Where To Eat In Carroll Gardens - New York - The Infatuation

"Pretty much every neighborhood in NYC has a cute, casual Italian restaurant where you can grab dinner for around $40 per person. In Carroll Gardens, that restaurant is Gersi. The long, dark space has enough exposed brick and candlelight to qualify as romantic, and the menu involves red-sauce classics like spaghetti al limone and tagliatelle bolognese, as well as some more seasonal items like grilled asparagus and various vegetable-topped crostini. Focus on the pasta, and don’t ignore the free bread that comes with a bean dip on the side." - neha talreja, bryan kim, willa moore, will hartman

"The bad news is this Carroll Gardens Italian spot only offers pickup and delivery Thursday through Sunday from 4-9pm. The good news is this gives you something to look forward to during the week. 17 Top Restaurants and Bars in Cobble Hill - Eater NY

"This cash-only, casual neighborhood restaurant serves inexpensive northern Italian fare, like a very simple spaghetti al limone and tagliatelle bolognese. At brunch, there are various egg dishes like poached eggs polenta with shaved fennel, prosciutto di parma, and parmigiano. As expected at an Italian restaurant, the wine list is mostly Italian, though there are cocktails, too." - Kayla Kumari Upadhyaya

I really enjoyed brunch here. So many options. Dishes that are great for sharing. We shared everything (5 people). I enjoyed the French toast, polenta and kale salad the most. But everything was great. Looking forward to going back.

Google
Great little Italian spot with a well thought out menu and lovely food presentation. The staff was great and the chef made some amazing brunch for us. Bellinis were delicious.

Google
We had an amazing dinner at Gersi BKL. We ordered kale+spinach gnocchi, clam linguine, octopus carpaccio, and trout with sautéed veggies. The food was just amazing and great portion for the price. My baby loved the gnocchi. Bread and cannellini were on the house. The staff were also very attentive and kid-friendly. The place itself is so cute as well. Will come back for other dishes because they all look so delicious. Thank you Gersi.

Google
We came here for NYE dinner and it was packed and had a great energy. Full tables inside and on the outdoor heated backyard. Service was great, especially given how busy they were and food and drinks did not take too long. The spicy rigatoni is actually very spicy, unlike similar dishes at other restaurants. Everyone enjoyed their meal!

Google
Worth it for the bread and coffee alone. The brunch was lovely, perfectly seasoned and prepared. Crunchy but soft potatoes, savory sausage, yummy eggs.

Google
I love to write reviews of local restaurants that just do everything great. I'm. a pasta snob and very few restraunts prepare pasta correctly. The cooking of the pasta is a simple thing yet most overcook it !! Gersi prepared it perfectly ! The Lemon Pasta was excellent. Kale salad was huge !! Polenta dish was great. Nice portions of authentic food !! BTW: Pro tip, add shrimp to the Lemon Pasta !

Google
Delicious food, consistently good, and the staff is very friendly. What prompted me to a write a review is the thoughtful takeout order. It felt really good when I opened the bag at home and I saw that they included their delicious bread and white beans. The small things matter! The brunch menu is quite extensive and has way more than eggs and toast. I'm always pleased and surprised by its quality, so I recommend it effusively.

Google
Gersi is a weeknight go to for me and my husband and reliable for a late reservation for a larger party. It’s always busy; but they also always have space. But I was really blown away last weekend when I hosted a large brunch here and everything was phenomenal. Brunch is delicious! The French toast wow! The food was well coursed, the staff went above and beyond, and they were all so accommodating to our table decor and making it a special meal. Thank you so much! Gersi is the best!

