Greenville Avenue Will Soon Be Home to a New Italian Eatery - Eater Dallas

"Later this spring, Greenville Avenue will be home to a brand new Italian eatery called Gallo Nero Italian Bistro. The restaurant is set to open its doors at 1905 Greenville Avenue, and is a sister spot to Lancaster Italian restaurant Roma’s Italian, according to CultureMap. The restaurant’s name is Italian for “black cock,” which is apparently a common moniker for red sauce joints in Italy and beyond judging by the number of restaurants that will share a name with Gallo Nero when it arrives in Dallas. Despite Greenville Avenue’s booming restaurant scene, the owners of Gallo Nero have no qualms about setting up shop in one of the city’s busiest dining districts. “Greenville Avenue is a big step for us, but we have two things in our favor,” owner Florenc Leshnja told CultureMap. “First, our food is good, and we have great service. We hope those two things combined will win us customers.” As far as the menu is concerned, diners can look forward to classic Italian-American dishes like lasagna and eggplant parmesan, along with a full bar that will take advantage of the space’s built-in wine cellar. Gallo Nero is expected to make its Greenville Avenue debut sometime in April. Stay tuned for an official opening date." - Amy McCarthy

I came here with a friend for their half off wine Wednesday deal…what a steal! The owner, Lisa, was super nice and knowledgeable; she recommended the eggplant parmesan. I forgot to take a picture because I ate it too quickly! Perfectly thin and lightly breaded slices, with a generous amount of cheese and yummy sauce. If you’re looking for great Italian in Dallas, Gallo Nero is a high-quality spot!

Google
My wife and I recently relocated from Italy to Texas, and this restaurant stands out as one of the best Italian eateries we’ve ever visited. It’s like stepping into a familiar home away from home. The owner is incredibly friendly, and the staff is always attentive to our needs. The Tortellini Alla Panna is prepared just like my grandmother used to make it, it’s perfect! Sitting outside with a view, we feel so content, even though we’re so far we feel at home.

Took my sweetie for a wonderful date night. Everything was great … from the atmosphere, the service & food. I had the lasagna and garlic bread. Highly recommend for date night!

Wonderful spot for hearty and delicious Italian food! Service from Alexis and Lucia was fantastic and the people/car watching from the patio is always fun!

Google
This is my first time eating here, and let me tell you, their food is fantastic. Everything we ate was delicious!!! Lucia was our waitress and was so friendly and helpful. We will definitely be back to this charming restaurant!!!

Olivia L.

Yelp
Great restaurant and service! The food was 10/10 and Lucia was a wonderful server! Would definitely be back for the ambiance, location, food, and service! Recommend the tour of Italy!

Yelp
Worst service ever. Food was mediocre. I made a reservation for dinner here with a girl friend the other night and showed up a little after her. When I sat down the server was nowhere to be found for at least 30 minutes. I went up to the bar to order as sitting in the restaurant all night with no food or drinks wasn't part of my evening plans. The bartender gladly took my food and drink order, 10 minutes after, the actual server showed up from talking with a group of coworkers in the back (over 40 minutes since I had sat down) and asked if I wanted anything to drink. I told her I ordered at the bar which she then checked on and came back telling me they couldn't do our food order- which means they hadn't even started prepping it in the kitchen yet. We picked the gnocchi to share and it took a while to come out. When the pasta arrived there was a film over the top of the sauce as it had clearly been sitting back there for a while. Drinks were good. I'll also note that after figuring out who our server was, I noticed she had sat a whole new table next to us and helped them but didn't think to take two steps over and check on our table ? didn't notice a new person had sat down? The restaurant was not busy by any means and most of the tables were empty. Me and my friend were ready to just leave the place but we had waited there for so long at that point that nothing else would've been available or easy to get in to at that time of night on a Friday. Overall, horrible service, and the food was nothing special to return for.

Yelp
We were craving mozzarella sticks and saw it from the street on the menu. There was a "Rosé" promotion going on so the aesthetic was very pink. The decor is definitely dated. I imagine the place has been there a couple decades. Not my style but made me excited for the food. It was a Saturday afternoon and we were the only customers. The server was friendly but didn't seem to know much about the restaurant food. We ordered.... Gallo Nero Sampler 0/10- the mozzarella sticks were limp not crisp at all and the cheese wasn't all the way melted/ the calamari was crispy but had zero flavor and was a bit rubbery/ the shrimp in vodka sauce was a little odd as I couldn't identify the texture of the shrimp...maybe undercooked (??); tiramisu 0/10 - it was frozen and began to thaw as it sat but now you have sporadic ice crystals throughout the cake We took one bite of everything and checked out. It was a very underwhelming experience.

