"This convenience store and sandwich shop is a Parkside staple, selling hearty sandwiches for just $9. In fact, there are 25 different sandwiches — including vegetarian options and an Italian offering with mortadella and salami — all for just $8.50. Breakfast sandwiches cost just $5.50." - Dianne de Guzman, Paolo Bicchieri

Had a good turkey bacon sandwich from here. Inside has lots of options for drinks, chips, desserts to pick from to go with your deli sandwich. Close to the beach so you can grab to go and enjoy on the sand. Easy park available along the street for grab and go.

Google
My wife and I were cruising around the city and we were looking for a great sandwich shop just like the ones I used to get when I lived in the city back in the eighties. We googled and found this place. Sandwiches are fantastic in my opinion but everyone has different taste. I would highly recommend this place next time you’re in the area if you want a great sandwich.

Google
Perfect spot for a quick sandwich to go with a huge selection. Very reasonable prices and fresh ingredients. Grilled chicken, cheddar, and bacon. Chicken pesto. Jenny ( veggie). All on Dutch crunch bread. Service was very friendly.

Google
Always a great experience no matter time of day coming in. And the coffee is always amazing 👏

Google
Really great spot, highly recommend this over eating in the zoo. I got the little puffin and my spouse got the pesto veggie both were really delicious and big sandwiches! Customer service is unreal very friendly and easy going. Interior is really neat and the drawings on the menu board are very well done.

Google
This place is awesome. Part convenience store, wine shop, liquor store, and my grilled chicken sandwich was great. Loved it.

Google
Delicious sandwiches to-go that are super reasonably priced for SF. About $9 for a quality sandwich 4 blocks from the ocean. Hard to beat! Great vibes here. I got the Lil Puffer on a Dutch Crunch, would recommend!

Saralee S.

Yelp
The "Little Puffer" captured our hearts! It looked good on the menu, and it delivered! Crunchy toasted Dutch bread, smoked Gouda cheese, melted with turkey, lettuce, tomato and mayo was the exact recipe for a tasty deli sando! It was fun hanging out in this locals' joint while waiting for our sandos to get grilled. People came in, greeted the owners by name, and without even placing an order, were met with their exact brew of coffee or preferred sando. It made me remember living in San Francisco and the little deli shops that served as hubs of activity all day long for people coming and going. There was a wide array of items on offer, with milk and cream in one of the refrigerators. This kind of local store provides a sense of neighborhood that makes big cities feel like home to so many people!! While we waited, we grabbed a root beer and one of the huge chocolate chip cookies by the counter. The owners made friendly repartee with a customer who grabbed an orange, since she thought she might have a cold! The total bill came to under $15.00, a great bargain and a memorable experience!

Yelp
Location, location, location! Perfect spot, park, grab food, booze and hit your destination. I gotta go back for the food. During my visit I just got drinks, oh and they got me for cookies. They place the cookies right next to the register. No way I could say no. Friendly staff too. Highly recommend.

Yelp
It's been awhile like a good long long long while since I've been here and they didn't disappoint. I called to order ahead of time and the Sammie's were ready when I got there, warm and clearly marked. I've been in pursuit of a good deli sandwich for quite some time and this ranks near the top and I'd come here again. I got the puffer and it's always a delight to see smoked Gouda on any menu. The flavors were on point. They ran about $9/10 bucks each. As always it could use more meat and fillings but overall it was a decent meal. Located in a liquor store it made selecting chips and a drink easy. Staff was so sweet and polite. All sandwich eaters in my party this round agreed-we will be back :)

Karlee J.