Yelp
I went back to this restaurant a while ago with two others for brunch as the coffee shop next door was jam-packed. This place by comparison was pretty quiet with a handful of people and eventually, there was a lot more. The staff was a bit overwhelmed and it took a very long time to get everything so if you don't have a lot of time to spare, I might suggest another place for brunch even though I think the food was outstanding. As per dinner, they give you some excellent focaccia along with some delicious beans which are very garlicky. I went with a dish that I haven't had in a while which are Baked Eggs also known as Uova al Purgatorio or in other words, Eggs in Purgatory. This humorously named dish consists of said poached eggs baked in a somewhat spicy tomato sauce. They have the traditional version listed as Pomodoro Parmigiano (for $13.95) which you can also add house mozzarella (+ $4.50) or eggplant (+ $3.50) for extra but I went with something unique which was the Ragu With Meatballs & Sausage for $15.95. By comparison to the usual dish, the meatballs and sausage as well as the meat sauce added an extra richness to said dish along with more texture. The dish also came with some bread to dip in said tomato sauce. This was an excellent take on a personal favorite. The others also liked their food. As I liked the dinner here and I liked the brunch even more, I'll bump it up a bit. For the area, this has become my second favorite Italian place to Noodle Pudding and that is saying something as there are way too many Italian places in the area.

Yelp
This Italian spot in Cobble Hill is so intimate and cozy. We came in for a quick date night and were seated within minutes. The space is small with tables quite close to each other, so it can be a bit loud on a busy night. I do like the dark ambiance with the table light and simple floral centerpieces. To start off, I had the Ginger Margarita ($14) while the fiancé had the Gersi Manhattan ($14). You don't often see a Ginger Margarita, so I enjoyed this drink a lot especially with a piece of real ginger to top. They also brought some toasted bread with some garlic cannellini beans. This was an interesting pairing. I'm not really a fan of beans, but this was not too bad (or I was starving too). For our main courses, I had the Bucatini Carbonara ($24.95) and the fiancé had Chicken Parmigiana ($27.95), which were both items on their specials. The carbonara was so creamy and cheesy. As much as I love cheesy, it got a bit overwhelming and heavy towards the end --best to share this one. It's a good spot for a nice, Italian meal but nothing too special from all the Italian restaurants in the neighborhood. They do offer 3% discount if you pay with cash though.

Yelp
Food was mixed. Pasta is not their strong point based on my order of spaghetti and meatballs. Meatballs were small dry and tasteless. Sauce was a creamy tomato which again was tasteless. Their calamari was great, gem salad very good and branzino was very good. Service was a bit slow and forgetful.

Yelp
A cute and cozy Italian restaurant in the heart of Carroll gardens! Managed to get a Friday dinner res and Gersi did not disappoint. The chicken parm was absolutely delicious and cooked to perfection. A little hectic as the restaurant is pretty narrow and we were sat right next to the door however our waitress was really sweet and attentive.

Yelp
We have had two visits here and both were stellar. It has a cute neighborhood vibe with having sophistication. The inside is intimate and the back garden is covered and is nice. The prices are great and a bit lower than other Italian spots but don't let that fool you, care is taken with the dishes. My husbands chicken parm is the best I've had. My branzino was a nice portion. It was served with arugula and I ordered delicious roasted cauliflower as a side. Our first visit, we ordered just pasta dishes and the squid ink pasta was a stand out. They do take reservations and be advised to do so, as this place is popular.

Yelp
My favorite pasta restaurant! The pasta is always delicious and they usually have seasonal specials. Their back garden in the summer is also really pretty!

Yelp
So, so, so delicious! My twin sister lives nearby and we had some friends visiting from out of town. One of us is gluten free, so we wanted to make sure to find a place that would have plenty of gluten free options. Gersi is definitely one of those places! My sister has come many times, so it was highly recommended. We were seated quickly, even without a reservation, and the waitstaff was incredibly friendly. Of note, one of the servers was incredibly responsive refilling our waters -- such great service! The worst part about Gersi is having to pick only ONE of their delicious pastas! Seriously, everything on the menu sounded spectacular, and it was almost impossible to pick what to have for dinner. In the end, a few of us selected the lemon pasta, which was 1000/10. Highly recommend if you are in the area!

