Gaspare's Pizza - Review - Richmond - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"You can’t miss Gaspare’s. The Richmond restaurant is painted in bright green, red, and white Italian flag stripes for all of Geary Boulevard to admire. Come here when you want to sit at a checkered tablecloth and casually shovel garlic bread into your mouth while debriefing an eventful weekend. While the pasta dishes are overcooked, you’ll be happy with the thin-crust pizzas with a slightly sweet tomato sauce. You can build your own, but there are a whopping 29 options with pre-determined topping combinations—we like the Gaspare’s Special with fresh tomatoes and melty feta." - Julia Chen

This Italian restaurant is very good. It's been around for a long time and if you eat here, you'll see why. Both pasta and pizza are excellent choices, but you really can't go wrong. You will not regret giving this restaurant a try. Can get busy on Friday and Saturday nights, may have a wait. No lobby or bar to wait at.

Google
Absolutely the best Pizza and Italian restaurant I have been to. The decor is real, cozy, and relaxing. The service was AMAZING 👏 Thank you Heather. See I even remembered her name :) The food though. 👌 We had calamari, veal, ravioli, a pizza that was sooo good I flew it back home with me!! And the tiramasu was to die for. Good price. The overall experience was magnificent. I Absolutely recommend this wonderful place to everybody.

Google
Was blown away by the deliciousness of everything - bread, salad, wine, pizza, and spumoni were all 10/10 across the board, so good!! Service was amazing too, they were so nice. Can’t wait to come back and try the rest of the menu.

Google
This is definitely not in an area you would be in unless you are looking for great Italian food with amazing mozzarella sticks. This place rocks! I came here because I am always on the search for mozzarella sticks and this place did not disappoint me. Plus the service was impeccable and the lasagna was to die for. Definitely a place to come. Love the old style decor and the feel of this homey place.

Google
Worst Caesar salad ever. It was like watered down mayonnaise on lettuce. Chicken marsala was really bland and the food in general was bismal and disappointing. Only cool thing was the plastic grapes that are draped from the ceiling. I really wanted to love this place.

Google
The most wonderful place, the atmosphere is amazing with Italian music and food is sooo delicious!! Recommend 100%

Google
Fantastic, old school pizza place with an old world theme and setting. The food is truly delicious and exceptional. The service dining in can be amazing but also can be a delayed if it gets busy. We came in here once during an especially stressful night and one of the servers seemed to be having a really tough day. She served us and then forgot that she served us and then forgot what we ordered so only charged us for salad. We obviously paid for the rest, and that once situation was no indicative of the other experiences I have had here, but it's worth pointing out. I love this place, I do prefer getting there pizza for pick up, or coming on a quiet evening.

Google
Pizza is amazing! I love the old school seats, but the place got spruce up recently and looks great! This is a must for anyone to try.

Yelp
Love love love this place!! This has come to be my go to when family comes to visit and a regular for my friend and I to catch up on life and work gossip. They have $10 corkage fee if you bring your own wine. Parking can be a pain but like most places in San Francisco. The service, food and servers are amazing. You never feel rushed even if you arrive close to closing time. Pizzas are top tier. A little greasy but amazing. The Alfredo sauce is to tie for. The mix salad is fresh and if you add chicken it gives it that extra flavor. Baked lasagna, raviolis and chicken wings are delicious as well. I've been more than 5 times and we try to try a new dish each time. Very cozy, family oriented place. Highly recommend- you won't be disappointed.

Yelp
This is my second time eating at this restaurant and I love this pizza please. The pizza was excellent and the before dinner salad was great too. The service was very friendly and the ambiance of this place was great too. I highly recommend people come here if they are in a mood for pizza

Yelp
Been here several times for take out and today's large size pizza of sausage, mushrooms, salami and bell peppers was just average overall compared to previous pies that I've had here. A couple of the slices were slightly folded over at the top when I opened up the box. Box was hand carried for 3 blocks and not jostled. Perhaps, I should have added some other toppings as tonight's pie was lacking in taste.

