East Bay Restaurants Serving Up Comfort Food for Takeout and Delivery | Eater SF

"Best known as one of Oakland’s top destinations for inexpensive, reasonably high-quality sushi, Geta is also the king of convenient Japanese comfort foods — namely, rice bowls like oyakodon, katsudon, or katsu curry rice. Open Tuesday through Saturday, 11:30 a.m.–2 p.m. and 5–8 p.m. Call in for takeout only." - Luke Tsai

Geta Sushi Review - Piedmont Avenue - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"Oakland is a casual sushi city, and our favorite spot for it is Geta. All of the rolls are under $9, and the chef’s choice sashimi combo is $20 - a great value considering you get around 10 pieces. Timing is important here: you'll want to get to Geta by 5pm to secure a spot on their waitlist (it tends to fill up for the night by around 7:30pm), and don't bring more than three people. There are walk-in closets in Piedmont bigger than this place." - Lani Conway

Been here 2x now (dinner about 10days ago and lunch today) and finally writing a review. BEST family/small sushi restaurant probably in the surrounding zip codes! We usually go to RnR Sushi a few minutes away, but after trying Geta, RnR is a backup now :) Geta isn't big (a little more than 20 seats), so if you arrive at peak mealtimes, expect a wait for a seat (this place is popular & you'll see lots of takeout orders being picked up too). On Xmas eve (today), we came at 130pm for a late lunch b4 they close at 2pm, and we got the last 2 seats at the sushi bar (they place was still full when we left at 2pm). I went with a friend who doesn't eat much raw fish (he likes only raw tuna, otherwise he says it's too 'fishy'), and a friend who has been to some VERY nice/expensive Japanese restaurant/sushi places, and they BOTH like Geta and want to come back! That says a lot! We all thought the prices are reasonable given the portion size preparation, and freshness. We def like that they call their CA rolls "real CA roll" because they use real crab, not imitation crab meat. The avocado tuna roll was delicious - generous amount of tuna. The tempura was great - came out hot and crispy, the batter thin (not thick or gummy). The Agedashi Tofu appetizer was so melt in your mouth good - soft fluffy tofu with a thin crispy shell in a light sweet soy sauce (one of the best agedashi tofu I've had in the Bay Area), and I finally tried monkfish liver! Def ck out Geta if you're in the area :) Attentive, helpful, and friendly staff. Lots of specials - look at the various postings on the wall after you're seated!

Google
IMO best sushi in the area. Freshest hotate nigiri. Amaebi is the best in bay area (not exaggerating). It comes with the shrimp head fried and also very good! Rolls are pretty good too but they certainly specialize on the nigiri/sashimi type. The menu is also always super cute doodles🥺🥰food comes out pretty quickly too!

Google
This is so small sushi place with only few tables set up, so don't expect to get in so easily! But the food is so good, the fish is so fresh and everything is authentic and of high quality. It's my favorite! If you order the sweet shrimp sushi you also get the head as tempura! Gyudon was a bit too big even if shared between 2 people but we also ordered many things so that might be more of the reason.

Google
New to the area but I feel like this is one of those local gems. Small establishment but big servings. Highly recommend their fried oysters (really fresh) and deluxe nigiri sampler. We're definitely coming back for their omakase option.

Google
Geta was a wonderful small sushi restaurant, it was quite nice and cozy and the food was delicious. It was a bit busy when I went, so the food came out a bit slow, but I found it odd that we had to ask for refills of tea, when the teacups were so small. Otherwise, it was perfect. Would go again.

Google
This is a small but cozy restaurant. Walked in during a rainy day and the food is beyond expectation. The Chirashi Don is fresh and well seasoned. Uni nigiris are from local (definitely worse than Hokkaido ones :) but still worth trying. Service is attentive as well.

