How the Pandemic Broadened My Horizons as a Diner - Eater

"A Chinese restaurant in Montreal received a lot of attention this week for its charmingly honest menu descriptions, including 'Comparing to our General Tao Chicken, this one is not THAT good' and 'We used to have the beef pieces on small sticks but several customers cut their lips by it, thinking it was some hard ingredient.'" - Amanda Kludt

Food - 5/5 - My partner and I ordered an array of dishes and everything was served Fresh & hot. Good value for the large portions you get. Food was delicious and hot the spot. Service - 5/5 - Was promptly seated during the end of dinner rush. We got our food quickly. They helped us pack up the left overs and even provided plastic bags to wrap the containers so they don't leave, plus a small reusable bag to carry out multiple containers. Tea was provided. My partner, being of Chinese decent, was welcomed and asked if he spoke mandarin and the employees (maybe owner or related to owner) spoke with him. Atmosphere - 4/5 - It isn't the fanciest place nor does it have much for decor but it has the vibe of a good Chinese restaurant. Overall - 5/5 - I thoroughly enjoyed their food and service. Conveniently located in the heart of Chinatown & close to bus stops. I recommend giving them a visit if you are in Montreal and craving a good Chinese meal. With an expansive menu there should be items for all to enjoy.

Worse chinese food ever !!!! I have been a long time client of this restaurant ,since the 90's, but they are getting worse and worse , nothing is good anymore . There wonton soup is not like it use to be , neither is there cantonese chowmein . Today i decided to try a few dishes that i never try before from this restaurant , that was on rebate on uber eat , mapo tofu , salt and pepper tofu and sesame beef . HORRIBLE!!!!! They put curry/cumin powder in the salt and pepper tofu , it look and taste awful and super salty !! Same thing for the mapo tofu, the taste is weird and they are using hard tofu instead soft tofu . Sesame beef has soo little meat , it is all cover with a thick soft batter. Called in to complaint ,the manager is not there , the guy that answered the phone doesnt speak french and can hardly speak english . He asked the cook, and told me that they are using a new powder/or try a new way to cook the dishes and tell me he's sorry if i dont like the taste . Well when i order an salt and peppers tofu , i expected to get that , not some experimental curry/cumin taste that has nothing to do with the original taste !!! You guys need stick to the old style chinese cooking , other wise change your menu . And you better find a new cook before you'll close your restaurant . What a disgrace!! Never again for me .

First time here today in over 20 years. It's a nice little restaurant , we came around 3pm, so there was plenty of space. The waiter was very friendly and efficient. We ordered 4 meals for our family and it was delicious. We will probably be back.

I've been going to this restaurant with my family for over two decades. The service is friendly and attentive to allergies (I am allergic to sesame seeds). The menu has something for every taste, age, and a delightful chill atmosphere. It fills my heart with joy every time I get to share a plate of general tao, tea, and good cheer. Portions are also great for the price. Highly recommended, will eat again, and again, and again...

This cozy, family run Chinese restaurant offers mouthwatering dishes that are sure to satisfy. The generous portions mean even the hungriest diner can enjoy a fulfilling meal with just one main course. Although we wish we had sampled more of their menu, the beef with broccoli showcased the challenge of perfectly balancing garlic and ginger flavors - a simple dish with sophisticated flavors. Food wasn’t greasy either.

I've eaten here many times over the years, and the food never disappoints. Favourites include corn soup, sweet pickles, and stir-fried mixed vegetables. The atmosphere is very casual and family-style - come in a group if you can, and get to taste a larger number of different dishes!

Restaurant opened since 1976 and I've been a customer for over 30 years! Dishes are authentic and prices are reasonable!

