FCB Chicago, the ad firm behind the Giant/Glad Bags Dinner Gimmick in Chicago, apologizes | Eater Chicago

"A popular Logan Square restaurant that opened in 2016 and appears on Eater Chicago’s 38, the chef-owner — a Beard Award–nominated Jason Vincent — participated in a controversial, agency-led promotional dinner with Glad/FCB Chicago that invited food writers and influencers to sample a purported new menu with cameras present. After two seatings, guests learned there was no new menu and that some dishes had been prepared up to three days earlier and preserved with Glad wrap, which sparked anger over the lack of transparency; the second seating was warned in advance. The invite used the hashtag #ThreeMoons, and diners were later asked to sign consent forms offering $300 and an additional $1,000 if their footage appeared in a Glad video. The chef apologized in person and on social media, explained the financial incentive to rent the normally-closed space for the event, and the incident prompted criticism of the ad agency’s tactics and broader discussion about disclosure and consent in influencer/PR events." - Ashok Selvam

The Warbler’s Comfort Food Impresses a Pair of Critics | Eater Chicago

"A wonderfully quirky, highly sought-after spot known for playful, deeply flavorful dishes that command attention. Highlights include a super uni shooter — a deep-fried orb blending uni, butter and condensed milk that achieves a sweet-salty-bitter richness — Parmesan-dusted onion rings that surprisingly work, and a housemade “Sortallini” filled with guanciale, pine nuts and smoked tomato butter sauce that’s a can’t-miss. Desserts are nostalgic and deeply flavored, such as a gooey babka paired with banana ice cream, coffee-caramel sauce and figs. From presentation to taste, the food insists you put down your phone and eat." - Jeffy Mai

Google
I have always liked shopping at Giant. The store stocks a lot of different foods. The prices are reasonable. Their Giant brand items are just as good as the name brand items. The store is always clean and stocked well. The employees are helpful when you need assistance.

Google
This Giant location is a great store to visit for your grocery needs. The staff are knowledgeable and very professional. The stores self checkout registers are the best I've seen with almost all of the registers open and easy to use. Keep up the good work 👍

Google
Giant's Fried Chicken is WAY better than it has any right to be. Now I could wax eloquent about breading that's so crunchy it puts chips to shame. I could go on about seasoning so delicious it would make your grandmother jealous. I could even bore you with tales of chicken so real it'll make you doubt your own existence. But I won't bother with all that. Instead, I'll simply predict your future: you'll buy Giant's fried chicken for the first time because you're in a hurry, you want a quick dinner, and you heard some well-spoken chap on Google reviews raving about it. You'll buy it for the 569th time because it's just. that. good.

Google
Came here for the first time to pick up specific items that are not at my local Giant in Lansdowne. The self checkout was busy but seemed to be moving a bit slowly so I went to a cashier, she was very rude and seemed impolite. I was polite and said hi to her she didn’t even respond, I also asked her a question to which she gave the driest response to. It all just seemed rude for a customer service facing role. On a better note, they did have a nice selection of stuff and it was clean and appeared to be nicely organized. The customer service was terrible though, and I’ll stick to ShopRite in Drexel Hill in the future when needed.

Google
Wow! That's all I can say. Just met one of the nicest people at Giant supermarket. Oh by the way I bought a beautiful bouquet of flowers which she arranged for me. I didn't even know GIANT had a floral center. Did I mention I spent less then $30 for this BEAUTIFUL BOUQUET of flowers, which my wife LOVED! Thanks GIant for hiring such an INCREDIBLE person. She embodies what SUPERIOR CUSTOMER SERVICE should look like!

Google
We love Giant, and the staff are phenomenal. We ordered a fruit tray and accidentally dropped it, but they were able to remake it for us within 10 minutes. Thanks again!

Google
I went here specifically for their large variety of freshly made food. I headed straight for the sushi aisle and also grabbed some precooked chicken wings. The sushi was delicious as usual and I was actually surprised by the wings because I never purchased them before. The sweet chili were our favorite. I also enjoyed their self check out with a large belt and bagging area. It made checking out so easy and convenient.

Google
I enjoy going to this Giant to do some of my shopping. The place is always clean and the workers are very helpful and nice. I also enjoy seeing all the crazy pop tarts and cereals they have in stock.