Google
A tiny "hole in the wall" with a take out spot vibe, Geta's humble environs downplay what is the best sushi in Oakland. This is not a spot with an expansive roll menu that dazzles with sauces and fire, but more of a place committed to the craft and quality of the best possible nigiri and sashimi (plus some classic rolls like a real crab California) -- all at extremely reasonable prices. Tremendous quality, and a variety of fish not often seen, Geta sources the best local and Japanese seafood products. Coming here for me is exciting! This isn't a fancy restaurant, nor is it large. There are three tables that hold 4 people. And a bar that seats 4. The majority come here for takeout -- even though they shun doing business with food delivery apps. You gotta call, or show up in person to place an order. My strong recommendation is to dine in alone (making seating at the bar easier) or with one friend who loves quality like you do, or to come to the restaurant before placing your take out order so that you can select from the "curtain" of hand drawn specials cards. Where the standard and take out menus only showcase a basic selection of classics, one of Geta's secrets is the list of special items on offer -- a list almost as long as the standard menu. The other secret, barely advertised, is the omakase menu of either 10 or 15 pieces. It makes for a very special and relatively quick meal -- would be awesome to come here before a movie or a concert. The service is very efficient yet pleasant -- they know what they have here and how small it is. They want you to eat, and really enjoy it, but then move along. I love it!

Google
Super delicious and affordable! I had always heard great things about this place, and now I know why. The sushi was huge and very affordable. The donburi was bomb. Even the little treat they leave with the bill was yummy. The place is small, but it’s lively and full of energy. I love a lot of sushi spots in the east bay, but this one might be near the top of the list!

Yelp
I'm so amazed from the amount and quality of fish you can get here. Found this hidden gem in piedmont avenue. Place is small and seating is very limited. I really loved how quick they were with the food. I came with my mom and toddler. The space is like being in Japan, very small so if you bring strollers be mindful to fold it. I was lucky and was able to tuck it behind my table and away from others. If you're here the deluxe nigiri roll is so good and flavorful. Every bite was so wonderful. Salmon and tuna were buttery and smooth. The eel was so juicy, and the wagyu was so yummy. But best was the creamy and decadent uni! We also ordered a combo of salmon teriyaki and karrage! Portions were huge and came with rice, salad and yakisoba noodles. It was so much we brought it home. Dragon roll 8/10, eel and shrimp were cold But good. Salmon and avocado roll was my favorite 10/10.

Yelp
Lovely little sushi spot in Piedmont Ave. The omakase option is gone now (they just removed that from menu ~2 changes ago). Their kaki fry also changed :( they're smaller now but you get an extra piece. Overall, good experience. Their nigiri deluxe sampler was just like the memory. The staff were very nice and polite to everyone too. One thing I do want to note is that there's a price adjustment. I don't recall it being disclosed anywhere in the menu though.

Yelp
First time being asked to provide ID when presenting a credit a credit card in any oakland restaurant. I was told this was policy and when asked where the policy is stated they didn't have it listed anywhere. They communicated that this is asked of every patron that uses a credit card because of credit card theft.

Yelp
Always good to the last drop of rice! Been coming for years and will continue to do so as long as Kosuke sensei is behind the knife!

Yelp
I tried Geta for the first time recently, the food was great, the prices are a bit higher than other local sushi restaurants, but the fish is great quality and big portions. My only complaint is that the restaurant is incredibly bright, so I'd recommend coming during the day or getting take out. Service was great!

Yelp
Geta used to be my favorite sushi place in the bay. Small, mostly takeout place with a few tables, with friendly and efficient staff. Their specialty rolls are a bit on the pricier end but lately their portions sizes have decreased significantly. The 49ers roll at $20 used to be packed with real crab but our last several orders that amount kept shrinking to the point where you can barely taste the real crab. Disappointing! Guess I'm back on the hunt for a new favorite sushi joint

Yelp
Geta is perfect for groups of 2-4. The most genuine Japanese restaurant in the bay. Japanese music in the background. Food is fresh and service is fast. It is not a place to lounge around and be loud. Always 10/10 at geta!

Yelp
My go-to for tempura & sushi. They do a bustling takeout business, offering limited seating in a tiny space. Many loyal return customers from the nabe, reasonable prices. If you want to snag a table for date night , yr best bet is be there when the doors open! Or solo dine seated on tall stools ringside to the Chef. Free tea & water offered to the lucky diners-in!

