The Best Restaurants In Humboldt Park

"With exposed brick walls and a large wooden bar, Gaoku looks like a typical local watering hole. But unlike the usual temples of Old Style and Malört, this bar has fantastic Japanese-Thai dishes and drinks. The menu is full of hits like fragrant tom kha-inspired scallops with coconut dashi, spicy khao soi ramen, and buttery grilled tiger prawns with a creamy motoyaki sauce. Throw in some refreshing cocktails like a shiso-tinged margarita or fruity wakamomo splash, plus a summer patio, and you have a great spot for a weekend lunch, dinner, or drinks before a show at the California Clipper across the street. Gaoku - Review - Humboldt Park - Chicago - The Infatuation

"You never know you need khao soi with ramen noodles and karaage, until you do. This was the epiphany we had at Gaoku, a unique Humboldt Park izakaya with an impressive fusion of Japanese-Thai dishes, ingredients, and flavors. It’s equally exciting for a date, or when you’re hungover at 1pm on a Saturday and the only company you want is that life-giving bowl of soup. photo credit: Kim Kovacik photo credit: Kim Kovacik photo credit: Kim Kovacik Gaoku looks like someone converted a warehouse loft into a bar, and depending on when you’re here, the space takes on a different character. Their weekend-only lunch is calmer with only a few people eating rich khao soi ramen or saucy rice bowls with crispy pork belly (both are lunch menu exclusives). Nights are more active as tables of friends throwback fruity wakamomo smashes and couples at the bar trade bites of excellent tom kha-inspired scallops before a show at the California Clipper across the street. The tall red curtains draped across the windows at Gaoku make the space more intimate in the evening, as a playlist reminds everyone that "Electric Feel" still hits even though 2010s flannels might not. photo credit: Kim Kovacik The menu does have some missteps, like a mushy oyster omelet or an overly rich miso hot buttered rum. And since most of the small plates are indeed small and hover around $20-30, the bill can easily add up. But Gaoku’s take on fusion drinks and bar snacks is fresh and very welcomed. In a city that's especially crowded with stuffy cocktail lounges and musty dives where Old Style is religion, there’s nothing quite like Gaoku. Food Rundown photo credit: Kim Kovacik Hotate Scallops This plate of little bivalves swimming in a tom kha-inspired dashi is our favorite dish from the menu’s cold section. A dollop of caviar complements the sweet, tender scallops, while the coconut sauce gets an exciting dash of spice from chili oil. photo credit: Kim Kovacik Akami These slices of lean tuna are fantastic, with a mix of salty, umami, and slight sweetness from the white truffle oil and soy sauce. But since there are only three slices, the fun is over pretty quickly. Make sure to savor each bite. photo credit: Kim Kovacik Sakura Pork Each slice of pork shoulder has a fatty richness and a pleasant charred flavor after spending some time on a charcoal grill. The meat rests in a pool of roasted rice ponzu that’s sweet, nutty, and gets a burst of tartness from pickled shallots. photo credit: Kim Kovacik Tora Ebi Like the pork, these chunky tiger prawns get a nice smokiness from hanging out on the charcoal grill. The meat has an excellent combination of sweetness and char with additional layers of flavor from a tangy, creamy motoyaki sauce and a sprinkling of peppery Thai spices. photo credit: Kim Kovacik Crispy Charshu Mini Don This side dish with rice and crispy pork belly resting in a sweet and tart white peach sauce is a fantastic lunch-exclusive. But we have two dish-related wishes because we want more of it: upgrade it to full-on main entree status and size, and make it available for dinner. photo credit: Kim Kovacik Khao Soi Ramen Another lunch-only dish that we wish stuck around for dinner. The ramen noodles subbing for the usual flat ones in khao soi are pleasantly chewy, and carry up the coconutty and slightly spicy curry broth with each slurp. The karaage on top is juicy and crispy, just make sure to eat them quickly before they get soggy. photo credit: Kim Kovacik Drinks The drinks here have something for everyone, whether you want something simple or something complex that triggers an eyebrow-raise full of intrigue. For some easy sipping, check out the wakamomo smash (garnished with a juicy baby peach) or Gaoku’s take on a margarita with shiso. If you like your cocktails savory, the coconutty and spiced tom khalada or MSG-punched highball with ginger both have a little bit of a salty kick." - John Ringor

Tried this place as it was recommended by a friend, and it was amazing! The cocktails were inventive and delicious, and the food, was SO good! The fish was so tender fresh and delicious! Even the rice was so sticky and great I could’ve made a meal of it. I feel like this place is a current hidden gem that once the word gets out, will be booked up months in advance with good reason. Go here tonight!

