"Pittsburgh has plenty of old-school diners, yet Gab & Eat stands out. Owners Sue Smith and Karie Goedert manage the 41-year-old eatery with a welcoming, no-nonsense staff who cater to regulars and newcomers at the 14-seat counter or 12 booths in the rectangular space within a shopping plaza just outside the city limits. Enjoy a mug of robust coffee alongside fluffy pancakes, heaps of home fries, crispy bacon, and eggs cooked to your preference. Gab & Eat’s flattop chefs were smashing burgers long before it became trendy; the never-frozen beef patties, topped with razor-thin onions and traditional garnishes, rank among Pittsburgh’s finest." - Melissa McCart, Hal B. Gab & Eat GOOD: Wonderful local, Carnegie business. A fun diner vibe with amazing breakfast, vibrant staff and fair prices BAD: Nothing much, they close early (230ish) and pot coffee is on the expense side (2.99) But they do grind their beans and I enjoyed a cup to go. Gab & Eat is right up my alley. I love diners, especially quirky places with top notch breakfast. Gab & Eat is all that and more. The staff clearly enjoys their jobs and the locals. If you sit at the counter you get to watch the skilled cooking action. As a Carnegie visitor, I went 2x - a tell right there. Day one was a great omelet, day 2 a superb bagel sandwich. My servers were great and friendly. If you're in the neighborhood, starting your day here is a wise move.

Been eating here since 2010. Great grilled food..... breakfast and lunch only. Unique daily hours and op tempo. Can be a long line to get a seat on the weekends. Used the bathroom for the first time on this visit, and man! It needs a deep clean.

Google
Stopped in for breakfast on a Saturday. Lively restaurant with tons of regular customers. Friendly staff. Huge portions of great homemade food. Pictured is a 1/2 portion mixed grill. Yes, 1/2 portion. Hot and sweet sausage with eggs, potatoes, peppers and onions. Closed Sunday and Monday.

The Grub Guys

You cannot go wrong w Gab & Eat. This place excels at every aspect on the breakfast menu. The sandwich was perfect and the mixed grill was delicious too. Even their pancakes are very good for being just plain. Highly recommend this place!

Google
The diner experience whatever you want and it's all good. I had a fried bologna an egg omelette also known as jumbo. My friend standard bacon and eggs breakfast but everything was good. Parking in the lot out front

Google
Dirty. Bathrooms in kitchen area and smells like musty basement. Waitress asked if we needed anything, then walked away before we could even answer. Waitress just kept the change without asking if we wanted change back. Staff in pajamas. Unprofessional and this is being generous.

Sarah Kuck

Google
Went with my grandma. She got the tuna melt, I got a cheeseburger, and we split a half order of fries. All portions were gigantic. Cozy hometown atmosphere. Great service.

Google
Fantastic. Don't be in a rush, just drink a pot of coffee and soak in the vibe. #1 reason to visit Pittsburgh. Always good - but make sure to opt for Italian Bread.

Yelp
My friend and I went to this place as I was visiting her in Pittsburgh. The first thing I noticed when I walked in was how small and congested it was. We were placed in a booth in the very back of the establishment. Everyone who had to go to the bathroom walked by our table. (Very close.) We each watched as people were seated and served as we waited and waited and waited. We were frequently asked if we wanted drink refills while waiting. We were finally served almost 45 minutes or more after being seated. It seemed like a long wait for some scrambled eggs, potatoes and toast. There didn't seem to be so many people there to warrant the wait either. (It was a Saturday so maybe they were busier than usual.) I ordered a "mixed grill" with side of raisin toast. The food was hot and tasted pretty good.

Yelp
THE place for breakfast in Pittsburgh! Cash only- bring your folding money!!! I ordered the cheese omelette. The AC is blasting. Ahhhhh!

Lauren G.

