The 20 Best Spots In Northeast Philly

"Gaeta’s is where you can get classic Italian dishes like stromboli and pizza all made in a brick oven. But it’s their pillowy tomato pie that people keep lining up for. It comes in squares of six, 12, and 24 slices—which is perfect for when you're tailgating an Eagles party or hosting your cousin’s baby shower. You can get it topped with cheese, spinach, peppers, and more. No matter which way you go, you’ll eat something that makes you want to burst into song." - candis mclean

9 Restaurants That Could Only Exist In Philly

"Thanks to a wave of Italian immigrants in the late 1800s and early 1900s, this city is committed to cold, saucy tomato pie. It would be reasonable to eat this thick dough cushion for breakfast, lunch, snack, and dinner, especially if you're going to Gaeta’s in the Northeast. The family-run shop makes slices that have textbook char from a brick oven and taste just a little sweet. Pies come with either six, 12, or 24 slices—also known as the perfect accessory for tailgating or sitting on the steps of a rowhome that isn't yours." - candis mclean

The Best Tomato Pies In Philly, Ranked

"Gaeta’s deep tomato pies come with either six, 12, or 24 slices. The Northeast bakery makes a few different varieties, like versions topped with cheese, spinach, peppers, and more. But go with the classic, and you’ll eat something that’s as good as watching the Birds score. Almost." - candis mclean

An Illustrated Guide to Philly’s 8 Essential Vegan Dishes - Eater Philly

"Tomato pie is often tricky for vegans since cheese is included in many traditional recipes. Thankfully, Gaeta’s tomato pie can easily be made vegan if you order ahead of time and ask for no cheese on top. Gaeta’s tomato sauce is sweet, savory, and covers crisp dough from edge to edge. Pick up one of Gaeta’s tomato pies for a must have classic Italian treat in Northeast Philly." - Fabiola Lara

Phenomenal. Got the roast pork sandwich (only made on the weekends) and the tomato pie. The best roast pork I’ve had in the entire city (potentially one of the best sandwiches I’ve had in all of Philly). Seeded rolls are fantastic and are a must. Authentically Philly vibes and really friendly staff. If you are even remotely in the area you should 1000% come here.

I decided to go try this place strictly off the reviews. I never grabbed my phone so fast to write one. I will always try a place no matter the reviews unless it’s something ridiculous, and seeing all these positive reviews I know why I don’t trust any review across all platforms. I ordered half sheet of their most popular square tomato pie. I hate saying this about food, but it was disgusting. The dough was hard like a rock not because it’s made to be crispy, but because whoever is making the dough probaly worked for Elios at some point in their career. That’s what this pizza reminded me of minus the cheese. No air in the dough what’s so ever. Dough can be airy and crispy, and neither does it need to be really thick for it to become airy. The sauce the most disgusting part reminded of Bonta premade pizza sauce. It all went in the garbage. If you are pizza connoisseur stay as far away from this place. If you like frozen elios, dominos, or papa johns then you’ll love this place.

I grew up in Newark New Jersey a long time ago and predominantly Italian in neighborhood. There was so many pizzerias and you all had your choice of pizza or tomato pie and I always love tomato pie but now where I live it's very hard to get. I saw this Gaeta's tomato pie in the Suncrest deli in Wildwood and I took a couple of them and it's the best I've eaten since I was 10 years old. I loved them. I give them a five I'm gonna stop at the deli before I go home and buy whatever they have left

Google
Everything from Gaeta's is amazing. I've lived around the corner my whole life and always enjoyed the food and people. I had the chance to try their cheesesteak today and it was delicious. I highly recommend trying their cheesesteak, along with all of the other great options on their menu.

Google
This is a gem of a pizza place. Been around for a century. Best of the best Square Tomato Pies, Round Pies, Stromboli's and all spectacular.

Ben Kranefeld

Google
Stopped into Gaeta's on my way home, after a day of trying different pizza joints. I bought a small, plain tomato pie (six squares, $8), then got talking to the friendly guy running the store for a while. He alone made it worth going back! There is no place to eat inside, so I took my pie back to my car parked on Castor Avenue and ate a few slices while standing there. The tomato pie squares (slices) were served warm. The sweet sauce was alive with tomato flavor and made it difficult to not eat more! There was no cheese on this particular version, but the combination of flavorful sauce and thin, crispy crust made it the perfect way to end a day! Definitely make it a point to give Gaeta's a try, and be sure to say Hi to the owner!