Yelp
Gersi is one of those places that is solid for dinner & brunch. I had a great experience on both occasions. The dishes were delicious, the service was great, and the price point was solid. We split several of the dishes - good portions! For Sunday brunch, we shared the french toast, and everyone was raving about it. They have a nice selection of drinks as well. The ambiance in both the main / back patio is nice. I would recommend getting reservations. They get busy and you want to avoid the long waits. I can't wait to go back soon!

Yelp
I've heard about how good this place is from friends and it really delivered on my visit. Loves: + Pasta is yum. We had the homemade spaghetti cacio e pepe ($20), handmade tagliatelle bolognese ($23), and rigatoni siciliana ($23). I liked everything. + Loved the sweet pepper and ricotta crostino ($11) + Easy to get same day reservations + Indoor seating but also heated garden seating + Really sweet and patient staff Maybe too premature to say after a single visit, but Gersi could very well be one of my fave restaurants in Cobble Hill. :)

Yelp
Fabulous service and food! And the ambiance is very cute - especially in the garden. My cousin came here for brunch last Sunday and I have to say I was pleasantly. Our waiter was very sweet and accommodating. Our food was delicious. I had the Italian Cobb salad and my cousin had the French Toast. Both looked and tasted delicious. I highly recommend doing brunch here.

Yelp
I love this place!!! The chicken parm is delicious and so is the shoshito peppers. Service took longer than expected the last time I was there but the food made up for it!

Yelp
Had a quick dinner here with some friends after hanging at a little game lounge across the street. The staff that greeted us as we came in was super friendly, and we sat immediately. It was a very warm day, (and perhaps the AC wasn't working) but the fans right near the tables kept us very comfortable, shoutout to the team! I was pleasantly surprised by the house bread that was served with a white bean spread - a really unique choice that was very flavorful! To start we got the Ricotta Crostini & the Mozzarella di Bufala (these were okay, but I wouldn't get them again. The size of the Mozzarella was pretty funny in retrospect to pay $20 for.) Our pastas (forgot to take a pic of the last one dropped) were definitely better, and my friends seemed to enjoy their meals, even if we all wished a bit more from the portions. I specifically had the squid ink pasta, and it was really decent & the calamari perfectly grilled. Not sure if there was a dessert menu, because we weren't offered one? But shoutout to the bartender for making one of the best lemonades I've ever had!

Yelp
Gersi has some good food in a nice setting. I highly recommend the black gnocchi, which is unique and not seen much on menus or at all. It was a great flavor, a big portion, and full of seafood. The kale caesar is very good as well as was the lugging with clams. Also, a big portion.

Magali D.

Yelp
Nice set up and backyard. The food is good but not great: the basics are good (example ragu) and the wine list is good too.

Tasha N.

Yelp
Best chicken Parmesan and tiramisu we have ever had. We will definitely be returning again for more. Service was excellent. Ty

Yelp
I absolutely love Italian food! Everything was so good I don't have not one complaint. The service was great, the server was really knowledgeable when it came to the menu. My fiancé had a kale salad it's so big two people can share, I had a pesto pasta it was absolutely amazing! I can taste how fresh it was. If you're looking for a really good Italian restaurant try this place you will not be disappointed!

Yelp
Went one month ago--- waiter forgot our drinks, apps, and even one of the guests entire orders. Talked to manager- and was offered one glass of wine. Good food but understaffed and no accountability

Yelp
This is my favorite Italian spot in Carroll Gardens! The pasta is so fresh, and they have a really cute heated garden in the back, as well as sidewalk seating and adorable indoor seating. The waitstaff is always very pleasant, and they offer free delivery if you live in the area. Honorable mention: Gersi's Instagram page! Their posts always make me smile. They are constantly highlighting their employees, from birthday posts to simple appreciation posts. It looks like a positive, healthy environment, which is rare in the restaurant industry. If you're ever in Carroll Gardens and in the mood for great pasta, check this place out!

Diana M.

Yelp
We came in last week again for drinks and it was great. The bartender there knows his stuff and you can order whatever you want and he is up to the task. Sometimes you go and order off menu and the drink isn't right, but he always has it. I love how they decorated for the holidays. We had a great time, ordered a few apps and had a few drinks. Great spot for a parent night out!

