Ghirardelli Chocolate To Go at Ghirardelli Square is a convenient stop if you’re craving something sweet but don’t want to wait in the main shop. We grabbed some chocolate bars and a milkshake—quick service and same amazing quality. Tip: It’s perfect for picking up gifts or enjoying a treat on the move. Prices are still premium, but you’re paying for Ghirardelli quality and the San Francisco experience. Great option when you’re short on time but still want a taste of something iconic!

For a first-time tourist, the Ghirardelli Chocolate Experience at Fisherman’s Wharf is a fun and indulgent stop. The shop offers a variety of chocolates, sundaes, shakes, and baked goods, making it a great place to enjoy a classic San Francisco treat. It's crowded especially during peak hours, and prices that are a bit higher than regular retail stores. While there’s no factory here, the shop still provides a taste of Ghirardelli’s rich history and signature flavors. For a more relaxed experience, Ghirardelli Square nearby offers seating and additional shopping options 🍫

Google
The best chocolate of San Francisco! Impossible to visit the Ghirardelli Square without trying any of the different chocolates they offer. There are many different flavors and also limited editions. Also, the views from here are incredible. It is a must stop if you are in San Fran.

Went in expecting rare, exclusive chocolates—left with the same stuff I could grab at Target. The hot chocolate? Life-changing. Rich, creamy, possibly worth committing minor crimes for. My wife’s latte and father-in-law’s Americano? Let’s just say they met an untimely demise in the trash, where they belonged. If you go, stick to the chocolate and avoid the coffee like it’s cursed. Pro tip: go at night—unless you enjoy waiting in line contemplating your life choices.

I went there on Sunday. It was very busy with a long line, but it moved fast. The frozen hot chocolate and sundae were good. The San Francisco Maritime is just across the street. You can walk around and see the views of the pier after getting some dessert.

Really interesting choice of ice cream, sundaes, shakes, and other dessert I tried nob hill chill with cookies and cream ice cream. It was AMAZING!! Customer service is exceptional. Really helpful! They explained really well and provided good recommendations. Their hot fudge is in house made one. And also fresh. I could really feel the richness and creaminess of the drink. Highly recommended!!

Google
Ghirardelli Chocolate is a super fun place for chocolate lovers! You get to choose your favorite chocolates from a bunch of options, and they even have a special area just for ice cream and shakes. The chocolate machine inside is really cool, and the cafeteria looks like San Francisco's famous cable cars, which is neat. With so many choices and a cool vibe, Ghirardelli is a must-visit for anyone who loves sweets. It's like a sweet adventure with lots of yummy treats!

Google
I guess this is their old factory for the Ghiradelli and where the chocolate company was founded. Service was sloppy but the ice cream we have is great tasting although overly priced! Has a gift shop on the first floor. See images for further information

Yelp
One of our go to spots for hot cocoa in sf I'd say this is one of those things that we just always go to because of the name and because Ghirardelli Square is just a nice tourist attraction to visit if you're in the area If you love chocolate and are a fan of Ghirardelli you definitely have to come the Ghirardelli Square just because there's so much to check out Drinks are solid, people are nice, I know I'll be back

Yelp
I really appreciated the staff and how willing they were to make accommodations. Ambiance: (5/5) Come here instead of waiting in the long lines, the menu is the same. Price: (3/5) Seemed a bit overpriced but you did get a big portion. Food: (4/5) We asked for the least decadent ice cream they had and Treasure Island was it. There are layers of ice cream, hot fudge, and a brownie on top. We split this in two cups and multiple people ate it. Hot chocolate was amazing. I wish I got a bigger size. Service: (5/5) Amazing people work there. They made the experience great, In conclusion, I will be coming back when I am in the area.

Yelp
Convenient location near the Wharf. On the go is a smaller shop, selling some chocolate as well. Of course, it's a little pricey here. My dad got a scoop of the vanilla coconut non-dairy (there was an upcharge for that) and a scoop of the chocolate with mini chocolate chips for myself (for a total of $18). The line went by fast and there was an area for outdoor seating 2023 #9

Yelp
4/10/23 Monday 7pm the waffle cone was undercooked and not crispy. It was the last one they had.

