D.C. Voters Approve $15 Minimum Wage for Tipped Workers | Eater DC

"Opened within the past year as part of Ian Hilton's rapid expansion, this tavern is one of more than a half-dozen restaurants and bars he launched; Hilton says that if the D.C. Council does not overturn the new minimum-wage initiative he will shift future expansion to Northern Virginia because he expects the impact of the wage increase in D.C. "will be pretty hefty." - Warren Rojas

Retro-Themed Gaslight Tavern Is Here | Eater DC

"I was glad to finally see the lights switched on January 29 at the new Gaslight Tavern, located at 2012 Ninth Street NW; the space was designed by Joe Reza to capture a 1920s tavern feel with wood floors, multiple fireplaces, artsy light fixtures, patterned wallpaper and a fenced-in patio that will continue taking shape this spring. There are two bars (one up front and a second tucked away in the back) serving the same roster: five draft beers (including an IPA from Vanish Farmwoods Brewery, 3 Stars Brewing’s Above the Clouds pale ale, and Ommegang’s Hennepin saison), prosecco on draft, seven canned and bottled beers (all $5–$9), about a dozen wines by the glass, and nearly a dozen cocktails ($12–$13). Chef Brendan L’Etoile brings gourmet touches to a small-plates–centric menu — poutine smothered in miso-spiked gravy, a salad of gem lettuce with radishes and buttermilk dressing, and a mushroom toast of thick-cut bread doused in a sherry reduction topped with sautéed mushrooms, goat cheese and a lacy fried egg that he calls a tartine-like take — while Hilton is rooting for the house cheeseburger and a short-rib stew with beef, bacon, onions and roasted carrots. The bar opened for dinner to start, with brunch expected to follow and lunch possible if the neighborhood dictates it." - Warren Rojas

I’ll start by saying the staff were really lovely and knowledgeable. The food was good, but maybe not great. We had the sliced red pork and it was just okay, served with a fairly ordinary mustard dip. The pho was huge and impressive, broth was flavorful and the ribeye was nice too. Our was missing the egg but the sever gave us eggs to go with our leftovers. My husband enjoyed the shrimp stir fry though only around 4 shrimp in there but they were a good size. I had the green curry, wonderful curry sauce, way too much bamboo in there though. Overall, we would come back and I’m sure they’ll do very well.

Google
I’m giving 3 stars on atmosphere only because when we walked in we weren’t even greeted. Just stood there and eventually someone came up and just looked at us, grabbed to menus, and said ‘right this way’. Our server was great and very attentive. The food was excellent and different! We had the crab Rangoon which was…goodies, and the dumplings which were awesome! For entrees, I had the tiger steak (little overdone but still good) and my man had the orange chicken which was excellent. Overall, different but very tasty!

Google
I cannot say enough about how good the food is here. There have only a handful of times in the last decade that I remember sitting down and exploring/deeply enjoying foods I haven't experienced yet. This was one of those times. I haven't come across a restaurant with appetizers and entrees of this style anywhere else in this area. The taste and quality were above average. The wait staff was very nice. Chef Brandon was also very nice. It was great that he came out to see how we liked our food.

My husband and I recently took a weekend getaway to Lake Tomahawk, WI, and as food lovers with a particular fondness for Asian cuisine, we always make it a point to try out local spots. I stumbled upon this gem and, despite my husband being a bit of a food critic, I was determined to give it a shot. To our surprise, it exceeded both of our expectations—yes, even my husband’s! I ordered the pho, which, as any Asian food lover knows, can be hit or miss. But this one was definitely a hit. While it might not have quite matched my mother-in-law’s legendary recipe, it was still incredibly tasty and well-made. My husband went for the Mongolian beef, which was also delicious and packed with flavor. The bartender was fantastic—busy but attentive, and really on top of things. We also caught a quick glimpse of the chef, who I’m sure came out to make sure everything was up to par, especially since we were the only Asian diners in the restaurant. It was a nice touch, and it made us feel truly welcomed. If you’re an Asian food enthusiast looking for a satisfying meal in the area, I highly recommend this place. I’ll definitely be back to try the Crying Tiger next time. Keep up the great work!

Google
We had an outstanding dinner! We enjoyed the Mongolian beef and red chicken curry, both bursting with flavor. This is our second experience dining here, and it never disappoints!. Highly recommend for a different type of Northwoods meal.

Google
I should have known not to go to an Asian fusion restaurant in thr Northwoods. The chicken was dark, fatty meat. The beef was chewy. The broccoli was passed its prime. The meal was not cheap and not good. We were gaslighted.

Forgot our appetizer. Gave it to us on her, she said. Finally remembered to bring our drinks to the table towards end of meal. Food was unbelievably fantastic!!

Google
Hallelujah, a place with multiple vegetarian options in the Northwoods! Went with a mix of people who eat meat and don't, and everyone was happy. My parents rave about the crab rangoon egg rolls. I tried the chili oil cheese curds and enjoyed them. We loved the curries, and I saw people enjoying the pho at a table nearby - looked delicious! If you're looking for these type of Asian dishes, or clearly labeled vegetarian dishes, in the Northwoods - this is worth a stop for sure.