Yelp
Really good italian food! It brings me back to italy. Our party of 6 shared a lot of appetizers and entrees. But my favorites were the burrata, kale caesar salad, chicken parm, and gnocchi.

Yelp
My Cobble Hill-residing friend lured me to her hood with the promise of neighborhood brunchy goodness followed by cute kitty playtime at her place. The kitty playtime delivered--the brunch at Gersi did not. The Penne Pomodoro and Basilico was so undercooked as to be almost inedible. The sauce was too salty and the penne felt like pencil erasers. The complimentary bread and bean dip was better, but that's not saying much. And my Bellini was too sweet. We sat in the back greenhouse area, which was supposed to be really great, but just felt like a loud, plastic-enclosed soundgarden, with all the screaming young children near us.
google avatar

Juliette P.

Yelp
We had never been here before and I was excited to try as it came up on a list of places with gluten free options. We chose to sit in the back enclosed garden as the restaurant area was very full and loud. The back was much nicer. Once seated, I noticed that the menu didn't specify what was gluten-free except for a pasta. The waiter was very nice and went back the kitchen to the verify my choices. Some other waiter brought bread -- which went uneaten and no one offered a gluten free option. I had the sautéed calamari -- which was basically rubbery calamari in unflavored oil. My husband had the winter panzanella which he said wasn't bad and the persimmon offered a nice touch. For main courses, my husband had the cacio e pepe which he said is normally a bit creamier, but was okay. I had the grilled polenta -- and that was a bit meh. Basically, it was a square of polenta topped with fennel, loads of prosciutto, and two slices of cheese -- a flavor palette that did not work for me and a structure that looked like about a minute or less prep. Maybe it was my selections, but I wasn't a fan. My husband would give it a 3-4 stars but I felt under-impressed sadly.

Karen K.

Yelp
Food is excellent. Good service . Have eaten there a few times& has been consistent . Will definitely return again

Yelp
Pretty solid pasta spot with great drinks and seasonal pasta options! We ordered the tomato bruschetta, brussel sprouts, corn and ricotta ravioli, lamb ragu parpardelle and squid ink pasta. For drinks, we got a Lambrusco and the white wine sangria. Everything tasted amazing but the corn and ricotta ravioli and parpaddelle lamb ragu stood out the most! The brussel sprouts were disappointing, feels like they just roasted it and threw cheese on it. They have an outdoor backyard patio area, which is super nice in warm weather. Service was great too!

Aaron R.

Yelp
Best Italian I've found in Brooklyn. Their toast spreads are phenomenal... my favorite was liver on toast, garlic a close second. Everything here is top notch. Staff super friendly and outside seating is a nice plus on a warm day.
google avatar

Don O.

Yelp
Fair prices, fresh pasta, decent vibe with extended covered heated eating area in the back so bigger than it seems. Good service. Yummy garlic beans and focaccia instead of a standard bread. We got kale salad with grilled chicken, lentil soup, better pasta and a side of salmon, and orrechette with broccoli raab and sausage. Nice glass of white wine and a hit coder with bourbon. Everything was perfect. No complaints at all. Will return.
google avatar

Yelp
I've been to Gersi for both brunch & dinner, but this review is for brunch specifically! Menu had a lot of options but was not overwhelming, a good amount of options for vegetarians as well. We got the eggs in purgatory, steak & eggs, and roasted potatoes. More than enough for two, ended up being very filling but none left over since the food was so good! Only took one star off because they seated everyone closely together even with multiple open tables. Full review below: Food - brunch specific! Eggs in purgatory was the vegetarian dish we ordered, delicious & very filling. Steak and eggs was pretty average but a solid choice. Very generous side of roasted potatoes. Service - overall pretty attentive but you may have to wait for water / the bill if they're busy Insider tips - go on a nice day! There's beautiful backyard seating you can also rent out for parties & private events. The restaurant doesn't really start filling up until 11/11:30 on the weekend, and they also give complimentary white bean dip & bread (: Good for - date night, brunch with friends

Tina G.

