Futura Osteria

"Situated along the Via Francigena near Monteriggioni the small medieval village of Abbadia Isola boasts a superb Romanesque church and a group of old buildings that once housed a monastery and its outbuildings. The Futura Osteria occupies the cellars where the monks once stored their wines, which now provides the setting for simple, delicious and resolutely seasonal Tuscan-inspired cuisine offering good value for money. The refined wine list, simple service and secluded terrace complete the picture." - Michelin Inspector

A stylish and smart casual spot serving fine dining. The restaurant offers several prix fix menus for a single price, ranging from 3 dishes to 7 dishes ranging in price from 30€ to 70€. Each option allows for a selection of certain dishes. We both went with a 5 course menu. Our Antipasto: he has the chickpea salad with olives, pecorino cheese, tomato and arugula. The ingredients were so fresh and high quality that it made for an astonishingly delicious start to the meal. She had the escargot served in tomato sauce - these were the freshest snails we’ve ever had. The texture was divine and they had a unique delicate flavour. The rich tomato sauce that went with it was so good we used bread to mop up every drop. For Primi: Hehad the zucchini pesto fusilli which seemed to have a nice undertone of walnuts (that’s our guess). Very unique! She had the traditional tortellini, with a flavour packed cheese filling, served in fresh warm cream. This is a lesson in how simplicity is powerful when all the ingredient are top notch. For secondi we both had the “chicken nuggets” which is actually chicken rolled with sage, and covered with a prosciutto like ham - this is possibly the most juicy and perfectly cooked chicken we’ve ever had. The texture had us in awe, it takes an expert cook to accomplish this. The cheese course was a lovely piece of fresh soft cheese, made locally and fresh as can be. Dessert was a lovely moist cake with an ample amount of mouse-like chocolate cream and amarena - a black cherry syrup. With two glasses of wine our meal came out to 92€. This was a fantastic meal, offering wonderful flavours and textures beginning to end. We highly recommend it.

We left very disappointed. We chose to have 5 course menu. The first dish was okay- simple but good. Second one- beef stock with vegetables, I can make the same or even better at home. The main was meat on a stick with peas purée- too salty, lack of balance. The fourth dish- a piece of cheese! A piece without nothing.. no comments. It is not a dish, maybe a chef’s compliment or something but not a dish. And for the final- super strong alcohol flavored vanilla sponge on a burnt chocolate sauce with some kind of lemon creme on top. I am sorry but the dinner we had was not worth the money at all.

While the menu was innovative and interesting and the dishes tasty, we must have hit a bad evening regarding service. One restaurant waiter (restaurant manager?) for 8 tables (20 diners were the maximum) meant long waits. We were told that many had been turned away, but having only one person serving seems like a false economy and bad business decision as it left us feeling that we would not return to this restaurant regardless of the quality of the food and the pleasant location. Maybe the kitchen was also under-staffed, but to wait 35 minutes for a creme caramel from the fridge and an espresso (the waiter could not remember what I had ordered and so had to ask after 30 minutes what coffee I wanted). We enjoy slow meals and have eaten wonderful relaxed meals over our two weeks in Tuscany, but this left us feeling that we had made a bad choice for our penultimate evening. Let's hope it was just a bit of bad luck and not what usually happens to guests.

We had a lovely dinner here. The restaurant was located in a lovely setting, the staff were kind, polite and attentive and the food and drink was locally sourced, fresh and most importantly of all, very delicious.

Lovely little restaurant with interesting dishes inspired by the local cuisine. Especially loved the little turnip and Gorgonzola pie. Yummy!

A tiny tusacan restaurant, with food that taste like heaven! The one waiter who served the restaurant is maybe the most Italy man I've ever meet! If you want a fantastic meal alongside a fantastic atmosphere! This is the place to be! Highly recommend the meatloaf!
