The 34 Best Athens Restaurants | Eater

"For over 90 years, this traditional tavern has sat in the same spot beneath the Acropolis, among the colorful little alleys of the historic Plaka district. Named for Theodoros Kolokotronis, one of the greatest heroes of Greek independence, the restaurant serves classics like moussaka, meatballs, tzatziki, and all kinds of roasted and grilled meats. While the food is good, the ambiance is even better. A couple of hours spent among the locals, singing and dancing to live Greek folk music, could make any outsider forget they’re just in Athens for a visit. [$$]" - Demetrios Ioannou

⭐ 3-2-1 Review 😬3 Things I Liked: *Vibrant atmosphere — the whole street was buzzing with energy *Delicious meal with great flavor and presentation *Fair pricing for the quality and experience offered 🤐2 Observations: *Service was okay but the staff seemed stretched between tables *No complimentary dessert or treat like other nearby restaurants, which was disappointing 🙃1 Thing to Know: *Book ahead if you want a good outdoor table — it gets busy fast! 😃Personal Experience: What a vibe! We had an incredible evening with great food and a lively atmosphere. The street setup is unique and makes the experience feel special. Service was friendly but slow at times, and missing the free dessert at the end was a letdown since other places in the area offer it. Still, it’s worth visiting once for the ambiance and to soak in the local buzz. ❣️Show some love If you found this review helpful, please like it and follow me on Google Maps. We really enjoyed the dancing accompanied by live Greek music which was a unique experience. However, food was only average and a bit disappointing as we were served a meat platter with dry burnt overcooked steaks, and overly oily calamari. The salad and moussaka were fairly decent. The staff weren’t very attentive and we felt neglected by one guy specifically who didn’t seem to care much. Atmosphere was okay, a bit loud with the music and chatter. There was a cockroach crawling on the wall and across the table. Yuck

Went here as an impromptu dinner spot after a lovely welcome from the waiters and were not at all disappointed. The orange juice was fresh and I tried the tomatoes with stuffed rice for the first time - these were cooked so well and full of flavour. The seating was nice outside with some lovely live music as well!

Amazing atmosphere with great food and excellent service. Beautiful setting with live music on the weekend and traditional dancers. Excellent drinks and reasonable prices. The baklava is delicious, and the orangepie is rich and tasty. A great place to spend an evening.

I was there last night, food and atmosphere was ok. BUT BE CAREFULL FOR WHILE PAYING THE BILL!! Instead of bringibg the bill , the person came with credit card machine. We requested to check the receipt and the person was very mean and said “no, this is the new way’. We were very upset and had to fight for the receipt to control it before paying. It was very disappointing!

Visiting Geros Tou Moria Restaurant was one of the highlights of my entire trip! 😍 The food was so delicious — full of amazing flavors and super fresh. Every dish was a delight. 🍽️🤤 The atmosphere was incredible — cozy, beautiful, and just the right vibe for a memorable evening. ✨ What made it even more special is that they sang for me for my birthday 🎶🎉 and surprised me with a birthday cake! 🎂🥳 The staff were warm and made me feel truly welcomed. 💛 I highly recommend this place if you’re in Plaka, Athens — it’s an experience you won’t forget! 🇬🇷💫

I had an awkward experience here. I am a half black half white American, and I’m not sure what exactly it was, but the staff treated me very strangely especially when it was time to pay. It was as if they didn’t think I was going to, because they were hawk eyeing my every move it seemed. Also, some of the patrons would point and murmur and it just felt very uncomfortable. At this point I have been to quite a few bars and restaurants and have never felt like this, and I don’t exactly know what it was about me that made everyone behave so strangely here. On a side note, the life music and the vibe was very nice and interesting, so as a local or someone who looks like a local, you’d likely have a better experience. I wanted to like this place but there were just too many moments where I felt like a zoo animal that I just can’t recommend for others who look like me. The lamb chops were okay but very chewy and not quite as good as other places nearby. Good luck!