Yelp
I live nearby and know that this restaurant is an institution in SF. It's a small yet cute place, with aged decor and vibe. People here are nice, but not pushy. Their service style is not very pushy. For example, they didn't come up too many times or checked if we would want another glass of wine, but they would come and fill up the water pretty fast. Food here is good. The pizza here is definitely my top 1. No.29 with pepperoni is completely to my liking. It's salty, oily, and flavorful. The crust is also crispy, which is also to my liking m. The calamari is averagely good. They tiramisu is on the sweet side, and no achole in to. Compared to many places in the north beach, this place might not be the best, but it serves the people around here.

Yelp
Finally got to try Gaspare's. We called in for the sausage and mushrooms & pepperoni pizzas for pickup at opening time and they were ready about 20 minutes later. Crispy crust and good flavor. Would get again!
google avatar

Yelp
Our favorite homey Pizza joint for over 40 years - used to be Vince's and has been Gaspare's for many years. Same menu. We always get the Caesar Salad with Anchovies on the side, a medium Bruce's Special, and Veal Scallopini with Garlic and Oil Noodles. Yelp Check-in to get a great piece of Tiramisu.

Yelp
Every year we come here for my best friend's birthday and I can't believe it tastes better every time! The service is impeccable, fast, friendly, kind! They treat you like family here. If you're looking for a cute, really tasty, family friendly restaurant then there's no need to second guess yourself. Go to Gaspare's ASAP!!!
google avatar

Yelp
Went to Gaspares and got the mozzarella sticks, spinach and feta pizza and fettuccine Alfredo. It was just okay. Nothing extraordinary. The pasta was good with a nice garlic flavor and it was creamy. The pizza took a long time to come out despite the fact that the restaurant was empty and the crust was super dry which I didn't like. The mozzarella sticks were good but nothing special. Liked the ambiance and the server was nice.
google avatar

John A.

Yelp
Gaspares has a sign that says "sit at any clean table". So we did. Then we were told this table was reserved. There was no placard on the table that said so. The waitress was overly rude and just said the table was reserved and walked away. Bummer. There are other Italian places thankfully.
google avatar

Un M.

Yelp
I've only been to Gaspare's twice and both times the pizza has been different (in a good way) I think it all depends on how busy it is and what time of day it is. The wait time is 35 mins if it is busy on a weekend or a game day and only 20 if it's not busy and it's just a regular day. Pizza is crunchy and very very cheesy, sometimes it drops down from how hot it is, super yummy. This is A classy old school place with a cool history, a family restaurant, an Italian American experience. I recommend this place just be aware be nice and be patient of the wait times.

Yelp
Left my heart at Gaspare's! The special Penne Alla Vodka was insane, Smokey tomato and rich. Thin crust is best in town. Kids can watch the chefs spinning pizzas near the pizza station. We've been coming here almost 30 yrs! To amo Gaspare's! Hugs to Heather!

Yelp
Where do I even begin? Gaspare's has been a family favorite for pizza for over 20 years. We don't get to have Gaspare's often as we don't live in SF anymore. My mom lives about 10 blocks from Gaspare's, but she is not a huge pizza fan so pizza is not a food we have often when we have dinner with her. We recently picked up six pies for a birthday get-together and every pizza was as delicious as I can remember. Takeout ordering is available online and convenient. I was able to select my pick-up time and pay in advance. Upon arrival a little before 6 p.m., the restaurant was already filled with diners and people waiting for their takeouts. The place was nostalgic to me as it looks just as I remembered with the red and white tablecloths and floral decor. It was raining pretty hard and nearly impossible for me to carry six pies to my husband's double-parked car around the block. A server was so nice and offered to help me carry the pizzas in the rain. The pizzas were so chock full of toppings and the crust was just right. I love the ground salami they use in their pizzas. We got a cheese pizza, 2 pizza alla sorrento (ground salami and mushrooms), a Bruce's Special (linguica, ground salami, mushrooms, garlic), an Eddie's Special (anchovies, mushrooms, pepperocinis, garlic) and a combo fantastico (pepperoni, mushrooms, sausage, ground salami, bell peppers, onions, olives). My favorite was the Eddie's Special. Anchovies in pizza always make it different and flavorful! Writing this review makes me crave Gaspare's again!