Yelp
We've been looking for a local Italian restaurant with delicious options and reasonable prices, and this was it! The location is fantastic, situated in the heart of Lower Greenville in a fun vibrant area. Parking was easy as there was a free lot adjacent to the restaurant. The staff were welcoming and kind, and eager to accommodate in whatever way. The menu was broad and the prices were the most reasonable we've see in the downtown Dallas area! We had the spaghetti bolognese (beef ragu vs meatballs) and the Parmesan crusted tilapia with Alfredo linguini. The portions were large and each dish was beyond delicious!! This may have become our new local Italian spot.
google avatar

Yelp
Everything is frozen and not authentic. Gross. Service was average but it's kinda depressing! No one was mean but it was awkward. The tables weren't big enough for the plates. Needs new leadership.
google avatar

Caroline Z.

Yelp
Chicken Rigatoni Vodka Not a bad pasta, but needed more flavor. Pasta was cooked alright, the chicken was pretty good. Just not particularly outstanding.

Cameron K.

Yelp
I was invited by my friends to Gallo Nero, and the service and food was great. I had delicious Lobster Ravioli . The bartender was friendly and he made me amazing smoked old fashion. Definitely will come back for sure.

Yelp
Friday was our first time here after a recommendation from a friend! I really enjoyed it! Our server was very friendly and knowledgeable, the food was very good and freshly made, and it the inside was very cute!! I'll be back soon!

Yelp
Had a reservation tonight for 6:30pm. We weren't seated until 6:58. Took another 10-15 minutes for our server to take our drink order. We placed our full order with our drink order bc we had tickets to a show across the street at 8. After waiting 15 minutes for our drinks, we decided to cancel our order and leave. Host was not helpful upon arrival. No sense of urgency from the staff. Pretty disappointed as I've eaten here before and had a pleasant experience before
google avatar

Shane S.

Yelp
Very average Italian. The baked ziti was a bit too sweet for my liking. It did have an appropriate amount of cheese and ricotta but it tasted more like a sweetened pink sauce that was just a bit too sweet. My pasta was a bit overcooked but I'll chalk that up to be a drawback of delivery, not the restaurant. Garlic bread was pretty decent actually. I liked the tomatoes as an X factor.
google avatar

Victoria E.

Yelp
Great food fun place to enjoy pizza and more. While on lower Greenville this is a must for some food and cocktails. Service is great with friendly staff members.
google avatar

Yelp
this place is super cute and casual if you're looking for a chill italian dinner. prices are reasonable and food is good! service was not the best but we made our own fun and would still recommend

Yelp
Didn't catch his name, but the bartender working Sunday night (1/12/24) gave incredibly exceptional service! Today was a really long and hard work day for me personally, so walking in to that level of hospitality was fantastic. Chicken parm was delicious as well.
google avatar

Rome M.

Yelp
Nice convenient spot in Lower Greenville. No frills bar, but solid spirits selection. You're served warm yeast rolls that are were obviously frozen, but better with olive oil or marinera sauce. Try the garlic bread...super simple but tasty. Pizza Carne--basically a 14" meat lover's pizza for 2. Not spectacular. Probably frozen crust. Grilled Salmon & veggies --my wife gave it a 6.5/10 but said it was tasty. The veggies were really good too. Good service! I'll be back to try the more signature Italian dishes.

Yelp
What an amazing meal we had yesterday. On the fly, we decided to step out and try a new place. This Italian restaurant called our names and we are so glad we responded. Will, our server was kind and quick with everything he did. He answered our millions of questions and gave amazing recommendations. We ordered lots of food, including the Chicken Rigatoni, Eggplant Parmigiana, and Chicken Alfredo Pizza. The chef must have been cooking for his life the way he created our dinner. The pasta was so good I kept eating when I was full. The garlic knots were warm and buttery, and the pizza was creamy and the perfect combination of pasta remixed into pizza. We love to recap after a long week of teaching, but during this meal, it was merely impossible to interact with anything other than the flavor and the aura in the place.
google avatar

Shannon B.