• Best Tomato Pies in Philly 🍅 • Very Good Regular Pies to 8.5 / 10 Only thing i could nitpick is i wish they were open a little bit later & not closed Monday/Tuesdays. 🤷‍♂️

Google
This place is legit! I ordered the tomato pie and it was delicious. I’ve been craving a good tomato pie and this is it. I’m from the NE Philly but often drive to center city because the food options around here are severely lacking. Great to know something this good is close by. My family is originally from South Philly and this is that old style tomato pie you want. VEGAN FOOD ALERT: tomato pie is vegan if you call and request no cheese. Being vegan, again options are lacking in NE, but this is a solid option.

Yelp
My wife and I were visiting Philly and on Memorial Day were searching for tomato pie. This place came highly recommended. SPECTACULAR tomato pie. As someone who grew up in NYC eating at old school Italian eateries ... I can attest this is the real deal. The owner couldn't have been friendlier. Next time in Philly, stopping here will be a no brainer. 100% recommended. Everything a bakery and business should be. 10000 stars.
google avatar

Dominicke S.

Yelp
This place was my wife's favorite as a child, it is now a household favorite. Food and service are always top notch. I've called in ahead and ordered when I got there. The staff have a way of making your wait less painful. Found out they do Strombolis and other options for tomato pie. I like taking these for My Fire station
google avatar

Dena L.

Yelp
GAETA'S is such a great shop. Their Buffalo Chicken Stromboli is the best in the city! I've tried others and they don't compare. They have samples for you to try. They are famous for their tomatoe pie, but everything I've tried is great!
google avatar

G M.

Yelp
No real Italian bakery would use CANNED tomatoes in the sauce. Gaeta's does, so they are not the real thing. Service is extremely slow, prices are high, and service is polite. The store is tiny and ancient. I had to rate them three stars because they are still far superior to the chains for taste, which is what really counts, whether it is the pizza or tomato pies. Parking is inconvenient and almost nonexistent. The neighborhood is decaying as lower class people continue to populate it. But again, for flavor you could do far worse.

Henry F.

Yelp
The tomato pie is amazing! The traditional pie is amazing! The stromboli - amazing! And if you need to wait, just go next door and grab a tasty slushie with alcohol. Love this place. I saw a review complaining about price, sorry if you are used to frozen pizza prices! The prices are in line with any other pizza place, and lower than some of the more arrogant pizza places in the area.

Patricia W.

Yelp
Great tomato pie. Timing may be tricky but it is worth the wait. The best tomato pie in Philly
google avatar

Artie K.

Yelp
We haven't been here in years since we moved but were in the area. One tomato pie and one white pie. Same friendly service as remembered from the nice ladies. The pies however did not live up to memory. The sauce on the tomato pie was overly sweet (the crust was as good as remembered) and the white pizza was nothing more than cheesy bread. No flavor. Oh well it seems nothing is as good as it used to be these days.
google avatar

Yelp
This is fantastic tomato pie and pizza! The gravy is amazing on both the pies and pizza with a hint of sweetness to it and the crust is done to perfection ~ crispy and thin. Gaeta's also does a wonderful white pizza with a touch of olive oil and tomatoes that is truly superb. This is a family staple ~ and something that is ordered for every occasion. The tomato pies make excellent appetizers ~ just double cut the slices! Friendly service, incredible food and so very accommodating...Gaeta's is exceptional.

Yelp
Called up and had a 40 min wait. Phone was ringing off the hook. That's a good thing! The man who answered was so patient and helpful for a first timer. Very simple menu. I went with a small half tomato pie half cheese. It looks simple but let me tell you it's quality stuff. Reminds me of old forge pizza from the Scranton area. Crispy, straight as an arrow slice/firm and thin .... sauce had rich thickness to it, lightly seasoned and not overly sweet, earthy and thick but not chunky. Purée is just right. The cheese addition really gives it another dimension of bitterness and salt to balance the sweetness of the sauce. Homerun to me. I've had better but this is outstanding tomato pie and was worth the ride. It was hard to drive back home without taking a bite.

Yelp
Delicious! Been a customer for 30+ years! Service is awesome ! My family has loved getting tomato pies from Gaeta's and every time we have one of their pies , it takes me back to when I was a little girl . My 5 siblings feel the same way. It reminds us all of our deceased parents.
google avatar

Yelp
I drive on Castor all the time and never realized this gem was hidden across the McDonald's. I depend of yelp to help me find good foods and the reviews do matter. I got the tomato pie with cheese and just to say it was the best around this area. You won't be disappointed.

Kathy S.

Yelp
The best tomato pie around, bar none. The price is reasonable for the amount of pie that they serve. The workers are extremely friendly.

Louise A.

Yelp
tomatoe pie is fantastic, sauce is very tasty. just get it you will be happy you did!

