Shalimar Diner in Queens Has Closed After 45 Years - Eater NY

"And other classic diners around the city have been unable to survive the current restaurant climate either — recent months have seen the closures of Silver Spurs, Garden Grill, and Georgia Diner." - Stefanie Tuder

An Ode to My Favorite Greasy Spoon | Eater

"A little greasy-spoon diner a few blocks from the writer's apartment that has been a favorite for nearly 12 years and is slated to close on February 25. It's described as a perfect diner — over-easy eggs, the club sandwich, fries, spinach pie, and Greek salad are all singled out — and a place that fills with elderly couples after church alongside a mix of families, hipsters, and longtime neighbors. The atmosphere pairs a TV showing local news above a fridge case of layer cakes with the nonstop drum of delivery orders being taken and called out to short-order cooks; staff know regulars' names and preferences (even grabbing Splenda for coffee) and have shown personal kindness, including slipping a $20 under a newborn's foot as an Easter gift. The writer has had hundreds of meals there and relied on its familiarity during a time of neighborhood transitions." - Amanda Kludt

My daughter had salmonella poisoning at the Mothers Day brunch , not only denied it but so did the health department. Guess who is friends! Too much to type , ended up the hospital because of severity under quarantine had to cancel her bachelorette party, lost the money. Rebooked it only to have her relapse - in the hospital again as I type this- another trip cancelled - wedding in 18 days . We can only hope it clears her system . Nothing from you expect the offer of a prayer ???!!!! Sorry , not good enough . And yes the Dr confirmed it was from poultry - the one chicken wing she ate at your restaurant. Thanks for reaching out with concern that you put a young woman in the hospital, oh wait - you didn’t !!!! Thank you to the amazing nurses who decked out her hospital room to cheer her up

I sat outside in a beautiful garden. The food was delicious. The hot rolls were so good and the apple crisp with ice cream was the perfect way to top off this delicious lunch. I will be back

My wife and I have gone here over many decades. We got engaged here, almost 25 years ago. The food was outstanding including the sample platter of appetizers. The salmon and my lamb were prepared wonderfully. We had the lunch menu. Service was perfect. We moved so we don’t get there as often as we would like. Loved it.

Today I had my daughter's bridal shower & it couldn't have been more perfect! The patio was beautiful, food was incredible & the staff was exceptional! They were attentive to every detail & we all enjoyed the day! Thank you so much! Would highly recommend having your events here!

Google
Had my friend’s bridal shower outdoors on the patio today and the food, service and atmosphere EXCEEDED our expectations. When it started down pouring at the end of our party the staff went out of their way to assist with cleaning, packing the car with items and went as far as to follow us around with umbrellas as we walked through the rain. They were AMAZING. Everything about this place is 10/10.

Garden Grill had an Oktoberfest menu during the Fall, so we've stopped by to try out traditional German dishes like the Potato Pancake and Schnitzel. The Schnitzel was thinly breaded and tender - perfect to our liking! Service was fast and friendly. Great restaurant with delicious food.

This was our first visit to the Garden Grill restaurant. The establishment is housed in a beautifully preserved historic home, with decor that matches the charming, old-world ambiance. The tables are elegantly set with crisp linen tablecloths and napkins. As you enter, there is an inviting bar, and a cozy upstairs catering room. The menu offers a nice selection of dishes. The food was excellent - the Alla Vodka Pasta had a delightful hint of rosemary. The layout features multiple intimate dining rooms, creating a cozy, comfortable atmosphere.

Yelp
Cute place, lots of nooks and crannies filled with tables. We felt that the waitress could of checked in on our table more often. The place was not busy during lunch. Food was dropped and then no return, some of the food as cold. Food had good portions.

Yelp
The Sunday brunch has a lot to be desired! Arrived @ noon, the buffet style entrees were not fresh, sausages tuff, fatty bacon, stale eggs & sweets were sub par, supermarket grade. The refill libations were not freshened up, melted cubes & reused oranges, sad.. not enough selection.... The only highlight was the fresh pancakes.... There could have been French toast, fresh waffles etc. basically this brunch was very limited for the cost

Yelp
Beautiful restaurant inside and out, efficient service with delicious food and cocktails. We had a party of 11, the kitchen and the waiter handled it with ease. This restaurant is completely handicapped accessible. Delightful I recommend this restaurant.