Yelp
Who has a love of CHOCOLATE!? This is the place to visit. Ghirardelli Square has about 3-4 location where you can satisfy all of your chocolate craving. The smell of chocolate is in the air. I decided to order the Treasure Island Brownie Sundae. OMG , every bite consist of a hint of chocolate, vanilla ice cream and a warm brownie. The cashier was very helpful in explaining the ingredients. The sundaes were ready within 10 minutes. What an AWESOME staff! I decided to take my sundae to the heart of the square. The view was spectacular. This is a perfect place to end a day. I

Yelp
Ghirardelli has the best chocolate sundaes in the Bay Area. They have some seasonal flavors like raspberry and they now have a make your own ice cream milkshake. So now you can create a chocolate strawberry milkshake. The service here is quick with outdoor seating available. Their Bay Area favorite chocolate compliments their great vanilla ice cream so well that on a hot day, there's no other place I'd rather be.

Yelp
The ice cream & hot fudge sundaes are everything you would expect in a yummy sundae! Staff was kind and service was quick. I like that there is an area downstairs because the upstairs location that is a little up the hill can get packed and have a wait. I got a hot fudge sundae and added bananas; didn't want a banana split cause I thought I only wanted a few bites, I was sharing, I should have ordered the full banana split- sundae was delicious.

Yelp
Wandering the sf streets at sun down. Wonderful breeze beautiful views i couldn't think of a better way to end my evening. Arriving 5 mins before closing can be super frustrating to employees. Especially while they have a line out the door and people continue to make special request. They were happy to allow us in line even if they knew they would be closed far behind regular hours because of how many people were still in line to be helped. The staff was super friendly and made sure to take care of everyone with all their concerns. If one didn't know an answer to a customers question they were sure to get it from someone that did know. Now the ice cream. Sorry but just not for me. I ordered a chocolate and caramel Sunday. I believe it was 2 bleh scoops of ice cream with tons of caramel and globs of chocolate. My husband raved about this place and i feel bad I'm not as satisfied as he.

Kennedy M.

Yelp
The person at the counter was not very helpful. I paid $6 to add a cookie to my ice cream and it wasn't even warm. So hard it could have chipped a tooth.

Yelp
I have been looking forward to coming here and it was a delight! The service was friendly and fast, and omg the ocean beach sundae hit the spot! Would totally be back

Yelp
Only Ghirardelli store we could find open in Ghirardelli Square, and happens to be overlooking the SF Maritime Park and Cove. Couldn't really shop for anything, though I don't know if that's normal. There was a policy of only two people allowed in at a time and there was a line for people ordering sundaes, so everyone was basically coming and almost immediately going back out. Then the orders would be delivered to the shielded table outside for pickup. Besides sundaes, you can also get just straight-up ice cream, shakes, floats, COFFEE, hot cocoa, and sweets like cookies and brownies and something called a nacho sundae. (Don't know why that last one stood out to me. No tables anymore, but a lot of people lingered around or sat in front of the Ghirardelli sign anyways. Gold Rush was really salt was what was mutually agreed upon. Like, REALLY salty. The Presidio Passion Sundae did not come with a chocolate strawberry (or at least mine didn't), and the strawberry parts/layers were more like jam. I don't usually like hot chocolate fudge on ice cream as it's a bit too much sugar and too sweet even for me, but Ghirardelli fudge is REALLY good. It's rich and satisfying and has this satisfying, thicker texture after having cooled a bit from the ice cream. Overall, it was a lovely way to spend the late weekend afternoon. One of the only places I would come back to for a fudge sundae.

Yelp
Haven't been here for a minute. Came in and one of the worker greeted us. We ask if we can order and she went to ask if they was still able to make us ice cream. They said we can order but it had to be to go. They was people eating in there and they didn't like us eat in there after we got our ice cream. They need to update their hours of operation, because when I check online before going to said they close at 12 AM. We was lucky we came here before they close which was 11 PM. Their ice cream here are delicious.
google avatar

Glenn L.

