The 25 Best Restaurants In Rome 2024

"Giggetto is in the heart of Rome’s Jewish Ghetto. Once a place of poverty and oppression, this vibrant and historic neighborhood is home to the city’s main synagogue, shops, an ancient archaeological site, and fantastic restaurants where you can try Roman Jewish cuisine. You’ll find traditional Roman Jewish appetizers like filetto di baccalà and deep-fried whole artichokes whose leaves become thin and crispy like potato chips. This is not a kosher restaurant, so you can still try the gricia, a pasta sauce with pecorino cheese and crispy chunks of guanciale, or the amatriciana made with bucatini. In the warmer weather, grab a table outside next to fragments of an ancient temple dedicated to Apollo." - gillian mcguire, annie replogle

Google
Memorable meal here. We enjoyed their fried zucchini, but the fried artichoke was dry. Oxtail vaccinara style & lamb cacciatora style were super well stewed & packed with flavours. Of all the 4 pastas we sampled, the table voted spaghetti carbonara as the best! Reservations required

Google
I had the fillet steak, which was well cooked but didn't come with the choice of chips or potatoes, only salad options. My wife had the pasta which was the best she had on our visit to Rome. The restaurant is very authentic Italian and has many different sections with real character. Good food, but would have liked better options.

William Kosta

Google
We ordered the artichoke and it was nice. We also ordered 3 pastas: amatriciana, gricia and carbonara. But the carbonara served was embarrassing. I would never serve carbonara like that to my friends, let alone a restaurants, the egg was so clumpy it ruined the whole dish. Hopefully other people don’t experience something like this

Google
I visited on Thursday night, and was very impressed. The staff were lovely and friendly, the food was delicious and well portioned, and the prices were very reasonable. I would recommend the litre of house red wine, it is delicious and only €12. Overall a brilliant spot for dinner in Rome.

Google
Nice restaurant, you can feel its authentic! The artichoke was really tasty and felt fresh. We also ordered the artichoke pasta, it was nice but I think they have better options.

Google
Great restaurant with a beautiful view of some old Rome foundation while sitting outside on their terrasse. The restaurant is located in the “Jewish district” and not too far from there you will see a huge lineup at a famous Jewish pastry shop. You must order their famous artichoke dish (fried) which I never had before. Our waiter handled our tennis team like a PRO and suggested many incredible dishes. Not a cheap place to eat lunch but worth it if you wish to relax and eat well.

Mackers

Google
Mostly came for the experience of trying carciofi alla guidica (Jewish style fried artichoke) and another Roman favorite, bucatini alla'matriciana with extra parmesan. Scenically, the setting is right next to the Porticus Octaviae. It was on my list, but my local friend highly suggested it for these dishes specifically, hence perhaps the differences in reviews. I would say that service varied in how attentive it was, and there were some definite sighs of relaxation when some of the loud tourist tables left (totally understandable)... Speak a little Italian, it goes a long way. As for the food, everything could've been punched up a bit more with salt and seasoning, but the texture of the fried artichoke was nice, and bucatini can do no wrong, it's probably my favorite pasta shape. It was served a bit messily (spots of sauce everywhere) and al dente, but a really good portion size. For the price point, I would say being here in central Rome, it was decent, and it's a decent place to do a bit of people watching too. I paid 30 euros for two dishes and a tiny espresso at the end, June 2024. Yes, this place is wheelchair accessible through most of the in-front seating - there is a back of house seating area, not sure how accessible it is.

Google
Fun and tasty meal. Coratella was very good, as were the pastas and sweetbreads.

Yelp
Always an amazing meal and great service! Dined here two summers in a row (2022 & 2023) when spending time in Roma before or after our vacation cruises.

Yelp
This restaurant has so much charm!! We were excited to try it because it came highly recommend. We loved the fried artichoke and the fried zucchini flower for starters. They were SO good! The artichoke was so, so good and I'm going to be thinking about it for awhileWe also had the lamb and the veal rouladdin. We really liked both and were happy we ordered them.