Yelp
Great, great, GREAT old school Italian. I started w a nice, fresh, crisp, cold house salad. I got a pizza with linguiza. I decided to get double cheese. I usually do. So i can't say how their normal pizzas are but this one was super fabu. Perfectly rich. And the lady serving was as warm and comforting on a cold SF evening as can be. Highest recommendation.

Yelp
This is my "go to place" for pizza and Chicken Marsala and Tiramisu! I love the warm family atmosphere at the restaurant.
google avatar

Hal S.

Yelp
Great food and great service. Very relaxing place! Had the meat ravioli with meat sauce very good.

Marisa R.

Yelp
I feel really sad. Been ordering from this place for almost 20 years and now they have bad customer service and the pizza arrived completely with the cheese and sauce slid off of it. Sloppy and gross , never used to be like this. Like they dropped it on delivery. I called and asked and he said oh well and write a bad review and basically he didn't care. Bye bye gaspares.
google avatar

The I.

Yelp
Great decor, great service. Ambiance is nostalgic. They even have table side jukeboxes that work! The pizza is classic style thin juicy and perfection!!!
google avatar

Ufo K.

Yelp
This is my grampa's place. Been going here since it was originally 'Vince's Pizza'. Then eventually Vince sold the place to Gaspare. #17. Manila Special. #19. Sausage & Mushrooms. Back in the day, when times were more civilized, this place stayed open until 2:am. Now they close early. Food's still great. Best pizza in San Francisco. Easily.
google avatar

David O.

Yelp
Still my personal favorite Italian restaurant in SF. Pizza, pasta, parmigianas, bread, etc: you can't go wrong here. Always appreciated the customer service here, too. Comfort food served by friendly servers in a cozy and old timey atmosphere. Love the juke box at your table. So glad they made it through the pandemic and are still open. Lots of locals still eat here and that is always a sign of good things. My meal of choice is a veal parm with raviolis, a caesar salad, bottle of Peroni and a cannoli with coffee. That's about 50 bucks these days but still a bargain.
google avatar

Robertta M.

Yelp
My husband has been going here for almost 40 years most likely when they opened! We've been coming when I came in the picture in 1988 and then when our son was born 1993! One of San Francisco's staples! We just went there last week I wasn't feeling too good to take pics but here are our faves! Or at least mine! The Cannolis absolutely amazing, I especially love it with their Raviolis in cream sauce! Pizzas are delish and my fave fave is their Minestrone Soup and the Tiramisu! Heck don't take my word for it, try it - PROMISE you'll love Gaspare's!
google avatar

Kathy H.

Yelp
Our group tried this cozy neighborhood restaurant last week. The menu offered lots of options. Sadly, there were several mix ups with what we were served: Caesar salad came out as a mixed green salad with lots of tomatoes and peppers with Italian dressing. My pasta with Boulanase sauce was served with a cream Vodka sauce (I guess, not quite sure). The meatball sandwich was huge and the pizza looked good. Perhaps an off night in the kitchen?

Yelp
Food was very good and we were very happy to support a local San Francisco restaurant that has been around for years. We took visiting family out for dinner and received excellent service: attentive and prompt without being intrusive. Fried calamari to start was plenty to share for our party of 5...it was delicious and came with two dipping sauces. Kids with us ordered pizza: perfect crust and delicious sausage topping. Pesto pasta was very good (as reported by niece), and special fish dish was very good but a little lacking in flavor. Portions were excellent and everything was served hot. We will return and recommend to friends!

