my text messages to him Waiter: "Oh. We are full inside and you'll have to wait a while until we get another table ... you can also sign up again on the waitlist. Unless you want to sit at a table outside." Me (noticing a table inside is being wiped down): "I'm fine with a table outside." Waiter: "We're short staffed in the kitchen. It's probably going to take a long time to get your food. You're going to be waiting a long time." Me (noticing the young lady ahead of me is seated at a table indoors with menu as well as a party of four now in the waiting area): "Oh. Okay. Um, I guess I'll come back another day." I left. The waiter could have been right in everything he told me but I find it suspicious that it looked like they were readying an indoor table for a larger party who came after me and they seated the young woman who got there literally seconds before me. If there was a staffing shortage and long waits, tell me before I get on the waitlist or better yet, have a sign by the waitlist sign-in to let people know ahead of time. But no. I felt singled out. Felt like they didn't want me there so I won't be back. Once again, you only get one chance to make a good first impression. And they done fucked up.

Yelp
Great service and ambiance reminds me of being in Japan. Overall good food but small portions.
google avatar

Yelp
I loved how the special combos came with lots of different food. The chicken katsu was very tender and crispy. The croquettes were good but nothing special as the inside was just potato no other veggies. The udon was really good along with the California rolls. The inside of the restaurant is very nice and traditional vibes. The sukiyaki looks good I might have to splurge and get that next time.

Yelp
Food: ohhhhh boy, came here with my boyfriend and his parents, it was my first time meeting them and I was sooo nervous, so I paid very little attention to what I was eating. I'm glad it was light Japanese breakfast, not sure if I could've digested other heavy foods well haha. Other than the fact that everyone was so sweet and kind and the meetup went very well, the food was good too! You can choose your fish and how you like your eggs cooked - I prefer sunny side up but my bf chose dashimaki the egg roll. Overall, it was a nice mix of good comfort dishes (but I think I can make the same at home) Price: my bf's parents were so sweet and graciously paid for our meals, the lunch time breakfast combos ranged from 12 to 22, while dinner time combos ranged from 13 to 23 Ambiance: located in the far right corner of a big Japanese mall plaza, it is nicely tucked away. The inside is actually fairly big with about 15-20 tables and there were even outdoor seating areas too. Decorated in somewhat more traditional Japanese design, it's very cozy and quaint, great to come with friends or partner or even your future in-laws for hearty meals Service: great, the servers were mostly middle aged Japanese women, who were so kind and friendly. We wanted to bring out a cake from different bakery to quickly celebrate my bf's birthday, but they said they would have to charge a fee, just fyi Parking: since it is part of a large outdoor plaza with tokyo central market, there's plenty of parking spots, no worries about finding an available spot, but you might have to park a little farther away on weekends, since it gets pretty crowded

Yelp
With outdoor seating and heat lamps, I was happily able to dine with my dog Haru! My sister ordered the delicious Japanese breakfast with steak, and I had the Super Fish Combo with grilled salmon and cold soba noodles. The meal was delicious and filling, but without that heavy meal feeling. It did take time for our meal, but was worth it. (I thought our server forgot about us since we were the only one outside at about 12:30pm) Another gentleman who brought our check and extra hot was nice. Probably better service sitting inside
google avatar

Yelp
I've been coming here since I was a child and through various generations of staffing have always had a nice experience. Now, with new management, there's some new iterations of menu items! They fried oysters are some of the best without any briny odor taste and the shishito peppers are bomb! Coming here for well poured drafts and small a la carte orders is definitely a new move as the plate meals have been a nice staple. With nice background music, it sets up a great atmosphere for hanging out with friends without having to yell at each other. This place continues to rock and I'll always be coming here!
google avatar

Yelp
Came by for lunch on a Sunday. It was pretty busy but didn't have to wait too long for a table. Service was pretty bad though, no menu for a good 10 minutes after being seated. The food was good though and big portions. The salmon was really good. Bad service though, you try to flag down someone and they still look away.

Yelp
Lived in Gardena all my childhood. Moved to OC in 1979. I've never EVER been here! Luckily, I met a friend who was coming from Pasadena half way and she wanted Japanese food. We were thinking about getting a tempura plate, but consulted the waitress and she said the grilled fish breakfasts are great! So we went with that. Everything was VERY tasty and the restaurant was packed when we left at 12:30 p.m. I'd come here again in a heartbeat. Our server was extremely pleasant. On the receipt I have, it says "Lunch U" served us. We were there on 06-08-24 as soon as they opened.