Yelp
I am running to this review after devouring my little puffer in Dutch crunch! Their location next to the SF zoo is PERFECT! Skip the overpriced zoo food and get this high quality Sando instead! The friendliest people also! Not to mention their logo?! It's perfect. They have some cool merch! Lots of snacks and drinks. I will be back to try their other sandwiches! Love this little gem:)

Yelp
Come for the sandwiches, stay for the friendly family running the place! But seriously COME FOR THE SANDWICHES. We stopped by after a run in Golden Gate Park and I will honestly be driving across the city for my deli sandwiches from now on. They have been in business over 35 years! And it's not telling why. You can immediately tell they are passionate about their deli and the food they make. The bread and vegetables were so fresh and the array of toppings and options was so fantastic. I got a tuna sandwich on sourdough with the works and a giant pickle from a massive jar served in a little paper envelope. It was the perfect lunch. Also the sweet Nonna, bless her heart what an angel! We'll be back very soon!

Ruta G.

Yelp
Discovered George's Zoo while searching for a sandwich spot near Ocean Beach, and it turned out to be a great find. The mortadella sandwich on sourdough was delicious, and was less than $10!? The staff were friendly, and I enjoyed the zoo-themed decor inside the restaurant.

Yelp
I had just went to the zoo and wanted to eat something close by. I saw that there was this deli across the street from the zoo and decided to try it out. I was welcomed very nicely by the people working there, and even the customers. The atmosphere of the place is great. The service was amazing, they were so patient and friendly with me. They have a good selection of vegetarian options, I found it hard to choose. I ended up choosing the Veggie Pesto sandwich with Dutch Crunch bread. It was really good. Unfortunately, my reading skills failed me today because I didn't have my glasses. I didn't know that the sandwiches came with all of those toppings! I had already finished half of the sandwich before I realized there was mustard and pickles! I don't even like mustard or pickles!!! I couldn't believe that I had just eaten a sandwich without gagging from a pickle. It was so good that I didn't even notice it. With all those toppings and the quality of the sandwich, I think it is priced very well. I would definitely come back here for the friendly people and great food.

Yelp
I love it, I love it , I love it. Shoutout EDER, shoutout Phil his wife and everyone that works there. Sandwiches are good as hell. I recommend the Turkey sandwich with Peperoncino, the chicken pesto, tuna melt, chicken parm. And don't get me started with the Vanilla Iced Latte, every time I order one I gain 5 more years to my life span. If you come to this holy monument of a store an angel gets it's wings. Also the zoo and the beach are nearby. Ambiance is amazing they always have the bangers on and the prices are to die for. It also doesn't help that I live near by it.(They need to retire my jersey) 30/10

Patricia G.

Yelp
Came here as it was nearby the place I was staying and the reviews were good. I got the Little Puffer and it was great! Tasty and affordable. The cashier was nice and courteous. And the spot reminds me of old school delis! Would go back when in town.

Karla Z.

Yelp
I remember I use to love eating the sandwiches at George's, they were delicious and thick sandwiches. Years past and decided to go there today expecting the same deliciousness.Man was I wrong, the sandwich was very bland, it had one thin piece of lettuce and tomato barely any meat and sprouts. Never going back again, what a let down. I only gave them 2 stars, one for the people that work that are very nice and the other for the variety of snacks.

Kevin C.

Yelp
There is little about the outside of George's Zoo that would draw one's attention to it. Located at the corner of 44th & Sloat in San Francisco (yes, across the street from the San Francisco Zoo), it is a hidden gem in The City. Upon first entering the store, it looked to be just another convenience/liquor store. Then I noticed the deli counter and perused the selection of sandwiches on their menu. I ordered a turkey sandwich on wheat bread with tomato, mayo, and dijon mustard. This simple sandwich was simply delicious! I've been back to George's Zoo a number of times to order the same thing. In addition to sandwiches and beverages, George's offers a variety of sweet treats -- cookies, muffins, donuts, etc. -- on their front counter. I don't know anything about the ownership, but George's appears to be a family-run business. The hospitality offered by the employees was impressive. I was made to feel appreciated for purchasing my lunch there. If there is any down-side to George's, it's that there is no seating area where one can enjoy the excellent lunch. Fortunately, just down the block is another establishment which has both indoor and outdoor seating. Of course, there is also the option to take my lunch to Ocean Beach and enjoy it with a view of the Pacific Ocean. I highly recommend George's Zoo for a tasty, healthy, affordable lunch.

