This place is extremely affordable and the chicken is nicely made. My favorite was the fried chicken meal. The skin was crisp and the meat itself was juicy. The roasted chicken comes in second and was nicely done. The charred parts weren't rock hard, and had overall had a good amount of flavor. Only problem I had was the chicken cartilage but that's normal. The rice lives up to its name and flavor, it was extra gingery and had ginger pieces. Personally, I am not a fan of ginger and would just get the plain rice next time but for customers who like that extra spice, def get the ginger rice. Their fries are amazing too. I'd love to comeback to try the chicken wings and curry puffs.

A little clean shop serving Thai-style Haianese steamed and roasted chicken, fried chicken, spring rolls and more. Very healthy, but wasn't as flavorful as I expected (I like the SIngaporean versions better I guess!). The ginger rice was very strong ginger. I really liked their soup, though it was very heavy on the white pepper (which I like, others may not).

The Mixed Steamed and Roasted Chicken was delicious. The cashier was polite and friendly. The restaurant was spacious with lots of seats and tables. For $10.5, this is a great deal. Recommended!

1) main dish was not hot (warm not to say almost cold). Appetizer was burning hot 2) no restrooms. I couldn’t wash my hands 3) I pointed at “crab Rangoon for 3,70$” and said “only one piece please”. I was given 4 and charged 7$. Not nice 4) food is mediocre at best Won’t come back. Don’t recommend

Chicken and rice was alright, very tender. Really loved the chive cubes, freshly fried , crunchy and flavorful. As for the fish cakes, it’s very lemongrass forward, not my thing but if you’re into it , they are also freshly fried and have a great texture.

After we placed the order on the machine #128. We waited for almost 30 minutes. Everyone behind our order already got the food, up to #138. We went to follow up with our order, the lady looked at my husband like he’s crazy. No apologize at all. Definitely not coming back and not recommending it to my friends.

Gai Kitchen serves up the most flavorful Hainanese steamed chicken and Thai-style roasted chicken over ginger garlic rice for such an affordable price! This fast-casual spot is cozy, budget-friendly, and will teleport you to the streets of Bangkok with their simple yet authentic menu.

Dropped in for just a snack and got the Crab Rangoons which for some reason I feel are so hard to come by in nyc. These were great! The filling was smooth and had nice flavor, and the dough was very very crispy which is what makes or breaks a rangoon for me so I was happy about that. My only gripe was that the amount of sauce was sooo small and definitely not enough! Also had a Thai Tea which was not too dense and rich, it was more of a refreshing and lighter, yet still creamy thai tea which was exactly what I needed in the moment so it hit so well.

Portions aren't big but honestly still pretty good. Not the best Haines chicken but I appreciate the gingery rice. Sauce is good.

3.5 Very casual eatery, located on busy Mott Street. Menu is on a couple of screens or posted around the counter. Order with cash, or cc with a 3.5% charge, and wait for your number to be called. There are tables - seating for 1-2 people or move tables for a larger group. I liked that Gai Kitchen had an option for a small serving of Thai hainanese chicken (4 dark meat slices), and ginger sauce (good but strong flavor for me so I added a little at a time). It came with ginger rice (or white rice), which reminded me of filipino adobo fried rice but with ginger).

The THAI STYLE HAINANESE CHICKEN was good which you can ask to get ginger rice. It felt homemade and not too fancy fancy since this is a pretty cheap reasonable place for a 2024 restaurant. The pink milk I "recommend" it if you American or non American that like sweet drinks. basically this place have a bunch of ways you can make the chicken, reg, roasted, or fried and it comes with rice in size small/large. They have spring rolls, fish cake, a few other bev, thai tea, thai coffee and price pretty good. My girlfriend love the taste of the ginger rice. Ginger rice you get or you can choose plain white rice with the chicken. last pic has fish cake and the texture reminds me on shrimp and close to its flavor but not the same since it has a lot of seasoning. they are small equivalent to a cucumber diameter when cut into slices.