Rina M.

Yelp
Fukugawa is the best place to get authentic Japanese breakfast. It's very nice cause not many places offers such a solid combo with many variety. I love getting the grilled salmon combo with rice, miso, tamagoyaki, pickled vegetables and hiyayakko tofu. When the food comes out, it's small portions and you think it won't be enough food but don't be fooled! You'll leave this place happily satisfied. The portions are perfectly balanced and leaves you happily full. The ambience is very nice, dim lighting and lofi type of music. Service is great as the server and the manager are very attentive. I highly recommend!
google avatar

Shay A.

Yelp
Service was slow. And with how long we were waiting to receive our orders, we thought, at least it will be fresh cooked. Food was cold, I got the garlic beef plate with hot green tea. Even the Miso soup was cold. Only people at our table that got hot food was whoever ordered the curry. My mom ordered the steak plate, her steak was way overcooked. Won't be coming back.
google avatar

Yuri J.

Yelp
Everything at Fukagawa is amazing - fresh quality ingredients, beautiful plating, and delicious and satisfying food. Cold soba with natto - light, refreshing, and fresh! I've never had cold soba with natto as a topping, but it was a delicious combo. Japanese breakfast set (with grilled mackerel, natto) - comes with miso soup, radish, egg (your way), and tofu as side dishes. The meal was perfect with a deliciously grilled mackerel and option to choose how you want your egg. It was satisfying and comforting!

Yelp
Greatly disappointed in a place that looked like my family would enjoy! We came in on Saturday afternoon and we were not aware it is best to make a reservation but we were given the option to eat outside, which we were fine with. Once we sat a server/hostess came and gave us waters and menus. My daughter was excited to have an Udon soup. Unfortunately after 30 minutes of waiting no one came to serve us. I stood up a few times trying to get someone's attention, but no one looked. I needed to feed my kids so we left. They did so well patiently waiting and we were ignored. For this reason I will have to say if you want to eat here with your family I recommend you go elsewhere because families are not welcomed!
google avatar

Yelp
Service is excellent/fast, ladies are polite, attentive, respectful, helpful, and hard working. There are inside and outside tables. Set menus are the best for price and I couldn't finish it. It has enough variety so it's not one thing to eat but filling. Tea is complimentary and VERY good especially on a cold day. Miso and udon soup (only soy broth flavor) was flavor well. Pork was flavor OK but it was a bit tough and cut a bit too large to chew. Definitely, ask for a knife/fork/soup to avoid requesting it later. Eating here is like a home cook Japanese meal. It's comfort food. I will definitely try another dish next time.
google avatar

Heather H.

Yelp
The southbay has so many Japanese treasures! This meal is my ideal type of dinner with bites of variety. I got the "Japanese breakfast D" which came with miso soup, pickled veggies, rice, tofu, natto, egg, and choice of fish (I got mackerel). Every component was super yummy. Ambiance is humble and quiet, super homey and perfect for conversation. Service is solid and attentive. Excited to come back!

Hiroshi Y.

Yelp
There aren't many restaurants where you can eat Japanese udon or Japanese soba at night, so it's perfect for business travelers from Japan who are jet-lagged. It was not pricy at all, filling and very satisfying. Drinks and small appetizers before the meal are also reasonably priced, so I'll definitely be coming back.
google avatar

Yelp
Such a great place to go and eat for comfort Japanese foods! Fukagawa has a big menu with so many items to choose from but I went with the special fish combo with salmon and cold soba. Along with the salmon and cold soba, it came with 4 pieces of Cali roll, a salad, miso soup and bowl of rice. Portion size was decent and they all tasted so good! Service was great and the servers were super nice! We also ordered the recommended mochi dessert. It was good but nothing special. I don't think we would order it again. I would love to come back and try other foods on their menu!

Yelp
I give Fukugawa 3.5 stars for the food and service. Here's what we ordered... Hot udon with vegetable tempura: The udon broth was too light for me Curry with steak: The curry was good, but the steak quality was not to my liking Overall, the food is okay. Nothing bad, nothing special. The service should be better. I'm a generous tipper, but I couldn't justify it here and left the minimum.