Yelp
This used to be my go to grocery store and my recent visit reminded me why I stopped going. Honestly don't miss it at all. Too many times I have gotten fruit here and had it instantly go bad. The order at the deli kiosk thing is great in theory. If it's working you should be able to put in your order and then go shopping. However, whenever we go it is conveniently turned off or out of order. So, you have to wait forever to even put in your deli order and then start your shopping. Also, I know this is a Havertown law but they did away with plastic bags so you have to bring your own bags and bag it yourself. Overall, if I have to deal with all that I would rather go to Aldi for half the price.

Yelp
I use the pharmacy at the Giant store in Havertown often. The pharmacist and pharmacy helpers are wonderful. They are always helpful and polite. I transferred all my prescriptions to Giant and wish I did it sooner. If looking for an efficient pharmacy with terrific staff, try the Giant pharmacy in Havertown.

Marthe A.

Yelp
People are friendly. Used Giant direct for the first time today. What I ordered vs what I received: 20-24 lb turkey - received 16 lb turkey. Able to trade up to a 19 lb turkey. No refund of the difference in price. Live rosemary plant - received less expensive pkge of rosemary - no refund of the price difference Live thyme plant - received pjge of thyme - no refund of the price difference Flat leaf parsley - received Sage pkge - received Celery - received Chicken broth - received Scallions - absent - no refund Had to go into the store and spend a bit of time on the turkey exchange Overall of 8 items, 50% incorrect =fail Will not use again

Yelp
They have the rudest employees. Always miserable. The self checkout is horrible. Especially the female employees. One Always tries to make you go to a cashier saying you have over 20 items but they refuse to count them. The only good thing about this giant store is the people working in the pharmacy. Always friendly and helpful.a

Yelp
Too often I encounter store employees on break in front of the store puffing on cigarettes. Disgusting. Me and my young child/pregnant wife should not be exposed to secondhand smoke while trying to shop for groceries. It's shameful that they allow this right in front of the store in the covered openings near the entrance. Even by the edge of the parking area with the picnic benches is too close to your patrons who want to breathe clean air while loading their groceries into their cars. This location and many others have multiple self-checkout lanes but the staff is inadequate to handle the flow. Too often there are multiple lanes waiting on one employee to clear a code or check the weight of something. The few times I have seen two employees working self-check-out one is often looking into the distance with a confused look when they are to be directing customers to open stalls for checkout. This happened once when the self-checkout line went back to the frozen food section. Come on lady, you really have one job at that moment. Big shout out to the guy who manages the beer/wine area... he is always so helpful and works to source really quality products from all over. The bakery has been doing a much better job of getting their donuts out in a timely manner. Just a year or two ago the donuts would be out about a half hour after opening which is an issue when I'm in charge of picking up donuts for my students and I need to be in my building by 7am, so that's an improvement. I still come in here on occasion but this is not my preferred Giant anymore... I hope they can solve the smoking issue, that seems like such low-hanging fruit.

Carol M.

Yelp
Giant had good prices tonight, however, when I was checking out, I asked the cashier for help she stated "I need to go" and then called out for someone else to do her job, and walked away. I work with the public everyday and serve the people of our community. I do not leave my position until every individual I meet has been taken care of. Hence, her mannerisms and customer service skills were unacceptable. Sorry Giant, I can only give you 2 stars, customer care is very important to me!

Yelp
It's clean and has a huge selection of anything you could need (except for fabric softener for whatever reason!) Try their lava cake in their dessert section as well as their pesto. The cashiers are insanely slow, however, but self checkout makes it bearable here.

Yelp
This is probably my favorite Giant food store in the area. It's HUGE but the parking lot is not large enough. During busy times I find myself shying away. They do share it with a few other stores so that doesn't help. Plus they have a gas station so that eats up a bit of the lot. There is a station to scan while you shop. I could never get it to work with my card so I stopped trying. There is so much to choose from and this is great if your child has allergies or is glutten free or if you just like organic items. Many choices in all the departments. You can also pick up prepared foods here which is great if you're having a party. I pass a few food markets before this location so I don't come here often. I do like coming in to pick up a few specialty items. They also have a nice produce section. Yes I'll be back.

Lois S.

