The Best Cha Chaan Tengs In SF - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"G&Y should be studied for its efficiency. Seats are assigned as soon as you step into this Chinatown spot (oftentimes alongside strangers to make most use of the space), servers take your order within minutes, and food appears near-instantly. It’s our pick when we’re in the area and want a quick, satisfying rice or noodle plate for around $15—namely the minced beef with green beans. Bring cash unless you’re okay with a 3% credit card surcharge." - patrick wong, julia chen 1

G&Y Bakery & Cafe - Review - Chinatown - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"If there’s one thing that G&Y seems to get, it’s efficiency. The longstanding cha chaan teng in Chinatown is a frictionless operation. You’re assigned a table as soon as you walk in—oftentimes alongside some strangers to maximize space. A staff member will ask for your order before you’ve even had a chance to crack open the laminated menu, and dishes arrive within minutes. Sure, none of the food would make a highlight reel of Hong Kong-style classics, but it’s all solid and filling, and at less than $15, a great choice for something quick in the area. Focus on the plate combos—namely the minced beef with green beans that’s served with a glossy, garlicky gravy (get it with rice instead of noodles). Neighborhood regulars dominate this spot most hours of the day, so if you value having your own table, try coming during off-hours and avoid weekends when you’ll also need to compete with tourists for a seat. video credit: Patrick Wong" - Patrick Wong

Google
We saw this location and we decided to try it out. It was fairly busy but we did find a table. Service was good. Food was average for Chinatown. Although it was a bit pricey. A plate of small chicken wings was $17. I felt that it was a ten dollar dish at most.

Just around the corner from Stockton St and Clay St. Arrived on a Tues at around 10am and the restaurant was half filled. You pick your own seat and order when the waitress comes. I ordered the A3 which is the fried pork chop with eggs, French fries and toast. I added Hong Kong milk tea. The pork chop was crispy but needed a bit more salt. Same as the French fries. Just ask for a salt shaker. Good value for a hearty breakfast. Total was 11.75$ with tax included. The place was filled with locals. Service was a bit slow, took 15 minutes for my food to be brought to me. Maybe I ordered the least popular item? 🤔

Food is quite authentic and flavorful! I enjoyed all the dishes. The clay pot tasted really fresh, the tofu with fish is juicy and tender, the beef noodles and Hong Kong noodles are well seasoned and rich in flavor. I would love to come back and try other stuff here.

Finally had a chance to try this place out after passing by when it was full capacity many times. It’s like a Hong Kong style cafe with many great choices to choose from. Service was great and was worth the wait. During the morning they only serve breakfast items and for the dishes that require the wok you will have to wait for later. Definitely will be back when I’m in the area!

Pretty standard HK-style breakfast. Nothing spectacular and nothing to complain about. Quick service and decently priced.

Google
The food was good, service is very fast, we had 3 main dishes and 2 cokes, we pay less than 50$. Chicken chow mein was really good. I would not recommend the beef and tomato chow mein, it was more like spaghetti with tomato sauce, but it was good still. The vegetables with beef stew over rice was good but the stew meat was not lean and rather fatty.

I have been wanting clay pot rice for a while and did a little research; this restaurant popped up. We had the following: Combo in Clay Pot Rice: The combination of Chinese sausage, chicken, and mushrooms was a harmonious blend of flavors. The crispy, slightly burnt rice from the clay pot added a delightful crunch. It’s a must-try for those who appreciate texture and depth in their meal. Beef Chow Fun: The wok hei (wok breath) was evident, infusing the wide rice noodles with a smoky flavor. The tender beef slices complemented the dish perfectly. A definite winner. Wonton Soup: The soup base leaned toward the sweeter side, which might not be everyone’s preference. However, the wontons were plump and flavorful. If you have a sweet tooth, this soup will hit the spot. Hong Kong Milk Tea: The iconic blend of coffee and tea! G&Y Bakery’s version did not disappoint. Creamy, aromatic, and a comforting choice for any time of day.

Google
Love this place! Strongly recommend their iced lemon tea and hongkong milks tea. It is strong and flavorful. The Chinese donut is delicious with congee, which is thick and aromatic. The clay pot is so flavorful and savory! I love that is is served sizzling. That sound immediately made me hungry. The restaurant is very clean and I love their welcoming service. Strongly recommend!