Gai Kitchen offers thai style hainanese chicken rice and appetizers with most items under $10. My boyfriend is a self-proclaimed hainanese chicken expert. He approved their chicken rice and said we should visit more often. Given how affordable and tasty the food was, we'll definitely come back. ＊Roasted Chicken Ginger Rice (L) $9.5* ＊Hainanese Chicken Ginger Rice (L) $9.5* Small starts at $6.5 while large is only $9.5. They don't skimp out on the amount of rice and chicken while keeping it affordable. Their chicken was tender and the sauce on the side further enhanced the flavor. The ginger rice was fragrant and delicious. We added Red Curry ($3.75) to pour on our rice. It wasn't spicy and had a rich coconut milk taste. ＊Chive & Scallion Pancake $4.5* The pancakes came in 6 pieces, served in mini cubes. We didn't know what to expect but it turned out to be our favorite appetizer! It had a crispy and charred outer, while the center was as chewy as mochi. ＊Spicy Wings $10 I am obsessed with thai zabb seasoning so I was excited to try their wings. It was spicy with a hint of citrusy note. The chicken skin was perfectly crispy while the inside was still juicy. ＊Thai Iced Tea $3.95 ＊Pink Milk (Nom Yen) $3.95 Thai iced tea was great here. Made of sala syrup and cold milk, thai pink milk was described to taste like strawberry milk. We thought it looked and tasted like Pepto lol.

Such a comforting meal and everything was absolutely delicious. I ordered the large Thai-style roasted chicken with ginger rice and a Thai iced tea. The chicken was tender and flavorful, perfectly complemented by the aromatic ginger rice. The Thai iced tea was also sweet and refreshing. There's a good amount of seating inside if you want to dine in and the food came our pretty quickly. Overall, this spot is perfect for enjoying delicious, comforting food at a reasonable price. I will definitely be back to try the Hainanese chicken next time!

The food was delicious and they had so many options to choose from. The portions were a tad small but hey it just means I get to order more. The service was quick and they were super kind when we asked what the pink drink is. They also selected a good dishes for us to try! The place has a lot of seatings and it's quite open space.

My boyfriend and I were looking for a quick bite to share as we waited to eat dinner and this was the perfect place to go to in Chinatown. The prices are what first drew us in as they were extremely affordable, and were so surprised at how tasty and fresh the food was! We got the small roasted chicken with ginger rice and pink milk. The chicken was so soft and easy to chew into. I've never had ginger rice before, but this was such a great addition to the meal. Was not a fan of the pink milk personally, but my boyfriend fell in love with it. It's a very strong, fruity-tasting strawberry milk. Restaurant has a lot of seating and is pretty quiet and clean on the inside. Staff was very nice! Would definitely come again for a small bite if I'm in the area.

I am seriously done w/ these paid reviews... Fung Bros... you did me dirty... this spot is total garbage. Ugh. No more YT reviews... This spot was empty. Guess I should've saw that as a sign... alas... wanted to support small businesses but wow, some are just not meant to be. Got the small Hainanese Chicken Rice - BUT KNOW this is NOT really Hainan Chicken. It's Thai Style... aka, dry AF. Skin is so textured... like the dang chicken had goosebumps while being steamed. Meat is not moist. The rice was not fragrant... no yummy aroma. Splurged on the SIL egg, which is a fried soft boiled egg... meaningless, had no purpose. And OMG the freaking ice coffee was a sh*t show. PURE sugar on ice. I was able to consume 1/4 of the whole tray... but wasted the rest. Can't believe I wasted my bday calories on this TRASH. Please, go elsewhere. This is NOT IT. Periodt.

We were the 1st customer of the day since they just opened. This is almost like a self service restaurant. They have a kiosk and a counter to order from. I did order from the counter because all the pictures of the menu were already there. The service is really not the best, not very friendly. Being the 1st customer, I would expect the food to be fresh. However, I didn't think the taste of the chicken was that great, it lacked some chicken flavor like other hainanese chicken spot. The ginger sauce really helped enhanced the chicken. The rice was pretty flavorful though. Overall, it didn't really meet the expectations since I heard so many good things about this place. I will stick to the local Maylasian hainanese chicken in my neighborhood and the Hainanese/Thai chicken in Queens. They have many tables. Your number will be called for pickup. Also, they don't have a restroom.

