How the Pandemic Broadened My Horizons as a Diner - Eater

"A Chinese restaurant in Montreal received a lot of attention this week for its charmingly honest menu descriptions, including 'Comparing to our General Tao Chicken, this one is not THAT good' and 'We used to have the beef pieces on small sticks but several customers cut their lips by it, thinking it was some hard ingredient.'" - Amanda Kludt

First time here today in over 20 years. It's a nice little restaurant , we came around 3pm, so there was plenty of space. The waiter was very friendly and efficient. We ordered 4 meals for our family and it was delicious. We will probably be back.

My wife and I were really in the mood for some good Chinese food and since we were already in downtown Montreal, we decided to walk over to Chinatown which has in my opinion the best Chinese restaurants in Montreal. We chose a real, “Old School” restaurant named Fung Shing on Boul. Saint-Laurent which has been around since 1976. The interior reminded me of when my parents took me to Chinese restaurants as a kid. Great memories! We selected from the menu, Hunan Dumplings, Lemon Chicken, Beef with Ginger and Pineapple and Stir Fried Vegetables, and let me tell you we experienced an explosion of flavours from each of these dishes. The portions were extremely large and we could not finish all of our food. The restaurant packaged it up for us to takeout so that we could bring it home and enjoy this absolutely delicious food once again.

If I could give zero stars, I would. This was easily one of the most unpleasant dining experiences I’ve ever had. From the moment we arrived, the server was impatient and dismissive. He kept telling us to “hurry up,” and when we asked questions about the menu, his only response was, “Check the menu,” in a dismissive tone. It felt like we were bothering him just by being there. What made things even more uncomfortable was seeing how differently he treated other customers who came in after us. He was noticeably friendlier, more patient, and much more attentive with guests who appeared to share his cultural background. Honestly, it felt racially motivated. We left feeling disrespected and unwelcome, and we deeply regret wasting our time and money here. We won’t be coming back — and we wouldn’t recommend this restaurant to anyone.

Everything we ordered was tasty! We didn’t expect the small portions to be this big haha that was amazing. I would recommend to go with friends and share a delicious meal here. The tea the gave us was also very nice.

Decent Chinese food. The waiters are very friendly and helpful. The boss is super nice!! We ordered orange beef, but he told me beef was not fresh and the new shipment haven't come in yet so we changed it to orange chicken.

Google
It has not changed ... 30+ years. The house special rice is as good as ever 😍 This rating is a bit overrated - from my nostalgia. May 2023: the place has not changed much; some how the wonton soup and the special house rice (not on the menu any more) did not taste as good as I remember.

Google
This place takes you back in time to 70’s with the wood panelling and double swinging doors into the kitchen. The portions were generous and the prices very reasonable. The flavours were much like home cooking, light on the salt and spices. Good thing too, because that way you can eat more and have a better chance of finishing things off. The mixed seafood hot pot was great and so was the prawns fried rice.

Google
Practically the only Chinese Restaurant I liked to eat at when I'm in Chinatown. Friendly staff, good food and prices are fair for what you get. I've been living for 35years, and my family has been going there for more than 40 years. Best Wonton Noodle Soup! Hands down.

Yelp
Practically the only Chinese Restaurant I liked to eat at when I'm in Chinatown. Friendly staff, good food and prices are fair for what you get. Gets kinda loud if with big crowds but generally ok. I've been living for 42years, and my family has been going there for more than 50 years. Best Wonton Noodle Soup! Hands down.

Yelp
This hole in the wall restaurant in Chinatown is very consistent. This last time I decided to go vegetarian and the food did not disappoint. I got a nice Chinese broccoli dish with steamed rice on the side and it was very tasty, flavorful and light. I ordered the sauce on the side and they obliged with no problem. The place is not fancy, but your basic old Chinese restaurant establishment. Lots of menu item to choose from.

Yelp
We were lucky to be staying so close to the Chinatown neighborhood during our stay. Simply walking around we found this place. It wasn't busy. The food was reasonably priced. And the menu looked like it would have something for both of us. We were sat right away. Gave the menu a quick glance but we already knew (mostly) what we wanted. Our server stopped by, poured tea, and took our order. We had the vegetable fried rice, rice porridge, and the general's chicken. It's was weird having diced tomatoes in the fried rice, but not a deal breaker. The chicken was probably the best breaded chicken I've ever seen. Not by taste, but by crunch. They used dark meat which was different than I used to. But the sauce was good too. It started to get very busy after we arrived. The food seemed to come out as it became ready as opposed to everything being ready for the table and then brought out. There wasn't much that was remarkable about this place. It's good for a quick bite. All the food we saw on other tables looked good. So it might warrant a second chance.

