Khao soi is Ginger & Scallion's sole dish, and that's good enough - Review - Seattle - The Infatuation

"After serving only Hainan chicken rice when it first opened, Ginger & Scallion abruptly pivoted to a khao soi restaurant. Having a strong hankering for said noodle soup is a prerequisite for enjoying a meal here, but if anything’s going to get us in the mood, it’s this place. The coconut broth is comforting, pickled mustard greens add a tart bite, and proteins are cooked well, be it sliced seared duck or earthy braised lamb. Though in truth we miss the chicken, the bare-bones Phinney Ridge spot with just a handful of tables is still a solid lunch or casual weeknight dinner option in its latest form. Food Rundown Seared Duck Khao Soi Our favorite of the bunch. The duck is seared with robot levels of precision, with spiced edges and a soft pink middle. Each slice tastes particularly good submerged in creamy curry. photo credit: Makena Yee Lamb Leg Khao Soi Same exact bowl, only the duck gets Ctrl+Alt+Deleted in favor of braised lamb. The meat's a little bit on the dry side, but tastes great, so let it soak in the sauce for a moment before diving in. photo credit: Makena Yee" - Aimee Rizzo

The Best Things Eater’s Seattle Editor Ate in January | Eater Seattle

"In that weird little neighborhood between Phinney Ridge and Ballard, this barebones restaurant — which last year got a ton of attention for making basically one dish, Hainanese chicken rice, and knocking it out of the park — has pivoted to the Thai noodle soup Khao Soi, and whaddya know, it’s another home run. The creamy broth is “aromatic from cumin” and just the thing for “white-knuckle winter days.” A lime garnish adds a hint of acidity, and you can pick from several meat options; the lamb was “tender but not too fall-y-apart-y.” When people talk about “comfort food,” this is it." - Harry Cheadle

The Seattle Restaurant Week Menus We Actually Think Are Worth It

"The Deal: $20 Lunch, $20 Dinner (Daily) We love this Phinney Ridge spot for drowning out the day’s noise with Hainanese chicken rice. Since one plate of poultry will run you between $16 and $24 on a regular night, the value of Ginger & Scallion’s Restaurant Week menu will be determined by whether they decide to serve the pricier chicken. Let’s hope for the rice wine-seeped dark meat. " - kayla sager riley, aimee rizzo

Google
This place has been on my bookmarks ever since they were serving chicken rice, and now that they specialize in Khao Soi, I finally stopped by. Absolutely worth it! The space is small, intimate, and fills up quickly during peak hours, so plan accordingly. They offer amazing Khao Soi options like wagyu, seared duck, goat, braised beef, oxtail, and lamb leg. We ordered the wagyu and seared duck, and both were outstanding. The meat was incredibly tender and melted in your mouth. The broth was rich and flavorful, perfectly balanced by the pickled mustard greens and a squeeze of lime. The crispy wonton on top added a great crunch. Overall, a fantastic spot for Khao Soi lovers! can’t wait to come back and try the other proteins! The owner also manages another restaurant nearby, Secret Congee in the Ballard area. Highly recommend checking that place too!

Google
Comforting bowl of Khao Soi! They have different protein options to pick from. I loved the meat on the oxtail so tender! The a5 wagyu special and duck were juicy. Add some of their chili oil for some heat 🤤

You know a place is going to be good when there is only one dish on the menu, and the beef tenderloin khao soi was incredible. Probably the best I have ever had. The flavors were rich, balanced, and deeply satisfying. You order through a QR code, which was a little tricky since the WiFi and cell service were spotty, but once that was sorted out, everything went smoothly. The staff were friendly and welcoming, and the vibe was simple and unpretentious. It is all about the food here. Definitely worth a visit.