Yelp
Amazing place for HK style food. I always order the chow fun, and it's reminiscent of the flavors I tried when I visited Hong Kong. Though it gets pretty busy at times on the weekends, the food always comes out so quickly. You can't go wrong with any of their food or drinks.

Yelp
While touring Chinatown we randomly stumbled upon this hole-in-the-wall, mom-and-pop spot serving Hong Kong-style food--and it definitely had that hole-in-the-wall vibe. The place felt authentic and low-key, with a simple setup and a no-frills atmosphere. It seemed to cater slightly to locals, as there were quite a few dining in and the afternoon specials were listed only in Chinese. That said, the main menu was in both Chinese and English. Prices were mid-range. Everything tasted about as expected. I ordered the wonton soup myself, which came with about six dumplings and two pieces of bok choy. The flavor was standard--nothing surprising. When I split my last dumpling to share, I noticed it was very pink inside. Around the same time, the waitress came by to ask if we could pay early, and she happened to notice the dumpling. She immediately insisted on bringing a fresh batch and brought out three more. We split those to check, and they were albeit better, but still slightly pink. I'm all for supporting mom-and-pop shops, and this might've just been a one-off situation. Still, if you go and order the wontons, try splitting one first--just to be safe. Let me know what you find.

Yelp
Came for lunch on a Saturday. G&Y was packed and we had to wait about 15 minutes for a table. Heads up that they will "stack" tables during rushes, meaning you may be asked to share your table with other customers. We ordered a clay pot rice, baked seafood spaghetti, and chicken wings. Food was fine but not great. The clay pot rice didn't have a lot of crispy rice, and most of the rice was pretty soggy and flavorless. The meat also had a lot of bones, making it hard to eat. The baked seafood spaghetti was fine but lacked sauce. The chicken wings were probably the best item we got. Because they were so busy, our meal was really lackluster. After ordering, we sat at our completely empty table for 25+ minutes without silverware or even water. We tried flagging someone down for water but everyone was busy. The first item to arrive was actually our clay pot rice, but we didn't have any bowls, so we had to flag someone down to bring us bowls before we could begin eating. Our chicken wings were the last item to arrive even though they were supposed to be our appetizer. Our drinks also took forever to come out. We were easily sitting at our table eating for 45 minutes before our drinks came out (and again, no water the entire meal). All the tables around us seemed frustrated/like they were waiting for something as well, whether it was placing their order, getting silverware/plates/water, getting the bill, etc. A lot of people were also getting fed up of waiting and just walking to the counter to get their own sauce, silverware, etc. Lastly, we paid in cash, and when our server brought our change back to us, she mumbled something about requiring at minimum 10% tip before putting our money down. Not sure exactly what she said and also didn't appreciate it (my guess is she was worried we weren't going to tip beyond the change). Overall not a great experience, and the quality of food definitely did not make up for the missing service.

Yelp
I've been here once before, but this time came specifically for their spaghetti sauced dishes. I was also craving fried chicken, so I got some popcorn chicken. I was pretty disappointed by the portion size of their popcorn chicken, given the pricing. There was a sad amount on the plate, which made it look a little like the leftovers of a previous meal. The main dish, however, was quite large. I ordered it over rice instead of spaghetti, but the pork chop in it was cooked well. The sauce was a little underseasoned (maybe on purpose? I haven't had the dish before), but tasted great after I adjusted it. The nice thing is that there is certainly a lot of sauces/spices that you can grab on the counter to adjust/fix your food! I think I'm not personally all that likely to come back here on my own, though my friend is a regular so I might be back anyway. The main dish was pretty good, the price wasn't all that cheap, and the popcorn chicken was too sad.

Yelp
We came here after a street fair on Grant Avenue. Every restaurant was packed, so we waited for a table here. It is not the sort of place where people linger over a fine meal, so we waited less than 45 minutes for a table. We shared Singapore noodles and beef stew over rice. Food was ok. Prices are very reasonable.