Yelp
Stumbled upon this place for lunch. Our server was sweet but a little slow. She seemed extremely busy. The fried mozzarella appetizer was not very good. Extremely bland and watery. I order the ragu arancita but was brought the potato one. It was tasty but not what I ordered. The carbonara had great taste but was a little dry. The bacon was nice and crisp and smoky. My friend ordered the eggplant Parmesan and loved it!
google avatar

Jared C.

Yelp
Service was friendly, food was great! We got the fried artichoke (a must), bucatini amatriciana (one of my favorite dishes of our trip), and fettuccine al ragu. All the food was amazing along with the history of the area. Thank you for such a wonderful experience!

Yelp
Being in the Kosher neighborhood, that is a reason alone to pay a visit. It is different instead of another church and more of the tourists. This area is a step away but still within grasp of being visited. Knowing of this, when in Rome we did want to visit for lunch. It was on the list. And this was a place to see as we heard it is one that has been on social media and used in other areas. So we went. It was ideal. We had all the especial in the area. Especially the best of fried Jewish Artichokes. This alone was worth the stop. It was large, fresh, had a good taste, and was worth the stop. It was ideal. We had that along with an order of mozzarela and tomatoes. That was followed by two different pastas. One with pesto that was freshly made that day. And a pasta with more artichoke leaves and olive oil. This was an excellent lunch. The price was fair for what we were to receive. It is an old-school formula and what you would expect. It was great to have the experience and to enjoy something a little different. Thank you.

Yelp
We had dinner here our first night in Rome and it was the best meal of our Italy trip so far. We started with Prosecco and the fried artichoke. For dinner we had the bucatini all'amatriciana and spaghetti al tonno - both were outstanding. Service was excellent and our server recommended a very good red wine. We ended the meal with a glass of limoncello. This place is a can't miss in Rome!
google avatar

Yelp
Came recommended but if your American they stick you in the American section lmao never been to a restaurant that had an American section. The Italians sit up front the Americans sit in the back. At the end of the meal I told the waiter in Italian that my meal was mediocre at best and that I could make better pasta. He then said you speak good Italian and brought me out a different dish of pasta which was great. But it should have been great no matter what language I speak. So be aware if you speak English you will get put in the back and served different food then the Italians.
google avatar

Savannah K.

Yelp
The food is amazing and fresh. The service is great and our waiter (Sherif) was very charming and helpful. The restaurant has a old Italian vibe and there's a cute garden to sit in as well as outside. One of the best stops for amatriciana and suppli!
google avatar

Emma T.

Yelp
I had, and this is not an exaggeration, the best pasta of my life at this restaurant. The Spaghetti Al Tonno is the stuff dreams are made of. The Carciofi were PERFECT- crispy, crunchy, delicious. And you can see Corinthian columns right out the window. If you're not sure where to have dinner, just go here!
google avatar

Sergio C.

Yelp
Food is good. But the service is the worst we had during our stay in Rome. Waiter was absolutely terrible.
google avatar

Tina G.

Yelp
Beware TOURIST TRAP! Skip this one and the one next to it. 2 orders of heartburn garnished with a cute waiter who asked for a tip! Honestly super overpriced and low quality. The famous artichoke is soaked in old frying oil! Yuck ! Follow me for tips as I'm eating my way through Rome . From the Jewish ghetto I only recommend the bakery down the street on the corner. Whole in the wall, but OMG delicious!!!
google avatar

Dan J.

Yelp
Eh not great. Service is DEAD awful. The artichoke is good but extremely sharp, will for sure cut your mouth if you're not careful. Some of the spikes from it got stuck in the back of my mouth and caused a lot of pain. Server overcharged us because we're tourtists... did the same to the table next to us. Pretty lame move. Outside is swarming with scammers that have no problem coming up to your table.

Lisa H.

