A Detroit style Italian beef created by ‘The Bear’s’ Matty Matheson is now available this month | Eater Detroit

"A destination restaurant and winery opened in September 2023 in a renovated, century-old home near the founders’ 85-acre farm, which supplies grapes and produce for the operation. After bringing on Justin Tootla and Jennifer Jackson as consultants and then permanent chefs, the kitchen received a menu refresh emphasizing hyperlocal ingredients: a chopped salad built from the farm’s seasonal vegetables, burgers made exclusively with Leelanau County ingredients, and a crispy chicken schnitzel crowned with a creamy Caesar-style salad that has already attracted praise." - Serena Maria Daniels

The Best Dishes Eater Detroit Editors Ate in September, 2024 | Eater Detroit

"Equal parts farm, winery, and restaurant, the Suttons Bay tasting room opened in September 2023 and recently gained buzz after two Detroit chefs joined the team. A standout is a crispy chicken schnitzel inspired by a New York Prune-era preparation, topped with a towering, creamy Caesar created by one of the co-chefs (a self-described Caesar connoisseur). The chicken—sourced from a Traverse City purveyor—is soaked overnight in grass-fed, small‑herd buttermilk from Manistee County, breaded, fried, and finished with a shishito-based chile oil made from produce grown on the property; the Caesar is piled with parmesan, big cranks of black pepper, lemon, and crispy romaine from a local co-op. The emphasis on local ingredients and the busy patio suggest both visitors and locals are enthusiastic about the food." - Eater Staff

Best Places to Eat and Drink in Northern Michigan for Viewing Fall Leaves - Eater Detroit

"Also new on the scene is Gilcrest Farm Winery, which just opened a well-appointed Suttons Bay tasting room in August 2023. Oenophiles could take a page from the bachelorette types and build an entire trip around visiting Leelanau County’s best tasting rooms, but those sticking closest to M-22 should at least be sure to add this new entrant to their list of stops. Order the chardonnay flight, where you can taste one of “the big six” three different ways — oaked, unoaked, and sparkling." - Stacey Brugeman

If we could rate this place any higher than a 10, we absolutely would. We called ahead and the staff was kind enough to allow us to sit outside with our pup, who they treated so graciously bringing her water. Loved all the beverages options as well as classic brunch drinks like mimosas and drip coffee. This is a small and rotating menu and we loved everything we had and ate every last bite. I would have licked the bowl for every last taste of the Juevos rancheros had we not been in public. Don’t you dare skip this place when you are in Leelenau County! Can’t wait to go back for some of their special events. Thank you Gilchrist staff, for your hospitality and dedication to your craft!

We so enjoyed our afternoon lunch here. Such a great farm to table experience and the staff was so helpful! We loved the wine, took a few bottles home, and oh that celery salad. YUM. Will look forward to recreating. Oops and the Rhubarb Ice Cream stole my heart!

Amazing dinner. Beautiful space. I love a simple menu. Everything was seasoned perfectly. You could feel the service was stretched to its limits though. The lady hosting was serving all the tables too and she did a great job managing a whole restaurant. SO to her

As a local, we’ve enjoyed both brunch and lunch here. This was our first visit for restaurant week and each option was outstanding. We enjoyed the wine pairings that went with each option. Highly recommend this hidden gem with its unique farm to table flavors.

I came here for dinner during a girls weekend & all of our food was delicious! We all had a wine flight, a delicious cheese plate, & I had the burger for my entree. It was, hands down, one of the best burgers I’ve ever had! It was juicy, but not greasy & I finished it all! The only part of our meal that was disappointing was the chocolate cake. It was too dry for our liking. Overall, great service & delicious food.

Google
We stopped in this weekend for a wine tasting. We had both a red and a white flight. We loved all six of the wines we tasted! Sitting by the cozy fire on a snowy afternoon was delightful. We’ll be back!

Google
We stopped in to try the desserts🍨 as it was on the main street, and we needed energy after 🛍. Wow, we know where we are going back to. The sorbet was unique in flavor with an exceptional flavor, and the cheese cake and plum tart had the European look and taste. It looked so good when served, I forgot to take the pictures. We started eating before I realized it. So you are seeing only a portion of the plates. I would recommend a visit.