Got the mixed steamed & roasted chicken and a side of Thai iced tea. Both types of chicken were flavorful and juicy, a good mix of a light flavor versus a more seasoned chicken. The chili and tamarind sauce was unique and gave it a slight spicy kick. The only thing I would say is that the chicken portion was a little small, so you're left with a lot of rice. The Thai iced tea was just right, refreshing and not too sweet. FYI, they charge a percentage fee for credit card so have cash if you don't want to pay the fee.

Saw this place on a YouTube video and wanted to try it. We were able to order using a kiosk and have our number called to get our order. Food was ready pretty quick. There were plenty of tables to dine in and it looked like a great casual lunch/dinner spot. Super affordable IMO for what you get. The fried chicken was delicious and I loved the sweet chili sauce and the son in law egg. Can't forget the Thai iced tea! Def returning again!

Gai Kitchen recently opened on Mott st and I checked it out spontaneously. I ordered the small chicken rice Thai Hainanese Chicken Rice. as well as a Jasmine Green Tea drink. The cashier forgot to give me accurate change but she did after I told her. There's a good amount of seating inside making it a great spot to dine in. The chicken skin layer was a little chewy and dried however, the inside was juicy. The jasmine green tea drink was amazing and refreshing.

Gai Kitchen is one of the best cheap eats! I love this new and bigger location for them which has lots of seating. The chicken over rice is so yummy and juicy. They also have great drinks like the Thai Iced Tea and Iced Jasmine Green Tea. Both are sweet and refreshing. The staff are very nice and quick with serving your food too!

Walked in here to grab some lunch because the place I was planning on going was crazy busy, and I'm glad I did! Super reasonably priced and the food was great. I got the Thai style roast chicken which was super soft and nice flavour. Garlic rice was super garlicky so if you like garlic definitely get it! The son in law egg gooey on the inside and with a fried texture on the outside but not sure it's worth the extra charge as it just tastes the a regular egg to me. The thai iced tea was nice cold and sweet. I waited about 15mins after ordering for my food which wasn't bad but wasn't as fast as I was expecting. The place itself is quite no-frills with plain wooden tables and simple decor but definitely a good stop for a quick lunch :)

Nice Thai food place that just moved its location. They have a self kiosk now for people who want to order fast. I went to their new location and got myself a large steamed and roasted chicken with ginger rice. Could definitely taste chunks of ginger in the rice, which is very healthy. Chicken is so tender and not fatty at all. I got the bowl with a Lawson egg and the egg was so delicious. The yolk inside the egg is not overcooked and still pretty wet, which is my liking. Came with a free soup that is filled with scallions and a hint of spice.

tldr solid spot for thai style chicken and rice spot with lots of customization options on size + type of chicken and affordable in chinatown! randomly stopped by for a quick late lunch + went with a small thai style chicken and rice which i really appreciated for a whopping $6.50 and pretty filling. note they do charge a 3.5% cc fee so cash is king y'all! chicken and rice (3.75/5) perhaps the fact i went to southeast asia before has made me a hard judge on this dish but this place executes this dish well for US standards with a moist and tender thigh chicken on top a bed of fluffy flavorful and fragrant ginger rice! the spicy sauce that comes on the side is also pretty ginger forward and packs a light spice punch which i like but can predict is not for everyone. my critique is the chicken skin can be done better and less tough + overall dish is a bit too ginger forward (sauce + rice)! also i find it pretty customary for places to give some soy sauce/non ginger sauce to go with this dish as well but was missing. the cucumbers were a nice relief from the ginger flavor. food 3.75/5 service 4/5 ambiance 3/5 no bathroom value 4/5

I ordered chive nd scallion pancake, large roasted hainasses and steam. The hainasseses are missing the cilantro. The ginger sauce lacking of spice. This place is for quick bite, but they don't have bathroom, so keep that in mind when you dine here. You can order thru the kiok to save time, and they will shout your number when it's ready. The restaurant has dine in section, and you will need to clean up after yourself. The people there are very friendly!