Yelp
To be perfectly honest, before my first visit here, Geta had been on my radar for so long that I actually wasn't sure what I was more excited about - finally getting to check out their food for myself or being able to strike them off my list of places to try! After having more than a few friends recommend, and after having seen them pop up in my Yelp feed seemingly every few months, it's almost like having a constant reminder that I needed to check them out. Given that, it's safe to say I was more than a little relieved that they didn't manage to disappoint! Now, when my friend forewarned me before coming here that getting a table might be tough, I didn't realize it was because of how small this place is! With just a handful of counter seats and even fewer tables, Geta can definitely fill up quickly. Despite their small stature though, the menu is surprisingly large, with a good variety of offerings, ranging from small plates, bento boxes, and udon to an interesting mix of donburis, sushi rolls, and nigiri. More importantly though, not only did everything sound good on the menu, but just about everything looked even better in all of the photos that I was able to scroll through before it came time to order! Some things looked so good, in fact, that I practically made myself come back a second time before writing this! -- ANKIMO - Monkfish Liver...$14 (https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/geta-oakland?select=QQOvUCs4-0zMFLFqIzEyMw) I'm sure the fact I haven't had ankimo in ages had something to do with it, but this was terrific! The portion was generous, the ankimo has luscious, and the dish, as a whole, was just so flavorful. Would absolutely definitely get this again. -- SALMON BELLY NIGIRI - Fresh Salmon Nigiri...$9 (https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/geta-oakland?select=bKype6cGWJRr9jAjeK6JVg) I love salmon, so I'm extremely biased, but this was fantastic! The cuts were both fresh and generous and not overly fatty either. Most importantly, they were just straight up delicious! -- KATSU CURRY RICE - Fried Pork Cutlet with Curry Rice...$20.50 (https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/geta-oakland?select=y2EiAJ201BLXgMr8mRY8vw) More solid than spectacular, but no less satisfying. The katsu was crispy, the pork itself was juicy, and there was a fair amount of veggies. As for the curry, it was good, but I wish it had a bit more punch and a thicker consistency. -- MISO SOUP...$0 (came with the Katsu Curry Rice) (https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/geta-oakland?select=_0A546ry55BOUZJVDhu_WA) I wouldn't normally detail miso soup, but this one was really, really good! It looks different than your generic miso soup, but in a good way, as it has a nice miso flavor to it and was filled with more than your generic bits of tofu, green onion, and seaweed. -- NIGIRI SAMPLER - Maguro, Sake, Hamachi, White Tuna, Ebi Tako, Ika, Tsubugai, Tamago, Inari...$34 (https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/geta-oakland?select=NcgDgjaJ7flqJ29L4peYfQ) Fairly standard, in both good and bad ways. The assortment of fish is somewhat basic, but the taste and quality is pretty solid. Of the bunch, the hamachi and salmon were my favorites, but I wouldn't say anything fell short. That said, I can't help but wonder if I should've tried the Deluxe Nigiri Sampler instead. -- KANPACHI NIGIRI - Fresh Amberjack Nigiri...$12 (https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/geta-oakland?select=cVi9-LtYfNbi6-0FmfmoQQ) This was a last second add based on the server's recommendation and it wasn't too shabby! I'm not the biggest fan of amberjack, but this was one of the better ones I've had. Still, I think I'd rather save a few bucks and get the sake belly again. While most of what I've tried here has been good, the best part of my meals at Geta has actually been the service. Across both of my trips here, the staff has been super warm and friendly. They were more than happy to answer questions about the menu and were really helpful with some of their recommendations. If I was out here more often, and if they were possibly just a smidge cheaper for some things, it's more likely than not that Geta would be one of my go-to spots for sushi. However, since they're on this side of the Bay, I guess they'll just have to settle for being my go-to for sushi whenever I'm around Piedmont.

Yelp
Always wanted to try Geta and finally got to do it during Thanksgiving break yay! Cute and very small and cozy place. Only few tables so come prepared for the scene :) I did not as I came with my child and stroller hahaha but we made it yay!!! Staff is friendly and food comes out quick! I love the cozy feelings you get inside and the kitchen is right there making their magic happening. Loved sharing the miso soup, mackerel and salmon Nigiris, negihama and unagi rolls. The warm light sake was delicious as well. Generous portions of fish, fresh and great prices. Would come back again with my husband or a friend!

Yelp
I haven't been here in a few years. I ordered the chicken teriyaki with shrimp tempura. Two of them were $47. Wow! Prices have really gone up. I enjoyed the food. The shrimp tempura could have been cooked longer. It was done, but the batter was whitish. The portion sizes were smaller as well. I should have taken a photo. The chicken had a lot of fat on it. I probably won't return again for a while, but I enjoyed stopping by for a bit.