Yelp
Their website says "like Cheers without the alcohol" and that is exactly how I felt when I sat down at the counter. The waitstaff knew all the morning regulars and their menu is beautiful in its simplicity. It is an older-style diner atmosphere the walls practically covered in art, stickers, posters, plaques, you name it. You'll feel at home here!

Angie S.

Yelp
I don't get here often enough. I was treated by a pleasant waitress that told me to sit wherever I wanted. I was waited on promptly & my food was delivered piping hot. Bacon wasn't much of a flavor but I loved it all. For the cost to oh so get a lot of food. I never seen my waitress again until she dropped the check. I did need more tea for awhile but another waitress noticed & got me refilled. As a single diner I felt comfortable too.

Yelp
We were in the area so I thought we'd swing by for some local color. It was packed and a little dingy but we figured why not? The place is a small narrow room. The servers all seemed nice and came right away to get our drink and food orders. But..... good lord- it took 40 mins to get our food!! During this time there was a guy in PJ pants limping back and forth from the dishwashing room/ pantry bringing dishes/ bread etc and hauling dirty dishes back in a nasty tub. There was barely enough room for him to get by the servers and booths. He would go up and down cussing and grumbling. The servers were eating donuts and coffee in between serving. The whole arrangement just didn't look very clean. We finally got our food, and it was ok- not awful. They have these big homemade sausage patties which i thought were pretty good. Anyway- we got done and didn't get sick. It was an experience- probably one we won't repeat.

Yelp
My mom gets very excited when she has a restaurant recommendation based on something she heard on Pittsburgh Today Live. Yesterday's lunch rec is thanks to Celina Pompeani, and it's a BIG thank you. Gab & Eat doesn't look like much from the outside, but as soon as I stepped inside, I could tell the food was going to be good. Nothing fancy here, but kind service, quick food, and a cheap bill. I ordered the Poor Boy - a steak/cheese/egg sandwich with the freshest lettuce I've seen in a restaurant. Mumsie ordered the Hot Italian (no comment) and she was equally enamored. We shared an order of onion rings -- the best onion rings I think I've EVER had (hot tip - order the half size. The whole size is CRAZY big), and left with a $26 bill, including tip. Gab & Eat is only open for breakfast/lunch, so do yourself a favor and work it into your workday. You can thank me (and Celina) later.

Yelp
Was in the area and was in the mood for breakfast. Gab & Eat was highly recommended on Yelp. I decide to give it a shot. The staff where super friendly and very nice and super efficient. I ordered 2 eggs over easy, bacon & home fries and white toast. The eggs where a bit runny ad the bacon not cooked enough and the toast had way too much butter on it. Although the food was just ok the service was outstanding. The waitress was super efficient asked how meal was obviously I lied. Also she stayed on top of each person she was taking care of. That is definitely one of the key things that I review when eating somewhere is the service. The food did taste ok but normally i would give it 2-3 stars the service was definitely 5 stars all the way. It was tough decision but give them 4 stars overall and if in the area I would go again.

Yelp
I stopped in for breakfast on a weekday, around 7AM and they were moderately busy. It's the typical diner style joint in a plaza here in the Pittsburgh area. They offer great service (with a smile), keep your coffee topped off, and they have all the usual suspects on their breakfast menu. Their bacon, egg and cheese bagel was excellent! I got it with tomato and it came out perfect, with a large slab of egg on it and perfectly cooked bacon. Their breakfast potatoes are just OK, they need to be seasoned to make them taste decent. I'd definitely return for breakfast!

Jennifer N.

Yelp
Looked at several Yelp reviews for breakfast and luckily stumbled upon this place. It is located on a strip mall. Plenty of parking available. Staff was friendly, service was quick, and you get bang for your buck! I got the bacon, egg, and cheese on a toasted bagel with a side of home fries! My husband ordered the homemade hot sausage with toast and two eggs. We both enjoyed our breakfast. Lunch is also available here.

Michael T.

Yelp
recommend: eggs, mixed grill, waffles, raison toast, mixed mugs of fresh coffee. love the galley booths leading through trivia flanked friendly open kitchen.