Yelp
We stopped by The Buena Vista and then took a walk over to the Ghiradelli Square. Seems like there are at least 4 places to grab some chocolate/sundae/milkshake in the square. We chose the smallest one down on the street and enjoyed our banana split on the steps outside. Chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry ice cream with three toppings, whipped cream, bananas, and a cherry. Good thing it was a four way split of the banana split or we would have been in trouble!

Yelp
Great sundaes. Awesome customer service. Great views of the bay. When in Frisco a must try

Yelp
We were about to walk up the giant flight of stairs into Ghirardelli Square to get ice cream at the soda fountain up there when we happened to notice this little version at the bottom of the steps. Lo and behold, they have all the delicious ice cream and they're perfect for lazy people who don't want to climb a bunch of stairs to get to the original soda fountain. It's small, yes, and has a smaller selection of chocolate, but the ice cream tastes the same. They have a couple of chairs out front in a small grassy area that you can sit down at if you're lucky enough to find an empty one) and eat your delicious ice cream. Ghirardelli does great ice cream and this was a handy quick stop for us on our trip.

Yelp
When in the area, especially while doing some sight-seeing and exploring with the family. We make sure to make a stop here for a pick me up treat. During the pandemic they are making sure we are keeping safe. They have a set-up for a line outdoors for ordering, keeping at a safe distance and pick-up table with plexiglass and hand sanitizers on hand. We love their drinks, sundaes, sweet treats. Definitely satisfies our sweet cravings. I like to try any new or seasonal items they may have on their menu. The steamers are great option for this cold fall/winter weather, but my kids prefer the ice cream sundaes in any weather. Always will be back for more!

Yelp
A San Francisco Original More than two hundred years ago, 203 to be precise, in Rapallo Italy a baby boy was born. At that time no one imagined that his name would be etched one of the more famous landmarks of a prominent city half the way around the world! That boy, Domingo Ghirardelli, would grew up and eventually move to San Francisco to establish a successful Chocolate Company. Ghirardelli Chocolate Company has changed hands over the years, but it still thrives. Ghirardelli-On-The-Go at Ghirardelli Square in San Francisco's Fisherman's Wharf offers the visitors all varieties of their chocolates and are delicious goods. One can grab a cup of hot chocolate on cool breezy afternoon and walk across the street and enjoy the view in Aquatic Park.
google avatar

Travis T.

Yelp
You can't travel to San Francisco and not visit this famous tourist spot. You can smell the chocolate from a distance as you approach. Ghirardelli has been making chocolate at this location since the 1850s. The shops and restaurants that you see today were created in the 60's. If you are in a hurry and just want a quick chocolate fix, this grab-and-go location is a good choice. It is conveniently situated in front of Ghirardelli Square next to Fisherman's Wharf. They make and sell many of the popular items that are at the original ice cream shop here. They also have many of the packaged chocolates and gift items in the store. Outside of Ghirardelli On-The-Go are a few tables if you need to sit or you can sit on the bench in front of the Ghirardelli sign. I treated myself recently to a Sea Salt Caramel Sundae - one of my favorites! It's a little pricey, but so good!

Yelp
We spent about $50 on ice cream and shakes on Saturday. My son got a scoop of Mint 'n Chip ice cream. While eating it he suddenly said "there's something in my ice cream!" We figured it was probably just a big piece of chocolate but he insisted on spitting it out. It looked disgusting so I used a fork to poke at it. At first I thought it was a blueberry but upon further inspection it looked like a prune. I didn't see anything containing prunes on the limited menu so it was especially disturbing finding it in the ice cream. Mind you, this was a simple scoop of ice cream, not a sundae or any other creation. This is very concerning for anyone with food allergies. What else are they cross contaminating your food with? Getting a treat at Ghirardelli every time we visit SF is now off our list of things to do there. We won't be returning.

Alexandra T.