Yelp
Tomato pie may very well be my favorite food item on earth but the hoops one must jump through to secure this food of the gods usually keeps me away. But Gaeta's has eliminated so many hurdles and therefore drastically improved my quality of life. A simple phone call with a very pleasant employee secured me a delicious tomato pie within about 30 minutes. And I must say Gaeta's is my new fave. I used to be s Corropolese purist who occasionally settled for Nonna Ugo's, but it's all about the Gaeta's these days. The sauce was delicious, the crust was perfect, and the process was easy. I brought a tomato pie to a party and was a huge hit. I'm going to be a frequent customer here and highly recommend anyone who hasn't tried them yet to check it out.
google avatar

Brian L.

Yelp
Fantastic pizza - great combination of just enough sauce and just enough cheese. The crust was really crispy and this pizza is a real winner. By the way $10 for a 14 inch pizza is ridiculous.
google avatar

Eugene A.

Yelp
Home to one of the best authentic tomato pies in Philadelphia. A lot of others claim to offer a true tomato pie, but Gaeta's really delivers. You get a crust that is about 1/2" thick and crispy on the bottom with the most amazing tomato sauce on top- tangy and sweet and oh so thick. It's served room temperature as tomato pie was intended. A true religious experience! As you walk through the door, the smell alone will have you salivating. So, so good! Give them a try. You will not be disappointed.

Yelp
Into the arms of the gods! This little pizza joint, ensconced thoroughly in Northeast Philadelphia is a gem, a pearl in the jewelry of the goddess of good food. The tomato pie here is some thing of both reality and legend. I have been eating this tomato pie for the past 30 years and has never been better. It is always remarkable! If you are a "foodie", if you enjoy amazing food with a destination, if you think you know your shit: than this is the place to go. Frankly, a real food lover will not be turned off by the façade, but in lightened almost to a Tibetan monk fashion by the taste of this amazingly good pie. Snuggled where it is always been, nestled deep against the breast of Northeast Philly is this amazing little restaurant, specializing in tomato pie. You, gentle readers are a fool for never having gone here. You need to make a special pilgrimage, possibly on knees, pleading to have more of the wonderfulness that is Gaeta's. More than just a date night, more than an evening with friends, this is an experience. Enjoy
google avatar

Toy G.

Yelp
Gaeta has been a staple for as long as I remember in the northeast. Never tried it up until recently, and sure enough I hate myself for not doing so. Great pies. Excellent flavor and super fresh dough. Bright notes in the sauce. I Loved them both. Hard to pick a favorite between the two, so I will just keep getting both.....

Yelp
Another northeast Philly treasure Large pie with cheese can't go wrong Take it to friends and they will always love you

Yelp
Stopped there tonight for takeout--first time. The food was amazing and the staff were incredibly nice--excellent customer service. Can't recommend this place enough. We will be back!

Yelp
Located on Castor Ave in Northeast Philly, this little bakery is a Goliath in The Who-has-the-best-tomato-pie-discussion. Before I arrived in Philly, I don't recall that tomato pies were even a THING where I came from in NJ. It wasn't until I lived in the city of brotherly shove a number of years that the tomato pie phenomenon got my attention. My first love will always be a cheese pizza but there is something to be said for a great tomato pie. My go to tomato pie isn't even found in the city limits. For years, Corropolese in Norristown has been my favorite. Lately we've been enjoying Carlinos in West Chester. It's the first tomato pie my lady has ever loved. My friend has been a raving fan of Geatas in the northeast. A trip to my accountant for my annual tax session brought me too close to pass up a sample of a Gaetas. The first thing you need to be aware of is this is a CASH ONLY business. Good thing I had enough to get a medium. When I got it home we tried it and REALLY liked it. The crust was outstanding. Not too thick. Crispy and just right. The tomatoes were a perfect combination of the best of both of those tomato pies mentioned above. Not heavy in tomatoes but not all paste. Just right. Seasoned with herbs that made it delicious. My lady loved it as well! I can see why it's won so many awards through the years. This version is outstanding.
google avatar

Khoa N.

Yelp
Great tomato pie. Even better the next day! Their pies can also be found at some other shops, such as, Creekside Co-op and Dattilo's Delicatessen. Tried their oreganato hot bread and traditional round pizza for a change. The bread was pretty much a Stromboli with just some oil and seasoning rolled inside. It's pretty dry and needed to be dipped in marinara sauce. The round pie is similar to the tomato, but is thinner and has a swirl of cheesy, saucy goodness. I'll probably give the white a try next time.
google avatar

Maryann F.

