Our visit
My wife, Shirleen, our child, and I recently spent an unforgettable evening at Galle Face Green — an expansive, ocean-side promenade right in the heart of Colombo. The vast grassy lawn stretches about 500 m along the Indian Ocean, offering the perfect space for families, kite-flying, and relaxed strolls.
What makes Galle Face Green special is its lively yet welcoming energy. The cooling sea breeze is constant, making it a popular spot for day-trippers, couples, kite enthusiasts, and children — exactly the vibe we experienced. Whether you’re laying out a picnic, chasing a kite, or simply watching the waves, it’s impossible not to feel uplifted.
Our child loved running across the grass, flying a rented kite, and absorbing the friendly crowd. The paved walkway is stroller and wheelchair accessible, so Shirleen and I could easily move around without difficulty . It’s definitely a family-friendly outing.
As the sun dipped low, the street food vendors sprang to life. We sampled iconic snacks like isso wade (prawn fritters), spicy kottu roti, freshly cut mango sprinkled with chili and salt, and king coconut. While I’d say the food was good—not Michelin standard—it was vibrant, authentic, and fun to try.