This place was amazing! The drinks were delicious and the best food I've had in a very long time!! I had the tuna hand rolls, and I honestly can't remember what the other hand roll was. But they were both delicious!! You could definitely taste how fresh the fish was! I also had the curry ramen noodles. That was very good as well, it would be really nice to eat that in the winter. It just felt like a nice hug! The staff was wonderful too, everyone who works there really cares about giving you the best experience. Come to this place as much as you can before you can't get a reservation!

Celebrated my boyfriend’s birthday here. The food was very unique and delicious! We ordered Tiger Prown, Scallop, Sashimi platter, mini crisp port Don, Thai curry ramen, matcha tiramisu and mochi, and three drinks. Everything was great. The owner is very friendly too, he gave us the matcha tiramisu and offered birthday shots for us and drank with us!! The next time we are gonna try something else!

Google
just left from having my birthday dinner here and knew I had to leave a review - it was that good! we ordered about 10 items across the menu (some pictured, not all) and enjoyed each one. the stand outs for us were the scallops and the miso tuna - I don't remember the exact names of the dishes, but honestly it doesn't seem like you could go wrong with any dish here. our cocktails, the old cuban and the sour wakamomo, were also very smooth and balanced. we opted for more sushi over dessert, but the tamago could've been on the dessert menu itself. it had the texture (and almost the taste) of spekkoek, a thin layer cake, which means it wasn't soggy at ALL - a common issue with tamago elsewhere. even though we went for a special occasion and ordered accordingly, the menu was very accessible and had more affordable options for a regular meal. the atmosphere was refined but laid back, a bit dark but not too loud, just really comfortable for any type of outing. the server, bartender, and (I believe?) chef/owner were all kind and accommodating. before now, I would have said the best sushi in chicago was at 312 fish market or aji, but gaoku easily ranks alongside them. I'll return for sure!

Google
GaoKu! If you haven’t been here yet GaoKu is absolutely fantastic. The staff is some of the best in the city, as well as the owner alike. From their traditional Japanese apps, to the elite nigiri and sashimi options, they truly are my go to in the genre. Cocktails are incredible as well. They are coming up on 1 year open, and there really is no reason as to why you haven’t been yet! There’s built in fun on this corner with the clipper across the street. Make a night of it and go enjoy this gem!

Wow! We loved it. The atmosphere is great. The staff was attentive and kind. We ordered a Shirley Temple for our daughter and the mixologist came to the table himself to explain his take on the drink, which was special (and so tasty!) We met one of the owners and it was nice to discuss aspects of the menu with him. We knew that we were in for a treat when the house salad was served with ginger shaved ice; all of the food had incredible precision and depth. We chose the Nigiri set menu, the tuna nigiri, and Thai Hor Mak. It was delicious. The sushi was rich and fresh. We all shared the mochi and matcha tiramisu for dessert and loved it. Every dish had a thoughtful presentation. Every dish was perfect. We will definitely be back for more.

Google
The food is delicious! The tuna was definitely on my top 3 I have ever had. I'll be back to try other things.

Google
The food was absolutely delicious!! The lavender cocktail was so smooth and had so much depth. We ordered the tuna sashimi, fatty salmon nigiri, seared prawns, shrimp hand roll, and matcha tiramisu which was so light and delicious. The service was also outstanding.

Yelp
The sushi is some of the best in the area, all the ingredients are fresh, the staff is friendly and provided us with a very enjoyable experience. I highly recommend all sushi-lovers give this place a try! Gaoku Izakaya is definitely one of the best sushi joints in the Chicagoland area.

