Ghaya Review: This Queens Bakery Serves Stellar Ham-And-Cheese Sandwiches | Eater NY

"At her self-titled bakery in Long Island City, I found a pastry-driven oasis where Ghaya Oliveira—a James Beard winner who rose to fame in the restaurants of Daniel Boulud—turns high-concept technique into utterly decadent handhelds. The ham-and-cheese sandwich is an edible, elegant monster truck: roughly eleven alternating layers of cured ham (a low-salt jambon de Paris, thickly cut and gently sweet) and emmentaler, stacked on a sliced, toasted croissant that’s brushed with brown butter, topped with an extra slice of crisp, frico-like emmentaler, and finished until everything is gloriously crisp; short strands of ham poke from the edges and are rendered slightly dry like ham jerky. The sandwich arrives with a small side salad, costs $13.25, and I rate it a BUY—rich and unadorned but balanced by the ham’s restraint, the cheese’s neutral ooze, and the croissant’s honeycombed interior, toasted crunch, and brown-butter aroma. Oliveira’s broader menu—bone broth, Tunisian pkaila, multi-colored macarons, a very good chocolate croissant, and a croissant slathered in homemade Nutella that’s very much a knife-and-fork pastry—underscores why her savory creation feels orchestrated with pastry precision and inspired by mille-feuille layering." - Ryan Sutton

The Best Dishes Eater Editors Ate This Week | Eater NY

"While checking out Jacx & Co., I tried Ghaya, a Tunisian-leaning cafe from pastry chef Ghaya Oliveira, and for lunch chose the poulet ($15.85): tender chicken lightly crusted in pistachios that lent a pleasant crunch to the skin, paired with shockingly velvety scoops of mashed sweet potato — a great savory decision and reason to return for the baked goods." - Eater Staff

Google
Their chicken sandwich is TOP tier! You’ll get to fall in love more and more of it without that guilt feeling from the buttery croissant. I just hope they would reimagine the interior and exterior spaces of the café to feel a bit cozy. Their coffee is great too. It has a very interesting punch.

June 2025: Updates! woke up craving Ghaya so i ordered via doordash (a french toast a cream cheese cruffin and a hazelnut croissant) ---- best brunch!!!!!!! the french toast arrived warm and perfect and same for the pastries, ghaya its just fenomenal. March 2025: I finally physically made it to ghaya!!!!!!! its so coozy and it delicious as always! i had the avocado toast w a poached egg (its the best) with a turmeric latte (perfect amount of sweetness) plus lots of pastries to go! check it out! you will never regret it. My favs are: Chocolate hazelnut, pistachio croissant and Pain au chocolate Ghaya was my go to in their old location - i was heart broken 💔 when they closed but the happiest 💖💖 when they reopened! I havent been there physically (I will soon) but i just ordered some goodies through doordash and everything tastes as good as i remembered!!! Hugeeee fan over here! ❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥 Ghaya! ( i was so excited that i didnt had time for pics)

Google
Ghaya has become one of my favorite cafes in all of NY. I live close by and Ghaya has become my go-to cafe/brunch place. The drinks are amazing and the pastries are some of the best that I’ve ever had. They also have brunch menu items and will even heat up the pastries for you! The owners are incredibly kind and thoughtful. I cannot recommend this cafe enough!

Google
What a find, I'm so glad I found Ghaya! This is a great cafe in Astoria with friendly staff and wonderful food. I really enjoyed the shakshuka; it was well-spiced with a flavorful tomato base and the eggs were cooked perfectly. The avocado smash is another great choice. The drinks were also delicious. The chai latte and the spiced golden latte are perfect for a hot summer day. This place delivers on all fronts: great food, unique drinks, and a friendly environment. Looking forward to dropping by again!

Google
This is the best place for brunch and dessert. I live nearby. Why didn’t I know about this place? More people should know this place!! The bread was amazing and staff were so kind every time. The restaurant is cozy and there are some tables for sitting inside and outside. I had a chicken croissant sandwich and it was absolutely amazing.

