Best Austin Restaurant Dishes of 2023, According to Eater Austin Editors | Eater Austin

"I fully admit I am an ice cream fiend but I have been mostly saved from gluttony by not having any shops within walking distance of my house. That has changed with Gelatoro, which makes lovely gelato, conveniently located just a block away from the swimming pool at Shipe Park. There are indulgent flavors like chocolate and honey almond but there are also bright fruit flavors like blackberry chip and, my favorite, kibana (kiwi and banana gelato — the kiwi’s sharpness is made mellow and creamy with the banana). Gelatoro also has coffee drinks so it’s very possible I will be posted there from morning through the afternoon. Takeout orders can be placed in person; there are indoor and outdoor dine-in areas. — Erin Russell" - Nadia Chaudhury

Google
Fantastic gelato. Really good service. Great location and vibes too. Met the owner who was very friendly and welcoming. Really good dairy and non-dairy options as well that taste fresh/good quality. Shame I don’t live in Austin but will definitely be coming back here every time I visit!

Armando Fernandez

Google
Love coming here. The gelato is top notch. The coffee is fantastic. The affagato is superb. Always a great time here. The tiramisu is a must!

Employees were very nice and welcoming. Gelato was delicious.

Google
If I could give this place more stars, I would. Its easily one of the best dessert experiences I’ve ever had. Definitely my new go to treat spot.

Evgeniya Khlopchenyuk

Google
Ice cream in this place is not my taste at all, too sweet and texture as a powder, didn’t like it. It looked better than it tastes unfortunately. Very dirty tables with crumbles on the top. So I went to eat outside. Smell inside is just terrible. Hope it will be changed in the future.

Google
This might be my new favorite ice cream spot! This location has been many things over the years, and I'm super happy with the latest iteration. First off--the vibes! They were playing soothing, classy classical music, which helped me feel relaxed. The flavors! I'm allergic to dairy and they had not one but THREE dairy free flavors when I went. I sampled them and they were all super smooth and creamy. It was hard to choose. And the value was amazing for the quality and quantity of gelato that you get ($5.50 and you can split two flavors). I finished my entire cup and never felt like it was too sugary. Just the right amount of sweet. I will definitely be back! 2025 Update: Gelatoro is STILL amazing and my favorite cold treat shop in town.

Google
I absolutely love Gelato! Been to a lot of gelato places, including many in Italy. This place is at the top. Even better than one of my favorites in the domain! Just wish they were closer to Cedar park.

Miguel Fernando Asensio

Google
The Belgian chocolate and lemon gelatos are excellent and made on the premises; definitely will be coming back to try the other flavors. The Turkish coffee and baklavas also were delicious.

Yelp
Yummy! Visiting Austin and stopped by this cutie little shop :) the gelato was delicious! I got the chocolate and the biscoff flavors. The vibes of the place was so cute too! The staff was friendly and let me try a bunch of flavors and the community board is such a great way to stay connected in a busy city.

Yelp
I hate to write a bad review of a local business, but either this place has fallen off a bit or we went on a bad night. The main issue was two of the flavors tasted like freezer. The one flavor that was fresh (banana) tasted good an had good texture, even if the overall sweetness was not to our taste. But, the freezer flavor in the statiacella and cookie dough was just not right and once you taste it, its hard to un-taste it.
google avatar

Rachel B.

Yelp
Parking is a bit tight but there are sufficient spaces if you're driving. Cute little cafe/gelato stop with homemade desserts along with the smooth and creamy gelato. Some of the gelato tasted fresher than others but all were tasty and delicious.
google avatar

Ben K.

Yelp
Solid gelato place. Really good selection of flavors and friendly service. I do wish that the gelato was a little richer. It is a little on the icy side. To me, that this one of the things I look for when it comes to truly excellent gelato. Overall a great place for dessert. I think a slight tweak to the gelato recipe can take it to the next level.
google avatar

Haeli Y.

Yelp
They share a space with juiceland, just a heads up. There's plenty of seating available indoors and outdoors though. There was no line and she moved fast. They don't have any cones available. The biscoff flavor stole the show! Stracciatella flavor is a classic and you can't go wrong with. The espresso was not strong, hence the color being faint. The strawberry and mango tasted like the real fruits. The blackberry chip reminded us of NyQuil lol However, all the flavors were loved!
google avatar

Cam H.

