Where to Find the Best Sandwiches in Philadelphia | Eater Philly

"This Mount Airy bakery gives a New Orleans spin to a Philly classic with its fish hoagie. Lightly battered seafood is piled onto garlic-buttered, toasted long rolls and generously drizzled with rémoulade. The offerings here aren’t limited to white fish filets — fried shrimp, mussels, and salmon are also on offer." - Ernest Owens

Gilben's Bakery - Review - Northwest Philly - Philadelphia - The Infatuation

"Gilben’s Bakery and Sandwich Shop in West Oak Lane is somewhere that you can get a gooey cheesesteak, drippy po’boys, and moist red velvet cake all under one roof. Beyond that, you can find a selection of salads, soul food platters, and a few other things that will make you feel better than finding out you're in one of those random months with an extra payday. Plus, all the sandwiches here are $15 and under so we can get a garlicky shrimp scampi sandwich for less than the cost of a monthly Netflix subscription. And like your go-to comfort show that you know every word to, the po’boy is something you won't forget after you try it. It’s served on a long garlic bread roll, the shrimp is perfectly cooked, and the buttery and oniony coating on the shrimp is good enough that we could put it on everything. On Sundays, they basically turn into a smokehouse with slow-roasted BBQ spare ribs, roasted sweet chili chicken, beef brisket, and smothered pork chops that fall off the bone—and all specials go for under $20. They also serve classic sides like corn on the cob, fluffy mashed potatoes, and mac and cheese. Every single one is good enough for you to voluntarily leave the house even on a rainy weekend for a quick lunch. Food Rundown Extra Cheesy Cheesesteak We know what you’re thinking: If a cheesesteak gets any cheesier, it would essentially be Hamburger Helper trapped by bread. But this place pulls it off, with a roll brushed with garlic sauce that creates a cheesesteak unlike anywhere else in the city. The extra cheese does make the sandwich a little heavier, so it’s best to slice it in half unless you want a sandwich to fall apart like a Nature Valley bar. But even if that’s the case, you’ll just have a mound of cheesy beef and sauteed onions to scoop up, which isn’t a bad thing at all. Grilled Shrimp Scampi Po’Boy The sandwich lathers a mix of creamy sauce and plump shrimp on a warm roll, and it gets a nice crunch from the lettuce and spicy peppers tossed in. From the extra toasty roll to the grilled pieces of the shrimp, there’s some smokiness in each bite that makes the sandwich the perfect mix of butter and charred flavors." - Candis R. McLean

Had Gilbens for the first time a few weeks ago. I immediately went back the following weekend. My suggestion is to order it 'as is' the first time and then customize on your next visit. Shrimp and Fish Po Boys are amazing

Cheese fries was very small but they were tasty and garnished well but not worth the price for frozen fries and a cheese sauce that could fit in the palm of your hand. $6 Fried Shrimp and Salmon Po Boy was good. Large portions of salmon and nice size shrimp. Flavor was good with the exception of the roll. It was toasted with garlic butter which I liked however the roll had some burnt parts on it that took away from the taste. It was also warm, not hot. $22 plus $1 for f/o and cheese Sweet Chili Wings were large but were cold. They were seasoned, garnished and cooked very well. No complaints. $12 The beef cheesesteak was highly seasoned……a little too seasoned because it took away from the flavor the meat and cheese. It’s still ok, it’s just not a traditional tasting cheesesteak. $12 The jerk chicken cheesesteak had way too much pepper however the sauce had an interesting flavor to it but meat was tender and no gristle. I would have enjoyed more if there wasn’t so much pepper in it. $14 Overall the food had too many flavors going on at the same time but that’s just my own taste and was a little pricey for average size cheesesteaks. But I encourage people to try them to form their own opinion because the food was ok.

Hi I ordered a fish Po Boy sandwich and it was the worst fish wasn’t golden brown it was like it was microwave because the ends were hard. When I bit into the sandwich I had to pull with my hands to break the fish off.. I should’ve went back in there and got my money back. I won’t be back for that sandwich. I had the shrimp one that was my 1st one ever that was pretty good. But I’m good on the fish. And on top of that it came out in 5 minutes so I know it wasn’t fresh. Smh

The Stuffed Salmon is something else, my favorite . As a seafood lover its a joy to eat, the portions are great. It can last you two days as a lunch and dinner option. Tastes just as good as nee when reheated. All the sides are good options.