Came upon this place and the sign outside caught my attention. I got the large Hainanese chicken and the mixed combo. Both were delicious. I was expecting a little more chicken. The rice has ginger inside which is good to keep you warm on a cold NYC autumn. If you're not a fan of ginger, definitely see if they can just do it with white rice. It came with soup which was filled half a cup. Will definitely come back if I want something quick.

One of my go-to meals. It's flavorful, it's affordable, it's filling -- what more can you really ask for!! I used to go here when it was a smaller stall in one of the Mott St. food courts, until one day I went and found out they had opened their own store! Congratulations to Gai Kitchen, your success is truly well earned, and I plan to continue going as long as the prices stay low! Usually do takeout here because there is not much eating space.

Prices were super affordable for what you get. The place smelled like fragrant poached chicken in the best way. I absolutely loved the mixed steamed chicken and roasted chicken combo with ginger and garlic rice. I would come back for that. It came with a complimentary chicken soup so that was nice. Garlic wings were a no go. It looked so good but unfortunately, it didn't meet the mark. It was not fried long enough so some pieces were a bit red. Additionally, it needed more flavors and needs to be marinated more. The crispy skin could be fried more so it doesn't taste like soft chicken skin at one point. I saw some chicken hair on the wings that were fried together. Thai iced coffee didn't taste that strong and was not that sweet. I like that it's not too sweet but overall, it's different than most of the other Thai iced coffee I tried. The price and value is so good. I would come back to support them just for that reason. I would like to try other items like the jasmine green tea latte and the pink drink. There was some seating inside and it was not hard to find a spot. The employee was nice and you order and pay upfront.

Just a quick update that this restaurant is still very good after their move (to 51 Mott Street). I had a small Thai-style roasted chicken with ginger rice dish, with an iced green tea on the side, for lunch recently. Delicious! The space is clean, the service is on point, and you can't beat the price...do give them a try!

Excited to eat at Gai Kitchen at their new on-street location at 51 Mott. Recommend checking out Gai Kitchen, a fantastic Thai/Hainan place with reasonably priced options! Discovered them earlier in the inconspicuous, almost hidden, 98 Mott Food Court while running through Chinatown on errands. Went then for Gai's Mixed Combo with a Son-in-law Egg, which included: cup of chicken broth, a dish with two types of wonderful chicken - Hainanese (steamed) chicken with a side of Ginger Garlic Sauce and Thai Style Roasted Chicken with Tamarind Chili Sauce - on top of a bed of absolutely sublime Ginger rice, cucumber spears garnish, plus that Son-in-law Egg. As explained by their friendly crew, the Son-in-law Egg is soft boiled, then lightly fried. [FYI - From my understanding, Gai is chicken in Chinese, Hainan is a Chinese island province located in the South China Sea, and Son-in-law Eggs are a Thai thing.] Enjoyed now from this new location my next order of their Mixed Combo with Son-in-law Egg! P.S. Please reply to this review if you have the story behind why it's called a Son-in-law Egg!

I've been coming here since they were in the Mott Street food court. I visited during their grand opening when it was almost empty, and my go-to dish has always been the grilled chicken with ginger rice--delicious and a great value for the price. On my recent visit during the afternoon lunch hour, the place was super packed. Another change is that they've closed the restroom for customers

Hainanese chicken rice is one of my favorite foods and gai kitchen def hits the spot. It's delicious, great value, and they are pretty generous with both the chicken and rice. I got the mixed steamed and roasted chicken bc I wanted to try both and glad I did. Both so flavorful and juicy, and the ginger rice was also very aromatic. It comes with a little cup of soup which was also tasty. They have a touch screen kiosk where you can order and pay with card btw! The chicken rice came out within a couple min but crab Rangoon took longer.

if i could order this everyday i would. the chicken and ginger rice was so flavorful i devoured the large portion. and don't sleep on their sides either because the chive & scallion pancake really surprised me! what we ordered: - mixed steamed & roasted chicken - small thai style roasted chicken - chive & scallion pancake they have a kiosk to save some time ordering, but be warned the line gets quite long (for good reasons). we went on a rainy day and the food still came out pretty quick even though the line was almost out the door. the restaurant itself had plenty of seating and was super clean but we saw many people taking their order to-go. this is definitely your typical quick easy bite in chinatown!!