Yelp
Stopped shopping at Giant over a year ago. Horrible experience using the self checkout. I had a large order and that was my first mistake using their self checkout. Could not place checked out items back in my cart without system repeating "place item in the bagging area." Associate had to come over several times because "Help Is On the Way" error message. Associate became impatient and got nasty with me. I left disgusted and vowed never to shop there again and I haven't.

Yelp
This store is getting worse. When using the self checkout, make sure you rescan your bonus card every time they fix your machine or you will be pay -ing full price. their attendance don't know what they're doing. Or maybe they do? As of today I am done shopping havertown giant

Ayana S.

Yelp
The food is fine, but the new check out system is absolutely awful. They only had self-check out, which saves the store money, but nobody likes it. I don't appreciate having a stupid machine not understand the purchase or require that I wait for an assistant 3X. These machines also make a lot of noise and make the entire shopping experience unpleasant. What happened to caring about customer experience?

Suzanne C.

Yelp
I dont know why I torture myself! Tried to get a scanner...none working. Tried to weigh my fruit...no working scales. Went to grab a bag of white potatoes...none there. Waited 25 minutes at the deli counter and there was only 3 other people in line. Ugh! There's also tons of trash in parking lot. Cant wait for Drexeline to open.

Alonzo M.

Yelp
Some of the workers there need to be checked. Their people skills are pretty bad. I understand most of the young folks don't want to be there but that does mean you need to be rude to others for just existing. Kinda embarrassing

Yelp
I agree with my good Yelp friend Teri R. It's hard to judge a grocery store when it first opens. You would expect everything to be bright and new and it is. You would expect the shelves to be beautifully stocked and they are. You would expect all kinds of grand Opening Specials and they're everywhere. The grocery market in Havertown is about to get interesting. A few tenths of a mile one way is Acme and a few tenths another way is Super Fresh. These folks are right in the middle. BTW, it's hard not to compare this store to the Wegmans in KOP. It's clear they are going for the same look and feel. There are a few things about this store I really like already. There is a licensed Starbucks inside. I'll definitely make use of them. There is a nicely organized and extensive section of craft beers they call the Beer Garden. Don't thing this is like the Pub at Wegmans. It's not a place to sit and drink but to buy beer to-go. They have those mini-carts similar to those at Wegmans. I love them. They are open 24/7. They aisles are very wide and it's easy to maneuver. The signage is also very good. As we move forward past the Grand Opening the bottom line is going to be prices, freshness and customer service. Only time will tell. For now I'm going for three stars.

Yelp
Best store always nice and clean. Pharmacy is the best very friendly and convenient. The pharmacist John the best.

Yelp
Cashiers are extremely rude, also discounts never match whatever they have on the label. You need to fight to get the discount what they offer in the labels.

Yelp
Good evening to my Yelp Family!!! I had to update my review to give a shout- out to three Giant employees: Julissa, Ever and Toni. Julissa and Ever both work in the Customer Service Department and sometimes you will find Julissa working at Customer Self-Checkout. Julissa and Ever are both friendly and nice, personable and warm. They are both ready to assist with whatever concern you may have. They are both an asset to Giant -Havertown. I wanted to add another name here: Toni, who works at the gas station. Toni is always kind and gracious!!! Toni always smiles and makes everyone feel welcome!! Toni is a joy to be around!! Till next review, Yelp Family!!!!

Yelp
After 30ish great experiences ordering cakes at Giant in Havertown, I've bought my last one. The man taking my order was extremely rude the whole time. He spent 5 minutes arguing why he shouldn't write down several basic instructions instead of the 5 seconds it would take to do so. Ultimately, the cake was wrong because he refused to write down what I was asking him to do. Done with Giant bakery.

Liz S.

Yelp
Just left here a little while. I had a cashier ring me up. I stood at lottery ticket machine for at least 5 mi.utes picking scratches, maybe longer. I then stsrt walking quite fast out the store because i have to pick mu son up at train and cart just locks up, thriws my back and neck!!!!!! Wtf then a young lady says the carts just lock up to see if everything was paid for and am i offended. Are you effin serious right now? What brainiac came up with this? You are going to have tons of lawsuits because i am now on my way to the emergency room and cant turn my neck to the left because of the effin cart just locking up while im rushing out. Yes i paid foreverything andshe checked my receipt. So mow who is at fault since you just effed my neck up