Yelp
I have now eaten here 3x since opening with the new chef. My original thoughts were to compare to Lemongrass in Wausau, the closest Asian Fusion restaurant to Gaslight Tavern. While the atmosphere at GLT is very different than the cuisine, the food is top notch. Green curry is difficult to find in a rural area and the spices are well balanced, highly flavorful with some heat. I'd love to see a brown rice option and a spice scale for customization. Plan ahead or drop in early to have a chance at a table! Not currently accepting reservations.

Yelp
Finally got to check this place out! Enjoyed a lovely dinner here with a friend. Service: Service was very friendly and prompt. Our server walked us through the drink and food specials and the menu. She shared that the staff tasted both entree specials and they were excellent. Drinks: I had the Almost a Mango Margarita. It was very flavorful and the Tajin on the rim really complimented it. Highly recommend. My friend had a Spotted Cow on tap. Regret not trying the McIntosh mule special, as that sounded good and was only $7. Food: We started with the Brussels sprouts & onion appetizer. This was excellent and enjoyed the Parmesan cheese on top. My guest had the GLT burger and fries. They could not stop talking about the high quality of beef and said this was one of the best burgers they had. I had the Mac & Cheese with pork shoulder. This was a hearty meal and I took 1/3 of it home. The pork shoulder and BBQ sauce really made the dish. My only criticism is there was too much cheese sauce on the shell pasta, and the balance seemed off. Their dessert was strawberry shortcake, but we were too full to try it. Hope to have dessert next time. Ambience: The restaurant has a big oval bar, which was hopping with customers. The dining room had two small areas - one with high top tables and one with regular tables. It was decorated with antiques, which was welcoming, Recommend checking this place out!

Yelp
10/10! Food was absolutely AMAZING! Service was great. Chef Brandon has created something awesome in the Northwoods! Everything was spectacular. Can't wait to go back.

Yelp
Spectacular- just incredible. Hubby had the new fish fry with chili sauce and I had the Mongolian beef with a side of broccoli and I could not stop eating it! The meat was an incredible cut and the sauce was a very good flavor. Hubbys fish fry was crispy and fries were excellent- best place up here and we have been everywhere. So so good

Cara J.

Yelp
Food wasn't great. Under cooked chicken in teriyaki chicken. Maybe try a different type of food.

Yelp
I need to amend my previous review of Gaslight Tavern. The last review was due to a reservation issue but I went back again. This time I got to eat and oh my I'm so glad I did. My friend and I started out with Spring rolls for an appetizer. There were 6 crispy crunchy rolls which were very good. For my dinner I ordered the Tuna Poke Nachos and fried dumplings thinking the Tuna Poke would be just a small portion. OMG it was a heaping plate full. The nacho chips were cooked to a crunchy golden brown and topped with Tuna Poke. The Tuna mixed with a crunchy something was FABULOUS. Absolutely the best dish I've had in years. I wish I could describe it better but Yummy! The restaurant has more of an urban vibe than most restaurants up here. The waitstaff was well informed and quite friendly. I'm was utterly stuffed with the Tuna Poke so I didn't even get to the fried dumplings. This restaurant is definitely a gem, give it a try.

Yelp
The food was delicious, the atmosphere is amazing and most of all, the people that work there, especially Heather, go above and beyond to make you feel welcome. We will definitely be back!

Yelp
We decided to try the Gaslight for dinner. Live 2 person band at the entrance playing ABBA's Dancing Queen etc. I'd say that the bar/restaurant was to small, or perhaps they were too loud? Don't want to sound old but it didn't make for good dinning experience, although the one inebriate at the bar loved the jam! Ordered the conch and fish fritters. Three fritters came out with an under seasoned aioli sauce under it. I have had conch and couldn't taste any of the giant sea snail. It was breading and ?? Lacked flavor without the fishes or protein substitutes. Our main dishes were the Walleye platter and the Pub burger. Pub burger was good and well cooked but lacked seasoning. I think the fries were Oreida fries, but that's okay. The walleye plate was one fillet of walleye?? I'm with the other dinner who stated it could be catfish! Fishy tasting and even lemon had problems covering the fishiness. The tarter sauce was good, and helped hide the fishy flesh of this pin bone infestation passed as walleye. There was a 1/4 cold biscuit placed on the plate too, what the heck?? Cole slaw was zucchini!! I have never had slaw made so awful. It was shredded zucchini with some type of vinegar sauce served in a condiment dish!! I'm not one to bash a restaurant that is trying to serve pretentious food. If you serve $$$ food make it worth the working persons wage or make sure it's flavor is unworldly. Service by the way was outstanding and salvaged the rating to two stars.

Yelp
Lipstick on the wine glass. Bartender poured my Moscato from 2 different brands of white wine and neither was a moscato. Waitress didn't tell us the special or the soup. The dining room was so cold I had to wear my winter coat while eating. It too 40 minutes to get a rare steak and a grilled cheese sandwich and there wasn't anyone else in the place. NEVER AGAIN

Yelp
This place is definitely for a certain crowd. The dishes have a twist that most kids would not like. The biscuit basket appetizer was good. Came with about 5-7 biscuits, honey butter and a strawberry topping that was very good. After dinner we ordered the strawberry shortcake from the board. Strangely it came with three of the biscuits, the same kind as the appetizer and strawberry glaze with a powdered sugar dusting. It was more expensive than the appetizer but came with less of the same thing. So if you get the strawberry shortcake order another round of the biscuit basket instead.