Yelp
Came in on a Saturday morning a little after they opened, only a few tables with customers. Small dinning area and small breakfast menu. The service was good. Beef Stew Wuntun Ho Fun was okay, the broth wasn't that flavorful, the beef was a little tough and wuntun was average. B2 - Preserved Vegetable with Beef and rice noodles was the same just okay. Broth not flavorful and it came out with pork instead of beef. But the prices is pretty good

Yelp
Went as I was craving some baked HK rice There was a line when I went, so it was crowded and tables were packed. Ordering was quick/friendly Items: - Popcorn chicken : Not for you if you are expecting popcorn chicken from boba shops. It is more like the salt and pepper chicken wings (with garlic and jalapeno), but small pieces of chicken instead! Flavor could have been slightly stronger. - Baked pork chops spaghetti & Baked seafood rice: The white sauce was better than the red one. The pork chop would've been better over rice as the rice is egg fried rice. Overall, it was decent, but isn't my top places to go to

Yelp
Popular breakfast spot for locals. Mid prices but everything is on the "thin" side. Small amount of noodles in wonton noodle soup, thin congee, very thin pork cutlet. Flavors were right. Whole restaurant was serviced by one person outside the kitchen.

Yelp
Sometimes you just need to satisfy a morning carb craving and nothing does that better than soy sauce stir fried noodles (豉油王炒麵 / sze yau wong chow meen) with a side of congee. G&Y is one of the few places left that offers this, and it does the job. The place could use regular deep cleans, but it's a few steps above VIP cafe and New Lun Ting. Also pictured is condensed milk toast (lai jerng doh) made with two slices of toast slathered with peanut butter and condensed milk in the middle. Not for me but the husband is so happy whenever he sees this on any menu.

Yelp
A decent meal at G&Y - dumplings, popcorn chicken, and a scallion pancake. Thai iced coffee and honey lemon drink to whet our throats. Quick service, tasty food. If I remember correctly, $34 for the meal. A spontaneous drop-in, if we're in the City again, we'd certainly be back

Yelp
Good place for hk style food. They have a menu in chinese to the right of the entrance that has lunch deals. String beans with beef over rice - 4.5/5, delicious! Lots of tender green beans and beef with lots of sauce. Sauce is good with rice since it's very flavorful. Singapore rice noodle - 4/5, singapore style curry rice noodle with lots of cha siu and egg. Good, but is quite powdery compared to other places.

Yelp
I really liked this restaurant! I ordered the scrambled egg and beef over noodle and their iced lemon tea--both Cantonese cha chaan teng classics! The food was HOT. Service was great too, I would definitely come back.

Yelp
Wait Time: No wait (on a Sunday Evening) Unique Factor: 2/5 - One of the few Classic Hong Kong Cafe style cuisine still around in the Bay Area. The menu is a mixture of the Hong Kong Cafe classics, along with a Chinese America flare. Nostalgic cuisine to us ABCs. We ordered a Chicken in Black Pepper Sauce Spaghetti, Baked Seafood Rice, Baked Pork Chop Spaghetti (but accidentally received rice). The portions were generous, and flavors as expected. The staff even offered a complimentary order of fried sesame balls for the mix up in the carbs. Service: Casual, not a lot of service, but also nothing to complain about.

Yelp
Not sure why all the good reviews. I got the 盐酥鸡 salt fried chicken 3/5. Decent flavor but need a bit more salt; hot and sour soup 酸辣汤 1/5 it was sooo bad omg and I have never seen tomato in it before.

Yelp
Very solid Hong Kong style cafe! The Sam See Fried Rice Noodle was my favorite. The noodles were slightly thicker than what I traditionally see but still incredibly flavorful and tasty. The combo clay pot rice was pretty standard. The preserved egg and pork porridge was more on the bland side but the texture was still on point. The iced lemon tea (50% sweetness) was really good! The waiters were very friendly and food was served quickly. For a party of 2, we didn't need to wait for a Saturday lunch.

Yelp
This place is going in the rotation for sure! Finally another bussin hk cafe spot. I ordered the beef satay noodles, salt/pepper wings, lemon black tea and got a free porridge with their uber eats promo. Will be going to the restaurant to try the lunch items with my mom soon.