Yelp
$65 per adult for brunch buffet I barely understand but I have nothing to say... However, same price for 10yrs old kids who only eat some pasta and fries, it's unbelievable!!

Yelp
Went with a friend for relaxing lunch. Service was attentive. We enjoyed a quiet space and food was good.

Yelp
Nicely decorated, cute place, made a reservation on a weekday for lunch time. Place was empty which was not surprising nor a negative remark towards the establishment, as I imagine their profits come from weekends/and dinner service. Not a problem. Seated quickly, attentive service, friendly waiter, but was not impressed with the food. The person I was with ordered the chicken Luciano I believe it was called, I ordered the "short rib" panini. Asked for no horseradish sauce, and if they could leave out mushrooms, was told if I didn't want mushrooms then I wouldn't get grilled onions as they are prepared together. Didn't make much sense but alright. Sandwich was reduced to meat bread and cheese, figured it would be ok and tasty as it was short rib. It was not short rib. Sandwich arrived, and the waiter brought me a side of raw red onion as he could sense my disappointment after being told no grilled onions were possible due to the modification. It was a nice gesture and I like raw onion so no problem. The sandwich came with sauce, that I asked to be omitted. I sent it back, it returned quickly. First bite, and immediately the taste registered as under seasoned, gamey, bland beef. Not tender short rib, it resembled chuck roast. Shaved off a bone, and under seasoned. I ask for a side of bbq sauce and drenched the half I ate in it, just to get thru the meal without being too difficult as I was hungry and didn't want the person I was dining with to feel bad that I wasn't enjoying my meal. Overall, I was not impressed. I don't appreciate something being advertised as one thing and then being served another. Have had plenty of short ribs in my life, and the meat on that sandwich was not. I brought the left over half to my parents, my father ate it later in the day and had the same complaint. Bland under seasoned and gamey tasting. I would be willing to give this establishment another try as the ambience is nice, but I would not order that item again and encourage others not to.

Yelp
Beautiful, historic building with excellent food and service. I absolutely love the ambience.

Yelp
Reservations for 6 on Sunday 1pm 6-2-24. Unfortunately the service is horrendous. Not the first time eating here either. If you're going to have a bridal party at your establishment then Have the proper help. One table of 6 on the deck, 3 tables on the lower patio, waited 45 minutes just to get our drinks which were horribly made. Had to ask for menus, had to ask for bread, had to ask for plates, knives and forks. The Mojitos were terrible. We ordered drinks waited 20 minutes and they came out with just a Coke. food was mediocre. Hitler I've been to this establishment on a few occasions and only once was there proper help to be waited on . What a shame one meal came out drenched in a dressing that the server apparently spilled because they have put these little cups on the dinner plate and it ruined the whole meal. Tried to explain to the server but we don't think he understood or he was just ignoring us. On the bright side, the place is still pretty and clean. Even took one of the guests to the back room to show them the decor. Totally embarrassed for my guests as it was their first time there.

Yelp
Very pretty Victorian home with lots of charm in many rooms accommodating lots of groups. Live music in the bar, wine tasting & events. The Garden Grill is a Historic Landmark Circa 1873, established in 1993. With American classic homecooking. Very nice menu. We enjoyed our salad, calamari, fried raviolis, stuffed clams, chocolate mousse, pork chops and short ribs. Portions were generous, Service was fabulous. Lots of parking and a nice evening.

Yelp
Had lunch today at this quaint spot in Smithtown. The place is decorated for fall with pumpkins & cornstalks. We were seated in the small dining room & immediately felt we were in someone's dining room.We sat near the fireplace.I had the prime rib panini which was really sliced steak on ciabatta-no panini press-there was onions, mushrooms & the cheese was melted but it could have had more of a cheese pull. The other meal was an absolutely fantastic portabella mushroom with asparagus & roasted pepserved on a yummy brioche bun. I tasted both since we each had half. The "panini" was served with sweet potato fries which were warm at best..the portabella had a side salad. I would recommend this place but call a steak sandwich what it is & if that was prime rib it was sliced paper thin. We opted for no dessert tho apple strudel was a special.