Yelp
Every time we visit San FranciscoGaspsre's is a must! Best Lasagna with three meats! Amazing!! Also pizza is delicious ! Friendly service as well
google avatar

Laura T.

Yelp
I've ordered from here a few times via Uber eats- gluten free pizza and minestrone soup are excellent.

Payton A.

Yelp
I ordered what I thought would be Alfredo with crumbled sausage but instead was given this pasta with hardly any sauce and a large sausage on top. I have to laugh because I paid $30 for this including a 15% tip. Disappointed.
google avatar

Yelp
I can't say enough positive things about this place. The pizza taste just like East Coast, which I love. All the Italian dishes are amazing and authentic. And a very friendly staff and family.

Yelp
As always, the lasagna was amazing. Feels like a good, homey Italian place - I always like bringing my out of town visitors here

Yelp
Gaspare's, a charming restaurant with delectable food & a gorgeous atmosphere, quickly became a family favorite! The staff were incredibly friendly & personable, and the food tasted amazing (especially the mozzarella sticks and chicken parmigiana)! We will be back!
google avatar

Sarah S.

Yelp
Gaspare's is exactly what I want from an italian restaurant. It's ambiance feels like the classic kitschy vibe that is perfect for eating cheesy goodness. There are checkered tablecloths, grapes hanging from the ceiling, and my favorite part - mini jukeboxes on every table where you can play three songs for a quarter. We didn't have quarters, but they made change for us! The food is also great. This is probably the only place in SF I've been with homemade mozzarella sticks that slap this hard. We had the Bruce's special pizza as well - it was really cheesy with plenty of toppings in every bite. We also ordered the gnocchi bolognese - it was not what I expected from a bolognese, more like a tomato cream, but I absolutely loved it none the less! I'll definitely be coming back here - it's my new favorite neighborhood italian spot.

Yelp
I've known about this restaurant for a while, from the '80's when they were on El Camino Real in Belmont. It took me several years to learn that they were so close to home now, being in the Richmond District. With the many restaurant closures in their area, I was happy to see a Groupon promotion and promptly bought two. Reason? I wanted to try their pasta besides having the family try their pizza. On a recent Friday late afternoon, I placed a takeout order for my brother and me to share. We started with the calamari fritti (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=Gl0A6RzkxXOP2VeMzcZTkw&userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q); this came with several wedges of lemon and two sauce containers or marinara and tartar sauce. We were only able to finish about half and saved the rest for a meal later that week. I opted for the baked lasagna (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=Sq__Hcsu8JDQBFM8xU-n_A&userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q); the filling consisted of beef, pork sausage and 3 cheese. I like that it was not heavily filled with ricotta, the way I like it. I also ordered a side order of meatballs (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=4cfCSEziAAUodzBOqzfWHw&userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q) which comes two per order; I finished my lasagna so I only had room for one meatball with this dinner. It was your standard meatball and was in a pool of tangy marinara sauce. I ate the 2nd meatball with a slice of their provided bread a couple days later as a part of dinner. My brother tried the ravioli with pesto with meatballs (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=ldp_xBeDG443zBqsI8MaAQ&userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q). There were three slices of fresh delicious bread for each pasta order; the portions were generous so it became two dinners for him. I still have one coupon to use likely in the next couple of weeks to try their pizza. My brother and I both enjoyed their pastas and the calamari and I will continue to eye those deals to make visits here a regular thing. The dining room was about 1/3rd full at 5:30 pm on a Friday night, a decent but disappointing number of diners, given the quality of the food we tried. Hope things pick up for them.