Karen S.

Yelp
The staff are totally miserable. Waitress could not have been more rude.I'll never go back. My money spends anywhere

Isabella C.

Yelp
the food was amazing, great prices, great tastes and generous staff!! highly recommend for a great time!!

Bernadette D.

Yelp
I decided today this is my number 1 breakfast spot in Pittsburgh. I've been to a lot in and around Pittsburgh area so I've done my homewor. today I sat at the counter and watched the flow of all the cooks work together in harmony and they were so busy but not one second of stress or overwhelming showed on any of them. Every employee was friendly, everyone! so great to see. what a great start to a day! one side note is if you're on a diet you may not like this. otherwise it's awesome!

Steven P.

Yelp
No frills breakfast with incredible flavor. Small restaurant but the staff is very friendly and the food tastes like grandma made it. This was my first time, so I ordered two meals to give it a try.. incredible taste

Susan H.

Yelp
Food was perfect. Had a ham and cheese omlet with Mancini toast . Yum! Tasted the waffle and it was crisp and delicious.

Ken L.

Yelp
Very popular and crowded greasy spoon joint that has been around for a long time. Nothing much to complain about here as they have solid breakfast with just a time or I had some undercooked potatoes (home fries) but not a big deal. It is a seat yourself style unless someone is waiting. I normally order the steak and eggs and it is satisfactory for the price. Bacon is thick, english muffin buttery, eggs cooked to order. Service is speedy and efficient.

Jessica L.

Yelp
Friendly staff and pretty good food. We were told we could seat ourselves, we sat down and soon we were greeted and offered waters. The table itself had different local companies - giving a true mom and pop ambiance. Even though the bacon tasted like the grill needs to be cleaned and I personally didn't care for the potatoes, the homemade sausage was great, the eggs were alright and the toast was perfect! I will be honest, I'm picky but my friend ate every bite!

Katie R.

Yelp
We loved this place! Coffee was amazing. Great service; we were in and out in 45 minutes on a weekday morning. I like the open kitchen where you can see them cook. The mushroom and Swiss omelette was great. I would gave preferred fresh mushrooms vs canned though. Home fries were on point! You can tell they get a lot of regular customers. Highly recommend!!

Yelp
We had the misfortune to arrive at 12:43 today (a Saturday). We saw the hours on the door but no "closed" sign so we were hoping we could still be seated and have something to eat. The lady in the front said "go ahead, have a seat, you'll be the last ones", and a gentleman put the closed sign on the door. We walked back to an empty booth, only to be met by a waitress who made an angry disgusted face at us and greeted us with "We're closing in one minute" and proceeded to wipe down the seats so they would be nice and wet if we sat down. My husband said that they told us in the front that we could stay, but when he realized how offended I was, we just turned around and walked out in spite of the the waitress telling us we could stay (but she didn't apologize). WTF? They could have just told us they had forgotten to put up the closed sign and we'd have just tried to get there earlier another time. There was no need to be that rude; like, do you realize you're in the HOSPITALITY industry?! We went elsewhere, spent nearly $40 for a lovely meal, and left a 25% tip for our pleasant and competent server. We will not be trying Gab 'n' Eat again, which is sad as the food looked and smelled delicious. BTW, we were clean and well dressed and I was carrying a designer bag and had multiple diamond rings on, so it wasn't that we looked cheap or like poor tippers, as you only have one chance to make a first impression. Gab'n'Eat blew theirs..

Susan M.

Yelp
Stopped by for lunch, had a grilled carved ham sandwich with onion rings. The ham was better than I anticipated. Onion rings were good. My daughter had A Cajun burger that she says was very good. Service was great. Highly recommend !!!

Al B.

Yelp
Always great food mostly very good service and the ambience, well come on it's a small very clean diner, which I frequent regularly.

Frank A.

Yelp
Great local hole in the wall spot for breakfast and brunch. Have been enjoying this place for almost 20 years....it is a GEM. Weekends and lunchtimes are very busy. Take out us a great option that I use often. Enjoy!!!!

