The 24 Best Restaurants in Monterrey, Mexico | Eater

"This charming high-end restaurant evokes a grocery store in design, but it’s a wonderful place to delve through classic Northern Mexican dishes, such as prime cuts of juicy grilled meat, as well as inventive tacos. Start with scallop crackers, then go for the sirloin milanesa taco stuffed with french fries, the beefsteak and bone marrow taco, or the beet tostada with chile morita sauce. Save room for the pistachio cake for dessert. [$$$]" - Liliana López Sorzano

Good Service, The Arrachera Steak was fenomenal & the Cheesecake delicious. The Paloma or as they call it, the Gavilan was a good drink option.

Google
Definitely the best Mexican in town! I especially loved their cauliflowers, beef tacos and the blueberry cheesecake. The ambiance is so nice.

The service here was exceptional. Someone was always at the ready to help. The minute we sat down at the table the waiter recommended some drinks from the bar to get us started. They were very accommodating throughout the whole service. The salad was very fresh. The bone marrow was delicious and the tortillas were perfectly warm. The steak was delicious and cooked to perfection, with the side of cauliflower perfectly roasted. The cake was delicious but a bit big and de absent. I highly recommend this place.

A colleague brought us to this restaurant for dinner, and I didn't have any particular expectations, but I was truly impressed! Every dish we ordered was outstanding. To start, we had scallops, which were my favorite, and tacos. The salsa that came with the scallops took it to the next level. The tacos weren't your typical street tacos, but they were excellent. Among the two, I particularly loved the tacos de trompo (Al pastor). For our main course, we chose the Ribeye and Arrachera. While the Ribeye was good, the Arrachera was exceptional, grilled to perfection, incredibly juicy, and bursting with flavor. We ended the meal with a nice blueberry cheesecake that came in a generous portion. The service was exceptional, with attentive staff.

Google
A stunning first time ‘Mexican food in Mexico’ experience! Although not the classic Mexican restaurant it was a great fusion experience of street food meets Mexican steakhouse done to a high standard, service was attentive & personable. Highly recommend, I will be going back.

Google
Excellent service and innovative food options. 2nd Visit - seems the restaurant is consistent on quality and service. Beef is cooked exceptionally well. Suggest you try the pistachio cake. Very little English spoken here.

Delicious for an authentic comida from Monterrey. The cheescake was huge and with the right amount of sweetness. The meat and guacamole were perfectly cooked.

Gallo 71 has been my favorite place in Monterrey so far. We had the tacos árabes with pastor meat, which were great (but somewhat small), the truffle fries, the cauliflower steak (which was delicious but i’d say $300 for a cauliflowers is a bit excessive), and the enormous and delicious carrot cake. We had apperols at first (which we could have spared, as they did with the prosecco), but my favorite dish was the “Healthy” (hibiscus, orange, lime and mezcal). I’d come back just to get a couple more of those drinks.

Yelp
So good!!! the fried octopus is a must, the queso fundido (we added arugula and tomatoes to it) was nice and stretchy and tasted great. i didn't get a picture of that (plus the cheese thickens pretty quickly, so eat fast). The place itself is very nice and looks cute and the price isn't that bad (for what the US would charge). Great service as well. we got the fried octopus (chicharrón de pulpo). it was amazing. one of the best we've had! the asparagus was good, just regular. We didn't care too much for the sauce with it. the steak was perfectly prepared per the temperature!!! It was so good. A bit too salty though but they bring out this sauce with a kick for it and it was sooo good (and it neutralized the saltiness a bit). then we got the cheesecake with pistachio. It was a frozen cheesecake--kind of had the consistency of ice cream but was sooo good. I think it normally comes with just blueberries on top but we saw a picture of this online before with mangoes too so we asked if they could add both mangoes and blueberries. overall, we were very pleased!

Yelp
If you are in Monterrey, Mexico and want great Northern Mexican food with great service and at a nice place then come to Gallo 71. This was my first visit to this restaurant and it won't be my last for sure. The food is fantastic, the service is great and the atmosphere is really nice. The tacos al pastor made with charcoal and the steak salad are simply fantastic.

Yelp
Great tasting food, excellent service. I had a great experience. The octopus and the fish plate I order was made to perfection. I really recommend you stop by and have dinner here if you are around the area and try new things.

Yelp
Absolutely exquisite! I guess I haven't eaten that well in my life up until this point. Apparently I've just been shoving random food in my mouth or something. Never have I tasted such layers and complexities of flavors in food before. I was in heaven! They had plenty of vegetarian and vegan options. ¡Muchisimas gracias! I had the Veggie Equite Tacos and the Cauliflower Steak. Both were amazing. They had these wonderful sauces that teased out even more flavor - in freaking cauliflower! My husband had the Spicy Fish Tostada and was similarly drooling and in awe of the tastes. We did not play the part of a sophisticated American couple in Monterrey because we were just so overwhelmed by how delicious everything was. We also got a Beet Pistachio Salad that was only -sigh- good. It really could have used some queso fresco but maybe they were trying to keep it vegan. All round, 5 stars for excellent service and super delicious food. I'm going to have to look for better food back home in Dallas!

Yelp
Amazing food, the "steak de coliflor" was really good I highly recommend. The tacos were amazing and the sauces that came with them were on point. The "chicharrón de pulpo" was extremely salty, we couldn't even eat it. The pistacho cake was AMAZING! You have to get it! Will be coming back

Yelp
Amazing restaurant with great food and ambience. Great drinks as well. Reservation required otherwise you may have to wait for a long time.

