"I was glad to finally see the lights switched on January 29 at the new Gaslight Tavern, located at 2012 Ninth Street NW; the space was designed by Joe Reza to capture a 1920s tavern feel with wood floors, multiple fireplaces, artsy light fixtures, patterned wallpaper and a fenced-in patio that will continue taking shape this spring. There are two bars (one up front and a second tucked away in the back) serving the same roster: five draft beers (including an IPA from Vanish Farmwoods Brewery, 3 Stars Brewing’s Above the Clouds pale ale, and Ommegang’s Hennepin saison), prosecco on draft, seven canned and bottled beers (all $5–$9), about a dozen wines by the glass, and nearly a dozen cocktails ($12–$13). Chef Brendan L’Etoile brings gourmet touches to a small-plates–centric menu — poutine smothered in miso-spiked gravy, a salad of gem lettuce with radishes and buttermilk dressing, and a mushroom toast of thick-cut bread doused in a sherry reduction topped with sautéed mushrooms, goat cheese and a lacy fried egg that he calls a tartine-like take — while Hilton is rooting for the house cheeseburger and a short-rib stew with beef, bacon, onions and roasted carrots. The bar opened for dinner to start, with brunch expected to follow and lunch possible if the neighborhood dictates it." - Warren Rojas