Yelp
Cool atmosphere. Food was good. We got the chicken parm and it was... well chicken parm. Waiter was nice.

Madison L.

Yelp
Unsure if the kitchen staff has changed or prices increased but i can't believe this place has a good rating. food is bland and tastes right out of a freezer the drinks were not good and the price vs quality could not be justified. on top of that they pre add tip for parties bigger than 4 and dont mention beforehand so we ended up double tipping.
google avatar

Yelp
Lucia our server was that girl! The food was okay but the service was really nice and helpful! Beautiful Costa Rica Chica
google avatar

Julio R.

Yelp
Let me start by saying the food is absolutely delicious. You're probably wondering why I didn't give it 5 stars then. Well it may seem like I'm splitting hairs but the only reason it's not a 5 star to me is the customer service seems a bit cold. I've been here twice and both times it just seemed like they were understaffed and they were overworked. I sympathize with the employees so I don't fault them but to me if you don't have the food, quality, and customer service then it's hard for me to give a 5 star review. The pours of wine we received were very generous so that was great and the food portions were appropriate so you won't have a lot to take home. But everything that comes to your table will probably be delicious. It is hands down one of our favorite Italian places in the Dallas area. I'll continue to come back every chance I get and definitely recommend this place! That's all for now, ok now bye bye then!
google avatar

Franki H.

Yelp
This is below average Italian food. The location is good but there was a reason it was empty inside. We started off with stale bread; we asked if there was any fresher options but told that is all they had. I had a the rigatoni special. There was nothing special about it; it was noodles in a lackluster marinara sauce. The portion size was decent but I didn't end up taking home my leftovers.
google avatar

Katie S.

Yelp
Our dinner was amazing from the food to the service! We had Lucia as a server and she was so helpful best! The new bartender, Jason was great too he made our drinks so delicious. They both made us feel so welcome. We will definitely be back to try other great dishes.
google avatar

Yelp
Had a great dinner last night at Gallo Nero! The espresso martinis were amazing, not too sweet or too much coffee, the eggplant parmigiana was a huge portion and will make great left overs. The restaurant wasn't too loud and the waitstaff was very friendly. We were there for about four hours and had a lovely time.

Chelsey D.

Yelp
Me and my boyfriend went this past Sunday and there was only one waiter (not knocking that) but we were probably one of the first people sat on our row. He came up to us and immediately took our order. We waited over 50 minutes. Other people got sat after us and they got their food promptly. The host came up to us saying they were backed up but it doesnt make much sense to me when we were one of the first to sit but the last to get any food. We ordered drinks and an appetizer and didnt even get that first. They gave my boyfriend a free drink and poured us a little extra wine but it was not really worth it....After we got our food, I asked for lemon ..never got that: so we pretty much just ate, paid, and then left immediately

Allison F.

Yelp
I love this place! It's a local Italian spot with good pasta and pizza options. They are always friendly and you can count on a good meal. I haven't tried too many items in the menu but I like the trio that you can try several pastas on. My boyfriend got the chicken Parmesan and the chicken was a little undercooked which is why I gave 4 stars. We both agreed we would come back

James D.

Yelp
To start, we will continue to order from here. The entrees and salads are very good. Our disappointment exists solely in the cheese stick appetizers - do not order. Used to be our favorite in Dallas. Not sure when or why they switched. Happened maybe 3 months ago. They are terrible now. Gave them 3 attempts and unfortunately it wasn't a one-off. They are just truly terrible now. Again, we enjoy the rest of the food. Would encourage you to try this place. This is simply to try and save you from the cheese sticks. Pickup from Walmart and bake yourself... you'll be happier in the end.

Yelp
Every time I come to Gallo Nero, I'm met with pleasant service and outstanding food! We just came and the manager greeted us as soon as we walked in and gave us options on where we wanted to seat which we loved. Our server was very attentive as well.
google avatar

Vivien H.

Yelp
This review is only for the atmosphere and tasty drinks and very attentive service. We were just cruising around the area, was a hot day so we needed some beverages :) We like the place and decided to try it out, sat outside, was approached by a nice fella who actually helped us 3 days in a row. Haha We just like it so much we had to come back. Second day he remembered our drinks and made them very strong and tasty too. I had a cucumber martini , friend had espresso Martini. We were chatting with other employees as well and everyone was very pleasant. Next time we are around we might try some food. Keep up the hard work guys! You rock :)

Brooklin B.

