Great addition to the downtown Santa Rosa restaurant scene!
•service - walk up, take a menu, stand in line (while watching the busy bustle of paella making), place your order, take your number, and find a seat. The spaced delivery of drinks, tapas, and paella, intentional or not, was perfect. Gerard himself was greeting people at the door and explaining the ordering process. He was frequently checking in with customers and even bussing tables as needed.
•space: a patio that opens up to 4th street; beautiful and cozy but could use some background music (saw mounted speakers so I’m sure that will come soon)
•food & drink: the sangria was delicious and refreshing for a hot summer day in SR. The spicy “angry sauce” on the papas bravas was good, but I personally wish it was spicier. Some of the larger potato piece could have been cooked a little bit longer. The breading on the calamari was crisp and tasty, though the squid meat was on the chewier side. The paella was perfect, as expected, and next time I will definitely added extra meat (only $4). One order can easily be individual portion, but recommend splitting it if you’re indulging in the tapas or pintxo. Additionally, +1 sustainability point for using paper straws instead of plastic!
Overall: great ambiance, location, food, and drinks. Besides some minor tweaks (and this was the first week they’re open), Gerard’s Paella will surely be a hit among foodies and casual eaters alike in Santa Rosa.
