NYC Restaurant Closings, April 2023 - Eater NY

"Carroll Gardens: G. Esposito & Sons Jersey Pork Store closes this month after a century on Court Street. The legendary butcher, one of the oldest still standing in Brooklyn, broke the news to customers in March in a sign posted on the front of the building. Employees at the shop declined to comment on the reason for the closure and messages to G. Esposito & Sons went unanswered. It closed on April 10." - Luke Fortney

After 100 Years, Brooklyn’s G. Esposito & Sons Pork Store Is Closing - Eater NY

"G. Esposito & Sons Jersey Pork Store, a butcher shop in Carroll Gardens, is closing after 100 years in business. A sign posted to the Court Street shop’s store states that April 10 is the last day for one of Brooklyn’s oldest butchers. G. Esposito & Sons opened in Carroll Gardens a century ago, originally on Columbia Street, after the founder moved to New York by way of Naples, Italy in 1922. It later relocated to its current home at 357 Court Street, near President Street. In 2010, the New York Times reported that when the pork store first opened decades back, it sourced its meat from Jersey farms, “which had the best cuts,” calling it a “meat store grandma would love.” For a long time, the sandwich shop, which hand-butchered its meats, did not even have a list of options, though that has since changed at the cash-only venture. Over the years, they supplied products to restaurants, like Buttermilk Channel, as well as home cooks. Eater visited the shop and employees confirmed it was closing but did not specify the reason. Eater has reached out for more information. “I have no idea how people can pay rent here,” John Esposito told Crain’s New York Business in 2012. Esposito, the grandson of the founder, was the third generation to run the business, alongside his brother George. “I’ve had both hips replaced, and my brother might need a new knee at some point,” John Esposito said. “I’m on my feet 12 hours a day. I’ve never had a Saturday off.” In 2019, George Esposito told Bkylner that the business was in decline: “The future, unfortunately, is coming to an end.” He added that, “We are getting older. We’re here 100 years. Didn’t push our kids to take over the business, because the way the business is headed.” Carroll Gardens's old-school Italian spots have taken other hits as of late. Earlier this month, longtime locals of the neighborhood mourned the loss of slice shop Sal’s, just down the street from G. Esposito & Sons. “The secret to a business lasting nearly a hundred years is love. Love what you’re doing and put your heart and soul into it,” George Esposito said in a documentary about the shop. “That’s pretty much the secret.”" - Emma Orlow

I’m not much of a sandwich person, so I never really paid attention to this place, even though I love Pasticceria Monteleoni right next door. But I needed sandwiches for a picnic one day and ordered three kinds here. All were fantastic, but let me single out the Italian hero. It’s a sandwich I’ve never been into, because I can find deli meats mind of gross. Not these ones in this sandwich. They make this to perfection. There’s such a balance of flavors and a high quality in every single ingredient that it adds up to something I actually really liked.

One word: PHENOMENAL. The BEST Italian sandwich I've ever had. I'm from CA and EVERY TIME I go to N.Y., I always carve out time to go to G Esposito & Sons. The owner (papa) & son, are such a great guys: so nice, friendly, helpful, and hilarious. I came into NY this last weekend for only one day and, of course, I called in the day prior to pre-order 5 prosciutto breads and they had them fresh and ready for me right when I arrived. I even got 2 sandwiches for the road! Anything & everything they offer, You will not be disappointed, I promise. HIGHLY recommend. A++++

The owners (George and John) are amazing. As knowledgeable as they are nice. They really care about their product. I’ve never been disappointed. I once mentioned that my mom likes hot Italian sausages but theirs are a little too hot. They said call a day ahead and we’ll make a batch of medium... you gotta love that!

Very good creations. Wish they offered them as pressed paninis. Picture of their latest prices.

The real deal. The best sandwich in Brooklyn. The owner, George, is an incredibly nice man who runs a phenomenal, authentic establishment. I visited twice in 48 hours and can’t wait to come back.

Wanted the #5 Sandwich with grilled chicken. They said they can do BREADED chicken instead. I said OK why not. They have the BREADED chicken already sitting in a box and they just reheat it. I'm guessing because GRILLED chicken would involve them actually grilling it fresh and they wanted to get rid of the older breaded chicken instead. Sandwich was OK. Chicken felt dry. Bread felt old. Overpriced. Might go back and try their other sandwiches, might not. Overhyped.

Old school butchers are disappearing sadly, and I just love that store. They know what they are talking about. You can call in advanced for special order, they are always so nice and easy to deal with. Old school, traditional and timeless, to the point that my wife loves going there just to feel part of something special. This is my go to for any kind of meats and I just love going there to get things I need for a good meal. We need to support that kind of stores. Thanks for all the hard work and for being always there when we need.

The lard bread (3 loaves) have doubled in price and the presuitto was not crisped from baking, cheese bland, not spiced enough and undercooked dough. I am so disappointed to bring these to holiday dinners 😔. Spent $153, I really hope the other items purchased are up to quality.