Yelp
Situated in Haverford Township (pop.50,000 +) and bordering Upper Darby Township, (pop. 85,000) this Giant does a great business and continues to ring the bell for corporate, but its inability to staff and regulate the crowds that this store regularly brings is appalling. Like many in the industry, they've chosen to utilize automation and I've embraced the self-check out model currently employed in the store, but when store management has 3-4 employees servicing the numerous self-checkout lines, there are going to be challenges for the employees and more importantly the customer who not only have committed to given their finances, but their time as well. Sitting in lines to self check out for 30+ minutes is a horrible experience before dealing with any technical glitches that arise. The fact that there is no management presence to communicate with customers and staff speaks to the lack of leadership. I left the retail world a long-time ago, but profits and customer service go hand and hand. Get it together!

Linda K.

Yelp
Yesterday I had the worst time at this store. Self checkout girl didnothing to help us Manager Even worse. The deli I told her I want my Meat sliced very thin. She showedme and I said Perfect got home I couldn't get over how thick it was awful........never going back again will always go to acme

Yelp
was about to prep the ham for tomorrow and when i opened it found mold. and because of the coronavirus i can't return it so i just have to throw it out. so my mother's day dinner is shot to hell. i won't ever buy another one from giant

J M.

Yelp
distopian nightmare. They have a robit that follows you around tge store. They they no longer have chechout people. As a customer you feel like a cattle being herded around the store when you reach the chechout lines they are long and when you finally get to where there used to be a friendly cashier there is just a computer screen beeping at you and repeating orders to you "place the item in the bag" I sometimes still go in tgis store only because it is next to Lowes
google avatar

Adam G.

Yelp
I love this Giant. Its bright, easy to navigate, plenty of parking and the even have scan & bag as you shop so you dont have to wast time waiting for one of their happu cashiers.
google avatar

Dennis T.

Yelp
I cannot believe that Giant added so many new self-checkout lines. I loved when they added more of the smaller self-checkout machines. But when I went the other day there were only 2 checkouts lines open with cashiers. And the people in the new self-checkout lines were so slow. So the wait for a checkouts line with a cashier was very long. Not very good customer service.
google avatar

Alexis P.

Yelp
So I have mixed reviews for this Giant location: Pros: 1. One of the few giants in the area that sells Beer and Wine 2. The Giant has it attached so you can use your reward points and fill your tank after shopping. 3. It is HUGE so you should always find what you are looking for. 4. They have take away food (pre cooked) for lazy days. Cons: 1. Parking lot is always busy, regardless of time 2. The lines can get very long on Saturdays and Sundays 3. It can be hard to find items since the store is so large
google avatar

P E.

Yelp
Generally a great store with lots of choices and mostly good staff. I did not care for the service I received at checkout. I like the fact that you can get gas here to cash in your points and that those points you just earned do show up on your card right away.
google avatar

Joey M.

Yelp
These food stores tend to be big but pricey compared to other supermarkets in the area. Just my perception? My favorite thing about THIS location is the beer garden! Beer beer beer! They have a large selection of craft beers and I love it! I even found my favorite beer here (Rogue Hazelnut) which I have had trouble finding on the west coast! I also find that when I come here I am drawn to the sushi section, fo no particular reason at all. I mean pre-packaged sushi is never as good as the freshly prepared stuff. In any event, I got suckered in (again) to getting a sushi roll (see pic). It was decent considering it was prepackaged and all and it sure was pretty to look at. I will obviously continue to frequent this venue.

S C.

Yelp
Possibly the worst store in Delco. The store is filthy dirty, low on inventory and understaffed. I will go out of my way to avoid that store from now on.

James Z.

Yelp
Best run grocery chain in the country. Well managed and employees show it. Also great experience getting vaccine from giant!
google avatar

Kathy G.

Yelp
Ok, here goes: I've accepted the fact that in 2018, employees are going to be chattering with each other or looking at their phones instead of paying attention to the customer in front of them. Got it, that's not just Giant, that's everywhere. But, to the people who work at Giant: is it too much to ask that after I've braved Delco traffic and navigated poorly designed parking lots to get to your store, that I and the groceries that I'm buying are treated with a little respect. Like, how about the cashier doesn't just keep the belt moving so that my fruit or my eggs get crushed by the canned soup and the milk. Or that you PRETEND that you're going to help me bag the groceries. Move an arm towards the bag so that it looks like you're contemplating it. Don't worry, I won't expect you to actually DO IT, but it would be nice to imagine, if only for a minute, that you might. And last, but not least, what about a thank you at the end of my order, as in, "thanks for shopping at Giant". Or "thank you for bagging your groceries". I spend hundreds of dollars at your store - literally - and a thank you for my business would not be out of line.
google avatar

Mary Kay D.