Yelp
Very bland and almost flavorless gelato. I was expecting it not to be as creamy as ice cream but at least a bit creamier than it tasted. The cashier was also not too friendly. We asked for a description of what the flavors were since there was no signage up yet...and we felt like we were bothering her. Cute vibe and decor. Spacious space to enjoy ice cream.

Yelp
My fiancee and I stopped by right before closing on a week night. Sometimes people are hoping to be done the day and might give lackluster service but the lady behind the counter was super sweet and even served some people that came a bit after closing (two little kids and a mom). This place is really going above and beyond. Their Gelato is amazing, a bit of their own flair and it works. I got the Vanilla Oreo, Pistachio, Biscoff. I will be 100% going back for the Oreo and Biscoff and the Biscoff is absolutely the best flavor in my opinion. Could not be happpier with the spot and can't wait to come back to try some of the pastries.

Yelp
I'm hesitant to write this because I don't want to let the secret out! But, Gelatoro deserves to get some love. This place may be some of the best gelato and sorbet state-side. The strawberry sorbet alone is probably the best i've ever had. As a lactose intolerant person I rarely indulge but I will steal bites of the gelato from my friends, but they have plenty of sorbets as well. Most flavors are GF as well, so they truly have something for everyone! Service is always friendly, parking is tight because it's in an old gas station with a combination Juiceland but it's super clean and bright inside and plenty of tables outside if the weather is nice. On top of all that, they sell Gluten-Free and Vegan goods from It's All Good. You simply cannot get better than that. Run don't walk!
google avatar

Lani L.

Yelp
Sooo yummy! sampled all their ice creams and biscoff is my favorite. Nice family owned small business. A hidden gem in Austin, Tx. Don't leave without trying their affogato. We stopped in to cool off and they did not disappoint. Friendly and very kind people. Love their music too !

Victoria R.

Yelp
First time at Gelatoro! Came all the way from California to this pleasant surprise from bae! I got mango and coconut gelato and the bae got Nutella and stracciatella loved the gelato... but loved loved loved the employee Estella even more! Very kind and brought smiles to our faces! Can't wait to visit next time
google avatar

Alex H.

Yelp
Compared to other gelato establishments in Austin, this one is just mediocre. The baklava was soggy. The gelato was not as smooth and creamy as others I've tried. Service was great.
google avatar

Alex C.

Yelp
I went for the first time the other night and really enjoyed it. The stracciatella was excellent and it mixed in well with the coffee flavor. The small size two flavored bowl seemed generous. I tasted my partners mango, which was excellent, but her lavender was not really for me. I thought it smelled pretty awful inside. Not sure what that was but we got a great table outside and it was a lovely evening. Minus 1star for the smell inside.
google avatar

Beverly M.

Yelp
I had the pleasure of introducing myself, and two of my favorite little girls in the world to this new gelateria. We proclaimed it a winner. Friendly service and the opportunity to try several flavors. Reasonably priced. Italian coffees. Dairy-free options. Easy Tiger pastries offered, too. It was unbearably hot outside but cool inside this new space that is shared between Gelatoro and a smaller version of Juiceland. I settled on Irish Bailey, and my friends chose strawberry and mint chocolate chip. And... gelato is better for you! It is also denser, so you get more licks for the same spoonful!

Crysta D.

Yelp
Will definitely be back! The gentleman behind the counter was so helpful...telling us favorites, most popular and insisting we try samples. They were all so delicious that it made it difficult to decide! We ended up both getting a scoop of chocolate & salted caramel in a medium cup. It was perfect!
google avatar

Thu T.

Yelp
Great new mom and pop shop in town. Reasonable prices and excellent customer service. The staff welcome you with a bright smile and offer you samples. If you have any questions on the flavors, ask them. They have a wide variety of dairy-free option as well. They do offer pastries and coffee but I came for the gelato at first and came back for gelato as well. As you can see from the picture, it is small and it is HUGE. Huge portion packed with huge flavors. They do rotate their flavors but my favorite is pistachio. It's strong, nutty, and melts in your mouth. Parking is a little limited since it's a small shop and they share the location with Juiceland. I'm not trying to be mean, but every time someone comes in for juiceland, in my head, I was like "nooo, go for gelato!!!" Overall, solid gelato place in town. Highly recommended!
google avatar

Pree R.

