"The Shaw cocktail bar just unveiled a new 600-square-foot cocktail garden pouring new draught selections like a Boulevardier and Rum Old Fashioned. The airy respite, lined with colorful rhododendrons and hibiscuses, also sports a retractable awning to encourage drinking in the spring rain." - Tierney Plumb

My wife and I, after a very long week, tried the Gaslight Tavern for a drink. We love the so-called neighborhood bars, not too pretentious nor too fancy. For example, we're huge fans of The Wonderland Ballroom and The Good Silver. And the Gaslight was a terrific revelation. The hosts were super friendly, the service cozy, and the spaces... well, the patio is quite incredible: it's basically a secret pearl in the middle of U Street noises. Drinks? We had some rosé wine, the Calvados 75 cocktail and... a wonderful Negroni with Hendrick's, which was one of the best I've ever tried. Cheap ($7 for the Calvados), good and very well prepared. Food? We tried the shrimp cocktail, so fresh and juicy, and the superb cheeseburger, probably one of the best in DC (I can say without any doubt that, for me, it's better than the Proper Burger of Duke's). You can reach the heaven for $14, which is a reasonable price (finally!!!) for a great burger in DC. Go, go, go.

Met a few friends here for happy hour. Sat out back. Couldn't sit fully outside due to the rain. Overall the place has a nice ambiance, old school tavern feel. Happy hour drink selection was rather limited, but what was on the list was good. I liked the cocktail choice and my fiancee liked the wine options. Food was very tasty, but it would have been nice to have a few options on happy hour. Regular cocktails were a mixed bag. I really liked the Aviation, while the Old Fashioned wasn't my favorite. Service was great, very friendly and attentive. Overall an enjoyable time, we would certainly go back.

This review is focused on happy hour. Gaslight Tavern happy hour is worth stopping in for! The drink specials are above average for DC but the service and atmosphere set it apart. Service is available for the back bar and patio. The staff is attentive and friendly. Gaslight Tavern's decor is great and evokes the height of the roaring 20's.

I hosted a surprise 30th birthday party for my girlfriend here. The staff was extremely helpful-- reserved several tables for us, created an original cocktail in my girlfriend's honor, let us put up a few decorations, and let us bring in our own cake. The staff was attentive all evening, and they even brought us a knife and plates to serve the cake with. The burgers are delicious, the cocktails are excellent, and the atmosphere is classy yet cozy, including a real fireplace. Definitely recommend it!

Great spot to grab cocktails. Menu is great, plus bartenders are willing to go off menu for requests as well. There's a back patio that's a great spot to have a couple drinks with friends, but if it gets too loud you can always head inside for a quieter, more intimate vibe.

Beautiful restaurant-- unique 1920s decor, relaxed but elegant. Food is great- the menu is small, but everything we tried was cooked beautifully. I had the mushroom toast- definitely recommend. Staff was very nice. Prices were good too.

What a beautiful bar! Big bar up front. Smaller bar in the back and a patio. Great place to go anytime but we love coming here on Friday and Saturday nights. You can actually have a conversation and not be jammed in wall to wall with people. Current cocktail list is a little boozy for me but the El Diablo is delicious. I did not care for the white sangria but that's ok.