Yelp
Excellent service from Massimilliano and very good, traditional Roman menu. This is the sister restaurant of the slightly fancier Hostaria Giggetto with a pared down menu. Amazing view of ancient Roman columns and benefit of being on a quiet side street. Bring cash if you'll want to tip.
google avatar

Van G.

Yelp
Yep... a must when in Rome. Street is buzzing with tourist traps, but steer clear and head straight to this sure thing! Their fried artichokes are an ABSOLUTE MUST! They have other fritti, such as the baccalà (which I also highly recommend) and maybe a supplì or two. But save room for first plate. The pastas are exceptional. We ordered carbonara, amatriciana & fettucine al ragù, but I feel like any of the primi are a sure thing. Unfortunately, we didn't make it to seconds (probably full because we cleaned out plates, literally, with that soft on the inside and crunchy on the outside pane Romano. I highly recommend this traditional restaurant smack in the middle of the Jewish ghetto. Great service too
google avatar

Yelp
Loved this local place. Very good fried artichoke and fritti as well as wonderful pasta. Great service, will definitely come back!
google avatar

Philip S.

Yelp
A must for the fried artichokes. When in Rome.... Eat artichokes !!! This place has a special fried artichoke that is fun to eat and quite tasty. The pasta I had was also very good. Some good wines on the list. Service was efficient but not particularly friendly.
google avatar

Nitisha D.

Yelp
Did not like it at all. The only good thing was my server; a nice, older gentleman. I ordered suppli and fried zucchini flower. Both okay. The Cacio E Pepe was dry and salty. The wine felt watered down, it was that light. Oh well, not planning to go back. My only bad meal in Rome in 4 days.

Matt S.

Yelp
Everything we've had at Da Giggetto has been excellent, but the fried artichokes (Carciofi Alla Giudia) are fantastic and the Buccatini All' Amatriciana is among the best we've had anywhere. The Cacio e Pepe is also excellent, but the Amatriciana is so good that we'll probably never order any other pasta here again. Then again, we recently learned that Taste Atlas says Da Giggetto has among the best Penne All'Arrabiata in Italy, so maybe we'll give that a try.

Yelp
We went last night on a recommendation from my mother, but having read some of the reviews on Yelp I had my doubts. As usual, mother knew best! The atmosphere was lively in the front and charming on the back patio. Our server was fun and playful, and also very helpful. As for the food, quite honestly, the fried artichoke was my least favorite thing we had but was still quite tasty. I ordered the cannelloni and ossobucco, both of which were cooked to perfection and just so good. I would highly recommend this spot to anyone looking for a great meal. *side note: after dinner take a short walk to the Roman forum and Coliseum, both are spectacular at night!
google avatar

Carlo M.

Yelp
Location was good with lots of outdoor seating. It was my first experience with the fried artichokes, and I really enjoyed it. I have no basis for comparison, but I thought it was decent. Everything else was pretty standard, but it seemed to be filled with some locals so I think it was a good spot.
google avatar

Lacy O.

Yelp
Literally amazing! 10/10 the best dinner we had in Rome! We loved the fish, artichoke, and the service!
google avatar

Maria R.

Yelp
Yum yum yum! The Jewish style artichoke was amazing, as well as the rice balls. Pasta cooked to perfection! Beautiful, old world atmosphere with the waiters in white jackets and bow ties. A lovely lunch experience.
google avatar

Sharri S.

Yelp
My favorite restaurant in Rome. Found this place on our honeymoon and returned 10 years later with our girls. Does not disappoint in quality of food or atmosphere.
google avatar

MJ Y.

Yelp
Very overrated and touristy with service having a lot of attitude. The fried artichoke looked great but was bland and tasteless,Canelloni was too cheesy and the misto salad was insipid. Much ado about nothing..

Chris S.