Yelp
First of all, I wish Yelp had half star ratings.... Because I would've given Garden Grill a 3 1/2. It wasn't good enough to give a 4 but a 3 is a little low for the rating. I was torn between giving it a 3 or 4 but the service was the reason for the lower rating. It was a beautiful fall night and we wanted to eat outside. I've had Garden Grill on my radar for a while now since I live very close and I know they have a beautiful garden area outside. It wasn't busy on a Sunday night and we were sat at a nice table in the garden area. We started off with the pretzel and it was very good. Soft and fresh and the beer cheese was very good. My husband had to ask the waitress for a drink menu and she seemed taken back by his question which I found a little odd. I also had a french onion soup which was very good! Not too salty and the cheese was melted nicely on top with a little broil as well. I had the penne a la vodka for dinner and my husband had the short ribs. Both were just OK. I like pepper, but this was covered in black pepper! It must be in the sauce but my goodness, it was overpowering. The waitress was more of what I call an "order taker". Came over, took our appetizer order, never checked up on us. Took the dinner order, never checked up on us. Never got refills on our drinks and it took over 45 minutes to get our check. The hostess seemed to be the only one really working that night. We were not the only table asking her for help. She brought us to go boxes and our check. All in all, I would only go back for appetizers and drinks. It seems that during the summer, they have a beautiful outdoor bar area which I'd love to try. As for dinner, I think I'll skip that part, the service was just not good and the food was mediocre.

Yelp
I absolutely love this place, I've never had a bad meal. However this time they forgot our appetizer, no apology but they did take it off the check. Not exactly sure what happened but still enjoyed our entrees. I had the meatloaf and my husband had the duck, both were excellent. They have several different rooms so you get a different atmosphere in each one. This was my first time in the room with the fancy chandeliers and a fire place. I suggest they put that on at some point to give the room an even nicer ambiance. No matter what I will be coming back. Like I said never had a bad meal, and I even had leftovers for another night on my own. Definitely a good place to go for a nice romantic evening out.

Yelp
Went for Easter Dinner with our family. Encountered a chaotic scene at the entrance. Many parties with reservations were attempting to check-in with little success. It appeared that there were three hostesses, but they didn't seem to know what they were doing. Reservations were scribbled on many different pieces of loose paper. We were seated roughly 40 minutes after our reservation time. My seat looked directly into the very busy Men's Room. A hostess brought over 2 food menus and one drink menu and told us that there was a menu shortage and that our party of 10 would have to share. At this point I was very tempted to pick up our entire party and leave but where could we go with a party of this size on such short notice. Took another 10 minutes to get some bread and another 10 minutes until someone took our drink order. Appetizers and Main Courses were extremely slow to show up and everyone's meals did not arrive at the same time. We didn't complain but the party of 20 across from us was extremely upset and was very vocal. The one saving grace was the food. This was our first time coming to the Garden Grill and most likely our last.

Yelp
Made reservations for Mother's day a week in advance. Upon arrival, a huge line outside...everyone had reservations. Absolutely no organization, one young girl said not to check in, stay on line. Another young girl starts taking names randomly. I wound up fifth on the list, behind 4 families that arrived after me. Owner or manager are no where to be found. About 50 people left after eating in the 30 minutes I was waiting but no one from the line was taken in except 1 group of 5. We left after waiting 40 minutes with no answers about how much longer it would take. THANK YOU FOR RUINING MY WIFES MOTHERS DAY!

Yelp
We were a party of 10 for brunch on august 11. The brunch was a buffet. The food that should've been cold and on ice was room temperature and the food that should've been hot was also room temperature. Overall the food was mediocre at best and not worth the price

Yelp
Went to garden grill for the first time! The food was yummy, the waiter was a little slow in checking in on us and making sure we were ok.

Nicholas M.

Yelp
Coffee good tasting and good temperature. I don't even want to rate the service, because I've never been there before. But where there's a bar...there's a creep.

Carmela A.

Yelp
Delicious seafood bisque and shrimp risotto! Cozy and Great atmosphere too! Will definitely be back!

Yelp
The food sucked. It was overpriced and underwhelming. Your menu needs to cover more price points. Offering entrees at 2 price points is not good.

Yelp
Our 2nd visit tonight & the food was much better. Perfectly cooked & not as salty. We had the lamb chops, steak & chicken platter and sea bass. We were seated promptly upon arrival on the 1st floor near the bar. They had a awesome band playing tonight but it was extremely noisy & crowded. We could barely hear each other. The service was a 3 Star tonight. We waited an hour to be served our appetizers. We had to ask for bread & the waiter never came around with water. The Cocktails were great! Unfortunately It took a while to order a bottle of wine because the waiter never circled back to us. Desserts were delicious as well.