Yelp
As awesome as it can get!!! Really great place for a great date, they have a great menu and drink selection. Waiter was really attentive, valet service etc etc.. pricing is fair, for the level of technique and freshness of product. I will continue to patronize this restaurant in the future. Great job Gallo 71 .

Yelp
Gallo 71 is arguably the BEST restaurant in Monterrey offering high-end Mexican cuisine with an trendy atmosphere. The place is well known for its superb steaks, its top quality fish, gourmet tacos, elegant wine list and an overall trendy atmosphere. I'm a regular at this place and this time we ordered (check pictures): 1. Ribeye tacos with bone marrow: not a light dish for dinner but the flavor is incomparable 2. Roasted beet over strained yoghurt: very interesting mix of flavors, although a bit spicy 3. Akaushi ribeye steak: among the best steaks I've had in the city, tender and great taste! 4. Roasted whole chicken: tender, juicy and with a mild spicy flavor, delicious! If anyone visited Monterrey and wanted to try the local cuisine, the is the place I would suggest to anyone!

Yelp
Expensive place, snobbish one I would say. Food I tried wasn't bad, but definitely not the best in Mexico. Maybe focuses on guests from the USA. BTW. Shouldn't be $$$$?

Yelp
Cute and comfortable atmosphere. Friendly staff. The menu to me didn't seem to have a lot of variety - but I am basing this on visiting Mercurio the night before where they had similar dishes (steak cuts, octopus, truffle fries, etc). I was disappointed that they were out of the ribeye when we got there (around 7ish) - and this is an early dinner time for the area I am told. The salsa before the meal was made fresh but was way too spicy for me. I ordered the filet (250g) chemise style. I guess I didn't realize the filet would be sitting in a bunch of sauce. I am not a person that likes my steak seasoned a lot of drowned in sauce, it takes away from the flavor of the actual steak. The sauce was actually pretty good so I didn't mind it, but I think I still would have preferred the sauce on the side. The steak was cooked perfectly (med rare) for me and was very tender. The truffle fries were a huge hit. My friend ordered the pork tacos which were actually amazing. I think I would have preferred ordering those instead! Dessert options were not great. We could choose between cheesecake, Key lime pie or carrot cake. We got key lime pie. The pie was actually great but like the other restaurant I visited, this dessert was partially frozen. I am a huge dessert fan and haven't found a place that makes their own desserts yet which is a bummer.

Yelp
New fun festive space and take on northern Mexican Cuisine! The waiters are very attentive, engage with them and you'll have even a better foodie experience. Not over pretentious for either a group or couples dinner . The marrow bones are to die for and just something you don't see everyday !

Yelp
Pitch perfect food, service and ambiance. Few distractions were courses served backwards can't deride the stellar dishes.

Yelp
I will be back! Great food and vibes. Drinks were made like a real bartender should and service was attentive.

Yelp
When it comes to Gallo 71, people tend to either love it or hate it. I particularly didn't love it. Now, I can't give it less than four stars because the place is not bad at all. The food tastes good and the service was good. But, like me, a lot of people think the place is a bit overpriced and over-rated. The same company has another restaurant called "La Nacional" who, in my opinion, offers way better food and an overall better price and experience. The architecture of Gallo 71 falls a bit into the boring category, while the music does the same. You might want to try it, as you might fall in the "lovers" category (people who like it, REALLY like it) but expect overly-high prices ;)

Yelp
This place is excellent. The gringa tacos are to die for and for some reason the French fries here are so crunchy and addictive. Can't get enough of them. One of my favorites in MTY! So tasty!

Yelp
I don't get it. Service and decor were great but food didn't add up to the price at all. The octopus was horrible. Over cooked and salty and the tostadas to start were burnt then to make matters worse the expensive "catch of the day" was over salty. Don't recommend. But again service was great and so was the decor.

Yelp
Highly recommended. It's a bit pricy but the food is excellent. I tried Volcanes de arrechera, tacos con arrechera & tuétano, queso fundido.

Yelp
Good place to eat had their tacos de trompo was really good but was a bit pricey but overall good place to eat.

Yelp
By far my favorite restaurant in Monterrey. Although known for their steaks like their sister restaurant La Nacional, they killed it with the pescado (Fish). I would highly recommend the scallops for starters as well as the tacos de pescado which were both exquisite. Also the culiflower is always fun to get when with a group of people.

Yelp
One of the best in Monterrey. Great steaks. The cauliflower is incredible! Great drinks. Very good find with a casual vibe. Definitely must go!

Yelp
I'm still sitting in the restaurant right now as I write this review. That's how impressed I am with this place. Extremely great service. Raul, our waiter was excellent. Every dish he recommended was very tasty. What's more important though is he managed to anticipate almost everything we needed at almost the exact time we needed it during our meal. I will highly recommend Gallo 71 for anyone in Monterrey for the food, great service and ambience.

Yelp
Overpriced. The food is actually good--but it is pretty ordinary for the price. If you think this is a good place to try local cuisine--you need to expand your food horizons (and maybe try to be less pretentious). In addition, the waiters seemed to take advantage of us--not sure if this happened because we were speaking in English as we had some guests from the US with us. Long story short--one of my friends was going to order a gringa, but asked for a pirata--the waiter said they didn't have it in the menu, but they could make it for him. Then, the waiter clarified--I'll get you an arrachera and a queso flameado, and I'll do the pirata for you--my friend said no as it seemed too much food--so the waiter agreed he could just make the pirata. Some of us heard that and two additional pirata orders were placed. The waiter brought next to us 3 arracheras and 3 quesos flameados and of course, charged us for it. Not only our piratas were swimming in chesse--but I felt this behavior as abusive. Sigh. The atmosphere is comfortable for a large group, but the architecture and design of the place is on the boring side.