Yelp
A small little bakery that make delicious pizza and tomato pie! I found that calling in my order for pickup is easiest as they get pretty busy for lunch. The crust is thin and the sauce isn't too sweet. I really enjoy eating it cold the next day. Yum!
google avatar

Jules C.

Yelp
Definitely the best tomato pie I have had in Philadelphia! I wanted to go here after reading another review comparing it to Old Forge style pizza, I don't really agree with that comparison other than they are both rectangular, but it's a solid slice. This is a very non assuming storefront on Castor Ave that you can definitely pass by without seeing if you aren't paying attention. The service is friendly and currently takeout only (maybe delivery also but I am definitely out of delivery radius). The pizza was piping hot, the sauce was perfectly seasoned and the crust was perfect.
google avatar

Rich B.

Yelp
Absolutely the best tomato pie! I've been a fan since the mid 70's when they were Scaleas in Germantown. Back then a whole pie (24 slices) was $4.50. Damn I'm getting old! The taste and quality are exactly the same. Treat yourself.
google avatar

Miro K.

Yelp
One of the best tomato pies from nondescript bakery in NE Philly. If you're a pizza lover, get some
google avatar

Pattie M.

Yelp
GREAT tomato pie! My family has been on the hunt for a fabulous pie since our old place closed down. It's been nothing but disappointment until we were recommended to try here. It's a far drive but totally worth it! Sweet, flavorful sauce and a chewy, crusty crust. We will be back often!
google avatar

S. Badiyah A.

Yelp
i typed in "best pizza" in google and this shop was first on the list. i called to see if they delivered and they politely pointed me towards grub hub. i am SO glad i tried them because their pizza is phenomenal. most people online raved about their tomato pies (will try next time) and baked breads, but i decided to start with the basic and ordered a plain pizza. if you want fresh, brick-oven, dripping in flavor pizza, try them. OMG. i promise you're gonna love it.
google avatar

Frank G.

Yelp
I've missed having really great tomato pie for a long time. Then I learned about this bakery online and went there today. I got a 1/4 tomato pie (6 slices) for my wife and I, and it was delicious. It had a crisp crust, and lots of flavorful tomato on top. I also got a spicy hot Oreganato bread, which was also very good. I strongly recommend this place. It's across the street from the McDonald's in the 7600 block of Castor Avenue, and there's meter parking (a quarter for each 15 minutes).
google avatar

Neil H.

Yelp
Excellent tomato pie! I've lived 3 mins away from Gaeta's for 6 1/2 years and kept meaning to try it (it doesn't help that they don't deliver but no big deal). I'm mad I haven't eaten there before and cannot wait to go back. Also had a round pie and it was pretty great. My only negative was that I arrived right when they told me to for pickup (30 minutes after calling my order in) and the pizza was almost at room temperature. My oven fixed that but I'd expect it to be kept hot/warm in or on top of their oven for pickup.

Shannon H.

Yelp
Best. Tomato. Pies. EVER. Nothing more to say. Great to bring to a party and share with family/friends.

Jane D.

Yelp
If your pizza's are anything like your tomato pies I'll pass. It has to be one of the worst tomato pies I have ever tried. I have had tomato pies from several different places and of course the pies taste different when you order in house. The pies that I have gotten from retailers I would get again but not these. The sauce is a little sour and the dough is barely cooked. It could be because instead of making them in the shop you are mass producing to sell in stores which is where I got mine. So for now I will give barely a 3 star.
google avatar

Rob A.

Yelp
I was visiting my old neighborhood and stopped by with my.girls to grab some pie to take back to Lancaster County. This is still the best tomato pie in Philly, hands down. Perfect balance of sweet and tangy sauce, fresh light dough and a slight char on the edges.
google avatar

Walter C.

Yelp
Well we finally found a place that can stand with the south Philly bakeries. Their tomato pie is just fantastic. Its i bit more tougher dough and thicker but the taste is amazing!!! The tomatoes are fresh and moist. The seasoning is just enough to let you know its there but doesn't overpower the tomatoes. Its a cash only business but worth the cash and the drive!! If you're a fan of REAL tomato pie this is the place!!!!
google avatar

Robert M.

Yelp
My favorite pizza place in the city. The pepperoni pizza and breads are as good as I've had anywhere.
google avatar

Dao T.

Yelp
Ordered a small 6 piece tomatoes pie (dairy free) with pepperoni and sausage. Gentleman who answered the phone was very nice and my pick up experience was quick and easy. The pie was DELICIOUS. Will definitely come back for more !!!!

Steve S.