Yelp
First time back here in over 20 years. The place tripled in size with a warm cozy feeling. Sat at the bar with live music. Other friendly people all having a great time and enjoying the euphoric vibe. All of the staff were outstanding & outgoing. The bar server was awesome and the Food was on sport and super fresh. Looking forward to going back soon

Yelp
This is another place that I've driven past 100 times but stopped in to. We had a party of 6 and chose to sit outside: Atmosphere: We didn't go inside so I can only judge the outside. On a sunny summer day it was very shady, with colored canopies above the umbrellas, providing a good amount of shade. The tables are not on top of each other so even though it was crowded there was plenty of room. Service: Our server Anna did just fine in the crowded patio. Drinks were out in 5-10 minutes and food arrived without incident. Good efficient server. Food: Our table ran the gamut from Chicken Francaise to BBQ Ribs to Pasta to Salmon to Sauerbraten. Not one meal disappointed - everybody loved their dinners. Excellent job. Price: Nothing obnoxious - mostly in the $20's, just like most decent restaurants. The owner stopped by our table twice to see how things were going. He seems to take a real interest and appreciated our patronage. Will we come back? Hell Yes, and soon.

Yelp
The last time I was at Garden Grill was approximately 2 years ago, right before my father's passing. Would go with my parents and in-laws. They loved this place. I took a picture of our favorite table and I can vision my father enjoying his meal and sipping on his favorite martini. Returning here for brunch with work friends brought back bittersweet memories and I'm really glad I did. Brunch was excellent, an endless assortment of fresh and tasty salads, fruits, breads, hot and cold breakfast items, hot carving station, veggie and cheese trays and tons of desserts. Unlimited mimosas but I only had a few sips. I prefer not to drink at breakfast. Our room was cozy and comfortable. Service was outstanding. Staff was on top of everything and with a smile. It was wonderful to get together with my work buddies ( 4 retired). Brunch was approximately $36 plus tax and tip. A little expensive but I would do it again. Garden Grill is a Victorian House that has an elegant casual charm. Lovely bar that has live music on Friday and Saturday. I will warn you it does get loud. I'm very happy I got to go back to Garden Grill and share a great time with my awesome friends!

Yelp
This review will probably be updated after the next time we go. Please know this was my first experience at Garden Grill. The food was fabulous!! Very very delicious!! The service was awful. It was a quiet night only our table of 4 and one other table. The server was absent a lot of the night and it was awful service. But THE FOOD WAS SOOOOOOO GOOD!

Kristin C.

Yelp
If I could give zero stars for service, I would. The owner, Gloria, is an absolute unorganized mess. On Mother's Day and Christmas Eve we had reservations. Gloria has people getting up from their seats to move to other tables, WAY overbooked, and did I mention disgustingly unorganized? The line for Mother's Day was out the door intruding into the parking lot. Employees couldn't check people in for the reservations because Gloria wouldn't let her look at the reservation book. Not only all of that, but rude to her employees and stressing them OUT. I truly feel bad for the employees. She needs to retire and give her workers a break. Will never be going back unless Gloria decides to retire.

Susie H.

Yelp
We had 6pm reservations for Mother's Day, not only did it take 10 minutes of being unattended to but we waited an hour to be seated with two hungry little kids and my parents. The excuse was "we are understaffed", "we need to let the kitchen catch up", one employee told me she had been working almost 12 hours straight with no break! This sounds like a Management issue, not mine, not the employees', Management. Don't take reservations or seat guests when your service capabilities are maxed out. It's just greed at that point (and if not greed then...just stop running a business because it makes no sense). The food was okay but nothing impressive or worth it's cost. They were unable to accommodate allergies. They charged $20 for a kids meal chicken fingers & fries. It really is disgusting when you know you're being taken advantage of because you have no other option and aren't about to feed your kids a $50 steak. Service was terrible overall. The young man who was basically an "assistant waiter" was more helpful than anyone we encountered the whole night. We won't ever be going back which is a shame as it's pretty local to us.