Yelp
For all the night staff who work so hard to accommodate me and provide friendly and efficient service, especially Corey in produce and Val at the checkout I am so grateful. Its not easy to work late at night. The workers in the aisles are so nice and aware of leaving space for customers. Thank you!
google avatar

Bob K.

Yelp
After months of contemplating writing a review, today's pitiful selection at the hot bar finally pushed me over the edge. The store is pretty good overall, but the hot bar is by far the worst of any Giant I've ever been to. Often times the food doesn't even match the posted schedule, and about half the time the food looks so bad I won't even touch it. Today I went in hoping for some fish and mac&cheese. Well, the "Tilapia" was burnt and dry, the remnants of the Mac and cheese looked like it had been sitting there since last night. Getting there at 11am, I would expect a full tray of fresh food, not the leftovers from yesterday. It was completely disgusting, and it's not unusual for me to walk out of there disappointed. Don't go here for a quick grab and go lunch.

Susan C.

Yelp
Bought cooked shrimp at Seafood Counter last Thursday. Were inedible the next day, spoiled. No wonder they were on sale.
google avatar

Gina M.

Yelp
It seriously pains me to be writing this update. I LOVED this Giant. Like, in an emotional way. And I still love that it's clean and has a lot of variety and great sale prices, so on and so forth and what have you. However, I'm sorry to say that I can no longer frequent this store due to its poor customer service. I don't know if they got a new manager or what, but in the past few months things there have gone seriously downhill. There are rarely people available to bag groceries, which in turn slows checkout lines while the cashier and customer both try to do it. More than once I've gotten in a line with a bagger only to have that person walk away after finishing up with a customer. In this same time period they have also gotten into the habit of stocking shelves during high traffic times - like Sunday's at 11. I get that items need to be on shelves, but I've seen them rearranging shelves during this time too - not necessary. It doesn't appear that they're just filling up on out of stock items - there are big carts and empty boxes in nearly every aisle at times. It causes so much traffic in the aisles and too many times you can't reach what you need. My biggest complaint is about the deli, though. One of my favorite things about this store is the ability to order your deli items from a kiosk, do all of your shopping, and then whip around and pick up your items - no need to grab a number and wait. This kiosk allows you to specify how you want your items sliced. I always choose Very Thin, and I used to get it. For several months now, however, my meat has been cut so thick that even my carnivore husband is grossed out by it. Yesterday I had enough and just left it there, going then to a different store for those items. I wish this store had maintained the high quality experience it had in the beginning, but unfortunately it hasn't and as a result, it's former biggest fan will be shopping elsewhere.

Yelp
This Giant location is bigger than most in the Greater Philadelphia area, and it's pretty newly updated. Starbucks inside, scanners you can take along with you while shopping, nice beer and wine section, and just a really nice store all around!
google avatar

Ken F.

Yelp
The new Giant is now firing on all cylinders. Giant has good prices, outstanding customer service and a broad selection. I have gone to the Giant in Springfield for a few years and am so happy to have this store a few blocks away. I paid $2.49 for gas last week with bonus points. You can't beat that! I don't wish anyone ill will but I will be happy to see Super fresh bite the big one with their understaffed and overpriced store. Giant gets it right.

Yelp
Self check out employees = Terrible. I was trying to scan a barcode that was around the can and it wasn't picking up on the scanner. I asked the 3 (one of who was a manager) giant employees for help. None of them moved a muscle. After they were done their conversation the manager rudely asked if I needed help. I explained my situation . She said you have to hit Start. I told her I already did hit start. She went back to talking. It was just so rude. Unbelievably terrible customer service. Literally never going into that place again.
google avatar

Kim G.