Yelp
Nestled at the corner of 41st street, the infamous pint-sized Geta serves up decent sushi at affordable prices (for Bay Area standards). My friend and I came just before 6 and got seated almost immediately. Do keep in mind that they require the whole party's presence before seating you, but such is expected when the restaurant literally has just four tables. We split a Karaage don, rainbow roll, and agedashi tofu to share. All of which were great! Albeit far from the best I've ever had but definitely won't leave you disappointed. The roll came double layered with fresh fish atop and almost bursted at the seaweed seams with crab salad. The Karaage Don was incredibly decadent, leaving my friend and I with ample leftovers. When the bill arrived, we were shell-shocked upon seeing the total price and just ogled the low number for minutes. I could wax poetic about the food's quality and price all day. The restaurant's eccentric decor includes cute Japanese stickers showcasing the daily specials which is a nice touch. Next time, my friend and I will probably share two rolls and maybe a special. I get the hype now. Though the price looks standard on its face, the portions are huge without the sacrifice of quality.

Yelp
Very limited seating but delicious food! They give fairly generous portions in their don buris and the sashimi was quite good. Rather nice that they have a large parking lot next to them too.

N O.

Yelp
Geta stopped offering the tofu steak dinners. I went there exclusively for this dish. Sad to see it go. Gone too are the bento boxes?

Chris S.

Yelp
Such a gem. We ordered two holiday platters for Christmas (takeout). One was rolls and the other nigiri. To my surprise they also came with a large assortment of sashimi. Everything was amazing. Big platters with big pieces of melt-in-your-mouth fresh fish and delicious sushi rice. Fresh crab in the CA rolls. The platters came with lots of sides like miso soup, gyoza, fried rice, and more and dessert, all of it of the highest quality. I actually called them back to say they might have given me an additional order that wasn't mine, but they assured me that all of it was included. So much fun. I ordered in person on Christmas Eve and it was easy. Pickup service on Christmas was friendly--they even helped carry it to my car. I paid with a credit card and Geta asks for ID, which another reviewer gave them a bad review for?? Wow, get a 1 millimeter bigger pocket and enjoy Geta's craftsmanship and generosity!

Yelp
The fish is high quality and fresh. That's all you need to know, but in case you need more convincing.. It's very cozy. Although you can't watch the chefs cut the fish like you do at a traditional spot, it mimics the ambiance with limited seating (only 4 tables, and 4 seats at the sushi bar) and Japanese-style decorations. We ordered miso soup, edamame, a selection of nigiri a la carte, and chocolate mousse. The fish slices are huge, a bit large in proportion to the rice, but no complaints since it's great value. You can't go wrong with any nigiri selection, but this is what we ordered- - Salmon - Tuna - Toro Tuna Belly - Yellowtail Belly - a favorite - Kurodai - a favorite - Unagi Eel - a favorite - Scallop - Saba Mackerel - Kamasu Japanese barracuda - one of the specials - Shima Aji Striped Jack - one of the specials We got there at 450pm on a Saturday evening, though it turned out, we didn't really need to be early. After everyone was immediately seated at 5, there were still a couple empty tables. Even so, service is fast to get you in and out as fast as possible. Overall, an excellent neighborhood sushi spot!

Yelp
It's been a long long time since I've been to Geta. Came in 10 minutes after opening. No line. I was shocked! Promptly seated and order taken. Friendly service. Server told me the specials and I ordered the sashimi special and spicy tuna roll. Enjoyed it all. They have some more unique fishes than you'd get from your standard sashimi order, there was a piece of uni, scallop, ikura, salmon belly. Fish was fresh. Knocked a star down for oddly cut pieces of fish. Some was sliced, some parts were not, & ended up being a block of fish that I had to cut myself. Also my roll wasn't tightly rolled & pieces would fall apart as I was picking it up. Your standard fish. Pricier, which is expected, but a little pricier than it should be given inflation.

Yelp
Amazing sushi, noodles, and more. You know you're in for something special when you're cheerfully greeted by the staff coming into this tiny shop. We had an assortment of maki rolls and nigiri, the fish was so fresh and tender it melted like butter. The soba noodles firm and delicious. We were lucky to get there early because it quickly filled up, and folks were waiting although lots also picked up take out orders. The chef/owner is super nice, and little cartoons of the menu decorate the walls and counter. Geta is a rare gem.
google avatar

Jamie H.