Yelp
I have been going here for decades being that I grew up in NE Philly, and still come down here from King of Prussia to pick up one of their tomato pies. I have tried them all from Corporlese Bakery in Norristown to Sarcones in South Philly and still haven't found one that tops Gaeta's. They have the best tomato pie in Philly, hands down.

Ashley O.

Yelp
This is nostalgia on a plate. I grew up eating this pizza and have loved it ever since. I remember going to my grandparents on weekends so excited to have the tomato pie with cheese. It's still my favorite "pizza".

Dino F.

Yelp
One of the best pizza's of all time and in the world. This is no joke! I like the tomato pie with cheese. It really isnt pulpy like tomato pie, but it is cooked in a metal pan, they cook the pizza 80% then put the cheese on and finish it. The sauce is sweet and acidic and delicious. Just like my grandmoms pie.
google avatar

Rob W.

Yelp
Best tomato pie i ever had and to think i found this place by complete accident thought it was a closed down bakery. What a find. Pizza is awesome and there large pizza is huge there small is like other pizza places large. The mix of italian spices makes this pizza oh so good .I order one for parties or get request to bring them to work always a favorite. And here the best part it's better to eat it cold. Coming from me that saying something because I don't like cold food.So I hope you take my advice you might accidentally fall in love with this little known gem.
google avatar

Scott M.

Yelp
Best tomato pie I've had in years. I drive up from Wilmington to grab a sheet of it on special occasions.
google avatar

Gerald F.

Yelp
Excellent tomato pie. This place is really unusual. Basically home, with some kind of oven in the back which uses almost 45 minutes to raise the tomato pie. While it is not like Chicago deep dish, it is an original of Philly which is the model of thick Sicilian tomato pie with an outstanding flavor and crusty ness. In my opinion, Chicago deep dish pie is just a whole bunch of shortening, butter, and oil added to an original Philly tomato pie recipe and then pounded with all kinds of stuff on top. Stick with the original. Here it is. Order early, they got crazy hours.
google avatar

Kenneth M.

Yelp
As stated by many ready: Without a doubt THE BEST TOMATOE PIE IN PHILADELPHIA. I didn't even like Tomatoe Pie , until Iz had a Gaetas Tomatoe Pie.
google avatar

Loretta C.

Yelp
Outstanding Tomato Pie-the crust is thin and the fresh tomato plus other ingredients make for a perfect pie. The ends and corners are my favorite!!! Two pies are perfect for parties. The white pies and the oreganot are also worth checking out.
google avatar

Andrea P.

Yelp
This is my favorite place. I grew up in Germantown. I live in California now but go to Philly at least once a year and get a full sheet. The family comes over and the 24 pieces are gone in no time. Others make tomato pie but no comparison to this. The sauce and dough combination is the best.
google avatar

Annette R.

Yelp
I'm sitting here in shock. Back in 2007 when we first moved to this area, I discovered Gaeta's and went inside. I am a tomato pie aficionado, and felt nobody could compare with Cacia's (the one in Blackwood, NJ, NOT their other outlets which apparently make it differently!) I bought a slice of Gaeta's and it was HORRIBLE. It was a small piece of what looked like square white toast, with just plain tomato sauce on it. NOTHING at all to speak of. Neighbors raved about the place, so I was confused! I chalked it up to Northeast people not knowing what true tomato pie was. Fast forward to 2015 and I was given a restaurant.com certificate for Gaeta's. I decided to give them another chance, steering clear of the tomato pie this time and just going for the broccoli-cheese bread (really a stromboli) and the oreganata (hot). While both the stromboli breads were good, I took a look at the tomato pie and this time it looked GOOD! Thicker crust, rich looking sauce, spices visible. I got 3 slices (one for each of us) and this time it ROCKED! I don't know what was going on with them back in 2007, but its good NOW! To think I deprived myself of their tomato pies all these years because of that dud experience in 2007!
google avatar

Michelle C.

Yelp
Good tomato pie. Not great. I honestly was a bit let down after reading all the rave reviews and being referred by a co-worker who swore this was the best tomato pie ever. I found it too plain for my taste and on the dry side. It was not bad at all, just not great. I ended up goin home and drizzling some olive oil on top and adding some crushed red pepper & parm cheese, def made it much better. I'd go back for another pie, but I've definitely tasted better tomato pies with better flavored sauce that wasn't as dry.
google avatar

Yelp
Thinking about Gaeta's tomato pie makes me drool. Perfect crunch. Eat it cold, warm it up, either way it's amazing.

Sandra Z.

Yelp
Best tomato pie I ever had. I have been eating this pie ever since I can remember. When you go to Philly remember this is a must!