Yelp
I don't often put up a bad review but this one deserves one. Chocolate is as expected for Ghirardelli. However, don't expect any family friendly gesture, not even a cup of hot water to warm up a baby bottle from the supervisor when spending over $50 in ice cream
google avatar

Elizabeth R.

Yelp
Ice cream is definitely more expensive than other places. Ordered a hot fudge sundae and they added so much fudge it hardened quickly and was not enjoyable to eat. Also got a butter pecan ice cream scoop and it had a weird powder texture to it. Second time trying this place won't be stopping by again. I'll hit up a Dreyers ice cream spot instead.
google avatar

Jay S.

Yelp
It is over price ice cream scoop, ice cream was good but I like my salted and straw ice cream in waffle cone for the same price better.
google avatar

Rhondi S.

Yelp
Thursday afternoon to do some shopping at the Ghirardelli square shop. Bought $36 chocolate squares, chocolate bars $6 each, but hey it's SF in the most touristy spot. No lines (it must be Covid or Thursday afternoon). Ice cream shop has the typical hot fudge sundaes, and other $15-17 sundae novelties, $5-7 hot chocolate and other shakes. Like the hot chocolate, but for $6, they should use real whipped cream, not the cheap fake stuff.

Davey B.

Yelp
Turn the hot chocolate temperature down. I burned my mouth to the point I had blisters on my lips from the first drink. My kids enjoyed their world famous Sundays.
google avatar

Alexandra P.

Yelp
We didn't expect any less than a five here, and it met our expectations. We ordered a triple ice cream cone and two hot cocoas with whipped cream to go. The ice cream was silky and flavorful, while served in the waffle cone that stayed crunchy and stable-- and the hot cocoas were probably the best we have had to date. The chocolate quality was definitely much higher, which made this midday sweet treat memorable into the evening.
google avatar

Justine S.

Yelp
Feel like I can't go to San Francisco without stopping to get something. I was craving a chocolate chip cookie, so I got one. It was alright, but not amazing. Too much chocolate or something. Glad we went on a Tuesday afternoon and there was no line and no wait.
google avatar

Christina G.

Yelp
I enjoyed a waffle bowl of raspberry sorbet with chopped almonds. Oh my goodness.....delicious! My wife got a sundae which was equally fabulous. Definitely worth a visit.
google avatar

Sankit G.

Yelp
Though I like desserts sometimes I try to not order anything at this spot just because of the sheer amount of quantity and sugar contents. I always suggest people to order one portion between 5-6 people unless you really have a sweet tooth. My friend still went ahead and got 2 dishes among 7 of us and surely enough we wasted like half the bowl. One was fudge based and another was caramel based sundae. It tasted excellent but yea hopefully if they had smaller portions priced accordingly would be more appealing to me.
google avatar

Jesika H.

Yelp
Came in today after our go car tour Of course there was a line out the door because naturally everyone wants ice cream but this location is SUPER TINY. However, it's ran very efficiently and your wait time isn't long at all. It slightly bigger once you get inside. You order them wait for your name to be called and pick up your item. We got just a chocolate dipped cone, a cookie and one scoop of ice cream in another chocolate dipped cone. The cone chocolate was SOOOO Rich. I mean. YIKKKKES. But delicious none the less. Had no issues with ice cream, wait time or service.
google avatar

Tiffany Y.

Yelp
Must go to for tourist or if you never had there ice cream sunday! Must do visit and eat while here. Service was great and friendly
google avatar

JD O.

Yelp
So, they did direct message me, but offered nothing in return for my disappointment. They read the message, just decided not to answer me back...All good. My rating stays as it was....
google avatar

Jennifer V.

Yelp
I didn't realize I ordered at the on-the-go location but apparently I did! My friend and I split the midnight reverie because we love dark chocolate. The ice cream was delicious and the hot fudge really complemented the ice cream. I really enjoyed this dessert. Only thing is that it's super expensive ($13).
google avatar

Lidia T.