Google
Stopped by this cafe to get some caffeine since it was near a dog playground I was taking my pup to. It’s a small cafe and only has one table at the front, a bar stool area on the side and a table outside. Grabbed a small iced coffee and a warm croissant. Staff were very friendly and let my pup come inside while I was ordering even when they had a sign that said no pets (only service animals). Enjoyed my iced coffee and the croissant (which my pup also agreed on). Lots of pastry options and breakfast/sandwich options as well.

Amazing food, the avocado toast is phenomenal- matcha latte was so refreshing and delicious, a must try in the neighborhood!

Came here in 2020 when they used to be in JACX at LIC, best cafe ever. So happy they reopened!!! Their food is incredibly fresh and flavorful

Yelp
They used to be open on Jackson ave and when they closed I regretted not going there despite wanting to for so long. They opened a new location a little into Astoria and I finally got to visit them. I have heard so many great things about them and I was so excited. I thought I may have had an unfair expectation just because of all the good things people have told me about this places. And yet. They. Met. NAY. Exceeded. My. Expectation. I had maple bacon croissant, pear danish, and pistachio almond croissant. Flake flake flake butter butter butter. Did I drink those pastries? Probably. They tasted buttery yet airy, flaky yet moist. Those were exactly what I love and look for in those pastries!!! Thank you for making my dream cake pastries into existence. They were more than worth the calories. They were negative calories because the joy and serotonin it brought burned calories for me. I will definitely go back again to try other stuff!!!!!

Yelp
Tunisian cafe owned and operated by a couple. Distinct from the Jackson Ave Ghaya at JACX & CO. Service was lovely and efficient. Savory pastries were a bit stale but the egg puff bread was unique.

Yelp
I got one of the best breakfast I had for a very long time! Food is truly delicious and services is great. Definitely a spot to check out. I will be back!

Yelp
Great coffee spot in LIC. I had the chicken sandwich with an iced coffee. Iced coffee was a little weak for me so I'd skip it next time. Can't wait to come back for the pastries and try the Matcha Latte.

Yelp
Ghaya was my favorite LIC coffee shop and the pastries were the best I'd ever had. I am so sad they left Jax&Co but looking forward to visiting them at their new location once they announce it and reopen! Not specifically a pastry but their gluten free chocolate chip cookie was my favorite and I thought it tasted better than the regular (non gluten free) chocolate chip sea salt cookie. The service was always friendly and the storefront was always kept immaculately clean. It was super convenient that there was always a lot of seating in Jax&Co since most coffee shops have limited seating. Can't wait for them to reopen!

Yelp
This place has such cool pastries! I ordered the pistachio croissant and the hazelnut croissant. They load it up with the nuts! Im a huge fan of chocolate so, naturally, the hazelnut was my favorite but they're both great. I only wish that the croissant were more flaky and crisp. Super friendly and sweet service! I will be back to try more items from here!

Yelp
I love Ghaya's friendly service and unique menu options. The vitamin c fruits dish is so refreshing, and their hot groat oats is comforting and delicious!

Yelp
Pricey, but good quality and delicious pastries. Love taking these home and popping them in the oven for a quick toast. Friendly service.

Yelp
Moved to LIC shortly after my previous review and Ghaya has since become a go-to in the area for my boyfriend and I. I especially love their French toast! Recently, I've tried: + Jambon de Paris - excellent + Iced coffee - good but I wish it was a little stronger + Flourless chocolate cookie - excellent + Grilled chicken breast salad (special) - perfect + Iced raspberry lemonade (special) - could have been more lemonade-y but it was still refreshing + Pistachio cookie - excellent + Challah French toast - incredible, maybe the best thing I've had here + Madeleine - decent + peach tart - perfect, my favorite pastry so far!! Will be back for more croissants and cookies!
google avatar

Yelp
Great drip coffee and pistachio croissant is so good, the filling was not too sweet. Pricey but worth the try!