Yelp
We stopped here for a dinner as a group of 6. The service was pretty bad, very hard to get their attention. The wine was pretty terrible but the food was decent. Not much more to say, not coming back.

Yelp
This place feels like home made Chinese food. The restaurant feels like it's been there forever (which it probably has) and the servers speak canto too. Food is good portions and fast. Ordered the seafood and tofu soup (it tasted right, but it didn't have a lot of seafood), rice noodles with beef (okay, but I expected it to be hotter and greasier - true to Chinese food form), the lemon chicken (actually quite chicken heavy), and the fried tofu and veggies (this was too much veggie and my enough fried tofu).

Yelp
What the heck is wrong with people who identify Fung Shing as their go-to Chinese place in Montreal??? I get it if a Wonder-Bread-white Canadian says this. But there are Asians saying this in reviews!!! O. M. G. SMH!! What is wrong with you?! Haha. This is as Westernized Chinese food as it gets. I mean flour-laden, fried-up, in egregiously sweet and corn-starch-thickened sauces. Yes, the quantities are large. But the quality of the ingredients and cooking here sucks! If you want real, quality Chinese food in Montreal's Chinatown, go to Kim Fung for dim sum, or Keung Kee for a sit-down meal. Order some razor clams, oysters, scallops, etc. That's real Chinese food, not the slop here. We ordered the salt & pepper shrimp, a fish hotpot, a duck dish and a bowl of wontons. The duck was so forgettable, I can't even remember the details, except that it was covered in thick corn-starched sauce. The fish in the hotpot tasted off, like the fish had just gone bad. Sometimes you can fry something hard, and add some of that salt & pepper combination, and you can mask the flavor. But there's always an undercurrent / aftertaste that is just slightly off - whether it's squid, shrimps or scallops. Chinese know what I mean. Finally, the shrimp. I'd like to think I know a thing or two about salt & pepper shrimp. It is my absolute favorite dish, and one I use to judge all Cantonese resto's. Salt & pepper shrimp should be whole shrimp, head on. If no head, at least large 25/30 shrimp. With minimal breading. Fried to a crisp. Fung Shing's version... haha... tiny shrimp. Like 35/40 shrimp. Do those even exist?? The same tiny shrimp they use in their wontons. And it was encased in a thick coat of breading / flour. The seasoning and mix of diced peppers was, to their credit, on point. But holy cow - the baseline shrimp was awful!! As stereotypical Westernized shrimp-in-a-Chinese-takeout-dump as it gets! So disappointing. Before I forget, the shrimp wonton soup was decent. As others have noted, it's a good soup. They added a little sesame oil, some MSG, and shrimp wontons - probably a novelty for most Canadians. But they're standard Cantonese fare! For a better version, with more shrimp per wonton, go to Ethan, under Keung Kee. Nothing else is good there, but do get the wontons. Open eyes! Wow... Last egregious kick in the pants, Fung Shing charges for rice. What decent Chinese resto charges for rice??? This place isn't even a good deal. Seriously, folks. I know Montreal is not a fantastic place for Chinese food. Not like Toronto or Vancouver in Canada. But damn, this is not the place to be!!

Yelp
Service wasn't very friendly, my old shoes were more tender than the meat we got there and my spicy beef with orange tasted alarmingly like pork with orange marmalade without any heat. There were some dried chilli peppers in it, but unless you actually ate the pepper there was no spice to be had. The interior was, to put it politely, well worn and undecorated. With so many great restaurants in Montreal, I'd suggest trying a different one than this one.

Yelp
After many, many trips to Montreal I was sent here by someone who said this place holds his heart. I understand why. Plain Jane decor, beyond delicious food. Go for a Hot Pot, you will not be disappointed.

Yelp
The last time that I had set foot here was when I was about 8-10 years old. It's been awhile lol! My family was coming to visit me from Florida and requested some wontons from here. I must say that they regretted it. Sad. The wontons didn't taste like anything. It felt like I was biting in a ball of fat. It was so bland and the texture was off putting. The Cantonese chow mein lacked seasoning and the noodles were undercooked. I wish I could say something good about this place but besides the fact that the lady at the cash register was very nice to me.

Yelp
Pros: Soup, Chicken Fried Rice were on spot. Large portions. Cons: General Tao, Beef Sesame too much batter, little portion of meat used.