Yelp
Do you take SNAP/EBT Cards? Or do I have to call your manager to confirm I may stop in someday your sandwiches are great at $9.95 see you soon Kenneth

Yelp
Zoo York Minute A little slice of NY here in SF, as the obviously East Coast owners bring the corner bodega concept 3k miles west--and with great success as they are celebrating now over 30yrs in business. The Good: *Sandwiches are the life bread of this outfit, with a large menu that features over 25 signature sandwich options, from the meat centric to veg-head friendly options. *Bread was good and def fresh. *Friendly service *Large drink and alcohol selection *Nice selection of tater chips, which are a must when getting a sammy. *Fantastic location just a short walk from the SF Zoo and Ocean Beach. The Meh: *Veggie Pesto sandwich was a little, um, lackluster... It could've used some more ingredients to "beef" it up, so to speak. I guess they expect people to get all the accouterments (e.g., lettuce, tomato, etc) but "some people" are offended by "salad" on their sandwiches and burgers. *insert eye roll here* The Ugly: *Purchased a couple of Coke® Zero™ and they were piss warm. I'm not sure if their fridge is not very cold or if they were just loaded. Next time, I'm grabbing them out the back. TLDR: Great spot to grab a sammy and some drinks before you hit the beach or visit the zoo.

Yelp
Now I love me a good sandwich! This is such a cute little mom-and-pop deli shop to stop by for coffee, sandwiches, snacks, pastries, liquor, etc. The owners are so sweet and friendly! My boyfriend and I stopped by here before going to the San Francisco Zoo (PSA: you are allowed to bring in food and water into the zoo)! Now I've been seeing people hype over the Dutch crutch bread because as stated in the name, not only is it visually crispy but the texture is as well. I got the Lion House sandwich which is roast beef, swiss avocado, with Dutch crutch bread. I enjoyed my sandwich but thought a tangy mustard sauce would pair well with it. However, it was super satisfying to eat because I was so hungry before the zoo. We also got their hot vanilla latte which my boyfriend really enjoyed. I thought it tasted like any other vanilla latte I've had but it was still good since it was a gloomy and chilly day in San Fran. I absolutely recommend stopping by here if you visit SF and want something quick to eat. I would come back here to try the other sandwiches :)

Yelp
If you ever need a Sandwich that'll make u forget the pain of everyday life, the little puffer will do that. Great service, beautiful staff, elite sandwich options, overall perfect neighborhood sandwich/liquor store and I appreciate its existence.

Stephanie D.

Yelp
Love their sandwiches! I've been going to George's for a long time and they have remained consistent in their quality and options the entire time.

Yelp
First time trying this place today around 615pm walked down from the beach quick little 10 mins walk... I was a little skeptical because I've never had a sandwich from a liquor store/ deli but WOOOOOWWW this place is a GEM!!!! Don't sleep on them foreal!!!!! Super friendly when we walked in. The store is very clean and they were Very helpful! Menu is nice and easy to read. The sandwiches were super fresh from the bread to the meat & veggies. I couldn't put my sandwich down! My husband as usual scarfed his toasted pastrami down like it was no tomorrow and w the bacon too? Ohhhh ... talk about Heaven On Earth! Definitely returning anytime we are in the area! No question!

Juan V.

Yelp
The Beach and the Zoo is nearby and there are limited places to eat around this area. I wanted to try this place ever since I was a kid every time I passed by here. Came in and saw a whole menu of sandwiches. Got the Italian sandwich and it was tasty. There is lots of different choices of drinks and chips. Good place to grab a sandwich and enjoy the waves.

Jeff H.

