The 18 Best Restaurants in Vorarlberg, Austria | Eater

"Need a bottle of prosecco? Looking for a bunch of freshly picked tulips and roses for that special someone you met on the slopes? Need a decent pizza in Vorarlberg? Ellen Nenning and Andreas Mennel have turned a traditional gasthof (inn) in a 17th-century building in Bezau into a mixed-used jack of all trades, including a designer boutique, flower shop, and 58-suite hotel with eye-popping decor that Barbie couldn’t resist. The three-story concept also features a wine bar that operates on the honor system (grab your bottle from the cellar, pay for it online, and enjoy it in one of the hotel’s public spaces), as well as some pretty spectacular pizzas; pies come with all the Italian trimmings you’d expect across the border like truffles, prosciutto, and fior di latte. Try the thin-crust 1648 pizza, topped with local bacon, bergkäse (mountain cheese), and fresh tomato." - Michelle Tchea

Amazing ambiance, delicious food, and friendly hostesses. I am not a native German speaker (nor proficient with the Vorarlberg dialect), but the ordering process was easy enough. We chose our own table and filled out a sheet with the pizzas that we wanted and gave it to the hostess. We took bottled drinks from a large ice bucket and noted them town on a slip that was provided at the table. They brought the pizza to our table which was baked in their large Neopolitan oven. I got the "1648" which had Bergkäse and Speck (see photo) and was outstanding with super-thin chewy crust. After we finished, we brought the slip down to the cashier with everything we ordered (including some pottery that was on display) and paid for it there. We are not wine drinkers, but they had a massive collection which I'm sure was great. There are three floors accessed by a spiral staircase, and the single bathroom was on the top floor. It was not obvious how to lock the door - there is a bolt on a shelf near the door which you insert into the latch.

Interesting concept that requires a bit of refinement, in my opinion. The pizzas are yummy and there’s lots of wine to choose from. The self-service bits are a bit odd as one basically has to prep one’s table alone, grab our own drinks, and the one salad comes in a takeaway box, which is a shame because the salad is actually tasty, so why downgrade it to a box when eating at the restaurant? Also… they had 0 baby chairs and said the hotel didn’t have them either. Very hard to believe. Other than that the place has a nice warm atmosphere!

We stayed six nights in Bezau and checking out GAMS 1648 is a must. The atmosphere, deco and services are tops. We have had a bottle of ET 2018 Shiraz - served decanted it would have been better. Highly recommend 👌

The pizza and salads are very good. The wine I was offered was very good. The ambience is very good. The service concept is weird. There are lots of staff standing around, instructing the guests how to serve themselves. The guests have to do nearly everything except serving pizza and cleaning up. Want cutlery or a glass - go and find it. Why are salads served for in-house guests in takeaway containers ( the salad was good) Strange that no baby chairs were available or could be found for us in the hotel. Management should rethink the service concept. We’ve been a few times and will probably return, but the experience could be so much better…

Hip little coffee and wine shop in Bezau, we had a beer, coffee, and dessert which were very good. They serve pizza too which smelled great but we didn't try. Very cool spot with lots of wine to try and plants for sale!

What a cool place. The menu is short and that's perfectly fine because the cook can actually make it to perfection. Antastic interior design, cool concept with wine self-service, very friendly staff. Would love to come back here...

What a nice and novel place, service was great and the people spoke good English. The pizzas were the best we've had outside of Italy. Not many vegetarian options but excellent quality with nicely done bases. The tiramisu was good and not expensive. Not the cheapest place but ok for Austria. It's a wine seller primarily (you get a free taster when you arrive) and they have lots of choice. I really liked the music they played but that's a personal choice; anywhere that includes a Petula Clarke track is cool with me.