Derek P.

Yelp
Perfect breakfast stop with that home sweet home small town vibe. Food is tasty and at a reasonably inexpensive price. One of my fave bfast places anywhere in Pgh. Highly recommended. It's a crammed narrow restaurant so either be prepared to wait or become buddies with someone.

Deb M.

Yelp
The food used to be really good but the last time I was there not so much. The vegetables in the scrambler were raw.

Jack C.

Yelp
My first trip to Pittsburgh to visit a good friend. He took me here to get a feel for the community and it was awesome. We ate breakfast here two days in a row the food was great, service spectacular and it was great watching people interact like the Cheers bar. Note this is not frilly food this is salt of the earth cooking.

Jordan D.

Yelp
This local joint has a full menu, but we went on a Friday around 1pm for a late brunch. It's a seat-yourself super casual and friendly place. I got a mushroom & cheese omelet with Italian bread. It was not what I was expecting at all - basically an egg taco filled with what looked like a mountain of canned mushrooms. It was actually pretty hilarious! The toast was so so so good though: grilled and buttery! Also - even the half portion of the mixed grille was HUUUGE! And if you decide to get onion be prepared for what appeared to be an entire spiralized cooked onion thrown in the middle. Good prices, big portions, I wouldn't get the omelet again but I'd go back!

The Grub G.

Yelp
You cannot go wrong w Gab & Eat. This place excels at every aspect on the breakfast menu. The sandwich was perfect and the mixed grill was delicious too. Even their pancakes are very good for being just plain. Highly recommend this place!

Kayla S.

Yelp
Wonderful food and friendly service at a great price. Truly what you think of when you think of a diner. The food is great but the space is small, be prepared to wait if you get there a bit "late" for breakfast.

Blaise P.

Yelp
I was excited to try this spot! Everyone builds so much hype on it. I didn't know what to expect so on entering you seat your self and I was greeted. On the right side there's pictures of friends and family's dining and I thought that was cool. The left side had cool trivia questions so it's fun to quiz each other at the table. For the food I ordered two eggs poached and they where cooked wonderfully. I got the homemade sausage one spicy and one regular to try both and I was impressed with how much flavor they had. Not to much spice and very balanced I put maple syrup on them and it was so mouth watering. I got Italian toast for the bread and was not impressed very thick slices and the crust was super hard but the center was soft. As for the French toast it didn't taste like it was cooked all the way and had Aton of butter on it and just like the toast the crust was super hard. Overall I'll definitely come back to try it one more time but I'm not as impressed as I was hoping for. The staff here is wonderful and made sure she checked in a few times. One big thing that I liked was the tables are pre set and the waiter makes sure to put down 2/3 napkins so there already available as needed.

Ashley N.

Yelp
Went on a Friday late morning around 11am. Full mixed grill was huge -- they don't actually mix it just throw it all on a plate. Waited quite a while for the food.

Russell D.

Yelp
It looks like a hole in the wall but almost every time we go there there's a line to get in they serve a great breakfast great hamburgers and old-school pittsburgh style diner atmosphere a fun place to grab some good food I recommend it

Patrick P.

Yelp
Yum - freaking - me! As the other fellower yelpers mentioned - this place is a cash only. A couple of recommendations: - Don't eat early in the week - I don't recommend wearing any tight clothing (no skinny jeans) - you will not be skinny when you leave I walked in for breakfast one early weekday AM. The place was packed with locals and regulars. A very good sign. My co-worker recommended I get the mixed grill. I ordered the large mix grill. My waitress tried to warn me - it is large (very large). I ended up eating the left-overs for the next 2 days. Food - The Mixed Grill comprises their homemade sausage, grilled onions, grilled peppers, potatoes, fried eggs. Portion - This should have been a man vs food episode. I was not going to attempt to eat all the food. It was really good. Service - My waitress looks as if she had been working there for years. She was fast, friendly, and offered good advice. Price - The cost ranges $5 - 10. I will definitely go back after I buy some new stretchy pants.