Yelp
GAOKU GETS SLEPT ON!! This is hands down one of the best restaurants in the neighborhood, and for some reason it seems to be slept on by the community. The happy hour is bomb (half priced hand rolls and discounted cocktails) and the food itself is a refined Izakaya experience you can't get anywhere else in the area. Yes it's pricey but no more than the trendier establishments in the area. I think this business could really use the support - I would really hate to lose a gem like this in the neighborhood. The owner even came over to our table once with free mezcal shots! Hoping to try it out again before summer ends so I can have cocktails on the patio. Do yourself a favor and support this delicious local spot.

Yelp
Gaoku was fun! Was in recently to catch up with a friend who spent the last couple of weeks in Japan. Another great addition to the Humboldt Park neighborhood, their take on hand rolls was really unqiue and interesting. They treat hand rolls like seaweed wrapped tacos, and the flavor of the spicy tuna and tempura shrimp were notable standouts. The hamachi was one I was less crazy about just due to flavor profile, but also I was feeling adventourous when I visited. But before that, we got an order of Oysters and Sakura Pork which were quite dressed up and the Pork serving as a clear favorite! We also ordered a round of miso soups for the table which were excellent! Lastly, I will absolutely be back for some more of the cocktails on the menu as I did have the humboldt afternoon, which is MALORT-based and so tasty. One funny thing was our server who told us that she was five shots in, which was idk kind of weird. Lastly, the inside is really sexy and dark and an absolute for date night!

Yelp
We went for the Thursday night hand roll deals. Everything tasted so fresh and flavorful. Very cozy vibe inside, and no wait. The service was also quick and attentive.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious food at GaoKu. The goodness--as well as service quality-- is consistent visit after visit. I've brought many friends here and none of them have been disappointed with Gaoku. Wonderful cocktails can be had, too! Kudos to their bar.

Yelp
Came for dinner on a Thursday. At first, we thought we were interrupting a private event, but we were good. There was just 1 employee so service was very slow. Our food was pretty tasty and the matcha tiramisu was really cool.

Yelp
The food is phenomenal. Some of the best fish I've had in ages and reminiscent of what you can regularly get on the west coast. Our lower rating was because we were a party of 4 and one person's food order was not put in and by the time they realized it took another 20+ min to get it and we tried to pick at our food to wait for the last plate. All the rest of us were done by the time the sushi came out. We understood mistakes happen, but the waiter didn't seem to be apologetic and we were surprised there didn't seem to be any urgency. This isn't a place we will visit again as much as we loved our food, but this is a spendier meal (appropriately priced) and having such a rough service experience makes it less worthwhile. FYI They do include a note in the front of the menu about the automatic 20% gratuity which we expected to pay, but the Toast Tab machine defaults to adding ANOTHER 20% on top of that. You have to manually remove it.

Yelp
Stumbled upon this place while in the area catching up with friends at a local bar. We ended up basically having dinner here. It was during early in the week, maybe Monday or Tuesday. The place was empty (a group of people had just walked out before we walked in). We were served by Emmeline. She was nice and a little quirky. We were given some complimentary small drinks to start off which was a nice gesture. We ordered the chicken karaage which I found surprisingly larger as an appetizer and not bad for the price point. The hamachi Kama was not what we were expecting but it was ok. We ordered all drinks each plus a plate of fresh nigiri to chose from and found it to be fairly fresh and good. The bill was quite expensive, especially for the area, so I'd keep that in mind.

Yelp
Dude. Best place I've eaten in Chicago in a while!!! Everything was exceptional - no joke! We had a lot of diff things but a few highlights: - wakamono sour: literally my idea of a PERFECT cocktail! It's like a yuzu sour - so freakin good. - the salmon and tuna hand rolls: these are worth every penny and alone will be the reason I come back over and over again! - chirashi don: not a thing I normally order but all the fish was cut so thick and was so tasty!! Plus they make their own tamago and it's like eating a soufflé dessert!! - the khao soi ramen: best fusion of Thai and Japanese ever! Spice was HOT and on point and it came with karaage chicken that was crispy and tender and amazing Please come here!!! Best food ever!! And love the owners too!! Maru was so nice and the chef is one of faves! The vibe is also amazing - really chill.