Yelp
Located in Jax and co food court, I've passed by this place numerous times, always admiring the baked goods from afar. The other day I was walking by and i noticed something different, chocolate hazelnut croissants, I had to go in! Best decision ever! The croissant was delicious! The chocolate inside was smooth and not overwhelming. The actual croissant was light, and flaky. The hazelnut gave it a nice crunch factor. They also had pistachio croissant which I will get next time! Afterwards I decided to do a little research and gothamist wrote a piece about this place : 'The Ghaya is Ghaya Oliveira, who won a James Beard award for her pastries at Daniel, and here offers a full menu of sweet and savory dishes, often harking back to her native Tunisia. ' If your in the area, check this little bakery out. I didn't take any pictures, because I was too busy devouring the croissant.

Yelp
Ghaya is a welcome new addition to the neighborhood. My wife and I picked up delicious and ornate pastries on Valentine's Day. They were buttery, crumbly, and not overly sweet. We came to the Jacx and Co food court with friends on another day. We went immediately to Ghaya. My wife ordered the Poulet and I had a smoky eggplant dish. Both were delicious and very reasonably priced, given the quality (and quantity!) of the food. But our dishes sort of seemed out of place. Our food took around 10 mins longer than everyone else's. Objectively, our dishes were better. But the wait time was correspondingly longer. And, to be fair, our food was also more expensive. I felt like Ghaya wants to be two things at once: (1) a yummy pastry and coffee shop; (2) a sit-down Mediterranean restaurant. The food is good enough to pull off either. But in the future, I'd treat Ghaya as more of a pastry/coffee shop than a quick food court lunch. I think that jives better with the overall Jacx and Co vibe.

Yelp
Cute spot in the middle of Queens! Just stopped by for a quick coffee and hazelnut croissant. It was so good! I will def come back!

Yelp
I moved out of the neighborhood and visited today out of nostalgia. 1.5 years ago, this was my favorite croissant in NYC but the standards have dropped. I'm very disappointed! The pistachio croissant was way smaller and looked smooshed. The dough texture was wet and soggy. It lacked the satisfying flakey crunch. The price of the croissant also increased to $6. I would be happy to pay for the adjusted inflation if the standard was still kept high. Very sad!
google avatar

Nathaniel P.

Yelp
TLDR: great mocha. Came in for a quick coffee, ordered an iced mocha and was in and out in less than five minutes. The mocha was rich and dark, not overly sweet. I'll come here every time I'm around for the wework upstairs!

Yelp
I really love this place. This is one of my go-to places for lunch. I appreciate that the food is freshly prepared and made to order. The staff always puts so much care and attention to detail towards the food. The presentation is beautiful even in the takeout containers. Although I usually ruin the presentation walking back to my apartment with my shaky hands. I've tried almost everything on their menu. My favorite is the Garden Roots and More. I usually get this because it's healthy and the root vegetables taste delicious, especially the delicata squash. The vegetables change but I've had delicata squash, brussel sprouts, potatoes, yucca, parsnips, carrots, and golden beets. I appreciate that they cook their farro until it's softer because my jaw usually gets tired from eating farro. I also like their Pkaila which consists of stewed spinach, fried chickpeas, and ricotta on pide bread. It's something I've never had before and I really like the texture of all of the components together. Their groat oats is a super filling oatmeal with cashew butter and date syrup. I was full for the entire day after eating a bowl of this. In terms of the meat options I prefer the Poulet over the Boulette since the chicken is more juicy. I haven't gotten too many of their sweets, but I love their raspberry macarons and apple tarts. On the weekend they have challah French toast and during holidays, they have beautiful special desserts.

Yelp
Fantastic patisserie inside Jax&Co! My husband turned me on to this spot after bringing me a box of their macarons. Fantastic French pastries and croissants! Highly recommended!
google avatar

Sarah K.