Yelp
Very delicious HK cafe food, so nostalgic for those of us who grew up eating at cafes or restaurants like this! I'm glad that my boyfriend and I came upon this restaurant while exploring Chinatown. The food I will give a 5/5 because the flavors and the hot sauce provided are just so delicious. However, service would get a 2/5; I waited almost 40 minutes for my popcorn chicken and hot&sour soup. I had to ask three separate times before someone finally brought it out. It left a pretty sour impression on the service but the food was quite worth it. The ambiance is what you'd expect, family-friendly and loud. Honestly, it's very fitting. It really felt like I was visiting family in HK and eating at some local diner. Recommend if you're not in a huge hurry or starving.

Yelp
A very popular Hong Kong style cafe that may have a wait during the busiest times and might seat you with a stranger. Food is very reasonably priced for San Francisco, meaning you could probably leave quite satisfied spending $20 or less. Lots of interesting menu items to explore... or just point at someone else's dish that looks interesting. Original Milk Tea: You can see a little bit of the sweetened condensed milk running down the sides. Even more on the bottom, if you don't stir vigorously. It was sufficiently milky and sweet enough. Iced Original Milk Tea: Large glass so felt like there was milk tea here, even after factoring in the ice. While it was refreshing, didn't give the diner feel of a nice warm cup. French Toast: A very eggy take on French toast. A bit too savory naked, but I did like dipping into the sweet syrup on the side. Satay Pepper Chicken Wing: These were so crispy! No fatty bits or limp skin, so maybe they twice-fried it like Korean-style? Loved the subtle flavor of salt, fried garlic and chilis. Macaroni w/ Ham: It was like they took wonton soup broth, loaded in macaroni and put in a bunch of slices of ham. Felt like something a busy parent might throw together for a hungry toddler with limited food preferences. But I was loving it, hit all the right notes for me. Combo Clay Pot Rice: They lied. it's not a clay pot, it's a metal pot. Though it's a good lie, since I think the metal pot does a better job crisping the rice on the bottom. Loved all the various meats in the combo, since it provided a nice variety. The Chinese bacon was especially delicious. The Chinese sausage was ok, but very intense, so needed to balance it out with the greens. It's nice they give you the sauce on the side, so you can pour on what you like. Love the dramatic sizzling and steaming when you first pour it on. House Special Pan Fried Rice Noodle: Love the texture contrast here. The top is covered in crispy triangles made up from noodles. It's pretty cool that one side is crispy and one side is noodle-y. Then underneath that is a bunch of various meat bits, some onions and highly sauced noodles. Like seriously don't wear a good shirt because you're almost guaranteed to splatter.

Yelp
San Francisco has so many coffee shops, bars, restaurants...so many Chinese restaurants and a labyrinth/maze...Chinatown...randomly assorted gift shops and bistro cafe restaurants...ones that you never thought you would get around to try...G and Y is a new one for me...I would go with my family...what's new? I saw one young adult girl eating by herself with the fried jook donut...I ordered a grass jelly ice cream...awesome! and a beef jook...also wanted a ham/spam sandwich...$17.50...would have liked to go with my mom...Chinatown is far...so much to do, so little time...I enjoyed trying a different bistro Hong Kong cafe...walking around and stumbling into different restaurants that are open...so strange and mind-boggling...who would have come up with that idea or concept...existential Chinese food...

Yelp
We were visiting the city and gave this spot a try on a whim thanks to some cravings and solid Yelp reviews. We are glad we stopped by, G&Y Bakery Restaurant hit the spot! They serve a huge variety of Cantonese foods, including foods that are cafe style. They even serve a variety of milk tea and other boba types of drinks. The menu is really extensive, and food comes out quickly after you order it. We ordered a bit of everything and enjoyed all of it. The food was tasty, not too greasy, and not too salty. Also, prices were reasonable (especially considered to other restaurants in SF or around the Bay Area), and portions were generous. * Wonton noodle soup: Delicious and clean tasting - noodles were a great texture, and wontons were nice, big, and full of filling; this was probably a bit salty, but otherwise, it really hit the spot * Chicken fried rice: Delicious, not too salty or greasy * Tofu and pork belly clay pot: Braised in a delicious brown gravy, perfect over rice (probably the saltiest of all dishes) * Egg and shrimp over rice: Exactly what we wanted, one of our favorite dishes - only complain is that there was a bit too much rice, but it's okay as we used the rice for other dishes * Popcorn chicken: We enjoyed it - this is NOT the same taste as Taiwanese popcorn chicken * Crispy noodles with meat: This was really tasty; we've had this at other places, and this is the best we've had it - great ratio of meat (they use three different meats), nowhere near as greasy as other places, nice amount and ratio of filling (gravy, meat, bean sprouts) to the outside noodles * Milk tea / Fruit drinks: This is probably the only item I would pass on - the drinks were okay and great for the price, but not the best part of this restaurant by any means If we lived closer, we would definitely make G&Y Bakery Restaurant a regular stop.