Yelp
This place is the best Chinese place in town--I've tried most of them and this restaurant is the most delicious & clean. The menu is wide-ranged but not overwhelming, and they do their best to highlight their strongest dishes--but I'm sure everything there is tasty. There are healthy options and truly delicious options as well. The Chinese-style fried chicken is the delicious high-protein option -- it comes with a yummy white pepper 5-spice salt that you can sprinkle on the chicken for extra flavor--not needed but highly recommended) this dish is a stand-out one! I ordered the half portion and it was a lot of food for one person (I still finished it!). Fung Shing shines the brightest by having fair prices AND high quality food. They serve oolong tea for free at the start and there is also nice AC and a calm environment--the staff are always so friendly and attentive and they go above and beyond to accommodate customers if they have special dietary requests/restrictions. Other recommended dishes (a healthy option) is the steamed fish with ginger and scallion--it's a delicious white fish, seasoned perfectly and has a light and tasty sauce. The fish with mixed vegetables is even healthier, and comes with bok choy and other delicious veggies. I've tried the Hong-Kong style Cantonese noodles as well and it is a true staple of the restaurant--the best I've had. I've been to China and Hong Kong several times, eaten at all the best Cantonese places and the Fung Shing version is my personal favorite! It comes with Chicken, Pork, Seafood, crispy noodles, and the classic light brown sauce -- crazy good. Another standout quality is the softness/tenderness of the chicken and rich, yet light taste of the chicken bone-broth sauce, which tastes fresh/real and delicious. The large Cantonese noodles can feed two people easily but it wouldn't be TOO much food for two hungry customers. Fung Shing is hard to spot, it's a classic hole in the wall place, almost hidden, but inside its quality shines through the food and its comforting homey environment! Look for the yellow sign close to the big arch, and enjoy one of Montreal's truly classic and classy Chinese restaurants! Thank you! ~ Mikey

Yelp
Practically the only Chinese Restaurant I liked to eat at when I'm in Chinatown. Friendly staff, good food and prices are fair for what you get. Gets kinda loud if with big crowds but generally ok. I've been living for 42years, and my family has been going there for more than 50 years. Best Wonton Noodle Soup! Hands down.

Yelp
This hole in the wall restaurant in Chinatown is very consistent. This last time I decided to go vegetarian and the food did not disappoint. I got a nice Chinese broccoli dish with steamed rice on the side and it was very tasty, flavorful and light. I ordered the sauce on the side and they obliged with no problem. The place is not fancy, but your basic old Chinese restaurant establishment. Lots of menu item to choose from.

Yelp
We were lucky to be staying so close to the Chinatown neighborhood during our stay. Simply walking around we found this place. It wasn't busy. The food was reasonably priced. And the menu looked like it would have something for both of us. We were sat right away. Gave the menu a quick glance but we already knew (mostly) what we wanted. Our server stopped by, poured tea, and took our order. We had the vegetable fried rice, rice porridge, and the general's chicken. It's was weird having diced tomatoes in the fried rice, but not a deal breaker. The chicken was probably the best breaded chicken I've ever seen. Not by taste, but by crunch. They used dark meat which was different than I used to. But the sauce was good too. It started to get very busy after we arrived. The food seemed to come out as it became ready as opposed to everything being ready for the table and then brought out. There wasn't much that was remarkable about this place. It's good for a quick bite. All the food we saw on other tables looked good. So it might warrant a second chance.

Yelp
We stopped here for a dinner as a group of 6. The service was pretty bad, very hard to get their attention. The wine was pretty terrible but the food was decent. Not much more to say, not coming back.

Yelp
This place feels like home made Chinese food. The restaurant feels like it's been there forever (which it probably has) and the servers speak canto too. Food is good portions and fast. Ordered the seafood and tofu soup (it tasted right, but it didn't have a lot of seafood), rice noodles with beef (okay, but I expected it to be hotter and greasier - true to Chinese food form), the lemon chicken (actually quite chicken heavy), and the fried tofu and veggies (this was too much veggie and my enough fried tofu).

Yelp
Service wasn't very friendly, my old shoes were more tender than the meat we got there and my spicy beef with orange tasted alarmingly like pork with orange marmalade without any heat. There were some dried chilli peppers in it, but unless you actually ate the pepper there was no spice to be had. The interior was, to put it politely, well worn and undecorated. With so many great restaurants in Montreal, I'd suggest trying a different one than this one.

Yelp
After many, many trips to Montreal I was sent here by someone who said this place holds his heart. I understand why. Plain Jane decor, beyond delicious food. Go for a Hot Pot, you will not be disappointed.

Yelp
The last time that I had set foot here was when I was about 8-10 years old. It's been awhile lol! My family was coming to visit me from Florida and requested some wontons from here. I must say that they regretted it. Sad. The wontons didn't taste like anything. It felt like I was biting in a ball of fat. It was so bland and the texture was off putting. The Cantonese chow mein lacked seasoning and the noodles were undercooked. I wish I could say something good about this place but besides the fact that the lady at the cash register was very nice to me.

Yelp
In my opinion, the best cantonese restaurant in montreal... highlights peking hot soup - the most tasty hot & sour soup i have ever tasted roast BBQ duck - the best meat on the menu beef in a hot pot chinese brocoli & oyster sauce cantonese chow mein - noodles are so crispy! Update - it's still the best!