Yelp
Cozy little restaurant with the friendliest staff. The menu is seasonal and we were lucky the day we stopped they had made a pot of the most delicious harvest soup (I can't remember the name) but all the flavors complimented themselves perfectly along with the salad we had. Their ingredients are sourced locally and organically, it was such a treat enjoying this wonderful lunch by their fireplace.

Yelp
Had a solo res on a Saturday evening. I was quickly greeted and sat down. Very open and inviting indoor seating area. I ordered the crispy rice. Each bit was def crispy and full of flavor. The under carriage had what tasted like a hummus and was also full of flavor. Great complement to the curry rice. The only bummer was no dessert. Would recommend getting a reservation especially if you appreciate farm to table as much as I do!

Yelp
Beautiful place. The staff was friendly, the owners not so much. The food was mediocre at best. Wine was not good. I know Michigan wines have come a long way, and whites are typically better than reds in the region. However, there was not one wine we could find worthy enough to drink a full glass. Overall, for the price, there are better options in the area. Overpriced for what you get.

Yelp
We recently visited Gilchrist Farms for the first time to have brunch. We were super impressed with the beautiful dining rooms, excellent service and absolutely delicious food. I used to have a favorite brunch spot we visited whenever we came up to visit the Traverse city area, but Gilchrist Farms blew that restaurant away. I love that they take reservations, so you don't have to wait around to get a table. Their menu may not be huge, but everything on it looks amazing. My husband & I shared the fried chicken biscuit and the farm plate and we loved them both. My only complaint is that they don't offer brunch more days, so we can eat their more often. Next time we are in town, we'll try their lunch or dinner as well!

Yelp
High quality food and drink in a beautifully renovated building. Presentation and service were both very professional.

Yelp
My foodie friend and I have our faves, but we enjoy trying new places, too. This place was new to us. My friend tried the pork on chips. I had the chive pancakes. Pricey, but decent portions (sharing sized) and farm to table quality. It's quite nice inside. Service- good, good.

Yelp
We thought we would be hungry with the small plates but they were outstanding. We split several between 3 of us along with wine flights and our favorite was the margarita slushies!!

Yelp
Food is really good and the owners strive to go above and beyond to make your farm to table experience excellent !

Yelp
We went here on a Monday evening and it was great! The meals are all made from scratch. I enjoyed a nice Chardonnay Mule, and the dinner was a pasta dish. Also had some special popcorn I cannot recall the name of. Recommended!

Yelp
1st experience was fine great fish chowder. Second experience, sadly, was not so good. The sourdough bread "toast" with fetta and brown butter was good, although more like a pancake than any crostini "toast". Italian recipe used for mafaldine had so much pepper and peppercorn it was all we tasted. The "lasagna" was not really an Italian dish, it was cumin based, hardly an Italian herb and one certainly not used for "lasagna" and, again way to much cumin, more like Indian cuisine meets pasta noodles, the pasta was not at all what would be expected. I like spicy food, my wife not as much, however we weren't going for spicy, we were both going for Italian. Advertise the "lasagna" instead as some type of Indian dish, and practice making a better mafaldine, in general don't over spice. Also food was overpriced.

Yelp
We dined in for their Sunday Brunch and it was lights out. Their beignets were off the charts and had a few sauces that were great. Their breakfast sandwich was the best I've had maybe in my entire life. Their eggs are good quality, probably from a local farm. I can't wait to try lunch or dinner.

Yelp
I've been twice for dinner, both a few months apart so I was able to experience totally different seasonal menus. Every dish has been delicious and the wines are fantastic as well!!! I will continue coming back and recommending to anyone in the area!

Kelly M.

Yelp
Jen and Justin have done a fantastic job with the menu here, you MUST try the burger. It's undescribable, just get it and enjoy! The wine is delicious too and I always try their fun wine cocktails.

Yelp
Food is excellent. We had the potatoes that were cheesy and wonderful. The pasta was homemade and very nicely prepared with a light tomato sauce. Sounds basic but it wasn't. Also wonderful. We also had the chive pancake and the grilled cheese. Both were great. Nice char on the artisan bread and rackets cheese. Yum. The wine flight was great too. We left with four bottles! Lastly, Erin was a great server. Friendly, attentive and informative. What more could we ask for? All around great food, wine and service. 10/10.

Yelp
Food and wine were excellent. Unfortunately all meals didn't arrive at the same time and three of us were almost done with our meals when the fourth individual was served. Definitely need to work on that aspect of their service.