Yelp
A solid HK style cafe! came by for some clay pot rice and it definitely hit the spot. I loved all the crispy rice as it added a nice change in textures. We also ordered the french toast & chicken wings. The french toast was pretty egg forward which I enjoy, but definitely can lean more savory. It does come with some syrup on the side so that you can dunk it to your heart's desire. The chicken wings were a bit of a miss for me, while they were nice and crispy, at $2 a piece I was hoping they'd be a bit more sizable. About half the wings were quite small and for me it was also a tad salty. Overall though, it was a hearty and tasty meal. Don't forget to wash it down with a HK milk tea or an iced lemon tea!

Yelp
Been wanting to try some new restaurants in Chinatown and my parents and I randomly decided to try this one after looking at their menu. The inside was very clean and had lots of seating. We were seated right when we came in around 5 pm on a Saturday. What stood out were the dishes as my parents said were some of the most similar to ones we have had in Hong Kong and our entire meal including all of us getting drinks was only 46 dollars without tip. Stewed Pork Chop over Spaghetti - I love Hong Kong style spaghetti so always am wanting to try it when at a new restaurant. The portion was really big and had many pieces of pork chop that were soft. Everything was covered in the vibrant sauce that added creaminess and a delicious tomato flavor. My parents ordered their Curry Beef Stew and Beef Stew Wonton Noodles, both which they really enjoyed for their portion size and the flavor. Overall, I would definitely come back again to try other dishes from their expansive menu.

Yelp
A classic cantonese and hong kong cafe dining experience in Chinatown. Their menu is huge so you're sure to find something that you enjoy. The food is affordable and they give large portions. The service is pretty standard for an hk cafe-quick and efficient. It can get a little busy on the weekends but the food still comes out pretty quickly! My go-to's are the preserved egg and pork porridge. They give a lot of preserved egg and the porridge is so comforting. It's well seasoned, so I don't feel the need to add additional pepper or soy sauce. The baked pork chop is another comfort food that I opt for. It's slathered in a slightly tart tomato sauce and comes with a large pork chop. For beverages, the HK milk tea is solid and not too sweet!
google avatar

Tiffany D.

Yelp
Hong Kong specialty cafe here! Bitter melon with pork ribs clay pot is a specialty that one can't find a lot in other places! It was so homely! Their baked pork chop with rice/spaghetti is also a Hong Kong dish and I opted for the rice. It was so fragrant and came out piping hot. Mongolian beef was yummy! They offer whole dishes without the rice as an option versus with rice. Beef chow fun was on point. I adore their house made specialty hot sauce. Hong Milk coffee tea (Yin Yeung) was also another specialty drink not found in a lot of places. Signature Hong Kong cafe entrees served up here! Lovely!

Yelp
They had a Saturday special - $12 for a plate and a cup of milk tea. The chicken curry had a bit too much turmeric for my liking, but overall good.
google avatar

Reanne Z.

Yelp
Came on a Saturday, it's busy on the weekends but tables open up quickly. Solid food and good portions for the price! Their HK-style milk tea is also good! We got the tomato minced beef and rice plate, and beef stew and wonton soup for $35 +tax and tip for 2 people. Overall, a good place to grab a quick and filling meal!
google avatar

Leslie L.

Yelp
well, you may not be able to get a big assortment of bakery items here - you will be able to get the most delicious red bean sesame balls that melt in your mouth like hot donuts. Enjoy!
google avatar

Anna W.

