Highlights

Geylang Lor 29 Hokkien Mee, a beloved hawker spot, serves nostalgic prawn noodles with a smoky charcoal twist, though some say it's lost its former glory.

Shell Out: Our Top Picks for Hokkien Prawn Noodles in Singapore

"To date, several Hokkien prawn mee stalls have sprouted up in Geylang claiming to be the original Geylang prawn noodles stall but foodies will know that the real Geylang Hokkien prawn mee hawker stall has relocated to East Roast Road. With 50 years of heavy wok duty under their belts, Geylang Lor 29 Hokkien Mee is an institution. Wok hei is an increasingly difficult attribute to find in hawker food for it requires wok-handlers to be frying the ingredients until it develops an almost crispy char on the exterior before it is deglazed with the stock - an action many hawkers are skipping due to time constraints. But the prawn noodles here wears its wok hei as a badge of honour. In fact, they take the wok hei a step further by frying the noodles in a hot wok that's fired by charcoal, a technique they've employed since the 1960s." - Alethea Tan

In general, online reviews have been unforgiving with this store and their franchises. Especially the Hokkien Mee Facebook group in Singapore. Nonetheless I had a foreign guest and Swee Guan was closed on a Wednesday. Since the senior hawker passed on the flavour had since been lost. I doubt this rude young son-in-law has any real passion for the traditional dish rather than simply leeching on a brand name for gains. No much wok hei, fairly mediocre offerings. You have to put a gun to my head to come back.

First, the place is quite clean for a typical coffeeshop setting, which was a pleasant surprise. As for the food, the Hokkien Mee does have that signature wok hei taste, which gives it a nice smoky aroma. However, the portion of chilli provided was really disappointing. The chilli is usually the highlight that complements the noodles, but the amount given was so little that it didn’t enhance the dish much. On the other hand, I absolutely do NOT recommend the oyster omelette. The oysters were not fresh at all, and the dish was completely bland. There was no seasoning or flavour to speak of, making it a huge letdown. Overall, I’d give this place a 5/10. It might be worth a visit if you’re specifically craving wok hei Hokkien Mee, but I wouldn’t go out of my way for it.

Not what i expected... different from the original. Alot of burnt parts.... taste like burnt charcoal (NOT WOK HEI). Can't get the charcoal taste out even after 2 drinks. There's a difference between wok hei and just eating burnt charcoal. Disappointing!

A pale shadow of past glory. Disappointed, sad, that’s how I’d describe what’s going on. Noodles are alkali, no wok hei, not properly fried, it’s like they dumped broth on barely fried noodles. There’s simply no pride, no love. I dare say some food court Hokkien mee can beat them now. This was unthinkable when uncle was still around. Farewell old friend. It was good while it lasted.

First time trying after long hiatus since before they shifted to new location. Lor 29 HKM. Used to be a bastion for how HKM is defined in Singapore. New chef (not the daughter also), it now tastes completely different from the past. Can taste the alkali from the yellow noodles, overall very salty, no wok hei, only lucky thing is bought the $6 version and not the $10 or $15 option.

Peng U ordered at 4pm on Tuesday. The place is not crowded. Hokkien Prawn mee does not have the wok-hey aroma, for my liking. Fried eggs and Oysters is manageable. Oysters are just too skinny and flat … Overall experience is 6/10.

My first encounter with delicious fried Hokkien Mee more than 10 years ago was Kim’s and this. Now Kim’s (or Prince of Hokkien Mee) occupies where Geylang Lorong 29 Charcoal Fried Hokkien Mee used to be at 396 East Coast Road and they moved to this location. The fried Hokkien mee still retains that distinct flavour of theirs but somehow lacks that wok hei compared to last time. The chilli is also less punchy. The prawn seems smaller and less crunchy. Overall it does not really wow me but it is still a decent plate of fried Hokkien mee.

90 % yellow noodles. Bean sprouts with Black cap. Nothing fantastic about it.$6 with a small portion. Not worth the money. Can get better stuff at other place.