Yelp
Three stars because I miss the Juiceland that used to be here! I'd even go as far to say it was the best Juiceland in Austin... so to have it replaced by a gelato shop was quite puzzling. I still ended up going here because I was out we ith family in the area, and we were on the lookout for ice cream. So I guess points to the owners in deciding to stake out this location, because it certainly is a high traffic one. Some gelato flavors are unique, and I ended up getting a kids scoop (maybe mini would be a better word? It honestly felt like a small!) of blackcurrant chip and biscoff cookie. My dad commented on how the gelato didn't look like "real" gelato, and I agree. After living in Italy for the last few years, I am accustomed to seeing a solid, smooth melon-ball like scoop when it comes to gelato. But the ice cream still tasted good! Just reminded me of creamy Coldstone ice cream versus Italian gelato. I still miss the Juiceland that was here though.
google avatar

Tracey Z.

Yelp
I was sad to see the Juiceland go but love gelato so whoop for a neighborhood place. The interior is super white and bright. Lots of fun flavors and they let you sample each one. Also they have dairy free options. I opted for the mint chip and blackberry chip. Both were really tasty but did not remind me of gelato, more regular ice cream. Overall though, was happy with my ice cream.
google avatar

Ajay G.

Yelp
Saw that these guys had just opened up so I stopped by! I live in the neighborhood so I was very excited. The blackberry chip here is the best flavor!! I love the combination. The staff here is so kind and helpful and they will let you sample if you ask. I love the interior and I intend on trying the coffee next time I'm here. The interior decoration is also so cozy! This is a must try.
google avatar

Marc T.

Yelp
Went here with friends and I was pleasantly surprised by the entire experience! Friendly staff, welcoming ambience, and delicious dessert. They highly recommend you trying a few flavors before selecting, the more the merrier. We settled with Oreo and raspberry chip (and I don't even like raspberry). The gelato was smooth, creamy, and amazing. I will definitely stop here again when in the area. Great Job!

Yelp
I am not on board with the Gelatoro love fest. This could be a timing issue - I may have caught them on a bad day. The afternoon we showed up the restaurant smelled really bad. It wasn't a mildew smell. If Juiceland had been doing something awful with Durian, It might have been that. But either way, we couldn't stand eating in the main room. We ate out on 45th. The ice cream I had was underwhelming. A bland semi-tasteless Irish Cream. Now to be fair - after I threw my ice cream in the garbage ... The gelato developed an aftertaste that was pretty pleasant. Three minutes AFTER I ate the gelato - My throat had an authentic and very nice Bailey's Irish Cream taste. But ice cream is supposed to thrill you immediately With the kind of orgasmic love experiences that only ice cream can provide. In a town with Thai Fresh, Lick and Jenn's, plus any number of Italian and upscale restaurants that do their own gelato, It is hard to see where Gelatoro fits in. On both non-Italian and Italian ice cream they are kind of beat.
google avatar

Stephanie S.

Yelp
This is BY FAR the best gelato place in Austin. Any gelato place I see, I try. And this one... Just wow. Amazing flavors that are on point with the labels, soft creamy consistency. Amazing. Not much more to say. Oh and he let us try several of them so we could choose, which is very much appreciated!!! We will, of course, be back. Often.
google avatar

Ari R.

Yelp
New little cafe and gelato spot that also houses a Juiceland. Clean, spacious, pretty quiet; it's a solid spot to get some work done. The staff is friendly and is more than happy to give you a few gelato samples. I've only been twice, but there were three whole vegan options available. I tried the strawberry and it was delicious. Last time I went it had the vanilla labeled as good in an affogato, which is great if espresso with a sweet treat is your thing. The portions are pretty big, so go smaller than you would expect, or share a large with someone(s). If you're lucky there will be a few samples of their baked goods available on a little plate near the register. I've tried two different types of cookies and they've both been great. It's not super close by, but I'd make my way here again.
google avatar

Chelsea L.

Yelp
Blackberry and blueberry are great! The blackberry is a bit sweet but I enjoyed the bits in it. Juiceland is also right there, which is very convenient.
google avatar

Marissa G.

Yelp
4.5 I went to Gelatoro for an after dinner treat with my family. The parking lot is kind of small but we were able to find a spot. From the outside it looks small but when you go inside it's bright and spacious. There were two women working at the counter. Both were very friendly and helpful. They allowed us to try different flavors on small tasting spoons. I decided to go with Birthday Cake Gelato in a kid's size which is the smallest cup. It was a gelato with sprinkles and small pieces of birthday cake mixed in. It was really good. It was creamy, cold and sweet but not overly sweet. My family and I are really happy that we stopped by to try this gelato.
google avatar

Rebecca D.