Yelp
Came for lunch on Saturday. Ordered minced beef with egg over rice . Fried chicken with French fries. Ice less sweet lemon tea . The food was delicious. I would definitely come back to try different dishes.
google avatar

Yelp
Their menu prices are increasing but the portion sizes are definitely getting smaller. Ordered vegetable with beef stew over rice, fish fillet porridge, and salt and pepper pork chop dish. The beef stew was not tender and needed to be cooked longer. The meat was tough and stringy. The fish fillet porridge didn't come with much fish and the porridge was on the watery, liquid consistency and not like thick porridge. The salt and pepper pork chops were too salty, not crispy, and definitely came with less this time in the dish. Customer service was slow. I had to walk up to the front counter to ask for plates and utensils that should normally be placed on the table by the serving staff. The condiments such as hot sauce was also missing from the table, which I had to go get myself. Don't expect the waitress to check in on your table or ask how you like the food. You'll see the waitress once when she asks you what you want to order. Even asking for the check requires you to try multiple attempts to get their attention. We only come here from time to time because it's conveniently located to the places we visit. Otherwise there are better options nearby. I definitely felt the food was not worth the price paid and the service is lacking.

Yelp
Food: 3/5 For someone who has quite deep Cantonese roots, this food was honestly meh. In the 21st century terms.... the food was honestly mid. While I had enjoyed the food overall some dishes were just either too salty or not salted enough. I did like the sauciness of the dishes we chose, though. Service: 2/5 For being a Christmas night at 6pm, reserving a spot wasn't really so bad. However, upon entering, no one really helped us, let alone helping my grandma. What really ticked me off was the fact that they never really checked up on us despite the fact that we were busy. The dishes came up late despite the fact other people got seated a little later and still got their food faster than we did. We didn't get our tip back, and barely the servers nudged a word (although we were expecting that they wouldn't give it back to us anyways)... and honestly i wished that a little bit of communication was given to us. Atmosphere: 3/5 It was really crowded for dinner time... which isn't surprising. However, people left and right were looking at us in a weird way, as if we didn't know what was going on, which I did not like. Maybe i would come again, just not at dinner time... because the service that was given to us really did not meet my expectations... at least this time. Who knows if it will later on down the road?

Yelp
Came with a friend for lunch. It's a pretty standard Hong Kong style cafe bustling on a Saturday late morning. First ordered a sweet Hong Kong coffee and toast, which was buttery although not as hot as I thought it'd be served. The waiter was great at giving some recommendations, and surprised us with this special crispy noodle dish. the noodles on this uniquely arranged dish was probably the best part - it was super crispy on the outside and the inside was soft from soaking in the peppery-slightly salty gravy. The bitter melon inside was soft, and there was a very generous amount of beef. Overall, solid dishes I'd order again if I came back.

Yelp
My favorite spot to go for Hong Kong style food. Overtime, this place has felt like home to me. The sweet lady running the restaurant is so kind & always treats me and my friends with respect when we eat here. Even when they are super busy, there is great service. I come here about 1-2 times a month, and they consistently have great noodle dishes. Their flat rice noodles are very good, I like them best in the egg and shrimp sauce & beef chow fun. They also have great classic hong kong milk tea here, a stable that i always enjoy.

Yelp
Very good customer service and the food is very good at very reasonable good price. Sunday afternoon I have seen are not a people coming in also I can plug in my cell phone to charge and in Chinatown as no Where I can get that

Yelp
I love when a restaurant feels like home. G&Y Bakery Restaurant has so many options on their menu that transports me back to my childhood, eating food that my grandparents and parents would cook often. From Cantonese staples like beef chow fun to harder to find entrees like clay pot rice, no doubt you will find something that hits those cravings. The feel of the restaurant is very homey. You can walk in and claim any available table. It really felt like home when the staff spoke to me in Toisan. I ordered the shrimp chow fun and the preserved meat clay pot. The shrimp gravy was perfectly blended with egg and shrimp. The consistency of the gravy was perfect and there was a good gravy to chow fun ratio. The chow fun was lightly fried with soy sauce so it had good flavor. The preserved meat clay pot was great. They serve it with soy sauce on the side and you can add as much as you need for the flavor of your liking. I wished the dish had a little more flavor though without the help of soy sauce. But overall, still a solid meal. And the pot was hot enough to produce the crispy layer of rice most people want out of that dish. Portions were really generous. I had plenty to take back as leftovers for the next day. I was a little disappointed that they charged me for each takeout box and bag ($0.25 each). That was a first experience for me. Restaurant is located in Chinatown so parking could be hard to find.