Yelp
Giving two stars because the server was so sweet and great! But we should have known when we walked in on a Friday night at 7 on Greenville and it was super empty, that something was wrong. I was craving chicken piccata, and unfortunately this was the worst I have ever had. The chicken tasted like reheated frozen pre-cooked chicken, and was disgustingly pale and rubbery. I took two bites and couldn't choke any more down. In addition, for the food quality, it is criminally overpriced.

Dagmar c.

Yelp
We attended for 50% off wine Wednesday. Lucia served us and it was fantastic. She was tentative and frequently checked in to make sure we were OK. The food was tasty and well cooked. We had the Veal Parm and the Veal Piccata - both were excellent. The patio was beautiful to people watch.

weleca s.

Yelp
I had the best experience while dining here at Gallo Nero. The service was nothing short of great! The waitress by the name of Lisa was very warm and welcoming. The food was absolutely delicious and the portions are large enough to share. If you're looking for great Italian food that's reasonably priced and that has a welcoming atmosphere and great attentive service definitely go to Gallo Nero

Hannah M.

Yelp
It was really good! I'd only give a lower review because they told us the bread machine was broken and they were out of most desserts... kinda lame for a date night out at an Italian place. The food we did have was great though!

Idalisa R.

Yelp
Been here a handful of times and always have had a good experience, until last night. We stopped by and got sat outside per request. We received menus and no other service for 30 minutes until we decided to leave. Restaurant was not busy.
google avatar

Toni S.

Yelp
All I have to say is Lobster Ravioli!! Get it! The vodka sauce is on point! I only have good things to say about it!
google avatar

Jasmine W.

Yelp
This is my fourth visit to Gallo Nero. I fell in love with their three-cheese manicotti the first time I ate there. It was so good that whenever I thought of it, I could still taste it. I just tasted their pizza, it was alright. For the time being, I can only say that Dallas had more and nicer pizzas. Additionally, I'm worried that there aren't many parking spots, especially on weekends. Although a little cramped, the atmosphere is still beautiful, and the service is excellent.
google avatar

Bridget B.

Yelp
Came for drinks on a Sunday & the place was half empty. Told we couldn't sit at the bar because there wasn't a bartender. We didn't mind and agreed to sit at a table but were no one could make us a drink because the host was under age. No one was apologetic or hospitable.
google avatar

Caroline A.

Yelp
Really enjoyed this place. Came on Wednesday night and it was pretty busy. I could tell they were very understaffed but the waitresses were attentive. The phones were ringing off the hook as well as Uber eats drivers stacked up but the staff handled it well. The food didn't take as long to get and it was hot so I enjoyed that. I got Frutti De Mare with mussels, shrimp, clams and scallops in spicy marinara sauce. I give it a 7/10 the marinara sauce was watery which I didn't like and I thought the scallops would be bigger but overall I enjoyed the meal. It comes with warm bread that is tasty as well.
google avatar

Brian F.

Yelp
Needing a pizza, came here as well rated restaurant. From a pizza standpoint, it let me down. The pizza was undercooked and soggy in the middle. The taste was fine and I didn't need to eat a whole pizza anyway, but bad texture. Additionally, there is no beer on tap and not a wide selection in general. Disappointing. I suspect the regular menu items are impressive, but I'll skip the pizza.
google avatar

Roma B.

Yelp
Went here for lunch on Saturday. Love their outdoor seating. Service was quick and they have a reserved parking lot next to the restaurant. Waiter brought out free bread for the table. Ordered the stuffed mushrooms (stuffed with clam meat), eggplant parmigiana, and shrimp cremor. The stuffed mushrooms were AMAZING! The sauce was flavorful and rich, great to dip the bread in. We were pretty stuffed after it and barely had room for the main dishes. The shrimp cremor was rich as well and the shrimp pieces were huge. The eggplant parmigiana was disappointing, the eggplant was soggy and sour, not worth paying for.
google avatar

Trina W.

Yelp
Two words...Chicken Parmigiana. I have had it delivered to my apartment and it was just as good as when I dine in. I'm not really a fan of most "red sauces" but this sauce is *muah* perfecto! The portions are huge. I normally make 2-3 meals out of whatever I order. Attentive staff make the experience of dining in even better. There is a small parking lot next to the building reserved for customers only as well which is a major plus
google avatar

Brian S.