Yelp
Amazing food! Perfect portions! Fresh ingredients! Yummy wine! Warm hospitality! Family friendly! Fell in love with the high chairs - I've never seen such comfy chairs for mini foodies. The clams, bruschetta, salmon, and tiramisu were my favorite! Can't wait to try something new next time!

Yelp
Small little place that feels just like Italy! Service is amazing....everyone is so warm and friendly. I came solo for a quick lunch after reading amazing reviews for the Spaghetti al Limone. I absolutely love a good simple pasta and light but intense citrus flavors. I was greeted by the friendly host and give a beautiful window table to people watch. He highly recommended the same dish and said it's a classic on the menu. He brought our some free homemade focaccia bread with some cannellini beans soaked in olive oil. This was perfect to warm my appetite up for my bowl of pasta. Now for the main star of the show....the PASTA! OMG, this simple but divine lemon sauce was so so delicious! So simple but so bright and satisfying. Perfectly cooked spaghetti, lots of acid from the lemon and tons of cheese...you can't go wrong with this dish. GET THE SPAGHETTI AL LIMONE!!!! I'd come back over and over for this dish alone. AMAZING delicious food with great service!!!
google avatar

Yelp
We recently went back and enjoyed our time in the backyard patio. The food is good, and the environment is very pleasant. I really enjoyed my cocktail, it was expertly made (a manhattan). I particularly liked the variety of different pastas, we went with a black gnocchi which was a little dense and a carbonara which was great.
google avatar

Sophie S.

Yelp
Gersi was such a vibe, and really great for a date night or a place to catch up with friends. It's been a while since we went, but I do recall getting nice pours of very good red wine. We both got pasta, which was chewy and thick and al dente which are all things I personally LOVE. Its a solid spot in Carroll Gardens!

Brenda R.

Yelp
Fabulous food Everything we had was delicious! We were a party of 8 and service was excellent.

Yelp
WOW. We were planning a special gathering a few weeks ago. We live out of state. Some of our guests do as well. I reached out to Mark and he was wonderfully helpful and prompt with responses. He gave us lots of options. The dinner was fabulous! Each food option was a favorite for someone. The food was delicious and plentiful. The servers were excellent - around when we needed but not hovering. Refills were quick, extras brought quickly. Mark checked in with us several times to make sure all was well. It was a GREAT night for our gathering - the service, food, ambience all outstanding. We plan to visit again when next in town. Several guests were so impressed - they plan to visit again as well. THANKS

Yelp
Not what it once was. One of the main selling points I always kept in my mind about Gersi was that they had fresh handmade pasta. I was here 3 years ago and the tagliatelle bolognese was delicate and amazing. Props to them for surviving the pandemi and they're still okay today, but the linguini in the linguini alla vongole seemed packaged and the spaghetti was questionable. I understand times change and it's difficult to maintain high standards but I'm dissapointed their handmade pasta has faltered.

Yelp
The best Italian restaurant in the area - and top 2 in BROOKLYN Amazing pasta and fish. Great drinks and excellent service

Yelp
Sometimes you go in to a restaurant with no expectations and find an absolute gem of a place. Tucked into a sleepy street around Cobble Hill, the restaurant is easy to miss without a storefront advertising its name. It's small and cozy inside without a lot of seating room, but opens up into a large covered patio with a lot more space. Our table for 7 comprised of a picnic table and folding table pushed together, which actually added to Gersi's intimate charm. They're known for their handmade pasta and would be the obvious choice to order. Our waiter was knowledgeable and decisive, giving solid recommendations based on our preferences. I had the tagliatelle bolognese; the meat sauce was tangy and sweet without being overly sour, and the noodles were cooked to perfection. All the other pastas my dining partners got also received rave reviews. Reading prior Yelp reviews, I knew the panna cotta was a favorite. As luck would have it, their special of the night was a hazelnut panna cotta. It was a perfect combination of creamy and light, and was made even better with a generous pour of chocolate sauce on top. So glad I saved room for dessert this meal!