Yelp
Sweet Egg & Corn Soup - Nice and warm, but needed more seasoning, maybe even just salt and pepper. It helped a bit when I added soy sauce, but I still felt like it was bland and lacking something. Satay & Pepper Chicken Wings - These had a great crispiness to them! Again, I think it needed a lot more seasoning. The garlic flavor on it was nice, but it could've used more of that. Chinese Bacon & Sausage Clay Pot - The veggies on it were a nice addition, and I loved the crispy bits of rice from the bottom of the clay pot. They gave us soy sauce to add which helped a bit, but I felt like this was nothing special. Just chinese bacon & sausage on top of rice - something I can make at home. Sweet & Sour Pork - Pretty standard sweet & sour pork, but delicious. Again, I feel like it was missing some seasoning. Overall, I don't have too much to say about this place. It was decent, but all the food felt a bit bland. Not sure if I caught them on a bad day, but I would choose to try other places in the area the next time I come back!

Yelp
Some good hong kong style food! This place gets pretty busy at dinner time. The food did take a bit of time to come out (esp the clay pot) but I liked it overall! - Chicken wings were juicy and had good flavor, but not as crispy as I prefer - Baked pork chop pasta was so saucy and slightly sweet. The pork chop was tender too! I just wish they had more cheese and other stuff in the pasta - Clay pot was good, esp the mushrooms and pork

Yelp
Came for lunch today at G&Y. Their menu is pretty extensive so I was a little overwhelmed on what to order. They serve breakfast until 11am. They have porridge, appetizers, sandwiches, soups, rice noodles, macaroni, rice plates, spaghetti plates, curry, fried rice plates, noodle plates, clay pot and stir fry. Whew! It's a lot. I ended up ordering their combo clay pot and asked for Chinese sausage and chicken. It comes with 2 bok choy. At initial glance, it looked like a lot of food but the clay pot was very shallow with minimal amounts of rice. There were more Chinese sausage than chicken and the chicken pieces had some fat attached to it. Meat quality was not the best. The two bok choy was big & juicy. A majority of the rice was majorly burnt on the bottom, could not eat. The clay pot was bland, I used the soy sauce in a little white kettle given to me and it was still bland. I also ordered a honey lemon hot tea. I did not taste honey in there and therefore was just hot lemon tea which gave off a sour taste. The server handed me a bottle of white sugar to add to the tea. I would much prefer the honey that was advertised versus using white sugar. Service was friendly. The clay pot took 25 mins to cook so wait time was quite long. The gigantic mural on the way depicts a busy Hong Kong scene with taxis, buses, pedestrians, etc. They do try hard to have the feeling that you are dining in a busy Hong Kong café.

Yelp
Flew in for a conference and had to have some cheap Cantonese eats like I did when I went to Cal decades ago. The reviews and rating are spot on. This place rocks!! Had seafood porridge and beef noodle soup, rocks, authentic and so good

Yelp
This is a great spot for Hong Kong style food. It is so comforting as someone who loves this type of cuisine. Their teas are authentic in that they are dark but not bitter. The way the food is served also adds to the vibe. It is a very casual spot. It is ideal if you can speak Cantonese but they also understand English as well. Although the baked pork chop with orange tomato sauce was underwhelming, the hot clay pot rice was amazing! You must try this restaurant's clay pot rice. We got the combination one that had a little bit of everything. The rice is perfectly crisp and easy to scoop. The portion is perfect for one person and the price is reasonable. Definitely would want to come back for afternoon tea or for their breakfast menu

Yelp
Food - friend ordered the afternoon tea menu (noodles) and I ordered the clay pot from the regular menu. Noodles - was pretty basic. Had some veggies and pieces of meat. Nothing too exciting or memorable about it. Clay pot - meat and veggies were good. Overall kinda bland. They do give you some soy sauce for it, but it was super thick and weirded me out. Some of the rice was so burnt I didn't eat it. Drink - ordered lemon tea drink. Not sweet enough; a little too sour for my liking. Service - good, prompt. Ambiance - feels home-y, hole in the wall.