Yelp
George's Zoo is a great place to stop for a sandwich or a drink on Sloat. The owners/staff are friendly. I love how you can get a breakfast beer before a bike ride in the morning. They have other carbohydrates like coffee, piroshkis and sandwiches. Good times!

Elaine N.

Yelp
George's Zoo is a solid little cornerstore/deli spot right across the street from the Zoo. I've always driven by but finally got the chance to stop by and check it out. I dropped in for lunch on Friday and everyone was so warm and welcoming. I ordered the Pastrami Melt on Dutch Crunch which was served with lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, sprouts, mayo and mustard. I opted out of the onion and added some pepperoncini and jalapenos. The sandwich was made fresh and was delicious, I ate half then, and saved the other half for a mid-afternoon snack. Solid spot, I'll be back again for my sandwich fix.

Theresa C.

Yelp
Hit or miss experiences at this place. Nice selection of beverages and snacks, and I can appreciate that it has been here a long time and is an institution of the neighborhood. But like a lot places that have been around a long time, they don't appear to care much about customer service all the time because they'll always have a lot of business (from zoo-goers, etc.). I would say the sandwiches are consistently good, not always great - sometimes they don't have much meat in them - and the lady that works here is so freaking grumpy sometimes that I think twice about going as often as I would like to. There is no shortage of sandwich shops around the neighborhood; I'd rather go somewhere where the staff's grumpiness doesn't rub off on you as you leave and make your sandwich taste bitter in your mouth. The reason I do come back once in awhile, grumpy lady or no, is because you just cannot order an RJ's Invention anywhere else that I know of. But if I'm in the mood for just turkey or literally anything else, I will now end up at Yonkers or Lou's or Grubbin'. RJ's Invention is a *really* good sandwich though - pastrami + chicken salad - who knew?!

Debby N.

Yelp
Their Italian sandwich is pretty good! It's not like Lou's where they use a special secret sauce ...which is super addicting, but every now and then I enjoy a good sandwich and this place is it! There's simplicity at George's Zoo deli and sometimes that's all I need to hit my craving. It's a decently sized sandwich made with fresh ingredients. The shop is owned by kind and friendly neighborhood folk. They're locals and welcomed us to the 'hood. Not too far from the beach... whatever you need, chips, wine, beer, ice cream, kombucha, fruit, a fresh sandwich, coffee- they got it! Perfect if you're needing a quick errand.

Peyton ..

Yelp
George's is one of those spots you never get tired of eating. The owner Phil is awesome, as is the rest of the team.

john j.

Yelp
My kids were visiting the zoo and decided to get something to eat after. They called me for a suggestion. Go across from the zoo corner grocery store you won't regret. They text me an hour later thanking me. 2 adults 2 children they all liked it. Friendliness and prompt service.

Patricia H.

Yelp
Great local place! I noticed that Yelp's photos didn't show the current menu prices (George's Zoo's official website prices are also out of date). So here's a picture of the menu prices as of May 2023. Sandwiches are mostly $9 or $10, still a good bargain in SF!

Sam V.

Yelp
Great sandwiches, prices, and service. Always treated with a smile . The beach is right down the street. You can't beat it .

Zach H.

Yelp
Love this place like a brother .dudum. Family and I go way back. Much love for their sandwiches and nice merchandise

Chris W.

Yelp
Best sandos in the city, by a long shot. Great price, cool staff, and amazing sandwich!!

Marg L.

Yelp
A local favorite! Great sandwiches & a good variety of drinks... what's not to like when getting a sandwich & drink to go & hit the beach?! The staff are helpful too. :)

Al F.

Yelp
Just go here, before the beach, before the zoo, in the morning, at night. For coffee. For a sandwich. For snacks. For drinks. The owner is the best. His staff is amazing.

Shahin A.

Yelp
The best people serving amazing food. Friendly neighborhood little market with the best sandwiches and more! Something for everyone.

Adrian H.