Amanda R.

Yelp
Worth the wait! Do not be afraid of a line outside on a Saturday morning. It will move fast! This place is Not just a meal but an experience. It's so fun to watch the speed and hustle of the food being prepared on the grill. The restaraunt is no frills with mismatch plates and coffee cups but oh my is the food delicious. The breakfast sandwich with hot sausage is hands down the best I've had in the city. The potatoes with peppers and onions are huge and satisfying. The pancakes are thick and fluffy. Ample parking in a parking lot of a shopping center and easy to access from the parkway!

Jurnee T.

Yelp
I would normally give this place a 5/5 however, we traveled with all of our family (6cars full) of hungry individuals after I made them travel an extra 1.5 hrs after a sporting event for this amazing spot for breakfast. Just to find out they are closed on Sunday & Monday. This was not listed on their website. Very disappointing but a must to eat when you are around the area!

Henry W.

Yelp
Fantastic place. So much better than any chain restaurant. 25 years ago, I lived in the area and ate there 3-4 times a week. I don't get back there very often, but when I do, I make that a priority stop. The place hasn't changed in 25 years. They have the world's best hot sausage. This type of restaurant is a part of Americana. I recommend it highly.

Erik H.

Yelp
Gab & Eat...two things I am very proficient at. Having been told how great Gab & Eat was by my better half we went and checked it out this weekend. It's in a little strip mall next to a Barber Shop in Carnegie. Barber Shop's and a greasy spoon. Say no more! The restaurant is long and narrow inside and there is a bar which you can sit at and watch the cooks produce their goods, and goods they are. We had to wait a few minutes for a seat to open and we sat ourselves promptly. Our server took our order for beverages while we checked out the menu. I had coffee as did she. Their coffee is a bit on the weak side, so if you're expecting a pick me up, look elsewhere. It's diner coffee. I chose to have two eggs over medium, home fries, sausage patties(one of each, hot and sweet) and Italian toast. The toast was easily 1-1/2" thick. Evidently the sausage is made specifically for Gab & Eat from what I gather. It's good. In fact it's probably some of the best breakfast sausage I'd ever ate in a restaurant. The seasoning was perfect. My eggs were a hair underdone for over medium, but they were still very good. The home-fries were both soft and crispy at the same time. They were fantastic. I also ordered two pancakes. Being as I'd never been I figured I'd better try them, you know, for science sake. They were good. Nice and fluffy, good flavor and not burnt. Definitely should've just ordered one. She had the 1/2 Mixed Grill add mushrooms and half of a Belgian waffle. She loved it. The Belgian waffle remained crispy even after applying the necessary maple syrup. Gab & Eat is everything that I like. It's been there for a long time. It's a very local place. It has a history. It's not a fly by night diner or an experimental breakfast joint. What they make stands the test of time and it's just plain good.

Greg G.

Yelp
First time eating there All I can say is the food was great and the service was outstanding me and my family always love going to Diner's and this one I like a lot very good food and Service thanks a lot folks for making me feel comfortable and full

Nancy M.

Yelp
Great little place for a quick breakfast! Friendly, helpful staff, quick service, and yummy breakfast!! We will definitely visit again soon!!

Amy M.

Yelp
Sometimes you just don't need a fancy shmancy over-priced frilly frittata-ed brunch to get the job done. Sometimes you just want a greasy spoon diner that knows how to fry up some good breakfast. I love this place. The booths are falling apart, the waitresses aren't overly nice, and it's chaotic. But I can design my perfect breakfast because they serve half waffles and single French toasts! I hate having to choose between sweet and savory breakfast and, at Gab & Eat, you don't have to. Everything I've eaten here has been very good. Waffles = gooood. Sausage Patties= gooood. Mixed grill = gooooood. Pepper, onion, sausage, cheese, and potato omelet = so so so good. You really can't go wrong here. It's a great place for cheap eats!