Yelp
Wow seems like the folks over at the Garden Grill want to charge fine dining prices but have no other element of fine dining. I ordered a $47 ribeye that had an amazing description, herb crusted with a creamy horseradish sauce and other buzz words thrown in and when it came out I was in total shock. The plating was sloppy and it looked unappetizing off the bat. I could also see that every descriptive word used on the menu was missing. What I received was a ribeye that had absolutely no seasoning to it all. I'm questioning if it even had salt on it. To top it off, our waiter was never to be seen again after the food was dropped off. I even grabbed a menu again to check in disbelief on the lie I was sold on. I couldn't believe this is what I ordered and was never able to confirm with our waiter that this could possibly be the right dish. Once done with our meal I had to get our check from a bus lady and left promptly after that. After the dinner was done I had felt like I had paid for a fine dining experience but received absolutely no other notion of it. Bad meal, absent service and no hospitality. Can't imagine how this place will remain to stay open

Allison V.

Yelp
The service is terrible here. Not just service like showing up asking if you need anything, but also the manners of the servers and how forgetful they are. We asked for butter, and they brought butter to the table right next to us. They brought us our food, and didn't ask if we needed anything else, they left the food and ran. They brought us a new basket of bread, and when they served the food about 5 minutes later they took the full basket of bread. They didn't ask anything, they just did. No communication. And the restaurant was not full at all. The food is not so great. We had gotten the orecchiette and there were more canellini beans than pasta. There must have been 2 cups of beans. The parmigiana cheese they serve on the side has no taste. Won't come again.

Maria R.

Yelp
The food was horrible even the cappuccino was bad. The service was not good. Really not a good thing to say. A real waste of money McDonald is 100 times better.

Yelp

Yelp
Been here a few times now during COVID-19 and they're killing it with the outdoor set up. There is a copious amount of tables set up under umbrellas, near heaters, under industrial sized tents. It's one of the few places we've seen where the set up is in an actual backyard type space and not in a parking lot or out on the road. Staff is friendly and we've been coming because they bring in Southbound regularly which is a fun band (currently duo) that we enjoy listening to. The malbec is a bit thin; feel they need a better bottle on the menu. We enjoy the cab much more. The cheese sauce for the delicious Bavarian style pretzel was runny and thin the last time and lacking taste; definitely needs attention because the pretzel itself is perfect. We've enjoyed most of the food we've had other than these suggestions for improvement. Keep up the great work providing a safe outdoor space for people to dine and unwind in these unprecedented times!

Yelp
I want to apologize beforehand for this lengthy review, but I felt that everything needed to be said. I with a friend of mine this past Friday night to Garden Grill to celebrate Oktoberfest, Smithtown Restaurant Week and to see our friends Tom and Sal (2 of The Big Revival Band) sing. We were both looking forward to a good Oktoberfest meal which was on their price fix menu. When I made the reservation, I specifically stated we wanted to be seated where we can see and hear our friends sing and I specifically asked about the price fix Oktoberfest menu. The woman that took our reservation said she would not be there Friday but would make a note next to mine name (reservation) music. When we arrived at the restaurant, I gave my name and time of my reservation to the hostess who seemed extremely surprised. It didn't appear to be there. She was going to seat us in the dining room which is not what I requested. She then proceeded to sit us in the bar area which my friend and I had to squeeze through the bar at the main entrance to get to back bar for the music. Luckily no one was sitting where we had to walk past, otherwise we wouldn't have fit. She proceeded to sit us way in the back where we couldn't see anything. Told her we wanted another table and grudgingly she sat us at small round table with 3 chairs. It was ok we could see our friends and put out pocketbooks on the extra chair or so we thought, until she made me move my chair over and took away the 3rd chair leaving nowhere for our pocketbooks except the floor. Finally, she brought the menus and that's when I noticed the restaurant week price fix menu with some Oktoberfest dishes wasn't among them. The waitress came to take our drink order and after giving it to her I asked for the restaurant week price fix menu. She took so long in bringing us the drinks and the menu, that I asked the bus boy for one and was told I will check to see if there is one. When the bus boy come back with the menu, he told us that the manager said we cannot order from that menu and had to go to the dining room. We already ordered our drinks and didn't want to change tables since I was not told this when I made the reservations. I asked to speak with the manager. He grudgingly went to get the manager. The waitress finally came with the drinks and the menu (which we already had.) I told her to hold off with the drinks because we weren't able to order from the price fix menu and were going to leave. The waitress told us we can order from that menu, she took care of it and so we stayed. Quite frankly we would have been better off leaving. My friend and I both ordered the potato pancakes as an appetizer, my friend ordered the sauerbraten for the entree, and I ordered the German wurst sample platter. My friend ordered apple strudel for dessert, and I ordered the German chocolate cake. The potato pancakes were way to thick and had very little flavor, my friend said the sauerbraten was terrible and that it didn't taste anything like sauerbraten. The wurst platter was ok, nothing special. My friend thought the strudel was very good whereas I on the other hand thought that the German chocolate cake had almost no chocolate flavor. The taste of chocolate was coming from the chocolate syrup that decorated the plate. To make the evening worse, a woman came up and sang with our friends, a man took a video of them and pulled over a high bar chair and sat right in front of our table and a table of 6, blocke our view of our friends and the woman singing. When they were finished singing, I got up and thanked him for blocking our view and sat back down. He then came over to our table and in a very loud voice proceeded to ask why I didn't say anything before and why did I wait so long to say something. He continued on about how he was taking videos & posting it on Facebook. Funny, he wasn't taking any videos of our friends until the woman got up and started singing with them. He had finished taking the video and then sat in our way to post it to Facebook. He could very easily sat off to the side. He didn't have to pull over the chair and sit in front of us. After that he then had the audacity to turn around and in a very loud voice tell me that he paid for our friends to be there and that I should thank him for us being able to see them at Garden Grill. He was extremely loud, rude and obnoxious. Now we get the bill and our shock when we see that they charged $10 for a soda (not a mixed drink,) the same price as a beer (a bit pricy for the beer as well.) We were so disappointed with food, and the service was horrible that it reflected in the waitress's tip. Normally we would tip 20% or more of the bill but in this instance the waitress was lucky if she got 10%. We will not be going back to Garden Grill, it's not worth the trip from Riverhead and if you live in the neighborhood, I don't recommend wasting your time and money to eat there.