Update - it's still the best!

Yelp
Chinese tourists go on a trip, where do they eat dinner? Chinatown! Cliche, I know. That aside, the food here is solid. I highly recommend the "pots" which are a variation of the sizzling clay pot (variation being a super hot metal pot) where the food is cooking when it comes out. We were recommended the salted fish and tofu (being of Cantonese heritage and all) and it did not disappoint. We also ordered the eggplant pot which was REALLY GOOD. The Peking duck was much better than I expected (disclaimer: I am not really a Peking duck fan) but everyone at the table was pleased with it overall. The lobster was also good (we ordered it stir fry, Canto style) but in retrospect I think a steamed lobster would have been healthier. It was really tasty, but they deep fried it prior to stir frying, thus retaining texture and moisture and super tasty, but adding in some cooking oil I would have been fine without. I do not recommend the soup though. I don't remember which soup we ordered, but it was definitely over salted. Food came out really quick, meal for 5 took no more than 1.5 hours to order and eat. Service was friendly. No complaints there.

Yelp
They have duck soup! Just that is already good... there is not that much chinese places in town that serves duck soup... and it was quite good. The rest was average. Next time we will try to Peking Duck which might be good is the soup is an indication. Place is casual and service was fast.

Yelp
Worst tasting Chinese food I've ever eaten. Ordered a standard General Tso but couldn't eat it bc it was so bad. Also wasn't given rice with the dish.

Yelp
I tried the won ton soup and found it bland. I make better won tons than that (and I don't use MSG either). I also ordered the Braised Shrimp Balls that came on a bed of bamboo shoots and pork, but it wasn't amazing. I think it was "okay" Chinese food, but not what I was expecting. Then I tried the salt and chili fried shrimps (spicy) for $10 and I AM HOOKED. I think this is the best dish of the whole lot. Delicious, great breading, flavourful. The last dish is their "famous" Fung Shing Deep Fried Half Chicken. Meh. It was okay. I'd rather go to Rotisserie Ramados for chicken, but it wasn't awful. You will definitely need to do a light dip into that salt to make it taste good. Overall, an okay Chinese restaurant. I've had better, but then again, those chili fried shrimps (#210 on the list) were quite tasty.

Yelp
Exellent food each time I eat there with colleagues or order for home. Their wonton soup are great, chow mein and special fried rice. On top of that, price is affordable.

Yelp
Pros: food is very fresh, clean establishment, very fast, reasonably priced, generous portions, accepts credit cards, beef congee was great. Cons: none

Tara J.

Yelp
Large portions, great prices for area, delicious food. Ordered food at 6:10pm, food was ready at 6:18pm. Ordered fried dumplings (perfect), general taos chicken (delicious, pinkish so was hesitant but was fully cooked), shrimp fried rice (small size, still a huge portion, delicious, and noodles with chicken and veggies (huge serving, delicious). Lose a star for the pinkish chicken before i checked and it temp'd correctly.

Yelp
Really disappointing food and dreadful atmosphere. Ordered the soup with Peking duck and noodles. The broth was bland and the duck meat over-powering. Enjoyed the birds nest with seafood, minus the undercooked onion pieces. The chicken with cashews was not very appetizing. The chicken pieces were very tiny and greatly outnumbered by the other ingredients.

Harriet O.

Yelp
Fung shing was excellent! Large portions and very good! Service good and staff friendly.

Yelp
A quaint restaurant in the heart of Montreal's Chinatown. Big portions. Excellent food and service. Very reasonable price. We will definitely be back!!

Yelp
Been coming to Montreal for many years on tour with rock bands etc... last time I stayed, I was in the chinatown based Holiday Select and had this just around the corner. Usually I try to stop here once or twice on tour but this time... i think it was 3 or 4 times. This is some of the best authentic chinese food you can find in Montreal but since its in a dark unassuming building (nearly could be called a hole in the wall) that you would probably walk right past it. I usually order off the menu. The crispy pan fried noodles I get with Duck and Chinese Mushrooms. You have to ask for it and they look at you funny because they forget they made it for you. Trust me... it is so good... and the sauce is not overly smoky or overly soyed... it is just brilliant. The Lobster Cantonese was so good with the black bean and egg sauce that I went back for it again the next day... get that with a side of shrimp fried rice and... just amazing. Beyond words. The wonton soup is a great start with little shrimp filled wontons, followed by fried dumplings. Cannot wait to tour here again