Yelp
This is by far the gelato I've had in Austin. It's a cute spot shared with a Juiceland. The staff is super friendly and the gelato is amazing. They also have vegan options. We came by on a weekday night and didn't have any trouble finding parking in front. Definitely recommend stopping by! This will for sure be our new go-to gelato spot.
google avatar

Jennifer N.

Yelp
Delicious!! Yum! I'm so glad we stopped in after dinner to get some gelato. There were so many good flavors to try and pick from. It was hard to pick just one so we got two. We ended up getting melon and strawberry and both were so refreashing. Our daughter loved it she couldn't wait to eat more of it. The staff is super friendly and accommodating as well as welcoming to let you try the different flavors. We highly recommend coming here for a delicious dessert and we can't wait to go back!
google avatar

Mac M.

Yelp
If you're in the Austin area, you need to treat yourself to this newly opened gelato shop. While the owner definitely had his favorites (and wasn't shy about letting us taste them), we stuck with flavors that caught our eye. My fave? The blackberry chip was a tart-tastic treat. There was also a decadent chocolate/peanut butter combo that was literally one of the richest things I've ever consumed. Given that the eatery just opened, you can tell they're still trying to find their groove a bit. I can't wait to see what new flavors they unveil down the road. But the offerings they have now are all tasty, inspired, and made from scratch in-house. (I may have to go back for the honey gelato that was the owner's fave.) Also, they're open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m -- and serve gourmet coffees and muffins as well. Truly a sweet treat for everyone, including several vegan offerings. Now, stop reading--and go be spontaneous and try this place!
google avatar

Christine Y.

Yelp
The gelato here is really good! I had a difficult time choosing which flavors to get because I liked all the ones I sampled. The owner recommended the banana flavor as one of his personal favorites...and it was surprisingly delicious. Light and subtle but also tasted just like a banana! The blackberry gelato was an awesome flavor blast. A highlight for sure in their offerings. They also have a white coffee gelato that I want to get next time I'm back. I loved the small sample that I tasted. The building is the former Juiceland but the Gelatoro owners have refreshed it nicely with new paint and countertops. It's a pretty nice place to sit with a few friends and eat gelato. Small parking lot right outside the building.

Paige E.

Yelp
Best spot in Austin for gelato. Every flavor I have tried is spot on with new flavors coming out to keep things interesting. The owner is also a really pleasant guy who makes the overall experience enjoyable.

JRam C.

Yelp
Great gelato flavors, blueberry chip was my favorite. Tastes good, they have baklava and coffee as well.
google avatar

Hilary M.

Yelp
So good best gelato I've had in austin by far! Perfect mix of sweetness and creamy I got the kids size Oreo and it was plenty big. I also like how they added a few more spots than the old juiceland had for parking so it was easier to get in and out of than the previous tenant was. Would definitely go back in a heart beat!
google avatar

Priscilla T.

Yelp
Smooth, rich, milky, delicious. I usually come in here for the attached Juiceland but tried the gelato today. Dangerous new discovery lol. Scoops are generous and the flavors are varied and interesting twists on the usual fare (but also has the classics). This will become a regular snack spot for sure!
google avatar

Carmen A.

Yelp
What a great addition to Austin! One of the best gelato shops ive tried here so far. The flavors were on point and reminded me of the gelato places i had in Italy. I had biscoff and pistachio both were very delicious!
google avatar

Ashley A.

Yelp
Came here on a whim and WHAT A SURPRISE!!! They let me try as many as I wanted before settling. And wow the more I tried, the harder it was to choose!! Each flavor is light and so refreshing!! They also said they make all gelato in house and it definitely tastes like it!! We will be coming back soon for more ! Recommend highly !!!
google avatar

Edwyn A.

Yelp
A great addition to the neighborhood and especially on this 97 degree afternoon. I tried their dairy free additions and got the pineapple. It was smooth and just the right amount of sweetness and fruit; yes it tastes like pineapple. I also got the salted Carmel and banana. It's about $5 for a small cup - plenty for two flavors or if you want something smaller they even have a kids cup. All their gelatos look great. They also have an espresso machine with great goods beans if you want something more caffeinated. Make it an affogato and have both.
google avatar

Lauren S.