Yelp
Salmon is great! Very cute little hole in the wall with lots of take out orders. I've always gotten a seat for 2 during lunch ish hours. The tables are very close together, so get to know your neighbors but everyone is so nice.

Mookie F.

Yelp
If you eat here, bring a lot of cash with you. If you don't, you will see a "price adjustment" line item on your check, which is their 4% surcharge added to your bill for using a credit card.
google avatar

Alex L.

Yelp
This place is tiny and that's why it's so good. Essentially a cranking take out joint, Geta has 4 four tops, and 4 bar seats for lucky folks who manage to make it inside. Upon entry, the energy is BIG. It's sensory overload in a way that feels very "Tokyo." Pulsing "good times" Japanese music and energetic staff great you in Japanese. The wall space is adorned with small laminated pictures of menu items are everywhere (many things also NOT found on the standard menu). Not a fancy place but a quality place in its own right. It's no frills other than the quality of the fish. The fish. So simple, so fresh, so fast, so delicious. The hot kitchen leaves a little to be desired (the gyoza are store bought), but the hamachi melts in your mouth and the nigiri slices are generous. I've said it once (twice, three times) and I'll say it again: best sushi in Oakland.
google avatar

Andrea M.

Yelp
It's been years since the last time I've been here, until my friend and I decided to pop in for lunch today following an errand. Happy to see Geta is still going strong! This is a super small but popular hole in the wall sushi place, that provides quality sushi at decent prices, with hospitable service. When I say it's small, I mean there's 3-4 tables, and a few seats at the sushi bar, so be prepared to wait outside if you come at a busy time (they don't accept resies). There are bars nearby where you can grab a drink while you wait. Once seated, pay attention to the cute little cards on the walls showcasing the current specials! There's a lot to choose from. They have a small but good sake menu, which helpfully grades the sakes on a scale in terms of sweetness to dryness. All in all this is a solid little sushi spot. Try to plan your visit during non-peak hours. Enjoy!

Ava M.

Yelp
The atmosphere is not it. We got sat at a four person table (my partner and I) and they sat another couple with a baby at the same table. One of the parents had to hold the baby the whole time. However, the food was good. So if you come with a group of 4 you'll have a good time.
google avatar

Hannah J.

Yelp
Attentive service and cozy ambience. Chirashi don is well seasoned and fresh. Uni nigiris are from local but still worth trying.

K C.

Yelp
Have not been here for many months and when I called in my order. I thought geez, person taking phone order was very swift and right to the point. Maybe she was just busy . At pick up. She was so rude and loud about it. I heard you why you have to speak so loud. Almost like she was trying to make a scene. I just did not appreciate her speaking so loud. Maybe she was deaf! Food is always excellent but I. Now have to think of I want to go back and be treated like I did not know . I am trying g to support small business but that person who answered the phone and person at the register were like 2 different people. I dont know!?!

Olivia L.

Yelp
please please please bring back the tofu steak! it is the only good vegetarian/vegan thing on the menu and was previously one of my favorite meals in the world. i am heartbroken that it is no longer on the menu!

Jason G.

Yelp
I love it here. I've been coming to this place for years. This is the Jason roll and the sashimi combo.

joe b.

Yelp
What happened to you Geta? You used to be everyones go to for fresh reasonably priced sushi? Got 3 nigiri specials and every piece tasted old and stale. Wasnt expecting Jiro sushi but at 34$ an order at least something edible. The japanese convenience market across the street had way better sushi at 16 dollars a tray. So disappointed See photo of fish red food coloring staining the rice red for the maguro. You dont get this at a real sushi place.

Yelp
What a find! Just a stone's throw off of Piedmont Ave, Geta Sushi is THE PERFECT little hole-in-the-wall joint! We slid into this itsy-bitsy place about a half-hour before their lunch hours were over, and the staff could not have been more gracious. In no time we had our menus, water, hot tea, and miso! We shared a cold, deliciously dressed salad, yummy salted edamame, and then out came our rolls and a piping hot and delicious teriyaki bowl! The cooks even sent out an extra fried roll - how kind and lovely is that? The spicy tuna & avocado roll was perfectly flavored, the 49er roll was HUGE and delish with that expertly thinly sliced lemon on top, and the fried CA roll was on point! Our adorable server Giselle was a delight, and made the entire dining experience perfect! (What server checks to make sure everyone at the table gets all three flavors of the Hi-Chews with the check? It's THAT kind of attention to detail that makes a dining experience special.) This place is tiny, with two tables and just a few seats at the sushi bar. but they do a robust take-out service, so if you can't grab a seat, grab it to go!
google avatar

Tom K.