Yelp
DO NOT EAT HERE....The food is horrible! All the food tasted like it was premade and just heated up, nothing was made fresh. Fukagawa used to be a very good authentic Japanese restaurant. We haven't been here in a while and were so disappointed. It's sad that some of the best Japanese restaurants like Fukagawa and Sanuki no Sato have changed owners and have gone down in taste and quality. Teriyaki chicken and the grilled fish were room temp and dried up. They charged $30 for a disgusting piece of beef that had the texture of paper which was also premade and reheated. Fried squid legs were room temp and soggy and the spinach bacon salad didn't have bacon but instead had overcooked hard pork belly that was super porky with cold solidified fat. Even the green onions for the soba sauce were dried and shriveled up. Literally every single thing was old and dried up. We spent $140 for food that tasted like bad leftovers straight from the fridge.

Yelp
My husband and I came on a Monday night at 7:30 PM. There were only 3 other tables so were seated right away. The restaurant is quiet and cozy, with some ambient music playing. 1. Special Fish Combo - I chose the Spanish Mackerel, which was an additional $4, but it was delicious. The fish was grilled and seasoned well and not fishy. 2. Special Steak Combo - My husband ordered the large, which was 8oz. The steak felt a bit overcooked so some of the pieces were tough. We also wished there was some sort of sauce that went with it; it just seemed like something could have made it better. The Special Combos come with 4pc california roll, a half order of udon or soba, salad, miso soup, and rice. I love hot udon and so this really hit the spot. It seemed like a lot of food but it was well balanced and everything was delicious! I'll be back to try other items on the menu!

Yelp
This place is a lot like a valedictorian HS student. It had so much potential and signs of growth but then u don't know what happened to it, and it kinda succumbs to its own demise. I used to rly like this place. They had legit japanese food. But after this most recent lunch rush, I realize they're understaffed, we had to wait 25 min to get someone to take order. When the food came, they messed up like 3 of our table orders! When i ordered the japanese bfast combo plate, they asked me what kind of egg do I want. ??? I thought it was an odd question, and it was! Everyone who ordered a japanese blast plate gets the egg Tamayo. But I got a fried egg?? So weird. Wish I could recommend this place but I cant. It's also kinda pricey.

Yelp
Today was a lovely Sunday to enjoy a Japanese breakfast. We both ordered combo C and it was the right order to fuel us for the rest of the day. The food was delicious as always. Although we arrived just before the lunch hour, it wasn't too busy and we were seated almost immediately. Enjoy!

Yelp
Wow, just discovered the best udon I've had in LA, and their tempura is perfect. Happy to have the plant based options!! So delicious.

Yelp
I've been coming here for years and miss when they used to open at 9 or 10a and now it's open at 11 which gets close to lunch time for a lot of people during the week. This last time we visited it seemed like they had all new staff running the place unlike the years past where it's been consistently the same old ladies who ran the cashier and ran the front of the house. The dining area has an old-school vibe with all wood furniture and a tatami area, along with a little exhibit showing samples of Japanese woodworking. I'd say out of 90% of the times I've been here I've almost always gotten the same meal set which is the grilled salmon with a tiny side of grated radish, a sunny side egg to I later place on the bowl of rice, a block of tofu with green onions and some shave bonito flakes, pickled veggies, and a bowl of miso. So far this meal set hasn't really changed in flavor/consistency in the times I've been here. The only other options I think I've tried are their Udon meals (like the curry udon, which I recall enjoying), but I haven't had these in a while. If you happen to be in the area stop by for a nice filling yet healthy breakfast.

Yelp
Found Fukagawa when I was looking for a quality Japanese restaurant in the South Bay. I can say with confidence that this place does not disappoint. I've had multiple items off their many and it's always so good. Cannot recommend this place more!

Yelp
This is my favorite Japanese restaurant in Gardena. I will go here every time for breakfast when I am in the neighborhood. This place makes me wish I lived closer to this area. I always get their grilled fish breakfast with mackerel and dashi tama. Their chicken katsu set is always great and prices are always so reasonable. There is a very relaxing home-y feeling when you come here and all the Japanese waitresses are always so kind and food comes out in a reasonable time. Definitely coming here again and again!

Yelp
Still our favorite place for Japanese breakfast! We mostly dine inside but sat outside today with our dogs. Love to order the combo D with mackerel!

Yelp
I came here to try out some Japanese food in Torrance and ran into this gem. I ordered the Special Pork Filet Combo and it was delicious. It came with 2 salads, miso soup, rice, 6 california roll pieces, and udon. This place looks small, but still good for big groups since there is also outdoor seating. Customer service is great and the place is clean. There is plenty of parking since it's in the Tokyo Central Main Plaza.