Yelp
The Ghirardelli Square itself is a great location to check out when visiting SF. All ice cream spots were open when we visited, and this one had the shortest line. Service is not the fastest, but the treat itself was worth it to us. We shared a Muir Woods and highly enjoyed the ice cream. They were quite generous with the hot fudge as well, which is awesome.
google avatar

Gina W.

Yelp
Strolling through Ghirardelli Square, shielding myself from the frigid air, realized I had forgotten to eat and craved a bowl of something sweet. Alas, a little ice cream shop! With Golden Gate views, had to stop! Got a scoop of cookie dough covered in caramel in a cup to go. The ice cream really hit the spot, but tasted pretty average, I thought. I know it's hyped, I don't get why, there's better ice cream quite nearby.
google avatar

Maggie E.

Yelp
Ghirardelli is a staple in SF! We like to visit, even though we have one in Disneyland or at the El Capitan in LA that we can go to with a much lighter wait. You go for the wait! You go for the chocolate! You take a picture of the big sign outside! The chocolate and ice cream are, of course, delicious, but I wish that the hot fudge in the Ocean Beach sundae hadn't hardened quite so fast, but I guess that's what you get when you mix the hot and cold? I have had sundaes at other places where the fudge stays soft and warm, though, so I'm not sure how that works. Anyway, I wish I had known about the dollar off if you check in on yelp! Or that if you take the cable car to get here, there is a coupon on the back of those!
google avatar

Jamie D.

Yelp
We used the on the go shop and didn't wait at all. The chocolate ice cream is amazing. I personally love the dark chocolate topping. My daughter got a Sunday and the vanilla is also good. The portion size isn't gigantic, but just right to be able to finish before it melts.
google avatar

Kim R.

Yelp
Everyone needs to stop at Ghirardelli's while in San Francisco! I stopped by earlier in the day and there were NO crowds! I ordered one scoop of ice cream and it was plenty! I had the pralines and cream in a waffle cone Dipped in Chocolate. The chocolate was smooth and rich!
google avatar

Bianca P.

Yelp
1 star off because parking is always tough here but the desserts are always good! We always come in the afternoons and it's a bit crowded but the staff is usually quick to get the orders out in a timely manner. The Treasure Island is my fav! The warm brownie on top of the vanilla ice cream with fudge is amazing! We have tried shakes and other stuff too and it's usually always good!
google avatar

Yuki M.

Yelp
What can you say about this place? Ice cream is good, obviously. Convenient to just go here for a quick scoop if you don't want to deal with the masses upstairs at either locations. Employees are clearly not interested in what they're being paid to do but you're not there to make friends; you're there to get fat. One scoop, two scoops, three scoops, four. Pay for your guilt then get out the door. Next.

Cynthia B.

Yelp
The sundae was good, didn't buy the chocolate, same chocolate you could get at Ross or Marshall's.
google avatar

Garett S.

Yelp
In the mood for a classic ice cream sundae? Then Ghirardelli is the place to go. Ghirardelli is a classic ice cream place that serves traditional sundaes and a variety of their signature chocolates. The ice cream flavors are somewhat limited to more traditional flavors. The one thing you have to get here is of an ice cream sundae of course. I had the strike it rich Sundae (chocolate & butterscotch) The taste was pretty good the high light was the warm thick chocolate at the top. The butterscotch was just alright, unless your a fan of butterscotch your probably better ordering different. The chocolate shop offers a great experience for kids and adults alike. Great experience for those visiting San Francisco.
google avatar

Angie G.

Yelp
With some time to spare until the reception we were to attend later in the evening we decided to head down Lombard street to Ghiradelli Square for a Sundae by the water.  We got the Chrissy Fields sundae which was our favorite and it was delicious. The whole thing was just yummy - from the soft cookies to the warm brownie to the cookies and cream ice cream to the hot fudge! The customer service was great and the speed of our order was perfect. We found a nice seat with a view of the ocean, our experience couldn't have been better. The only problem I had was with parking, the structure underneath the square is a pain in the you know what. If you have a car anything bigger than an economy size expect to have some difficulty. Overall, I would definitely recommend this place!
google avatar

Kristen C.