Yelp
Love this place. Can't go wrong with anything on the menu. It's a hole in the wall place but if you can't get a seat, the takeout menu is legit. Servers are super nice and accommodating too.

Yelp
I came to this place very long time ago, probably 10+ years ago with my mom and really enjoyed how homie the place was. Today, I tried to get into some kind of line to even get into the restaurant and the waitress dismissed me when I came in because she tried to see if I was a takeout order. She said there were two people in front of us. She started to write down a name for me and said my name wrong and asked for a phone number. After butchering my name I tried to give her my other party members name and instead of trying to write down a name or number after she shooed me out. Another customer comes in and sits at a table with two others who have finished eating and just orders. Another customer walks in and immediately just sits at the counter. I don't understand what the miscommunication was and I wait outside for another 20 minutes and the same waitress just continues to prioritize phone orders. Two customers leave and we wait another five- ten minutes and no one even moves to clear the area. Unsure if the food has changed or what the quality is like, but the service was so unbelievably bad I'd never come back.

MM C.

Yelp
This is a cozy Japanese restaurant that had a charming, intimate atmosphere with only a few seats. We decided to try the chicken don and tuna rolls. Chicken Don is absolutely delicious! The chicken was tender and perfectly seasoned, served over fluffy rice with a delightful sauce that added just the right amount of flavor. This little gem is perfect for a quiet meal! Staff are super friendly and attentive.

Yelp
Place was small and the food was ok. Maybe I didn't get the right item but I liked the place but it wasn't over the top for me. The restaurant had a cute layout and it looked very homey. I would come again and give this place another try one day.

Yelp
i've been waiting to come to this restaurant for over five years. Finally, I get a chance this year and end up in Oakland area so I decided to give it a shot. The experience was great. The food was amazing. And the overall restaurant decoration is very cozy and makes me feel very comfortable to sit in there.

Yelp
Lunch today was at the counter, and it was the 10 item nigiri sampler: Maguro, hirame, hamachi, tako, ika, tsubugai, sake, ebi, tamago, Inari. Fantastic trip around the sushi world. Slices are as always generous and the rice is well cooked, not gunked together and not flimsy either. The salmon was so good! I got into a conversation with Chef Kosuke about the various fish in the display and ended up deciding for 2 slices of salmon belly. He was so very kind to make this extra special: adding a slice of Toro nigiri freshly grated Wasabi root. Talk about over the top! Both fish were the creamiest! Literally melt in my mouth. Just over the top excellence. And it was a typical day for here. Always good.

Yelp
This is a time and tested and beloved (and authentic!) sushi joint in the neighborhood. Excellent food service and cute interior albeit very small dine-in area (could probably seat 6-8 at most with 4 counter spaces). Seems like most of the customers are loyal and mainly coming in for take out. We came in for an early dinner while walking around on Piedmont Ave. Everything tasted fresh, including the humble chicken teriyaki. The shrimp tempera that came with the teriyaki dinner set was also outstanding. I also recommend getting the crispy REAL California roll with real crab. But don't even try ordering imitation crab rolls afterwards once you've the REAL California roll. Just not the same, trust me on this. I also had the baked scallop roll which came with heavy mayo sauces that were waaay too creamy for my taste (I could only stomach a few)- but, the scallop slices were very succulent. I don't think I would repeat this one. Next time, I plan on getting the chirashi bowl! Great find and thank you Yelp! There is a surge charge/convenience fee for credit card but no biggie. Go early to beat the dinner rush.