Deborah C.

Yelp
If you want top shelf sushi this is your place! Hands down the best sushi Ive ever had! we did the nigiri chefs pick and it was just outstanding- as well as scallops in coconut lemongrass, then Toro and soft shell crab rolls! My cocktails were mixed perfectly. You can spend a lot or you can do a ramen bowl or rice bowls. Casual, not stuffy, quiet, and ok parking. It was my 2 nd time being there and I am definitely going back!

Yelp
This restaurant was absolutely unbelievable. My wife and I eat at every new sushi and izakaya place that pops up in Chicago. The harder it is to get a reservation the more determined we are to try it. This new Izakaya joint is truly remarkable, is fairly easy to get a table for now, and I hope that the Michelin folks visit it soon. They are doing very innovative changes to traditional Iazakaya dishes. Karaage chicken toasted in yellow Thai Curry with Red curry paste dip. Grilled hamachi with chimichurri. Internationally imported sashimi selections for extremely reasonable prices, at least for now. Very high end cocktail making that will stand next to the best cocktails in West Loop and The Loop. This was my wife's second time here and she insisted I try it. So glad I did and we'll be coming back for more. The service was impeccable. Incredibly friendly and fully knowledgeable of the menu.

Yelp
The food was amazing! Granted I only had the ramen but it's so worth it. The service was excellent. The waiter took the time to go over the menu and make suggestions. Cute vibe! Would definitely recommend and come back for more

Yelp
Extremely long wait time. This is probably one of my worst experiences so far. Even with this kind of service, they still demand a mandatory tip

Yelp
Love this place. It's a hidden gem. Definitely wasn't expecting to see such creative and delicious cocktails here - it was an unexpected surprise to find what I believe to be one of the best mixology programs in all of Chicago. The miso hot buttered rum is amazing - and anyone who says the miso flavor is too much obviously prefers bland, boring drinks. It's so good I could have it year-round. Marco was friendly and helpful, taking great care of us both times that we visited. Food-wise, I really like the karaage chicken and the sakura pork salad. My partner liked his chirashi-don. If this place was in our neighborhood, we'd definitely be regulars.
google avatar

Cecilia X.

Yelp
this place was great but definitely on the pricier end. it reminds me of ikigai but more expensive and better quality. my favorite thing we got was the Sakura pork, and my partners favorite was the mackerel. the chirashi don was very fresh and so were the scallops. we were the only people eating dinner when we went which was strange but the bar was full. I got a tom khalada and I really liked it.

Yelp
A must! Our favorite were the hand rolls, ramen, and the tiramisu! Service is amazing with everyone super nice and and food came out super quick. Great spot for friends dinner or even a romantic night! Also some of the best drinks in the city!

Zitong W.

Yelp
Not very authentic Japanese food, but pretty good in taste! good quality for fish and oyster! Nice to have a drink though.
google avatar

Shoshana C.

Yelp
Amazing seafood! Obsessed with the oysters and the SCALLOPS! Wished that the pork dish came with a carb to eat it with. Great dessert, very unique drinks especially if you like dark liquors! Great place to share plates

Yang L.

Yelp
Awesome, intimate spot for small bites and great drinks. Really enjoyed the Sakura Pork (which we were redirected to as they had sold out of the Karaage). The omakase was a very surprisingly awesome value for the quality. Looking forward to the next time we drop in already!

Anthony O.

Yelp
As expected Chef Oni and the crew delivered! From scheduling the dinner all the way through the end, the care, communication, service, food and drinks was off the charts! The atmosphere was perfect and at one point the smell of charcoal on tuna brought me back to Japan. This is why we go back over and over again and bring more people! Like no other...

Haru I.

Yelp
We had pork salad appetizer and chirashi sushi for lunch on Saturday - the sashimi was fresh, varied and delicious. The Asian-style pork salad was also tasty.

Greg N.

Yelp
Really nice ambiance which includes seated tables and a large bar area. Tom Khalada and tuna tartare were incredible!!!

Jeff S.

Yelp
wonderful food and service. drinks are top notch. nice atmosphere and that tuna is amazing. as is the oyster omelette!