Yelp
All day everydddaaay!!! Every time I fly into San Fran this is the place I go first. I always order the brownie sundae with coffee ice cream and lots of hot fudge. It's amazing.... Grab your ice cream and walk across the street to sit and admire the beautiful views. The line can sometimes be long, but it moves and it's worth the wait. The hype is real for me on this place, but perhaps it's full of nostalgia as well. Which makes it even better. The piers are all close by so grab a cone and walk around! Great way to start the day!!
google avatar

Melissa S.

Yelp
For an easy walk go to the one across from Fisherman's wharf on the Main Street. It's quick and easy and they have a walk up counter. You get the same thing if you walk to the main fountain, due to Covid. Maybe if you went during other times the inside may have a larger selection. The Sunday's are quite pricy and delicious at the same time. I probably won't return unless I had out of town guests. It was too pricy for me, but it's a great novelty.
google avatar

Josephine A.

Yelp
Dessert: 5/5 Service: 4/5 Price: 4/5 Pros ~ Great desserts, super sweet and lots of gifts to bring home Cons ~ Small store, can easily get crowded or have a long wait Dessert Recommendations: ~ Banana Split
google avatar

Yelp
After you've consumed all of the yummylicious Dungeness crab and Boston clam chowder in a bread bowl at Fisherman's Wharf, head over to Ghirardelli Square to satisfy that sweet tooth. Ice cream and chocolate, here we come! From the beautiful green grassy area at San Francisco Maritime National Park, you'll want to dash over to Ghirardelli-On-The-Go, grab a dessert for you and your honey, and return to the park to watch the sunset over the Golden Gate Bridge. The On-The-Go shop is much smaller than the Original Ice Cream & Chocolate Shop also located on Russian Hill. But, it still offers the classic Banana Split, Sundae, Ice Cream Cone, Shake, Beverages, and Chocolates without the chocolate factory feel and capacity for more seating. I like that they offer Hot Fudge in either Milk Chocolate or Dark Chocolate! I love love love Dark Chocolate. Since it was Easter weekend I ordered the Easter Bunny Sundae for $6.75, which included a scoop of vanilla ice cream, dark hot fudge, whipped cream, sprinkles, topped with a chocolate bunny and six Ghirardelli chocolate eggs on the side. It was delicious. The hot fudge was decadent and the ice cream was creamy and delicious. A perfect treat for anyone not wanting to share a dessert. ;-) Even though there are only about four tables outside and three bar stools inside, there is plenty of seating within the Square or across the street at the Maritime National Park. The only downside during our visit was the one man show scooping up ice cream. The cashier moved customers through the line very quickly, but a large number of customers were left waiting & watching in very small quarters. Once this process improves, it'll make for a great experience overall!
google avatar

Connie W.

Yelp
Went to the Marketplace shop upstairs but it was too crowded so came down to the street level On-The-Go shop. (This corner shop used to be Boudin many years ago.) Ordered Crissy Field - rich cream on top of rich fudge on top of cookies&cream ice cream surrounded by crumble chocolate chip cookie and embellished with milk chocolate caramel mini bars. We came here because I wanted to show my family this SF icon institution even though I am not a big fan; their desserts are too rich and sweet for my liking.
google avatar

Kelly M.

Yelp
During Covid, ice cream, coffee drinks and sundaes are being sold out of this street level shop. It's a limited menu with three sundaes, shakes, hot chocolate, and lattes, etc. Beware! They use 3 espresso shots in their small drinks! They let only two people into the store at once. I went on a Tuesday afternoon and there was no line. They bring your order outside and call your name. There is an area to wait. It was perfect to buy a sundae then walk over to the beach. Some bleacher like concrete seating gives a fantastic view and is a nice place to enjoy your ice cream.

Yelp
This morning ,Stopped in for a quick Coffee and a milkshake for my daughter while attending a race at the Aquatic Park. Man behind the counter couldn't be bothered from his cell phone. No greetings.. rang us up, still distracted by phone. Good coffee. Good shake. Too bad...