Yelp
Came here on a Friday afternoon a few minutes after they opened. Ordered 5 rolls to-go since they aren't doing dine-in and paid in cash - if you use a credit card, there is an additional surcharge. Rolls are more expensive than I remembered and quality has gone down (compared to before). Pretty disappointed in the actual sushi itself. We got a salmon avocado roll, shrimp tempura roll, spider roll, dragon roll, and spicy tuna avocado roll. Rice was cold and it was sloppily made - clunky and unevenly cut. Eel tasted a bit fishy and the salmon was like all of the end bits. At least the sushi rolls has flavor; some definitely tasted better than others. Portion size was ok for the price and they were really quick in making our food. Customer service was good but the actual sushi itself did not satisfy my craving for sushi. Not sure I will be coming back anytime soon...

Yelp
Saw only 2 tables, they only allow one person at a time while ordering These are the best rolls I had, I like the thickness of them The don is pretty good, comes with miso soup They also gave us strawberry pocky

Yelp
What happened to this place? It was our go-to takeout spot for many years. However, the quality of food has substantially declined. All rolls are essentially made of a big chuck of white marinated fish slapped on a large amount off rice. This is so disappointing and we will not return.

Yelp
First time dining in since Covid and so sad. The prices nearly doubled. After tip I paid $30 for a nigiri and hand roll. I can't afford to go back. Especially when the sushi was mediocre. Bland and badly made. Too bad.

Yelp
**Review is from pre-covid (March 2020), just cleaning up my drafts and posting them** Wow, what a steal for good sushi! It's been a while since I've seen specialty rolls served at sub $10 prices. FYI bring cash if you can. They take credit card as well, but will charge an additional fee if you choose to pay with card. Another tip: get takeout if you don't want to wait. There were a lot of people ordering dinner to go. My friend and I came for dinner on a Tuesday night a little before 5:30, and we just missed the first seating and were the first to put our down name. Folks eat quickly and leave here, so we didn't have to wait too long before two bar seats opened up and we were seated. First thing you notice as you're walking in is that it's tiny inside. There are 4 counter seats, 2 four person tables, 3 two person tables, and that's it. If you do the math, that means a max of 18 people can be seated. Definitely don't come with a big group. Their menu was a bit confusing in that there was more than one menu you could order from. There's the menu at your seat, but there was also a menu taped to the wall with additional appetizers and sushi rolls. And then in front of us at the sushi bar, we saw a bunch of cutely drawn signs detailing out individual fish we could order sashimi or nigiri style. It was a little overwhelming. My friend and I shared the Avo Salmon roll ($7.50), and I also got the Dragon Tempura roll ($9.95) as well, which has eel and avocado but also shrimp tempura. My friend ordered their salmon and gyoza bento ($12.50). The rolls were made quite quickly and handed to us directly by the sushi chef. Everything was pretty solid; not the most amazing sushi rolls I've had (there was a little bit too much rice in them), but I really can't complain for the price. The Dragon tempura had a nice crunch with the shrimp, though I wish there was a little bit more avocado on it. We finished eating quickly and left so they could get started seating the next folks. We paid a little less than $40 for two rolls and a bento box, and that's including tip. Such good value! I understand why this place is so popular now.

Yelp
Their sushi is wonderful. Never been anything but overwhelmed with how fantastic the food has been. Do yourself a favor and get some. If there's a complaint it's that seating is very limited/minimal.

Yelp
I was craving sushi for the longest and decided to go to Geta. Dining is still not allowed here so we ordered takeout and food was ready in about 20 minutes. I ordered the lion king, lobster salad roll, dragon roll, toro, hamachi and uni. The portions and the prices were pretty decent. The quality, on the other hand, was just ok. The rice in the rolls were stale but they were flavorful. Even though I got three different rolls, they all tasted so similar to me. I was really looking forward to the nigiri options I got but they all turned out to be a huge disappoint. Upon taking off the plastic coverings, I could already tell the fish were old. The cuts were also not the best and the toro looked so stringy. After eating them, they were definitely not fresh. Especially the uni. I managed to eat one of them, but I had to spit out the second piece because it was just that bad :( not the quality I was expecting given all the positive reviews there are.