It's a stall in a food court setting inside the Mott Street Eatery just north of Canal Street. Gai means chicken in Thai. So you can pretty much guess chicken is their specialty. Actually they pretty much have 2 main dishes to choose from: Hainanese chicken (steamed) or Thai chicken (roasted). The latter looks much better though taste-wise they are comparable. Neither has strong taste and rely on the sauce the comes on the side. Chicken are cooked perfectly, tender and juicy, and expertly cut with skin still attached and bones removed. You have a choice of white rice or ginger rice. Definitely go for the ginger rice because for me it's the soul of the meal here; it's what defines Gai Chicken and the reason I would come back again. So good! 2 sizes. $5.99 for small and $8.99 for large. The latter also come with a small cup of broth. We've always ordered the large during the 2 visits so far. There is in fact a third dish, the fried wings, but the main dishes have been so good that we couldn't skip. Maybe next time!

Solid spot for fast casual steamed chicken with some flavorful rice. They have a small option with just a few oieces of chicken with rice, cumcumber ahd sauce or a larger option with more rice, a little more chicken, cucumbers, sauce and also a small cup of soup. Service was a decent pace and the interior is super casual and chill. You can also order through the self service kiosk if there's a line. They charge a credit card fee so be aware of that as well.

Cheap and delicious. I got the small Thai style roasted chicken and it was enough to be satisfied if you wanted something small yet filling. Can order at the kiosk and it was ready very quickly. Pay in cash to save on credit card fees. Great place for sit down or grab and go.

Pretty decent amount of food for less than $15. I got the large hainanese chicken and paid extra for the egg. It also came with a small soup. I really liked the garlic chicken rice and the staff member who waited on me was very nice.

I passed by this place a few times and was intrigued by their menu so I decided to give it a try. This place is a self service eatery where you can order either through machine or front counter. It could get quite busy during lunch time and weekends. I got the thai chicken and it's was pretty decent. For the price you pay it's a good amount of food. The chicken was pretty good and went well with the sauce. The garlic ginger rice was extremely gingery and garlicy. It was too overpowering for my taste but if you really like ginger and garlic the rice would right for you. Also, the green thai tea was pretty good. I never had a green thai tea before and the flavor is kinda refreshing and minty.

Great value and delicious food! The chicken is so flavorful and crispy- definitely a top eat here. The onion pancake is so unique -- one of my favorite things I've had in Chinatown! Perfect blend of crispy, hot, and savory. In cubes and it's also juicy and bouncy :)

The service was friendly- and the atmosphere is what I would expect for a food court in Chinatown. It was really the food that let me down. It's suppose to showcase hainanese chicken and rice. My chicken was not steamed. I mean I think it was initially but then I think they don't get enough customers that they put it in the same warmer as their roasted chicken so then my chicken ended up being roasted and chewy and tasting like soy sauce on the skin when that's not suppose to be the flavor for steamed chicken. It was gross. Not authentic at all. The rice at least wasn't dry. But I don't think I will ever eat here again since their main dish was so poorly executed. Update responding to the business owner: i apologize that I got your business mixed up with gai chicken and rice. You have the same business model and same menu. I will update my review to state it's steamed instead of poached chicken (hainanese chicken is usually simmered gently in broth- hence the poached term I used. But yes you can say steamed.) however does it the chicken look steamed in the picture I've provided? So I will update my review with the corrections but please acknowledge what your kitchen prepared and it's not steamed hainanese chicken.

