I visited Gilly's Rooftop Bar in Detroit expecting a chill night out, but instead, I got interrogated like I crashed a private party. After being seated by a staff member--without a reservation, mind you--I ordered a drink and two tacos. Suddenly, a waiter and the manager, Zach, started grilling me about who sat me and why I was there, despite five or more tables sitting empty. The vibe turned hostile fast, with them demanding I leave within 30 minutes, then an hour, for no clear reason. It felt like they profiled me for looking young, especially after checking my ID three times despite the bouncer's check. No signs indicated I needed to wait for a host, and the staff's lack of training was glaring. I stayed calm, offered to take my food to go at a discount, but their relentless haggling made me uncomfortable enough to leave. When Zach escorted me out, it felt like a security guard was hauling me off for a fake ID, with people staring and wondering what I did wrong--utterly humiliating. Zach comped my food and a drink, but that didn't erase the unprofessional treatment or the awkward interrogation of the hostess in front of me. With so many open tables, this was a shameful way to treat a customer. Train your staff better or put up a sign--don't make guests feel like intruders.