Yelp
Sitting in the garden on a summer Friday night, felt like we were transported to Italy. We started with a burrata, which was a large portion of beefsteak tomatoes and creamy burrata. It was delicious. We also had the mussels and a couple pasta dishes which were good. Tiramisu for dessert was also delicious. We will return.

N R.

Yelp
Went in on a random weekday and thought this restaurant was just average. Definitely other similar priced Italian that taste better. Got the bruschetta and 2 pastas. Bruschetta was a 5/10. Just average but even bruschetta I've made at home tastes better sorry to say. The cacio pepe tasted like butter noodles to us. The papardelle was good! Not the best version of this dish we've had but solid nonetheless. Our drinks were tasty and well made. Bread with the beans was a nice touch

Yelp
Gersi is a delicious gem in Carroll Gardens! Me and my 6 besties gathered for a rescheduled B-day dinner. The food was amazing! The broccoli rabe with anchovies appetizer was everything a broccoli rabe & anchovy lover DREAMS of! Lots of tasty creative appetizers and salads! Huge portions too! What's not to like?
google avatar

Grace S.

Yelp
Gersi is a favorite of mine for Italian. I didn't like eggplant parm until I went here! The back patio is quaint and great for a group dinner. My one complaint is I wish the brunch menu had more pasta options.

Jessica D.

Yelp
We loved everything about our experience. The servers were friendly and prompt. The food and drinks were amazing!!! We had a few gin basil smashes. We started with anchovy toast and burrata. We're not typically a pasta family but each of us got a pasta dish and fell in love. Our favorite was the spicy bucatini. We sat inside, however the back garden looked delightful as well.
google avatar

Sharon W.

Yelp
Had great food here in the past. This time the food was still very good, but more spiced than usual, including the bread that had red pepper added to it, which was kinda weird. Also I miss the white beans that used to come out along with the bread prior to the meal. On some positive notes, we loved the tiramisu and our waiter was super friendly and attentive.
google avatar

Anthoney G.

Yelp
Cute , cozy spot but don't underestimate its size from outside because what it lacks in in space it makes up for in the size of its main courses We made it there early before the dinner rush so we got the best of the chef I think ;-) My pork chop was yummm & my partners chicken was also delicious I had some refreshing fresh grapefruit juice :-)
google avatar

Yelp
Based on the encouraging reviews, I decided to spend a Saturday here for brunch. The place has warm cozy feeling. It was not crowded and many tables were empty which I guess is a bad sign for a saturday brunch in Brooklyn where you have to wait at least 20 mins for a table in other restaurants. Anyhow, the food was overpriced and the service was mediocre. I got a couple main dishes and a couple appetizers. Nothing was memorable. while the food was not terrible, but definitely is not a 4.5 stars based on yelp reviews at the time.

Yelp
Sunday is about surrounding yourself with love. After attending 5 apartments viewing my partner and I became super hungry we had out local restaurant @gersirestaurant where the FOOD was so fresh, so tasty, so wonderful. The staff was kind and generous. I highly recommend everyone to stop by @gersirestaurant . . .

Yelp
Neighborhood restaurant that really has it all - casual, intimate ambiance, friendly service, and decent prices. Food: their olive oil is so good and is clearly used on a lot of their dishes (yum!). Lots of salad and veggie options, as well as fish and meat, and then of course their homemade pasta. People with all types of dietary preferences would do well here! Service: easy going while being attentive and friendly Would go here for a weekday date night, dinner with friends, really any occasion!
google avatar

Carol S.

Yelp
Very cozy neighborhood spot with the type of menu which makes it hard to choose. All of what we tried was delicious and generously portioned. Wine list almost exclusively Italian with many bottles in the $50-60 range. Pleasant service too.

Elizabeth K.

Yelp
Overall I'll give it a 4 but I have notes. Some of the dishes were much better than others. Homemade pasta was worth it. The Brussels were not very good and the appetizer was not enough food to make sense of the price. Overall don't think I'd go back but glad I tried it.