Yelp
This restaurant was recommended to us by our Airbnb host and are we ever happy we took him up on it. It's an old quirky restaurants with many different rooms in it. We were able to get in without a reservation but I would highly recommend calling ahead and saving a table. It does get quite busy as most great restaurants in Rome do. The meal was one of the best I've had in my life. We struck up a good rapport with our waiter who may be the best waiter in all of Italy. Friendly and very attentive when we went to order my wife asked for some recommendations. Our waiter basically orders our dinner for us. Of course we had the artichokes fried two ways. My wife had the cod slow cooked in oil and I had the saltimbocca. Not to mention the accompanying wine from their extensive wine list. Sometimes when you take the risk of having someone order for you there is disappointment, that was not the case this time. Everything was delicious. The sauce that came with the saltimbocca was mopped up with the bread and not a drop was left on my plate. I can't recommend this restaurant enough to anyone visiting Rome. The pasta dishes looked fantastic but we wanted to try something else knowing full well we were going to be pasta heavy the rest of our trip. I would return to this restaurant in a heart beat.

Yelp
In an attempt to avoid the packed tourist areas of Rome, we wandered down random alleyways until stumbling upon Giggetto 2, which seems to be a smaller version of the main Giggetto (which we discovered after our meal, when we went just around the corner). It seemed a good place to eat, with only locals and simple atmosphere. The prices were reasonable considering this is Rome. The service was fine, short and to the point, perhaps made a little better by my at least attempting to converse in Italian. We ordered three different kinds of pizza, but what arrived could well have been of the frozen store-bought variety. The dough was barely cooked through, the sauce was warm at best, and the cheese was barely passable. For 10 euro a pizza, you're better off going to the store and buying your own ingredients.
google avatar

Yelp
If only yelp had an option to provide negative stars... I went to Giggetto based on a recommendation from a popular food blogger based in Rome. Most of her suggestions have been great but Giggettos was a huge disappointment. I had the fried artichokes (lukewarm and dripping of brown grease... how is this a house specialty?), fried zucchini flowers which were fishy (anchovies stuffed in the flowers are fine by me but this was horrible.... also €3 / piece), pasta amatriciana and the rigatoni gricia. Both pastas were extremely salty, I took one bite of each and didn't take another. Service is average but I'm from NYC and generally used to the less friendly wait staff. Beware, don't fall for the trap. Avoid like the plague.
google avatar

David L.

Yelp
It's ok, not bad, pretty average and not too special.
google avatar

Aaron N.

Yelp
A very nice little place in the Jewish ghetto. The food was about a 4. The food didn't blow my mind but was worth going back for.

Gia S.

Yelp
Found this gem accidentally while vacationing in the Jewish quarters while in Rome. Made it a point to go back a second time before heading to the airport. Order the lasagne fungi and pasta carbonara. They were out of this world! It's a must when visiting!!
google avatar

Elan K.

Yelp
Get the fried artichokes. Also enjoyed the pasta here as well. Very nice waiters and servers all around. Went for lunch and left very full and very happy!! It's a great spot for a good meal in the Jewish ghetto, especially if you're not looking for a strictly kosher restaurant.
google avatar

Jesse F.

Yelp
Let me start out by saying that I am being kind of generous for giving this place a 3-star review. While the food was decent, though not completely consistent, what faults this place is the service and price of food. I am being lenient, as most restaurants in Italy are not exactly known for their hospitality. However the atmosphere was very relaxed, and it was a nice place to sit and enjoy a meal with friends. I would not recommend to the artichoke that they seem to showcase. (Although it was more pleasant to look at than to eat...) Maybe it is someone else's cup of tea, but for us it just came across as overrated. Though the waiter seemed to think that it was the best in the world. Actually, in a matter of words he basically said just that. My best advice is if you see the place, move on, unless you've tried everything else in Rome. In which case, this is a perfectly mediocre opportunity to enjoy overpriced food and be treated less than dignified. Oh yeah, they did remind us that we can tip extra. Wow, they seem to like tourists after the bill is handed to them. Maybe there's a way that we can you get the bill before we start (;

LOUIS R.

Yelp
SALT SALT AND MORE SALT sent my pressure up had to put fork down. service as if doing me a favor paid and went elsewhere what the heck is with all the salt
google avatar

Andrew W.