Although they specialize in Hainanese steamed chicken and Thai-style roasted chicken, their menu also offers various sides and drinks, such as garlic or spicy wings, crispy fries, fried tofu, Thai iced tea, and more. * Mixed Steamed and Roasted Chicken with Ginger Garlic Rice $10.00 We ordered the mixed to try both flavors and easily loved both. The steamed chicken was juicy, moist, and tender, while the roasted chicken was well-marinated and packed with flavor. It came with two sauces--a ginger-garlic sauce and a chili-tamarind sauce--both of which I didn't like, and did without. We also added a son-in-law egg for an additional $1.90, which is on the pricier side, yes, but the crispy egg exterior and sweet, runny interior made it well worth the cost. * Pink Milk $3.75 I can't quite put my finger on it, but I really struggled to like this drink. It's not terribly sweet, which was great, but it tasted like a combination of strawberry, bubble gum, and Pepto-Bismol. If the three got together and had a baby, that's the taste of pink milk in a nutshell. * Crispy Spring Rolls $3.75 Tasty and incredibly crispy, though a tad soggy on the inside. Good, but I probably wouldn't reorder.

Great news lunch place! Love that they have a smaller size option for $5.99 that's great for people that don't eat too much. Excited to try the other things on their menu including their Thai iced tea that's extremely reasonably priced at $3.75. Plus - they're run by Thai people so id consider it a pretty authentic experience.

This seems to be a popular spot during lunch. Being able to get a box of rice, few pieces of chicken and some slices of cucumber for under $10 is a steal nowadays. I tried their Thai roasted chicken and it was quite tasty. FYI, they don't include the tax if you pay with cash versus card.

Food was pretty good for the price. Service is a bit slow. The atmosphere is normal, no music just people talking. They have a good number of seats if you dine inside to eat. They have a credit card fee just incase you wonder why the price was up by like 1$. Overall good spot to eat for averaging 10$ a person.

One of the more affordable lunch options in the city. This seemed to be the most popular stand in the Mott Street Eatery food court so we decided to give it a try. Got both the Steamed chicken and the Thai style roast chicken and both were very moist and tasty. I liked the roast chicken more since it was a bit more flavorful. Loved the garlic rice! Unfortunately, I was not a fan of the sauces that came with the chicken and much prefer the sauces that typically accompany Malaysian Hainanese chicken but this is just personal preference.

Wr accidentally stumbled into this food court after hair cut. Got the Thai style chicken rice and it came with a small cup of soup. Good portion of rice but were dry. Poached chicken was ok and there was nothing special. The sauce had an after kick. I also bought chicken rice across at the Singaporean store. IMO, the portion and quality were much better.

$9 for a large hainanese chicken with rice is great value in this economy. The Thai iced tea tastes good. The staff was friendly and service is quick. I brought my food home, but the ambiance inside the restaurant was nice. Highly recommended

This is definitely a cheap eat worth checking out! Everything on the menu is $10 or less. Located in Mott Street Eatery, there are some tables to dine in, however it can get crowded. I got the large steamed and large thai style roasted chicken, and a pink milk. Both chicken dishes were great, with my favorite being the roasted chicken. Be sure to get the garlic rice! It's not a strong garlic flavor like what I would like, more on the mild end, but still good. The pink milk was like a sweet strawberry milk, however it was a little too sweet for me. Service was good and I got my food within 10 minutes on a Sunday afternoon.

Great meal for under $10. The small is about $6 and the large is about $9. Hainanese chicken or roasted chicken with choice of ginger rice or jasmine rice. It comes which a cup of soup, which is also delicious. It's inside the food hall to the left. You can take out or eat there at the tables that are shared with the other food vendors. They will be moving in a few months to 51 Mott St. Try it now before prices go up.

I enjoyed a to-go order hainan chicken rice and it was delicious! I will definitely come back. The wait was longer than expected. It is a small shop with 5-6 tables.

I was excited to try this, and it did not disappoint! Located in the Mott Street food court, you'll find this stand easily with its stand out hip decor. We got the Mixed Steam and Roasted Chicken with Ginger Rice and Son in Law Egg, which was around $13. Do yourself a favor and get that extra egg! Its runny dynamic adds flavor to the already delicious rice, and the fun juxtaposition of the slightly tough exterior with a super delicate interior makes the egg fun to eat. Both chicken were equally as good, with both offering that same soft texture. Soft, easy to bite, chicken is so important, as we didn't pay to struggle chewing! Instead of the traditional ginger scallion dip, which I dearly missed eating this, they give a sweet chili and a spicy sauce for if you want an extra kick.