Yelp
Overall, I liked the restaurant, but my entree was horrible. The good: Generous portions for appetizers for restaurant week. Interesting selections, nicely done. The pumpkin entree was very good. Unique & tasty. Smoked pork chops were decent. Not really to my taste. But wife liked it. Dessert - s'mores was delicious. Drinks were very good. Generous wine pour. My cocktail - the Balzerac - was delicious. Service was excellent. Waitress was attentive but not overbearing. My water glass was filled throughout the meal. The bad: I ordered the ribs & have to say it's the worst ribs I ever had. The sauce was fine. The meat was tougher than my belt. Tasted as if they were only cooked for 15 mins under a broiler. Truly awful. The pear dessert was also not good. Not juicy at all. Lacking flavor. I leave here with the odd feeling that I'll be back even though my meal was terrible. I enjoyed everything else enough to try it again. The live music was also a bonus. Talented musicians playing a range of music - all good!

Yelp
We were seated immediately, according to our reservation time. The table they gave us for four people was meant for a party of two. The restaurant was extremely crowded and loud. Sounded like a high school cafeteria. On top of crowded and loud they had a live band! Overall the food was good. But, the service was as awful! Every table around us was asking for their server to order. After waitress brought us our food, she was gone! We never were offered another drink. We had to beg for a dessert menu from a busy-boy, and never had opportunity to order. We waited over 30 minutes for waitress but nothing. Service is just as important to food, they definitely lack in service and were overwhelmed with the crowd.

Yelp
I always liked coming here. The food is always good as well as service and drinks. I'm here getting the family feast for 4 . Choose chicken Francese and chicken pot pie. Comes with soup and salad and a great price. Also got a free drink . Nice people here I can't wait till they open fully again. I will be back.

Yelp
I have eaten here 3 or 4 times and it always has been pretty average. Have never been wowed by the quality or flavors. Last time I had "Jewels of the sea" which was pasta w seafood in a white wine sauce but the sauce was lacking a lot of flavor. The meat and cheeseboard was not great quality, prosciutto was thick, odd cheese selections. The mango habanero cocktail was way too hot (I was shocked because I love spicy margaritas) and tasted very artificial. I have also had the lobster roll which is average taste and small. The ambiance is nice, staff is ok (some nice, some rude). This place is just eh. Want to like it more but I have given it a few chances