Yelp
This place was strongly recommended by our hotel concierge, and it was packed with both tourists and locals. It's on a quaint street and I wanted to like it, but it was just terrible. It was an hour and a half from when we sat down to when we got our first entrees. The outdoor patio is loud and smoky. The croquette appetizer is a single croquette -- not exactly enough to hold you over for an hour and half. My wife liked the zucchini flowers, but they were a little fishy for my taste. (We actually stopped in a couple of nights later - slightly better service, and the zucchini flowers were still tasty to her). Our pasta entrees were both too salty. With so many restaurants in the area, I'd skip this one.

Trevor S.

Yelp
OVERALL: An OK restaurant that seems to benefit greatly from tourists who will only visit once. It's OK, but we probably won't go back. (For the same amount, you could eat at Roberto e Loretta on Via Saturnia in San Giovanni.) FOOD: The food was good/ homey. The osso bucco and coda (each €15) are like pot roasts, but there's more substance to the former than the latter. I expected the coda (tail) to have a lot of bone and fat--which it did--but there were only a couple of pieces, so there wasn't much meat to it. The food was fine, but it's over-priced for what it is. (E.g., €3 for 1 greasy stuffed zucchini flower.) FYI: the house white wine (they were out of red) seemed like a rather thin sauvignon blanc; also just OK. The tiramisu and panna cotta were, again, just OK. AMBIANCE: Do not eat out in front as we did, with occasional wafts of gutter stench and sewage. Instead, eat on the back patio or inside. SERVICE: The waitstaff stayed busy, but they seemed nice only to the Italians. If you're a foreign tourist, expect curt indifference (borderline Parisian, and not in a good way). LOCATION NOTE: The Yelp map pin is deceptively placed (though I've submitted an edit). As the name implies, the restaurant is right next to Portico d' Ottavia on Via Del Portico d'Ottavia. (The Yelp map pin currently indicates that it's on Via Sant'Angelo in Pescheria; that's the back of the restaurant and you'll have to walk the long way 'round to the front.)

Yelp
Ok, my review is based on my experience in 2007. It was fantastic! Not only did the restaurant reserve a large portion of the patio for our wedding party they gave us great service. This is an authentic Italian restaurant especially for Rome. Great food, the croquette's were amazing and the pasta homemade. All produce is brought in from the Tuscany region. If you have never had real Italian food or service, this place could come as a shock. But if you're looking for a true roman experience sans gladiator actors, this is a great place.

Rc T.

Yelp
April 2013. very poor service, the waiter ignored us as soon as he realized that we were tourist. food was average to below. dog in restaurant (which I'm not apposed to.... but...) it was barking and defecating on the floor while we ate. the prices where high and they charged us a ton for bread and water. portions small and bland, primi piatte 18 euro. overall a horrible dinning experience. worst on trip.

Ron A.

Yelp
Could not have been better! The ossobucco simply feel of the marrow rich bone, very rich sauce with fresh peas. The only classic Jewish fried artichoke was crispy yet tender. Who would have thought eating leaves was possible and tasty. And the asparagus Bismarck blew my mind! Service was slow and the place was packed, we got in early and had good seating. The only comment was the service was a bit slow.

Yelp
The BEST pasta ever! A friend recommended this place. Thank you friend! Go! -- Hotspur @ The PJ

Giacomo Z.

Yelp
Booked in advance, they didn't even keep the table. The lady/owner told us to follow a waiter in order to be seated, he left us outside and when asked about a free table in front of us, he answered that everything was already booked. Totally nonsense. We left straight away.

Bill P.

Yelp
Salty-- everything. From the highly recommended artichoke to the baccala and pasta. The chef must have no salt receptors in his/her tongue because everything was covered in heavy amounts of salt. I have traveled all over Italy and this is by far the worst tasting food. The service was good and I liked the square where it is located, but without decent food, none of that matters.