Yelp
What a gem! My girls and I spent a long day at G.G. Park, visiting the Academy of Science and the Japanese Tea Garden. Before making the trek home to Sacramento, we were craving a delicious pizza to cap off the day. My wife and I searched for a classic Italian eatery close by. We didn't want chain or fine dining but something cozy and authentic. We hit the jackpot! This place was great! The service is prompt and on point. When I speak of service, I mean not what "self entitled so-called yelp foodies" would call service. I mean, how your grandmother would take care of you when you were visiting her in Tuscany. I've spent my entire career in "Michelin" level restaurants, and sometimes you just want real food from real people. The food is spectacular! It's one of the best pizzas I've ever had. Perfect bubbly crust with soft points as you'd expect in NY. Nothing fancy, but isn't that the point of pizza. All the other guests dining seemed to love their dishes, and from the looks of it, I can see why. Lots of za getting picked up for takeout, too. We ordered the #11 pizza...straight pepperoni for the kiddo, and my wife wanted the #26 with anchovies, peppers, and mushrooms. Sauce is on point. Crust on point, family vibe, old school italian eatery on point. And they have Peroni, which is always my go-to with a good pizza. I will always try to get back here every time I'm in the city! Thank you to the staff and the chefs for a wonderful dinner!
google avatar

Stevie C.

Yelp
Come here only for the pizzas. I made the mistake of ordering a veal scaloppini dinner @ a pizza joint. Too rubbery 4me. due to poorly prep the veal. It is what it is & service was good & looking at the nearby tables, their special/house & Caprese salad looks great.
google avatar

Melody K.

Yelp
Wow, this place gives you the warm and comfy vibes! We didn't have any issues with street parking when we arrived and were seated right away. Service is excellent, with smiles all around, the tables and booths were clean, and the decorations were fun to look at. I can see why they are highly rated here. They have a variety of pizza options, which was nice. We got their Hawaiian pizza and enjoyed it. The crust was baked just right, cheese was pulling, pizza was fresh ham and pineapples were juicy. Yum!
google avatar

Anders D.

Yelp
I love Gaspare's, been coming here for years. Super happy it survived the pandemic when so many other wonderful places did not. I really enjoy the Fettuccine Alfredo, the pepperoni Pizza and the Ceasar salads. Those are just my personal favs although it's hard to go wrong here if Italian comfort food is your thing like it is for me. Just a good old fashioned neighborhood Italian restaurant with friendly people and prices that won't break the bank. Cool old murals too. If you're looking for a place that's so hip it hurts this is not the joint for you. But if you want to eat some great grub, have a couple of beers and kick back, come on over.
google avatar

Fanny C.

Yelp
An original in the city and have been coming here for 15+ years. Love the atmosphere and the customer service is excellent. But the best part of course would be the pizza! Bruno's special hands down the best pizza. And it's as thin as you can get while still being able to hold up the toppings that they put on it. Definitely will come back!
google avatar

Daniel L.

Yelp
Stumbled upon this place. Love it. Amazing house white, excellent service. Good prices. Cozy feel. Will be back forsure

Yelp
SF location does not offer the Penne alla Vodka with spicy sausage & arugula. Marin location offers this remarkable and tasty dish you can't get anywhere else (well not like Gaspare's style), probably the best in the Bay Area. Although, I found the most unique Chianti bottle sold at this location during the pandemic, not available in Marin. Keep selling the alcohol to-go, great deals. I was craving pizza and pasta one night, ordered the Bruce's Special pizza and linguini with clams, maybe my palette has changed over the years, but this dish was straight up salty. Mom even commented like what is this, does the Chef not taste-test his food? Even the Bruce's Special was salty, but I'm used to this pizza being a bit salty. Yet, this time it was also too oily. Of course my teenage son ate everything in sight, didn't even notice the salty foods. Overall, the parklet added a nice touch, less street parking though. It's way too cold to eat outdoors in SF; they only serve dinner. Marin is more suitable for outdoor dining with warmer weather. Check out movie nights at the Marin location. 'Til next time ~ cheers & see you on Yelp (SYOY)! #supportlocalbusinesses

Yelp
Ordered pizza and pasta takeout. Pasta was ok and a bit pricey. Pizza came with tomato sauce despite us ordering NO TOMATO SAUCE.
google avatar

Toney W.