Yelp
Came by after a doctor's appointment next door. Wish I had more appointments because my frittata and cappuccino were perfect. Both employees who helped me were lovely. And it's part of the Jax & Co hall so there was tons of seating for my mid-week solo brunch :) Definitely stop by and try them if you're in the Queens Plaza area!
google avatar

Cindy C.

Yelp
This is a little cafe that's part of Jacx & Co, conveniently located by the train station. Unfortunately the seating areas inside Jacx & Co are closed due to COVID currently but hopefully that will change soon. They don't have outdoor seating area. I love their lattes (and decaf latte!) and madeleines. They have pistachio, chocolate, plain croissants which are pretty good. I've tried one of their pistachio pastry and it was a bit blend.
google avatar

Carol L.

Yelp
I really loved the Ham & Cheese croissant here. The Hazelnut and Pistachio croissants were pretty good too, but not nearly as delicious as the Ham & Cheese one. The Chocolate Hazelnut Croissant wasn't super evenly distributed inside.

E C.

Yelp
The food here is fantastic. We go for breakfast all the time. Hands down the best avocado toast I've ever had. Other highlights include their Jambon de Paris sandwich, the granola and the mini tarts. The staff is always kind and just so good at what they do. Coffee is pretty good too. 10/10 Recommend.
google avatar

Pheabe C.

Yelp
They had a weekend special of a tartine with smoked salmon, dill cream cheese, radishes, mixed greens etc. and I asked for it with a croissant instead of the usual bread. I also asked for a poach egg. The croissant was fantastic as were the rest of the ingredients. The chef assembled my sandwich with great care and appreciated her attention to detail. I should've take a photo but ate it too quickly! I would definitely come back for this croissant sandwich. My friend ordered the yuzu tart and the pistachio croissant. Both were good but the croissant was the standout.

Yelp
I don't know how I haven't reviewed this place yet! Love it. Every baked good, sandwich and breakfast offering that I've had is great. It is also a great place to meet someone who a coffee as the adjacent space has ample seating. I also appreciate that they have drinks that are outside the typical cafe selection.
google avatar

Cami G.

Yelp
Ghaya is one of the best restaurants/cafes in LIC! Everything in there is delicious. In particular, I recommend the croissants, muffins, and avocado toast. You can't go wrong. You can see the attention to detail in the stunning display of baked goods and you can taste the high quality.

Evelynn W.

Yelp
My friend and I moved to LIC and have been coming here for over a year and love the iced coffee. The owner and workers have always been pleasant which really threw me off after my experience today. I had ordered 2 iced drinks and got 1 iced and 1 hot drink by mistake. Mistakes happen and the employee who took the order had even apologized which was completely fine. When I had asked if they can just exchange the hot drink for an iced one like I had originally ordered, the owner told me I can't have a free drink. I thought he misunderstood so I explained I ordered 2 iced drinks originally (I tried giving back the hot drink). He told me if I wanted him to remake it then I have to pay for it. That is ridiculous given that the boy who took the order even acknowledged the mistake. I normally would be okay with it either way, but because of the owner's attitude and asking me to pay again for a mistake they made, we will no longer be supporting this business. It is not worth it to come back knowing customers are treated this way.

Raq D.

Yelp
The chef can have all my money! EVERYTHING I've eaten there has been super delicious. I just tried the frittata and it led me to write a review. THEEEEE best frittata I've ever had in my life! I've tried a few things off the menu and I cant choose my favorite. The chicken sandwich blew my mind! Perfectly cooked and everything is so fresh! If you are ever in the LIC area you should def visit. PS. all the reviews talking about it being pricey, it is allll worth every penny! Its that good you don't even think about price. Kudos to the chef!

Emma J.