Yelp
Weekend Breakfast Review Had their * thousand year old egg congee -- tastes just like it should! came with some chinese donut * fried chicken wings -- wow what a burst of flavor! * steak and eggs and toast -- steak was thin but flavorful. had to ask for the toast separately! * macaroni soup with beef -- meh it was alright! * clay pot rice -- delicious! but it felt like so little rice! Service was friendly but slow. Not sure if it was because they needed more servers

Yelp
one of my go to spots in chinatown. Consistently good and budget friendly cha chaan teng. Clay pot, congee and hk style milk tea are all fantastic. I'm happy with whatever I order here, but I generally recommend sticking to hk style dishes, as it's what they do best. Great service and a fantastic spot to spend any morning or lunch.

Yelp
This place was awesome! At first we weren't sure if we needed to wait to be seated, but we went ahead and waited by the door. The place was packed. We got sat at a roomy table. It took a few minutes for our server to come over, but I wont dock them for that as it could just be that we're just impatient east coasters. The food was excellent and comes out pretty quickly. It does come out as it's ready though - so I got the Singapore noodles well before my husband got his fried rice. The egg rolls were mind blowing. So good! I loved the Singapore noodle as well. My husbands fried rice was a little bland, but he still liked it. The strawberry matcha was refreshing and a great pick-me-up!

Yelp
Big portion with delicious taste! Really authentic comfort food taste and absolutely stunning flavor. The waitresses are always busy but they are efficient. Since it's a neighborhood restaurant, it's on a noisy side. The TVs are on and people come and go during busy hours can be a bit distracting for a nice lunch. Would recommend if you are looking for something casual and quick!

Yelp
Food was so yummy! I loved the tofu and fish fillet dish. The restaurant has great, down to earth vibes. It is a great place to eat with friends and family. Service is fast and staff there are super helpful. I highly recommend this place to others! This will definitely be a go to spot for my partner and I.

Yelp
The food here is good and authentic, they have daily deals too on the wall in chinese and the meals comes with a free drink. I used google translate to understand what it is saying. The service is how you would expect any restaurant in chinatown to be like. It is pretty packed during lunch times.

Yelp
Parking was complicated; we had two-ton noodle soups, string beans, and pork chop fried rice. The soup and beans were excellent, but I would not order the pork chop fried rice again--casual spot with Cantonese and English-speaking servers. I would return for the Wonton; they have all the sauces, too!

Yelp
I'm not sure if jook and French toast really go together as breakfast, but who am I to judge? It's like a nuclear arms deal between China and the U.S...you negotiate with each other with the best intentions, but then you're not responsible for the fallout...if you know what I mean. Anyway, this spot was an accidental find, quite popular with regulars, most of them seniors. Beyond American and Chinese breakfast options, there were several carb-friendly categories like spaghetti rice plates, macaroni, and fried rice noodle chow fun (...I think this last category was a smash-up of anything else they can put in a wok). I was in the mood for jook, so I went with the $8.80 Seafood Porridge with Chinese Donut, only they forgot the Chinese donut. It was comfort food plain and simple, piping hot with shrimp, squid, and chunks of cod lurking underneath the milky surface (photo: https://bit.ly/3JdwcN4). What better accompaniment could there be than the $8.80 French Toast? I wasn't expecting a Denny's Grand Slam special, but it was a bit spartan, two slices of bread fried in an egg wash and accompanied by a sweet syrup that wasn't quite maple (photo: https://bit.ly/3msRMod). With the $1.99 Coffee, that was enough. FOOD - 4 stars...odd combo of dishes that worked for my meager breakfast needs AMBIANCE - 3.5 stars...a plain dining space filled with people who knew each other well SERVICE - 3.5 stars...pretty much a diner customer TOTAL - 4 stars...casual enough to combine incompatible plates into a meal RELATED - Exploring Chinatown?