Yelp
Ah Long Island. I always have a SMDH vibe after I see questionable things like what I was served on Sunday. This place is cute as hell! And the first thing I noticed driving up was, Damn that's some nice ass bricks! I'm assuming they Nico-locked the entire place, its pretty damn sexy if you ask me. (Hey, I'm Italian. We love to hose off cement. Its in our DNA) Walking inside, it's a Laura Ashley dream. Very cozy, it almost looks like a bed & breakfast. When you walk in, to the right is a nice looking bar with a few taps. I order a glass of wine while waiting for our friends. It's Smithtown restaurant week, 3 courses will cost $29 bucks. Not too shabby. My BFF from Sachem walks in, Guy back slaps happen. We peck the wives on the cheek and sit down. Three courses, I start with the burrata cheese plate. Long Island restaurants love using balsamic vinegar! The chef made a nice pattern on the cheese, like he was making a Starbucks Caramel Macchiato. The vinegar wasn't too over powering, overall it was a good starter. Here's where things get loopy. I've never been here before, what brings me to the restaurant was the price fixe menu. Lobster tail?? I'm in. I ordered the lobster tail and what was served to the 3 of us was an overcooked tail with shrimp stuffing and mashed potatoes. Mashed potatoes?? Really? I mean, when you order lobster anything mashed potatoes isn't a menu choice. I'm stuffed at this point, I wasn't a happy camper after the double starchy lobster dish. Now dessert comes out. I choose the apple crumble with ice cream. The dish is served in a creme brûlée dish, I was I had creme brûlée. They took apples out of a can with the syrupy goo, threw a crumble on top and warmed it. My 12 year old niece could make this dish. Now here's where I'm SMDH. Once again, Long Island in the house.. My lobster was kept too long on the grill and dessert was let down. Garden Grill, I beg your pardon. I was expecting a rose garden.

Yelp
Where do I begin. We had a 6:30 Mother's Day Reservation. We arrived a few minutes early to find about 30-40 people waiting since as long as 5:30 to be seated. There were two bartenders for the entire restaurant and it was a fire hazard and dangerous having so many people stuck there; it was raining and 45 degrees so hanging out outside (no chairs or shelter) would not work. Luckily for us, many of the 6pm folks left in rage and so we were "only" delayed about 30 minutes before being seated. The place emptied out quickly, but the service never improved. We were offered free wine, but they tried to charge us after taking 15 minutes to make 8 clearly free drinks for an older gentleman. After we were finally seated, it took about 30 minutes to put in an order. It took another 45 minutes for the food to come. No one checked on us besides the occasional refill of water, or the bread we were given in the beginning. Service was abrupt and unhelpful when we were able to flag someone down. My meal was disgusting. The scallops were overcooked and tough and the risotto was cold and gloppy, like oatmeal or gruel. I sent it back; they tried to have me just eat it or order something else, but I wanted my expensive scallops cooked properly, and edible risotto, thank you very much. They gave me what I'll call "slightly raw" scallops (two were cold in the middle but at least I could eat them?) after admitting that they have no idea how scallops are supposed to be cooked. Wow! The risotto was now as hot as soup but still as dreadful. I've never had such a miserable pile of food for so much money. My boyfriend's shortribs were overcooked and he had to really cut into them with a steak knife. He didn't send them back because he was starving and he didn't want to upset my mother any further. My brother hated his penne alla vodka which was a strange color and had hard, old peas in it; again, he ate it but admitted it was terrible. My mother enjoyed her prime rib, but I don't know how; it was pallid and gross and she had to ask for more sauce. My dad was the luckiest one apparently as his chicken was fine. It took about another 30 minutes to get dessert and the check. My mother and I both got creme brulees (I was skeptical but needed a palette cleanser and 9 dollars for creme brulee makes more sense than 6 dollars for a cappuccino). Hers looked ok but mine was super burnt. We were too exhausted to send yet another failure back after being there from 6:20 to after 9pm. I ended up feeling awful and sick after eating this horrid meal. The only thing that was yummy was the bread, and honestly that still was disappointing because they used butter packets. For a place this expensive, you'd expect something homemade to go with it. I know I at least will never return. This place ruined our Mother's Day and affected my return to work today.