Yelp
One of the best Japanese restaurants I've ever tried! My go to order is the shishito peppers as an appetizer and the hot udon Nabeyaki and mochi for dessert. This dining experience feels both high quality and homey at the same time. Staff is extremely helpful and friendly if you have any questions or would like any recommendations

Yelp
Stopped by for lunch today with the wife and kids. This place was recommended to me by my friends who live in the area. The food was tasty, especially the aji that was part of the breakfast combo. They have Christmas decorations up right now and play some classic songs from the 80s and 90s Japan. Will be coming back soon to enjoy more.

Yelp
Nice little spot that has traditional Japanese breakfasts and meals. I think that's why a lot of people come here. The food here is a little above average. I really like the variety of their menu and foods too. I also really liked the service and how quiet it was inside. So ambience here was definitely 10/10.

Yelp
Went to a work lunch at this highly recommended Japanese restaurant. We all ordered the lunch combination since it had so many options for a good price. I got the shrimp and vegetable tempura, salad, soba noodles, soup and cali rolls. The portion was just right and just enough food, I actually had some leftover on my plate. The customer service was wonderful as they were constantly filling up our tea. This restaurant is located in a shopping center in Gardena, hidden gem!

Yelp
Gardena's gem of all authentic Japanese gems. Straight up Japanese home-cooked classics and excellent service that never disappoints. The wait staff are friendly and extremely knowledgeable about their servings; and they move quickly. We had the chicken katsu plate. The breading was crispy and inside was juicy. They provided a generous amount of sauce on the side, so you can add as much, or little, as you want. Miso broth was rich. I could go on and on. Follow them on IG to get 5% discount on every visit. You're welcome.

Yelp
Fukagawa is a staple in our restaurant rotation and it never fails to disappoint. If you can stomach a slightly higher price than the usual fast casual, then add Fukagawa to your rotation. This time, we got the chicken katsu plate and the oyakodon (see pics) and were happily surprised at how tasty it was.

Yelp
Stopped by randomly over the weekend for a quick bite to eat. I ordered the fried oyster plate and the boyfriend went with a katsu plate. We both agreed to maybe never get the katsu again. It was definitely not the best we had and it was incredibly dry. The fried oysters on the other hand, were good. The ladies who were there were incredibly sweet and showed our dog a lot of love.

Yelp
I came here on a Friday for dinner with some friends. I've heard that this spot is known for their Japanese breakfasts so I had to give it a try. They serve their breakfasts all day but they serve a variety of different dishes from soba, udon, rice dishes and shabu. It was fairly busy for a Friday night but we were able to get seated right away. The first thing I noticed was how awkwardly huge the tables here were. I ordered the steak combo D and my friends ordered the curry chicken katsu. The steak combo came with miso soup, natto, tofu, pickled vegetables, egg and rice. It was incredibly filling but didn't feel too heavy. The steak itself was a little overcooked and dry. It was my first time trying natto and I can't say I was a fan. I ended up giving it to my friend who enjoys eating natto. They said this natto is a little on the plain side and not that great for someone who has never tried it before. My friends who ordered the curry chicken katsu were a little disappointed by the portion of the chicken because it was smaller than they expected. Overall, this was a good spot to eat and I would definitely come back to try some of their other dishes!

Yelp
Came here for their lunch specials. Plenty of options for everyone. Saw a lot of tables got their breakfast combo, but I decided to try their Rosu Katsu (pork sirloin) instead. Meal came with the standard miso soup, bowl of rice, small scoop of potato salad and some pickled vegetables. I wasn't a fan of their potato salad - did not taste fresh. The katsu was cooked well. It was a good meal, but nothing stood out. The service on the other hand was amazing service from start to finish. We were promptly greeted, seated, menu delivered, served tea, took our order, waitress checked in with us at the right times, and did not take that long to get the check. May come back to try their popular breakfast combos!

Yelp
I love their breakfast plate. It reminds me of japan so much. It's very traditional with eggs, natto, tofu, fish, rice and miso soup. You have to get the egg dashi maki style. They make the dashi maki on the sweeter side. It's simple but so comforting and filling! The fish was cooked perfectly and had just enough fat. The miso soup was a bit too salty for my taste but not a dealbreaker.