Yelp
I hardly ever feel inclined to review restaurants - but this was just such an amazing experience so I had to. My boyfriend and I have been to Ghaya for a mix of coffees / treats / dinner / breakfast, and never left feeling anything other than wowed. Though it looks more like a coffee shop experience, their food is seriously some of the best in the city. I'd even rank it the best restaurant I've tried in LIC! What's craziest to me is how much effort and attention the owner, Ghaya, puts into every single meal. Sometimes the food can take a bit longer to make, but you'll forget about it as soon it hits your tastebuds. Today I got a $12.50 grilled chicken salad (a special for the day) but I swear it was the best chicken I've ever tasted, in my life, hot off the grill and ready made just for me. $12.50! My sweetgreen salads cost more than that! NYC is literally never this affordable at this quality bracket. One of my good friends even comes from Chelsea every weekend just to get a yogurt granola bowl from here. Seriously heavenly. And don't get me started on the deserts.... Would highly highly recommend to anyone who wants a great meal, at literally any time of the day, with the friendliest service possible.
google avatar

Yesenia M.

Yelp
I know I have found a winning coffee place when I could have the coffee without any sweeteners or added flavors and Ghaya delivers! My go-to drink there is the hot almond milk cappuccino but I have had other of their drinks including their iced coffees and bouza which is a hazelnut base drink. I'm always amazed when cafes are able to froth up almond milk and they do a great job of obtaining that consistency that is not overly watery like often is the case with plant-based milk. In addition to their coffee, they also offer a wide variety of pastries and savory foods as well. I have not had the pleasure of trying their savory foods typically because I go during that 2 pm hour for a coffee pick me up and a light snack so I haven't ventured too much outside of the light pastry offerings. My favorite of their baked goods is hands down the pistachio cookie. I was a big fan of the chocolate chip cookie initially, but I think they changed your formula and though it is still great, it does not compete with the pistachio cookie if you are a fan of pistachio. They also offer a great variety of small tarts which I've sampled quite a few of in addition to their caramel muffin. From chocolatey to fruity from light to decadent, they've got the gametes of baked goods covered in flavor profiles to suit everyone's needs. They are connected to jacx and co which offers great seating options so you can enjoy your purchase in a pretty cool dining hall with work friendly areas.

Yelp
Best croissant ever! Every time I buy it, I cannot stop eating... you will be shocked! The thin apple pies are delicious! Their broth tasted special and chicken sandwich was amazing! I love their tarts...! Only one issue is the sweets come after 3pm which I often miss to get it. Seriously, it's a must go cafe.

G P.

Yelp
Love love Ghaya! So sad to see it go. Highly recommend their whipped yogurt bowl and pastries!! Cannot go wrong
google avatar

Yelp
The best Avocado toast I've had in sometime I wish I had a photo but I ate it too quickly. My only regret is not getting the chocolate chip cookie for later. The salt amount is perfectly balanced with the chocolate chunks. Can't wait to try something new next time.
google avatar

SM V.

Yelp
I went this past Saturday morning and I'm not sure if it just wasn't a day for croissants but I tried the ham and cheese and the chocolate/hazelnut...no. Let me give kudos first to the fantastic customer service. Super friendly server who helped fill up my dog bowl and opened the very heavy door for me to avoid food/tray spillage. Also, glad to see they have ample, albeit tight, outdoor seating. The ham and cheese, while pretty good, was not worth $13.25! It's super rich, so I should've just split one with my husband. The chocolate/hazelnut croissant was so dry and heavily filled with the cream that I just couldn't finish it. I probably should have tried a plain ol' croissant or one of the other desserts. The teas and various drink blends were the most interesting part of the menu to be honest. I'm happy to go back and try those + other pastries but pass on the croissants.

Joe M.

Yelp
Was blown away by this wonderful spot. Desserts were so creative and absolutely delicious.

Sherry Z.

Yelp
Try the avocado toast and oat groat (while hot). Best comfort food choice for Sundays.

Yelp
So happy this opened up in LIC. The pastries both sweet and savory have been outstandingly delicious. The menu is quite diverse so it's fun to try lots of different things. Also, the staff are incredibly nice. I've had the macaroons, cakes, croissants, coffee, and sandwiches which have all been so good.

Apple B.