Yelp
Mother's Day dinner ruined. As soon as we walked in the hostess was unpleasant. We were seated upstairs at a table for 9 but we had 8 people. Dirty napkins, half drank waters. Missing utensils and place settings and very warm room with window open no A/c. After that no one came for a pretty long time I have to say about a half hour. I had to go downstairs to tell the hostess(who was the only one I could find) we are being forgotten about upstairs and already not to happy. Asked for cold water with ice and took another half hour. No one cleaned the table, no one removed the used glasses. Had to ask for silverware which never came ... had to get up and get myself from another empty table. We had about 7 different people come up that barely spoke- all limp noodles with no pep in there step for a what should be high energy day. We asked for bread 5 times to get 7 cold rolls and never brought more even though we asked. Ordering food took forever and also took forever to come and wasn't hot just warm. It was just ok- nothing great. Drinks took forever too. we were basically the forgotten table upstairs. I spoke to Gloria after paying $720 for dinner and she said people called out and offered nothing to us. I called back the next day because it still was bothering me and Gloria tells me credit card machine went down during our service and she was praying to the angels. What does the credit card have to do with personal touch service or at least telling your customers your sorry. Filling water doesn't require a credit card machine. Gloria is a liar and shitty owner who doesn't roll up her sleeves and help when the going gets tough in the restaurant business. She told me a gift card would be in the mail. I gave her a few chances to rectify the situation and waited and still to this day 6/30/23... absolutely nothing. I've left messages on Instagram, at the restaurant and fb and no reply. Gloria is a dishonest restaurant owner and could care less about her customers. I had two communions in the past there and a repeat customer. I will never recommend or return. Garden Grill Smithtown is a rip off. My local pizza guy gives better service.

Yelp
I stopped in the other night to listen to the live music and enjoy the bar. The Garden grill is such a quaint restaurant with a cozy atmosphere. Listening to the live music was awesome ad or bartenders tii great cars if us. The eats at the bear were amazing, we heard the antipasto and the egg rolls. I also saw a beautiful extra large Bavarian pretzel cone out as well. That like some.

Yelp
Very disappointed. I usually post 4-5 star reviews but just cannot here. They were clearly understaffed. It took 30 minutes for our group of four to get our drinks ordered. Took another 30 minutes for the drinks to arrive. They forgot my Caesar salad which I ended up getting after all others were done and the entrees arrived. I had the salmon which was good but not gourmet. My wife ordered the vegetarian option which was clearly loaded with garlic to hide the fact that it was mostly tasteless. Our friends ordered the chicken franchese and a cheeseburger. Both were good they said. Given the poor service and the late salad you would have thought we could have been comped something. Maybe then we might give it another shot. The silverware was not complete so we had to ask the water person to get us some. You get the picture.

Yelp
we went too the garden grill Saturday night 11/19 service was terrible they brought appetizers and dinners all out at once no room at all on the table. I went to make room and put some dishes on a empty table the owner was obnoxious and I think he was drunk he got very nasty with me. They messed up the drink orders and the owner came back to the table because we complained and he was looking too pick a physical fight with one of my friends he was a obnoxious crazy person. Needless too say it will be a cold day in hell before we go back to that crazy man's place. The food isn't wonderful either.

Yelp
One of my favorite restaurants. I love the Victorian decor. A great place for Mother's Day or a special occasion. I love even just stopping in for lunch. The food is great and the staff is always wonderful.

Yelp
Ive lived on the island for some time now and I've passed by the Garden Grill quite a few times but never went in until yesterday. Thanks to Restaurant Week, my friend and I decided to try it out. Apparently it used to be a house that was changed into a restaurant. The feeling I got was homey Victorian, decorated from floor to ceiling with knick knacks and the like. The girl who greeted us at the door was absolutely adorable, friendly and welcoming. She sat us at a table upstairs and told us that Jen would be our server. There was a guy singing and playing live music by the bar. He was excellent! We had already looked over the menu and knew exactly what we wanted, so we started out with grilled artichokes which were so tasty being served with tzatzki sauce. My friend chose lamb chops as her entree and I opted for the swordfish. Can't say anything about her meal but the swordfish was really good. It was nice and juicy and cooked perfectly. For dessert, my friend had the lemon cheesecake and I picked the strawberry cobbler ala mode. Nice meal, nice location.

Yelp
We have only been here in person to eat twice, but have gotten quite a few takeout orders and food packages over the past year and have always loved everything. This review is coming up from our experience last week where we went with some family and did the banquet menu. It was a last minute set up that they accommodated wonderfully, the staff was friendly and super attentive from the guy who took the reservation over the phone to the girl who helped set us up with a lovely table outside and all the wait staff. Everyone was wonderful, food was great and service was amazing considering pretty much one waitress was handling all 13 of us. Highly recommend for anything, and thank you to everyone at garden grill who helped us relax and unwind after a tough few days.