Yelp
And this is a nice place variety of animals didn't see any elephants though place is clean I highly recommend checking it out

Aliyha M.

Yelp
I stopped and got the BLTA without the tomato and it was AMAZING. The customer service was also AMAZING. I loved the decorations all around the store. Definitely one of my favorites now.

Tien L.

Yelp
Our local deli and market! George's has a great selection of wines from all over the world. They carry a Certified B (certification signifying a company with sustainable and ethical practices) white wine that I really like and is under $15. I have yet to try out their sandwiches, but I've stopped by George's several times for candy, ice cream, and wine. Everyone behind the counter has been very welcoming!

Jesus G.

Yelp
Amazing sandwiches, beer selection, snacks. The staff are really nice and owner is really nice too. Love this place!

Michael S.

Yelp
Grabbing a sammy, at George's Zoo, solo alone, with no crew, went for beef or ham, not something new. Then I saw egg salad, not often on the menu. Seeing it there is already a coup. But this particular egg salad is now my new go-to. Tasted familiar- it's deja vu. Just like at home, only egg, salt and pepper, with mayo as the glue. No celery or pickle - those overdo. And never mustard - that I eschew - in egg salad it's way too frou-frou. Nice and simple is best, thank you beaucoup, not from the fridge, they make it fresh on cue. My visit wasn't planned, it was impromptu. So much good food around, in this gourmet milieu. But this sandwich was so good, there should be a queue. I'm already planning a return, to this venue. We'll have an egg salad super rendezvous. I didn't want to write just another review, so this time I decided to rap it at you.

Chad P.

Yelp
The coolest place. I used to come here when I was a kid with my parents before going to the zoo and was in the neighborhood and had a total flashback! One of the OG spots is still the same. Sandwiches are 5 stars spectacular. This place is the best. Special place in my heart. There aren't many places like this left. This place is a treasure and should be made a SF landmark.

Kyren O.

Yelp
Good sandwiches, decent prices for the grocery items also. Staff is great and the owner is super nice.

Christian T.

Yelp
Went here for water for our hotel room. Left with many snacks. Owner (?) was very helpful and offered me a deal on some products, that although I did not buy, was still nice to have offered! 5/5 for hospitality.

Miranda P.

Yelp
Loved the sandwiches, great place. The pastrami double meat was amazing. I can't wait to go back.

Bobby B.

Yelp
Best Damn Sandwiches in San Francisco!! Try the Californian!! Guys are super friendly!

S. Y.

Yelp
So glad we stopped in before our visit to the zoo.We had delicious sandwiches and will definitely be back!

Sf L.

Yelp
The best service and food ever! How it is that I am just discovering this gem is beyond me. I will definitely be returning.

Stephen I.

Yelp
If you surf SF you have to add George's Zoo to your food stop. Hearty sandwiches and Surf Wax specially formulated for cold water formulation can be had. Favorite stop on the way to surf nearby Ocean Beach and iconic Fort Point (on those rare winter NW swells).

James C.

Yelp
SUPPORT THEM. AMAZING staff and AMAZING sandwiches. Enjoy and enjoy supporting a family run store in a great community.

Alyson D.

Yelp
This place is soooo good and affordable especially given SF prices. The three bean salad and salad sandwich were amazing. Everyone that works there is so friendly too

Tizoc A.

Yelp
Best sandwiches ever! Good spot if you're staying nearby, all the staff are friendly and they got what you need, if you're staying at ocean beach, do your shopping here!

J W.

Yelp
Best sandwiches in SF? Lol 5 dollars for a fresh bfast sammie or 8 bucks for a deli sandwich, friendliest and sweet family owned. Every thing is priced fair, I enjoyed both my breakfast ham sandwich and my Reuben later in the day. Money saved and money well spent. Be back every time.

Kevin B.

Yelp
San Francisco hidden treasure!! Love this place and I have been going here for years. Great staff. Great food everything you could want!