Yelp
Called on a Tuesday to place an order, long answering machine message that is difficult to understand. Bottom line, you cannot order via phone, has to be done online. That really sucks!
google avatar

Natalia C.

Yelp
got a meatball sub and a fettuccine Alfredo with chicken and mushrooms at 7pm on a Sunday - not sure if I just went at a bad time, but boy was it bland and overpriced. The fettuccine was $21.50. I received a sauce that was completely separated, extremely oily, under seasoned, and the chicken had no flavor at all. For the price??? Really disappointed. I could've gotten something much more gourmet at fiorella's right down the street for the same price. As for the meatball sub, the bread was probably made on Wednesday. I mean it was hard and chewy. But for $10, I guess that's what you pay for. At least the meatballs were half decent. Edible, at the least. Save your money and go elsewhere.

Yelp
My family visited this wonderful place for dinner and we will come back!! The service was warm and the food was better than we expected! We got the breaded mozzarella sticks and you have to get them too!! Some of the dishes we got were the Chicken Parmesan, the Gnocchi entrée with Alfredo, the Baked Lasagna and every single one of them we would get again in a heartbeat!!

Yelp
My husband and I have been going to dinner at Gaspare's on Geary St. on San Francisco, for quite some time. The ambiance is authentic Italian with paintings of Italy and wine bottles and leaves hanging from the ceiling. We love the food, it has become more tasty over the years. Tonight we ordered the Gaspare salad for two, which is fresh, and has a wonderful garlic salad dressing with herbs and olive oil and vinegar. We both ordered the Three Cheese Ravioli dishes with Marinara tomato sauce, which is absolutely delicious and orders of Swiss chard with a tasty garlic sauce. We were served warm bread and butter and we loved our drinks. We usually order coffee and spumoni, which is extremely tasty and refreshing. Tonight we were a little too full. The owner Gaspare came over to say hello and Happy New Year. The wait staff made us feel like family and it is a fun atmosphere. Heather waited on us and made us feel like we were at home with a friend. Don't hesitate. You will enjoy your time there! It is a definite family experience.

Yelp
I often bring my family here as well as visitors from out of town. Good pizza, great staff, good prices. What more do you need?

Yelp
Fresh ,no frills , go to old school style delicious and always friendly! Have gone here for many years a gem in the Richmond district!

Yelp
Price was brilliant for the amazing food, and the service was excellent too. Definitely will come with family

Yelp
Been here many times throughout the years. Good pizza, nice people, and a wonderful neighborhood place. A lot of students from my alma mater eat/ate here over the years. Recently ordered a pizza for pickup with pesto added on one side, the other side was Hawaiian because I know my MIL loves it. I took 2 slices to her, she's older and can't eat more but she appreciates having pizza once in a while. The restaurant forgot my pesto. Didn't know until I got home. It's a little disappointing because I was looking forward to having a bite with pesto oozing out of the other slices. We did enjoy the veal piccata. This is my first time ordering veal piccata from them. Usually I order chicken piccata. It came with spaghetti. It's pretty good, but I like their pizzas more. Anyway, I will still support them, hopefully they will remember my pesto next time.

Yelp
Back on top! Recent orders have been excellent and when I had a sit down dinner at the restaurant recently the food was superb. Our waitress was a doll, too. Very glad things are back to normal; i.e., delicious.

Dash R.

Yelp
We were immediately greeted by staff with a smile and menus. Served water and bread with butter quickly. The staff was very attentive with our order. The salad and pizza were very good. Love the classic, old world ambience of the restaurant, very fun!

Yelp
Such kind employees, great pizza, free bread as appetizer, the best!!!! We once walked in right before closing and were starving and they so kindly made us a pizza before closing up for the night. Love this place!!!! AND GREAT MUSIC!!!!