Yelp
This place is a bit overhyped. I always get sashimi in any sushi place I go to as it's my true marker of quality. I have to say, it is definitely not worth it here at Geta. Not only was the quality just average, but they are essentially scraps of leftover fish, and an absolutely horrendous cut to boot: huge chunks of fish, ONE slender piece of shrimp, TWO super thick cuts of tuna that were of different shapes/sizes -- you can't have one side be tapered off (imagine mashed) and the other side thick. Having access to quality fish is one thing, but the cut is all on the chef. Please don't serve customers your scraps, writing it off as a sashimi chef's special combo and charge us $26 for it. I find it incredibly disrespectful. Besides sashimi scraps, the actual sushi is not too bad, which I imagine is what the majority of patrons would typically get. I had the fortune of having the iwana nigiri (in season) which was pretty amazing and delicious. Nigiri is meant to be eaten in one bite, and the ratio was pretty spot on, but the size was a bit bigger than I prefer. My recommendation is to make it smaller, which would leave the customer salivating for more. You can also still get away with charging customers the same price and save on fish costs as there will be more to go around for others -- but that's just advice from a random guy on Yelp... I like the carpaccio. Great balance of citrus, sweet, and savory. The amaebi nigiri was pretty good too. It would have been even better if I had a chance to eat it immediately like it's supposed to because fried shrimp head needs to be eaten ASAP or else you'll be left with just mushed up batter. I can tell it would have been incredible since it is a quality sweet shrimp. I won't blame Geta for my decision in having takeout, however, what I would like to point out that is related is... ...that there won't be any signs for online orders. Even if you ordered over the phone, you'd be asked to wait in line, which bothers my compulsive disorder for organized efficiency. If the line is ~5+, I recommend you simultaneously wait in line and place an order over the phone, so by the time you have to pay, the food is ready. Don't be like me and and wait in line for 30 mins even though you see your food at the counter ready to be picked up (I'd have to pay and there's only one cashier -- this is different from already paid orders from a delivery service where you can skip the line).

Yelp
Ordered to go, its pricey. Japanese food is notoriously pricey by nature due to its skilled cuts/ tedious food prep and unparalleled freshness. Ordered the following items : Chirashi donburi bowl (mixed fish), crispy real California roll (real crab, avocado, tempura crispies outside), Dragon Roll, and a Chikuwa tempura roll (fishcake) and a pair of maguro nigiri. (tuna). The maguro nigiri tasted really fresh and at $4.5 each, the uni in the chirashi bowl was a bit fishy/(not as fresh), the dragon roll was pretty standard, but priced at $14 it was decent, imitation crab avocado, topped with eel. You can't really go wrong. The crispy real crabmeat california roll priced at $11.25 was a bit one dimensional, the Chikuwa Roll / fishcake was a bit overpriced at $12.95 . Overall, I felt like the rolls could have a bit more dimension/ different complex layers and profiles. I'd say its a pass for a 2nd time, i've had better value elsewhere; Its definitely worth a try. Don't take my word for it. Overall bill : $91

Yelp
Terrible service!! DO NOT GO HERE! If I could give 0 stars I would. I was mind blown by the disrespect from the manager/owner, as well as the other employees. I had to see for myself what others thought of this place and it looks like I'm not the only one that feels this way. From other reviews I've read, it seems to be a pattern of disrespect from the owner. DO NOT GIVE THEM YOUR SERVICE!!!

Yelp
A true bang for your buck. This won't be the best sushi place you've ever had, but the value you get for the price is unmatched. Would highly recommend stopping by if you're looking for something to satisfy your sushi craving that won't break the bank! They're doing takeout during COVID, but the line was quite long - highly recommend calling in your order to save time. Lion King - This was a standout amongst the rest of the rolls, warm and soft and delicious. Would highly recommend trying. Salmon Belly Nigiri - Sooo good! The fish is good and fresh. Hotate Nigiri - soft, delicious and buttery. Highly recommend the nigiris! 49ers roll - mehh. You can pass on this; there's much better rolls available. Salmon skin roll - this was just alright. Would pass on it next time as well!

Yelp
Geta offers take out but the real strength of this restaurant is the cozy seating area. A combination of hot green tea, spicy ginger, refreshing dishes like sake nigiri or wakame su, and knock out mains like the lion king creates a fulfilling meal. I recommend this place to anyone who wants to sit down and enjoy some nice sushi. Side note: there was a period of about 5 months from late 2019 to early 2020 where served had the best ramen I've had in the entire Bay Area so keep your eyes peeled in case they ever bring it back

Yelp
Good fresh sushi and great service. Lots of options and daily specials too. Space is tight, but it's super clean which is most important.