Yelp
Pros: Soup, Chicken Fried Rice were on spot. Large portions. Cons: General Tao, Beef Sesame too much batter, little portion of meat used.

Yelp
Chinese tourists go on a trip, where do they eat dinner? Chinatown! Cliche, I know. That aside, the food here is solid. I highly recommend the "pots" which are a variation of the sizzling clay pot (variation being a super hot metal pot) where the food is cooking when it comes out. We were recommended the salted fish and tofu (being of Cantonese heritage and all) and it did not disappoint. We also ordered the eggplant pot which was REALLY GOOD. The Peking duck was much better than I expected (disclaimer: I am not really a Peking duck fan) but everyone at the table was pleased with it overall. The lobster was also good (we ordered it stir fry, Canto style) but in retrospect I think a steamed lobster would have been healthier. It was really tasty, but they deep fried it prior to stir frying, thus retaining texture and moisture and super tasty, but adding in some cooking oil I would have been fine without. I do not recommend the soup though. I don't remember which soup we ordered, but it was definitely over salted. Food came out really quick, meal for 5 took no more than 1.5 hours to order and eat. Service was friendly. No complaints there.

Yelp
They have duck soup! Just that is already good... there is not that much chinese places in town that serves duck soup... and it was quite good. The rest was average. Next time we will try to Peking Duck which might be good is the soup is an indication. Place is casual and service was fast.

Yelp
I tried the won ton soup and found it bland. I make better won tons than that (and I don't use MSG either). I also ordered the Braised Shrimp Balls that came on a bed of bamboo shoots and pork, but it wasn't amazing. I think it was "okay" Chinese food, but not what I was expecting. Then I tried the salt and chili fried shrimps (spicy) for $10 and I AM HOOKED. I think this is the best dish of the whole lot. Delicious, great breading, flavourful. The last dish is their "famous" Fung Shing Deep Fried Half Chicken. Meh. It was okay. I'd rather go to Rotisserie Ramados for chicken, but it wasn't awful. You will definitely need to do a light dip into that salt to make it taste good. Overall, an okay Chinese restaurant. I've had better, but then again, those chili fried shrimps (#210 on the list) were quite tasty.

Yelp
Worst tasting Chinese food I've ever eaten. Ordered a standard General Tso but couldn't eat it bc it was so bad. Also wasn't given rice with the dish.

Yelp
Exellent food each time I eat there with colleagues or order for home. Their wonton soup are great, chow mein and special fried rice. On top of that, price is affordable.

Kristine K.

Yelp
Pros: food is very fresh, clean establishment, very fast, reasonably priced, generous portions, accepts credit cards, beef congee was great. Cons: none

Tara J.

Yelp
Large portions, great prices for area, delicious food. Ordered food at 6:10pm, food was ready at 6:18pm. Ordered fried dumplings (perfect), general taos chicken (delicious, pinkish so was hesitant but was fully cooked), shrimp fried rice (small size, still a huge portion, delicious, and noodles with chicken and veggies (huge serving, delicious). Lose a star for the pinkish chicken before i checked and it temp'd correctly.

Yelp
Really disappointing food and dreadful atmosphere. Ordered the soup with Peking duck and noodles. The broth was bland and the duck meat over-powering. Enjoyed the birds nest with seafood, minus the undercooked onion pieces. The chicken with cashews was not very appetizing. The chicken pieces were very tiny and greatly outnumbered by the other ingredients.

Harriet O.

Yelp
Fung shing was excellent! Large portions and very good! Service good and staff friendly.

Yelp
Been coming to Montreal for many years on tour with rock bands etc... last time I stayed, I was in the chinatown based Holiday Select and had this just around the corner. Usually I try to stop here once or twice on tour but this time... i think it was 3 or 4 times. This is some of the best authentic chinese food you can find in Montreal but since its in a dark unassuming building (nearly could be called a hole in the wall) that you would probably walk right past it. I usually order off the menu. The crispy pan fried noodles I get with Duck and Chinese Mushrooms. You have to ask for it and they look at you funny because they forget they made it for you. Trust me... it is so good... and the sauce is not overly smoky or overly soyed... it is just brilliant. The Lobster Cantonese was so good with the black bean and egg sauce that I went back for it again the next day... get that with a side of shrimp fried rice and... just amazing. Beyond words. The wonton soup is a great start with little shrimp filled wontons, followed by fried dumplings. Cannot wait to tour here again

Yelp
A quaint restaurant in the heart of Montreal's Chinatown. Big portions. Excellent food and service. Very reasonable price. We will definitely be back!!