Yelp
Food can be alright. I very order from take out has missed something. Like chicken from a chicken Cesar salad. And the one time I went there I had the most overcooked chicken parm of all time
google avatar

Christina B.

Yelp
The reason you come to Gallo Nero is to come into an inviting space, get kind service, and plates of saucy goodness! The lighting is gentle, the booths are comfy, and the menu has everything you'd want. Not to mention you are in lower Greenville; the hot spot any day of the week in Dallas. Free parking right next to the restaurant, their very own parking lot. No dress code, no long wait, and with reservations, you can sit upstairs in the loft. Order an espresso martini, you wont forget it. I love the bruschetta, not too heavy and looks fancy, or I start with a pizza as an app... Chicken Rigatoni Vodka or Shrimp Scampi With Sea scallops... Geez! Don't forget dessert. Too many to choose from, served chilled and quick.
google avatar

Hollie R.

Yelp
Great service! Our waitress was super nice and everything was speedy. Loved the free bread with the meal. Chicken Piccata was pretty good.

Yelp
BEST ITALIAN FOOD IN DALLAS. If I could give this place 10 stars, I would. My husband and I visited on a Friday evening. We got seated, was shown to a nice corner booth, and served ice cold water immediately. *Bonus points!* I'll make it short and sweet. Soft warm bread in a basket, while watching fishes swim in an aquatic wonderland, sipping on red wine, makes you wonder if you've died and gone to heaven. Top it all off with the BEST PIZZA EVER. Trust me, I've tried many many pizzas over the years and this one seriously blows my mind. I swear I could smell it cooking in the oven. Fresh toppings and a thin crispy crust that melts in your mouth. Oh, and you can't beat the price!! I ordered a 10" that could have easily been split with another person. As if all the food didn't speak for itself, our server Artor was calm, knowledgeable, and respectful. The whole staff had a good vibe as well as the dark, yet trendy atmosphere. There is also an outdoor patio, an upstairs, and private party room in the back. I almost didn't want to share this good find, since I want it to be our secret place on the ever growing Greenville Ave., but seriously if you are feeling Italian, I highly recommend eating here. The name may sound a little funny (pronounced "gal*oh neer*oh"), but rest assured that we will absolutely be back!!
google avatar

Marc F.

Yelp
Their pasta is really good. But sometimes they're inconsistent, sometimes you get bigger portions or creamier sauce but still good. Guess depends on who's cooking that day/night. The rigatoni vodka is the best.

M M.

Yelp
Ambiance is nice, service was alright but they were packed so I understand. Food was bad, I would stick to pizza.
google avatar

Diana D.

Yelp
Now I remember why I haven't been back in several years...the food isn't very good! The Chicken Marsala seemed to be pre-cooked chicken, mushrooms and pasta tossed in a watery sauce with just a hint of Marsala wine flavor. It's like they aren't even trying.

Rickie S.

Yelp
Today was now my second time coming here and I can honestly say I don't think I'll be returning anytime soon. When you walk into the restaurant it is very nice aesthetically. Nice bar area with upstairs seating. Service was decent, waiter forgot to ask half the table for drinks and ask for a few other things that we didn't received. When food came in to play is there they really lost me. Everything that I have tried here including pizza, 3 different pastas, and a Stromboli have all been very bland. I will say pricing here is cheaper than most other places of similar style but still not worth it
google avatar

Taylor K.

Yelp
Really disappointed after seeing so many great reviews here. The food was very disappointing; no flavor, not melted enough and the meat tasted old and tough. The service was great but I'd stick to pizza if you're coming here. Reviews are way over rated for this place.

Yelp
This is NOT a positive review. *****(Corrected my spelling and grammar from the one I did from my phone)***** However, the owner should not receive a lower rating because of 1 bad staff member. The server. who was NOT very good at his job, conveniently did NOT mention that the gratuity was included on 6 or more people... so me trying to be a nice guy (before I learned it was included)I gave him 25% on my check...but then I noticed my friend's meal ( he's 80 so I was guiding him through the process) was grossly overpriced and THAT is when the waiter mentioned it.. the server then had the audacity to say " it's mentioned on the menu". However, the online menu does not... AND this dude actually directed us to the tip section on the screen on the handheld card reader.. he had plenty of opportunities to tell us the TIP WAS ALREADY INCLUDED... but he didn't. This is a less than honest way of earning tips. The food was delicious.
