Gebang Sikdang is a homage to the authentic Korean food experience, bringing the freshest of blue crabs caught off the coast of Korea to our intimate true-to-its-roots style Los Angeles tabletop. As someone brand-new to raw marinated crab, but open-minded in my food explorations, I was blown away by the fine dining feel of the meal and service, hidden in an unassuming hole in the wall within Ktown.
Gebang Sikdang offers various set menus, highlighting their premium pick of fresh raw marinated seafood, as well as various additional dishes. They request each customer choose a set menu, which is fair.
You start the meal off with a course of banchan, which is delicious and very well done. Coming fresh from a trip to Seoul, the banchan was a nostalgic and accurate reminder of the deliciousness of well-done banchan. I especially appreciated the variety of flavors and textures within the banchan. The water kimchi and the miso was delicious. Restaurants with a good banchan almost always set the tone of the rest of the meal for me, and Gebang Sikdang did not disappoint.
One of the set options includes a crab already plucked from its shell and mixed with raw egg, while the most popular option is the whole crab and shell over rice. I tried both but preferred the taste of the whole crab in shell, as once mixed with the egg, it had a slightly metallic taste.
I have the pleasure of speaking with the owner of the store, who is not just knowledgeable about food and flavors, but had an impressive background to back up his restaurant business. Although the setting is unassuming, with cafeteria style chairs and plastic privacy dividers separating customers, the true elevation of the meal is in the palate. The place can get loud due to the small space, so it may not be a great idea for nicer meetings, but would be perfect for group dinners out with friends and loved ones.
I tried their salmon sashimi dish as well (okay), as well as their shrimps al ajillo which was a delicious combination of flavors but perhaps not well suited in the setting of the other offerings on the menu.
Highly recommend the traditional set menus of Gebang Sikdang for those of you who want truly authentic Korean cuisine and foodies who enjoy raw seafood. The service here is excellent, and the food is truly delicious. They have a parking lot outside shared with other restaurants, which may be valet on certain busier days.