Yelp
The Turkish Baklava's are sooo good! The person at the counter was super helpful with helping me choose which ones to try, as I had only had basic Baklava in the past, and the ones I chose had a cream added which made the treat extra rich.
google avatar

Sage O.

Yelp
Really friendly staff, clean area and lots of indoor and outside seating! I tried a lot of flavors and the dairy free fruit flavors were really good but I settled for the pistachio and blackberry chip.

Andrea G.

Yelp
Super great! I'd definitely come back. Gelato super smooth and I specifically came for the affogato. Gelatoro definitely delivered! Spread the word, tell all your coffee and gelato lovers about this place. Friendly and super fast service. Great ambiance and music.
google avatar

Vivian F.

Yelp
Run don't walk!!! Amazing gelato. Parking lot is tiny. Shares a building / entrance with Juiceland. Welcomed addition to Austin.
google avatar

Jamie H.

Yelp
DO NOT SLEEP ON THIS PLACE!! Favorite place to get icecream and cool off in Austin. Their gelato is forreal!! Even if you're going for a sweeter treat or chocolate, I recommend their strawberry, mango, or raspberry... this place is amazing and the workers there are always so kind too!!
google avatar

W C.

Yelp
We were here this past week with a couple of our friends. One thing that's important to know is that Juiceland is still here! Phew. We've always loved having this location close to us in Hyde Park because when we want our occasional smoothie, it's always there, and our daughter has always loved going. Unfortunately, the new Gelatoro lacks the cool vibe that the Juiceland-record combo locale used to have. For one thing, there just seems to be a lot of dead space now. Like there are a ton of tables and just a very tiny counter area for the gelato. It seems surprising that they'll be able to afford the rent for such a tiny operation. In terms of the gelato, it's good! But honestly, it seems just as good as or maybe just a tiiiiiny notch above the gelato at Central Market. It's definitely better than the gelato at Uncle Nicky's (although we've recently heard rumors that they're no longer serving gelato, so that might be good for this place). In terms of selection, there aren't that many flavors and we wouldn't exactly call the choices unique. You'll see the usual hits, but everything we tried was quite good. Among the three of us, it was chocolate and oreo. (The Biscoff sample was not very good.) The young lady helping us out was really nice, and while the prices were high, they weren't offensively so. We don't think that this place will make it in the long run because it's just OK and the whole operation is so nondescript, but I guess it's nice to have another frozen treat option in the meantime while it lasts.
google avatar

Yajayra B.

Yelp
Refreshing and flavorful! Staff was welcoming and generous in letting customers taste test the flavors. I had the Blackberry Chip, Mango, and Strawberry -- they were all great!! The strawberry gelato, in particular, gives me flashbacks of the gelatos I had in Italy.
google avatar

Marc S.

Yelp
Gelatoro is worth the visit. Their gelato is some of the better we've had in town. It is creamy and not as icy or artificial tasting as some places. We got pistachio, banana pudding, mint chocolate, and Belgian chocolate. We'll be back to try more of the traditional flavors and sorbets for comparison. Check it out!!

Anne W.

Yelp
Their blackberry chip gelato is the best fruity treat with just the right amount of chocolate sprinkled throughout. Makes me so happy to see that spot be so busy now, especially in the summer. All of the employees are so friendly.
google avatar

Ikeogu I.

Yelp
The best gelato ever. That is all. They go out their way to give the best service. Blackberry chip & biscoff are the best flavors.
google avatar

A W.

Yelp
Our new favorite gelato store. The owner lived in Italy and let us try her newest flavor that she'd just finished making 10 mins before. Just as good as the gelato is the owner Selin - her friendliness and positivity will make you want to come back. Great gelato and a perfect place to take a break from the summer heat and stay cool.
google avatar

Hayley D.

Yelp
My twin sister and I like trying all the new ice cream shops every summer and we came across this Gelato place. The inside is so vibrant and clean. The owner was so helpful and let us know about each flavor and encouraged us to sample everything. Everything we tried was so fresh and delicious. The gelato texture is silky. I would definitely bring my friends and family here. I can't wait to come back!

Cathleen M.

Yelp
Exceptional family run business! Pne of my favourite dessert spots in Austin. Decadent Gelato Flavours. Fast service with indoor and outdoor seating area. The Afogato is heavenly!
google avatar

Alexia F.

Yelp
So yummy! Such nice flavors, lots of non dairy options, and you get to taste the flavors before you pick.