Yelp
This review is exclusively for the bakery. (The rest of the grocery, produce/meat, etc are great!!) the bakery has terrible service. The people were nice enough. I ordered a cake 4 days ago. Was called the day of to be told they didn't have the flavor we ordered. Then went to pick it up & the name was spelled wrong (it was an online order so it was typed out correctly). The poor girl tried her best to fix it but it still looked terrible. Redeeming factor - I got 1/2 off for my terrible cake. Very disappointed. Will not order or recommend.
google avatar

Alex P.

Yelp
They have Chinese pork buns!! Tasty looking sushi, soups, and already hot lunches. And seating outside. This option might be just as good as the Chipotle or Panera Bread next door.

Yelp
Okay, I'm just reviewing regarding my last visit to the store, last night 9/29/14. Last night it was raining, idiots were everywhere and it was crowded in the store. I have to admit, I was surprised because it was 7pm on a Monday night, not the usual night and time for a packed house at the grocery store. I have to complain about the lack of stock available, or should I say, not available, as well as the employees standing around like a bump on a log. I understand that the stockers are there to stock product, but why are they allowed to wear headphones? How am I suppose to be able to interact with them regarding said products or questions about where something is? I just feel like it's inappropriate to be wearing headphones while on the floor. Now, why is it Monday night and you are still two days out of the same products? Shouldn't the products have come in already for the beginning of the week? Shouldn't you be ordering MORE product for the fact that you know it's constantly sold out? Obviously it's a popular product and sells well, so order more! Finally, when I see an older manager and a young blonde employee standing in the same spot for well over 10 mins, and they literally aren't doing ANYTHING, one has to wondering what they really ARE doing. Perhaps you could move the empty U boat out of the way so I can get to the product you actually do have in stock? Thanks, you're a peach.

Yelp
It's a supermarket, but I like Giant because one time I came across donut peaches and felt in love. Although I forgot, which Giant I was at. This location in particular was good, clean and I got what I needed.

Yelp
This place was MOBBED this Saturday. I'm so glad there is another grocery option in the area. I stopped by to get party supplies for my kiddo's third bday. I ALWAYS love Giant's bakery items- the cakes are good and the frosting is better. They have a large enough selection that I didn't even bother ordering it ahead of time but you certainly can! The lines were hella long- but it was 12noon on a Saturday on the last day the gas card deal was available. There's also a STARBUCKS THERE!! I love coffee. Love.

Yelp
I really love this Giant. We shop there on the regular. Perks: Starbucks Fresh fruit and veggies Beer Garden (you can drink up to 3 beers on the premises) Normally lots of open checkout lines Nutritionist on site that does tours and will host events. $.10 off on their gas for every $100 you spend within a time frame with no cap. So share your card! Cons: Baggers overfill the bags and they rip. Watch them as they bag. They no longer will offer to scan the store card for you like they use to. You must now ask. I know it's a way to make money but it seems a bit deceptive. And it always felt like good customer service that they were trying to help you. Now they're trying to just make you spend more.

Yelp
Parking was easy and the store was clean and had solid prices. It was not too packed so the lines were fast. Overall a good grocery store.

Yelp
I've been waiting months for this store to open up and boy, has it been worth the wait! The store is organized in a logical manner and it is very easy to navigate once you have the lay of the land. What I especially like is the natural foods section - very generous space is given to organic foods and health and beauty aids. The produce is high quality and reasonably priced. The meat section is huge and offers a great selection. I have not had a chance to sample the salad bars yet, though it's great to have Starbucks in the store! The cashiers are friendly and polite and employees on the floor seem willing to assist. I believe that there was definitely a need for a new supermarket in the 19083 zip code and this store does not disappoint. The beer garden is great - there is a huge selection of regional and microbreweries. A nice bonus is the Giant Gas Station, where you can redeem points on your bonus card for a discount on gasoline. I look forward to many years of shopping at this Giant location - it's the biggest and the best Giant in this region.

Yelp
The name is apt. I love the fact that one can purchase beer here - and fun ones at that. I'm not a beer drinker so it's nice to be able to stop in here for a few bottles for those times that my beer drinking friends stop by. I also like the pre-made food section. My partner and I enjoy cooking, but for when being a student as well as an educator gets in the way of normal life, it's great to have this as an option outside of delivery. The store is wonderfully clean too! I worked in a grocery store as a kid and know the common dirty areas and this one meets my white glove test :)