Yelp
I ordered Bouza, Cortado, Pistachio Croissant and the Hazelnut croissant. I liked all of them but I didn't finish the Hazelnut, mainly because it was too sweet for my taste buds but I can see how sweet tooth individual will love it!
google avatar

Liz L.

Yelp
One of the best cafes in queensboro. They have a rotating set of teas depending on the season. I also like how they have different milk and sugar options for lattes. It's connected to the Jacx and co food court so you can order via QR code at a table and someone will deliver the drinks to you. You do need to show proof of vaccination in order to dine in at the Jacx and Co food court. Alternatively, there is an outdoor seating spot available exclusively for Ghaya. It's right next to a busy street but the sidewalk area is nice and clean. Great place to get your daily dose of caffeine!
google avatar

Alexandra S.

Yelp
Super cute bakery and friendly staff. Very high price point, but ingredients are fresh and seasonal. The apple danish just melts in your mouth!

Yelp
Amazing quality croissants - pistachio and chocolate hazelnut are musts - no skimping on ingredients here. Love the new addition to the neighborhood, I have only stopped by for breakfast so far, can't wait to try their lunch and dessert, everything always smells amazing here.
google avatar

Anjanie S.

Yelp
Love the lady in front, love the croissaints, love their dinner, love the desserts and love their drinks. Did I say that I love this place? Yeah just go, grab a yummy drink, grab something yum to eat and enjoy the day ahead.

Hamilton C.

Yelp
I've come here 3 times, as I have always been a fan of a good croissant. Unfortunately this place has failed me all 3 times. There's nothing technically wrong with the croissant, good layers, excellent honeycomb structure, crisp shell, excellent use of butter. My problem is every time I have come here, I have been sold a BURNT croissant. Like not even dark brown, black on 20% of it. I have also gotten the Jambon de Paris, also BURNT. Flavor of the dough would be excellent if it wasn't dominated by burnt bitter acrid flavor of the burnt top and bottom. There is a minimum standard every baker worth their salt should aspire to when making a croissant, not making a burnt croissant is so elementary its not even part of that standard. Furthermore, at this stage of your career, you should be familiar with your oven's hot spots and know to rotate out your croissants to avoid burning. LASTLY, as a business owner who takes pride in their product, you SHOULD NOT HAVE EVEN SOLD YOUR CUSTOMER a sub par product.

Missy A.

Yelp
BRILLIANT COFFEE SPOT! The chai latte was fantastic and their "Megg" (croissant/muffin cross with an egg), was delicious. I'll be back. Lovely atmosphere to sit and read a book.

Melissa T.

Yelp
Legitimately the best croissants in NYC. The pistachio almond croissant is just so good you HAVE to try it
google avatar

Abbey E.

Yelp
I ordered a larger drip coffee (black no sugar) and it wasn't what I expected. I prefer a much stronger, less watered-down cup of joe. Overall, the coffee was a let-down but the baristas were very nice. I may go back for a pastry...but not coffee.

Anna S.

Yelp
This cafe was walking distance from my Airbnb and decided to try. Glad I did coffee was very good! I just got the house coffee black. Also got 2 croissants, 1 pistachio and the other chocolate hazelnut and both were amazing. Would definitely recommend and I would come back!

saru k.

Yelp
The prices are much higher than I am usually comfortable paying, even for the high quality teas and coffees they serve, but I ate the most amazing plum pastry I will probably ever have in my life here, followed the next morning by a caramel topped coconut blueberry muffin that was inexplicably able to be fluffy, dense, and crispy crumbly all at once. It's worth the splurge!

Jon K.

Yelp
I pass by this place all the time and just assumed it was another over-priced coffee shop. I was wrong. Had a pistachio croissant and it was the best I ever had. Nice and warm and perfectly flakey, and the inside has a pistachio filling. This is a legit place.

R J.

Yelp
This place is a gem in LIC, everything is amazing here! . This is my go-to spot for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Rest of the spots in the food court are okay, they are a hit or a miss. This place is always consistent with their food. The pastries are all great, the owner who is also a pastry connoisseur, makes everything by herself.
