This Charming European City Is Known for 'The Sound of Music' and Mozart — How to Visit

"A petite, traditional eatery set in a roughly 700-year-old building in the middle of the Old Town; Craig Mitchell describes it as a "petite traditional eatery" offering a cozy ambiance with classics and updated regional dishes such as pan-fried sausage, veal cutlet, and Chateaubriand." - Lydia Mansel Lydia Mansel Lydia Mansel is a writer with more than eight years of experience editing and writing for both brands and online publications—with a particular focus on travel, fashion, and lifestyle. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ We had a great experience at Gasthof Goldgasse! We ordered the fried chicken and the burger, and both were delicious—the burger was juicy and flavorful, and the chicken was perfectly cooked and crispy. The dessert was also fantastic, a sweet way to end the meal. The restaurant was clean, including the bathrooms, and the staff were very friendly. A special thanks to the kind and helpful Asian lady who served us—she really made us feel welcome. Highly recommend!

A delightful restaurant attached to the hotel. An intimate setting with great dishes and service. Our son devoured yet another schnitzel declaring it one of the best ever. I went with herbs soup and tenderloin while the missus had steak tartare followed by pike perch. No room for desert but we added a bottle of the now familiar zweigelt grape. A lovely setting. 5 stars all round. Booking is essential.

They sat us, even though we didn’t have a reservation. Very kind. I had the venison, which had a robust flavor. Best venison I’ve eaten. My wife had the boiled beef. Soft and buttery texture. The real highlight was the Salzburger Nockerl. Light. Creamy. Cranberries were a nice acidic touch. The ice cream made it even better. Beautifully done.

One of the best gastronomical experience in Salzburg for us. It’s a wonderful restaurant to taste authentic Austrian food. The signature dessert, nockerl, is well worth the 20-minute wait. Thanks for an awesome experience.

The food is great and is one of the best schnitzel we had in salzburg. Restaurant environment is cozy, we have a great meal. However until when the bill comes , the server reminded us twice aggresively that the bill amount does not include tips. This pressured us and thus we are unhappy and decline to give tips. Then she rudely return our change on the table. We have not encountered such approach before in europe. Other than that , everything is good!

Excellent food. Back here the 2nd time in 2 weeks. This time for dinner. The ambience is much nicer due to less tourist crowds and cooler temperatures. The waiter was very attentive.

The service was fantastic and had great timing on when to bring each course to you. The food was good, but the only thing that really stood out was the apparatus risotto. It was delicious! The rest was well prepared, tasted good, but nothing really left me wanting more.

Goldgasse is a hidden pearl in Salzburg. The restaurant have everything a good restaurant have to have. Good service, good and high quality food, and good ambience. And if you love wine, this is your perfect place to try some of the best Austrians wines, you can also ask for some wine pairing. They might help you for that. A 10/10

Yelp
We have heard about this restaurant from medias and wanted to try out the 2018 Michelin star food. We ordered veal schnitzels with cucumber salad and fried chicken with potato salad. The food was good but certainly does not exceed our expectation due to it being overly priced. I tried their potato salad and it tasted quite unusual, sour with a distinctive order like wet trash. I had no choice but to ask the manager if this is how it should taste. She went back to the kitchen and came back saying this is how we serve our potato salad. She also quickly suggested to replace it with other salad if I like. I didn't. But I did not touch that potato salad anymore. For a Michelin star restaurant. I expected more and for 100 euro plus tip, I should be able to finish my entrée and side dish.

Yelp
We were strolling through Old Town and hungry. Saw this place on Yelp and decided to try it. Goldgasse is located inside Hotel Gasthof. Great service, ambiance, and food. We shared an entree and a dessert. The Backhendl or Austrian fried chicken breast was moist and delicious, with potato salad, cranberry sauce & horseradish sauce, with a squeeze of lemon. The presentation was beautiful! Also got the apricot pancakes which were sweet and tart, warm and melts in your mouth. Service was friendly with a smile. Highly recommend.

Yelp
Amazing service and beautiful restaurant. I had the best steak of my entire life here. There was a great wine selection too. Trying the Salzburg nockerl is a must!

Yelp
It was expensive for Austria and worth the money. We thoroughly enjoyed everything - from the friendly, helpful service, to the delicious lamb, to the nockrel for dessert (I call it the Total Recall, triple boob). Yay! This was so much fun!

Yelp
Excellent food and service. Be prepared, the portions are big. The staff is super friendly and accommodating.

Yelp
Quality food and good service. I would recommend. Well located in city center of Salzburg.

Yelp
The food was very good although on the pricey side. We had the schnitzel and fried chicken, both very well prepared, plus a bottle of wine which came to almost €80. A treaty lunch indeed! Very friendly service.

Yelp
Small and expensive menu. The prices are to be expected in downtown Salzburg. The service was very good and professional. The only thing that was really disappointing was the menu. I did expect a couple more iconic Austrian dishes besides the Wiener Schnitzel.

Yelp
Fantastic traditional goulash and schnitzel (we were told it was the best in Salzburg). A warm and cozy reprieve on a cold and rainy day.

Yelp
Very good service and fantastic food. Well deserve the price. These specialties really made my day here

Yelp
This darling is located in the narrow streets of the Goldgasse district, just a short walk from the Residence. Situated at the base of the Hotel Goldgasse, in the morning, they offer breakfast, but the real charm emerges in the evening when the glow of the lamps beckon you delightfully from the street into its charming and cozy interior. It has a charming rustic feel that feels a little upscale at the same time. The menu is not extensive, but the items they have, they execute well. The fried chicken, is not like the traditional fried chicken that we Americans have come to love, but more of a wiener schnitzel type execution, just with chicken. So if you're ready to bust out some hot sauce and a side of coleslaw, hold back there cowboy. This dish is a bit more elegant and mighty tasty. If you get in early enough (before 5:30pm), they sometimes still have the beef goulash served with delicious bread, which I would recommend on colder days. I don't think I ever saw more than 2-3 parties dining at the same time while we were there (early March), but this may change some during summer months. If you're staying at the hotel upstairs and feeling lazy, this place is a great solution.

Yelp
Fantastic Traditional Austrian dishes and great selection of Prosecco and Wine to pair. Be sure to order the Salzburger Nockerl for desert. Next time I'm in Salzburg I'd like to check out the hotel too as it looks super cozy and stylish.

Yelp
Restaurant: Great location and a lovely patio. Food was from omg great to hmm ok. Service needs improvement. You wait indefinitely for the check. Our waiter never showed up after bringing the dinner. The hotel above the restaurant is not worth it. It presents itself to be something it's not...

Yelp
Unfortunately the worst service we encountered in Austria. Unprofessional and rude! Otherwise the food is decent and the restaurant is located in a quaint little side street.

Yelp
I should have waited for more reviews on this restaurant before trying it out. The menu is kind of incorrect and service is rude. Having tried a few wiener restaurants in wien, the food does not stand out either. It is hard to give more than 2 stars.