Rob K.

Yelp
I've eaten at the Gab and Eat multiple times over the course of the last 15 years. If you are looking for high end, you are in the wrong place. This is a solid coffee shop that is cash only. My go to is the two eggs over medium with sausage, Italian toast and a half order of home fries. Depending on what time I have that. I usually don't eat again until dinner. Waitress are solid, food is always above average. Highly recommend. You won't go away hungry.

Kathleen L.

Yelp
Fun place to have breakfast! Excellent French Toast! The waitress's are fabulous also!

Arlene M.

Yelp
I stopped in here due to a change in luncheon plans. Upon arrival the wait to be seated was horrific! Someone pointed to an empty counter stool so I sat there. I perused the menu fairly quick and decided to order half portions. I hadn't had a waffle in ages and I love home fries. Since they both came in half portions I went with those. My waitress made sure I always had a fresh cup of hot tea since I was sitting near the entrance. It seemed like a long production line to wait for your order but it did not disappoint. When I got my half orders I was overwhelmed at the size! The waffle was thick and fluffy and the home fries which bore a resemblance to hash browns were hot and greasy. Ketchup is on the counter as well as syrup. Yes they use real butter here since I could observe one of the chefs using a giant slab of it in preparation of orders. I definitely plan to revisit this place when I have more time to try different things. My advice would be to prepare to take home a doggy bag since they give huge portions even if they are half size. The best part is that prices here are very reasonable and you can get a lot of food for what you order. Gab and Eat is located in a small strip mall just on the cusp of the entrance to Carnegie. It is easy to miss if you are looking for a particular building.

Flora M.

Yelp
This place gets 5 stars for the Italian toast. If it wouldn't be weird to just walk in and order a plate of Italian toast I would totally do it. Instead I typically get Italian toast with a side of omelette ;). Seriously though, I've only had omelettes and they aren't bad. Straightforward. I think my favorite is just a simple cheese omelette. I'd skip the mushrooms though as they are canned. I think canned mushrooms taste gross. Once I just got peppers and onions which started off tasty but I think they just put too much. The place itself is nothing special to look at. I like the diner seating style, it's kind of nostalgic. My OCD tendencies make me slightly bothered by the hodge podge of mismatching mugs. But it gives the place character! Anyway, back to the bread. It's heavenly. And they are generous. Sometimes I day dream about the bread. My husband thinks I'm crazy. I think he's just jealous :)

Karen L.

Yelp
Great small diner. Friendly staff. Had the mixed grill which was amazing. Great experience just allow time. Small grill where they cook so if it is busy may take a little time. Will definitely be back.

Ralph H.

Yelp
Simple. You will always have a happy belly. It's a bit tight in the building but who cares with the deliciousness. The place is always packed so that says it all.

Bill L.

Yelp
Excellent food and service. Super friendly wait staff. Been going here 5 plus years on Saturday, never disappointed. Homemade sausage is great along with the burgers!

Mr. M.

Yelp
Very nice greasy spoon diner for when you're in the mood for large French Toast, pancakes, omelets. Gets a little busy and is cash only, fyi. Worth the trip for Americana.

Margaret D.

Yelp
bro i literally made this yelp account just to review this place n give it 5 stars gab n eat rules . exactly the kind of diner i love . chefs fuckin kiss

Jesse T.

Yelp
This place is as Legit diner breakfast as you can get. Everything on the menu is top notch. I would highly recommend trying both the Sweet and the Hot homemade sausage. I haven't been here for lunch yet, but I've heard really good things about their burgers and sandwiches. The service is prompt, kind, and to the point. Gab & Eat has replaced my local breakfast joint, Eggs R Us, and I would put it up against any other diner in the Burgh. If you are a, most important meal of the day, warrior, then you have to check this place out. You won't be disappointed... Unless you like designer lattes and egg white frittatas... Then Gab & Eat might not be your jam...
