Gia

"Gia đình, meaning "family", is a reference to chef Sam Tran and partner Long Tran's longing for their homeland during their years working abroad. The restaurant decor draws inspiration from the Temple of Literature just across the road. Their 12-course set menu changes with the seasons and is informed by Vietnamese culinary heritage. Deceptively complex, the beautifully crafted dishes showcase well-judged combinations of subtle flavours, with acidity and texture playing prominent roles." - Michelin Inspector

It was a nice evening but with some hick ups. The presentation is very nice and with a high level explanation of the plates on the roof of the house, and deeper explanations by the staff that speaks very well English. Things are going very fast and I needed to ask twice to have a 10’ break! The 12 course menu is in fact a 10 course menu, as the first 3 plates are more 3 small “greetings from the kitchen” a 3 in 1! We did the alcoholic and wine tasting pairing: the alcoholic had some sake, beer, wine and cocktail. The pisco sour cocktail with Vietnamese twist was way too salty and was not in line with the taste of the pork and Makrele. The wine pairing is mostly from France but from unknown territories like pyrenees and Jura… don’t expect to get a nice Bordeaux! In total 4 white wines from which 1 orange natural wine from Japan and 1 red Pinot noir from Tasmania. The sommelier was in my way a bit too forward, not open for feedback and to confident: his choices/mixes are the optimum for the plate! All in all… this is solely our opinion, 336$ for 2 persons is too expensive… as it’s still a stretch to reach European Michelin 1 star level and we may not forget that we are in Vietnam where prices should be way lower then in the old world. It was nice to try some special dishes that are rare find like the red jellyfish and the mantis shrimp.

We would like to thank the Gia team for an unforgettable evening. Every element of the ambience, music and lighting makes you forget the outside world. Every course was a highlight in terms of aesthetics, composition and flavour, the likes of which we have never experienced before. The cherry on the cake is the team. Absolutely charming, courteous and entertaining. An absolute 11 on a scale of 1-10.

I have experienced many fine dining restaurants in Vietnam too. So far, this Gia restaurant is the best restaurant in Hà Nội. It has a high price. But surely they deserve it with the 1 Michelin star too. 1 day before I visited here I also visited the French Grill, and had visited Kumihiko about 3 months before. I highly recommend to visit here. At the first bite of the oyster starter, I had a strong feeling that this restaurant is The Real. All the combinations of the foods are great. The head chef, she finds good quality of ingredients from Vietnam, even somewhere my Vietnamese girl friend does not know where it is or what kind of ingredient it is. Ordering alcohol pairing would be nice. Since you just have to pay about 500k VND more, while each glass costs the almost same price. I really enjoyed all the menu from the start to the end. They may change the menu every season since they want to use the fresh season menu. I would like to visit here every season. I hope they write some more of the explanations of the each menu, so I don't have to ask the waiter again. Also this way makes the customer to remember the foods and the effort of the chefs easily. The point I got impressed again was about the dessert. Before the main one comes, they serve pre-dessert. Also petit four follows. They invited us to their kitchen too. I could see head chef's enthusiasm was great. She is a strong woman chef. I look forward to visit here again

This restaurant was more than perfect and they certainly earned their one Michelin. Such a unique taste and take on Vietnamese ingredients with influences from France and Japan. The service was flawless and the staff was very helpful to explain the dishes. Try the lunch course slightly more affordable but either lunch or dinner are certainly worth it. From start to finish we enjoyed every bite and we are glad that we started our first trip to Hanoi with lunch at Gia!

My love for Vietnamese cuisine took me here. It was fully booked so I had to be waitlisted and luckily was contacted the next day and had to pay deposit of 500 vnd which they said will be refunded to my card when I settled my bill after dining. I was curious about the name Gia and learned that it means family in Vietnamese. I usually do not read reviews and website prior to eating at a restaurant to have the full experience. The only course that stood out for me on this Winter 2024 tasting menu is the Willow Leaf Fish, I thought that whole dish goes well together. I’d like to give them a try again next time I am in Hanoi.

We made the trip across town to Gia Restaurant last night. It was well worth the trip & the traffic & rain. The tasting menu is always the way to go and they didn’t disappoint. Each course worked around a different theme: monkfish, red bissau shrimp, beef tartare, aralia leaves, marbled eel (so goood!), grape, greasyback shrimp, quail, wagyu beef, mushroom, coconut, and finally lotus. Well worth a visit if you want to try the new wave in Vietnamese fine dining.

Outstanding, interactive, fun and unstuffy service. Interesting wine pairings and ingredient-focused regional Vietnamese cuisine with technical and precise execution. Staff is clearly proud of their culinary heritage and culture and excited to share it with guests. If they operate as well as they did during my visit consistently, they should be awarded a second star (I've eaten at many Michelin starred restaurants in Asia). This is the vanguard of modern Vietnamese fine dining in Hanoi. The talented young staff here will be the ones who shape this city's fine dining culture as the city evolves and Vietnam continues to modernize. Overall a very memorable experience. Price was around $250 USD with wine pairing and 3 extra glasses of wine for 1 person. Worth every penny. The whole experience took around 3 hours.

I visited with my family in November, this was our first dinner together in Hanoi. The service was excellent, each course was explained in vietnamese (for my parents) and english. The ceviche inspired dish with raw fish and passionfruit was excellent, my favourite of the courses. This was adapted for my parents who are unable to eat raw fish. Beef course was excellent, tender and rich. Mushroom rice was also excellent, the mushroom pate really tied the dish together. The banh duc dish lacked enough prawns for my taste but the broth was perfect. Non alcoholic pairings were excellent. Before dessert, we were given a kitchen tour where we were served a cookie and coconut drink. Dessert was served downstairs in a more casual setting. 3 sorbets made from fruits of your choice. A mung bean ice cream and mung bean cakes shaped into fruits, with biscuits and lotus crisps. Dessert was the least exciting part of the meal but finished off the experience neatly.
