Blas Alfaro, One of Seattle’s Best Roasters, Is on a Quest for a Better Bean - Eater Seattle

"Alfaro is the vice president and partner at Fulcrum, a nine-year-old Seattle roaster with spacious headquarters in SoDo and 30 employees. It’s rare for a roasting company to have an actual coffee farmer in a leadership role... But Alfaro’s knowledge and experience has helped Fulcrum build close relationships with quality coffee producers around the world, and it’s the reason why Seattleites often see Fulcrum’s bags in some of the city’s best shops, such as Hood Famous Cafe and Bar in the Chinatown International District and Greenwood’s Preserve and Gather... By heading up the main roasting program for Fulcrum, Alfaro brings a sensibility that attempts to address the needs of smaller producers... When discussing his coffee finds and how they relate to farming improvements, Alfaro gets especially animated about hybrids, coffee plants mixed with different genetic lineages." - Gabe Guarente

Shout-out to Brian! I was intending to visit Fulcrum Cafe to pick up a bag of coffee beans but ended up at their roastery where I realized they only sell wholesale (They do online pickups for retail). One of their team members Brian was extremely friendly and offered to make me a coffee for undertaking the journey to their roastery, and then spoke at lengths about all the different coffee, their roasting and brewing equipment. He made a Colombian Bourbon Sidra for me, and if you like honey washed processing for your coffee beans, you will love this one. On the way back, I stopped at their Bell town cafe and picked up a bag of coffee from Myanmar. The selection was amazingly large!

Fulcrum coffee is absolutely delicious. We stopped by on our way out of Seattle and I’m so glad that we did. I highly recommend ordering one of their unique lattes! There’s plenty of seating within the space and even some seating outside if you want to sit down and chat with a friend or if you want to work and have a change of scenery.

Fulcrum is one of the best roasters ever! Their coffee is next level and they are always working on offering new coffee beans . They Ensure that their customers have the best possible experience and will do their best to be available for any needs a cafe may have. Highly recommend working with this great company.

This location is not a public cafe, but the employees were so gratuitous and had amazing hospitality. They made us two drinks regardless and gave us a free bag of their holiday blend roast. Amazing place!

My wife and I were visiting from Omaha, Nebraska and we wanted to purchase some local coffee beans. We had a tight schedule, so when we accidentally went to the roasting office and not the actual coffee shop, I thought we'd missed our chance. My wife suggested I pop my head in and ask to speak to someone. I was concerned I'd be wasting everyone's time, but I did it anyway. So glad I did! I spoke with... McKayla? Sorry if I got that wrong. Anyway, the interaction was very pleasant and made me wish I had a lot more time to explore Seattle! They gave us two small whole-bean samples to take back with us: Snoho Mojo (medium roast) and Ursa Minor (mild roast). Not great at describing roasting notes, so I'll just say that they are delicious! We will DEFINITELY be visiting the actual coffee shop next time we visit. Thank you very much to the roasting office!

NO RETAIL SALES! This is not a place where you can get a cup of coffee, ignore the reviews that say you can. It’s their corporate office, not a retail coffee house. Too bad.

Absolutely loved this coffee shop while living Seattle. Being right down the street from their Belltown location, it was a weekend staple for me on Saturday mornings. I made the mistake of confusing their roastery in Georgetown as a cafe. Nonetheless we were welcomed in, and an employee made us each our own drinks by hand. After moving I decided to continue to support this awesome brand by signing up for their subscription.