If you’re on the hunt for the best khao soi in Seattle, Ginger & Scallion absolutely deserves to be at the top of your list. I say this as someone who doesn’t even like curry. Usually, curry-based dishes feel too rich, too heavy, or too uniform in flavor for me. But the curry broth at Ginger & Scallion is in a league of its own. Their khao soi broth is incredibly aromatic—rich and creamy but never cloying, with layers of spice that feel warm rather than overpowering. It has this depth that builds as you eat, hitting that rare sweet spot between comfort food and something genuinely exciting. It’s the kind of broth that makes you pause for a second just to appreciate how good it is. And then there’s the mustard pickle. This might actually be the secret weapon of the entire dish. The tangy, slightly sharp brightness of the pickle cuts through the richness of the curry in the most satisfying way. Instead of fighting for attention, the flavors work together perfectly, adding contrast and bringing out the best qualities in each other. Every spoonful ends up being balanced—creamy, tangy, warm, and refreshing all at once. The noodles are always cooked just right, with that ideal chew, and the toppings add texture without distraction. But really, it’s the broth-and-pickle combo that makes this bowl unforgettable. I’ve gone from someone who avoids curry to someone who would happily cross the city just for this. Our group ordered three different versions: • Nagano Wagyu A5 Picanha Khao Soi • American Wagyu Flank Steak Khao Soi • Seared Duck Khao Soi And every single protein was outstanding. The meats were all perfectly marinated and incredibly tender—easily some of the best-prepared proteins I’ve had in a noodle dish. The wagyu cuts were buttery and flavorful without being overly fatty, soaking up the curry broth just enough to enhance their natural richness. The seared duck was beautifully cooked, with that ideal tender bite that stands up well to the bold broth. If you already love khao soi, you’ll be impressed. If you think you don’t like curry, this bowl might change your mind. Ginger & Scallion has created something truly special, and it’s easily one of the most satisfying dishes you’ll find in Seattle.

Google
I got the duck as my choice of protein, would highly recommend. A great portion, tender and juicy without any gameyness. Try the chili oil at your table to adjust to your spice level and pair it all with a Thai iced tea. Best way to cure your winter depression. (I don’t like the crispy noodles so I got them on the side)

Google
This place is excellent. The noodles, the broth, the proteins, the accoutrements—-all were perfectly executed! The broth is so well balanced that I had no problems drinking it and ordering more! I really appreciate these specialty restaurants that have small set menus with little room for customization. They make what they make and they make it well. If you’re extra hungry, grab another side of noodles at the end to mix with any leftover broth. Khan soi is hard to find in the U.S. and this place makes it with such love.

Google
What a lovely spot! I stopped in for a solo dinner and was charmed. The staff was very welcoming and helpful. The broth was thick and delicious. The broth is not particularly spicy, so if you're looking for heat just add the chili oil they provide - it really elevates the flavors. I ordered the duck and was very impressed by the quality. For those complaining about the price - not all Thai food can or should be cheap! These chefs are giving you a specific experience, and it's well-worth the price point. My dish was one of the more expensive options and I have no regrets. Definitely stop by if you're in the area. I know I will!

Google
Lovely khao soi spot only- excellent options for meat eaters and vegetarian/ vegan. They used to have a larger menu but are now more focused. We got the tofu khao soi and the braised beef. The tofu was a 5/5 and came with the alternate noodle. I would have preferred the egg noodle on this one to stay closer to a true khao soi. But still very good- great balance of spice and flavor. Also no powdery taste of powder that you sometimes get in other restaurants. The braised beef had a good amount of meat and very tender good quality meat. Would have liked more pickled veggies to add to it and a little more spice. Both of these are easy fixes with additional condiments- if available. Was hard to request options as you order through a QR code at your table so customization of a different noodle . However the staff is so friendly- i am sure they would have accommodated it if we had asked. Quick friendly service and order was nice and hot when it arrived too. Would visit again and decent price point for lunch or dinner. Laidback atmosphere and lots of folks doing takeaways when we were there.

Yelp
I'd like to proclaim that I'm somewhat an expert in eating hainamese chicken and chicken rice. I've grown up eating it, and have eaten it around the world. There's a threshold of flavor that you need to hit with the rice, as well as moistness and tenderness of the chicken without compromising flavor. I was a bit doubtful going into ginger & scallion. Usually they would do one well, and not the other, or they would just miss both by a smidge. Luckily this was not their case with the Singaporean Style Hainamese chicken. Great flavor in chicken, which was elevated even more with their sauce. The chicken rice stands well on its own, so you know that it's done right. we also tried the duck. It was good, but not as amazing as their Singaporean hainamese chicken. I'm glad I tried both, but will only stick with the chicken next time. Possibly try their Bah Ku teh. This south East Asian gravitates to flavor, and G&S has delivered it well. Service was quick, attentive, and friendly. I was a bit confused at first on what chicken to try, and they too agree that their Singaporean style was hands down the winner to pick. I'm glad I listened. Place is hole in the wall feeling, but clean. Everything you need. Parking is just a tad bit difficult, so we came during off peak, and was able to snag street parking easily. It's super dark outside tho, so be careful. Also no large signs, so you gotta follow that gps! But super glad that I found a winner winner, Singaporean style hainamese chicken dinner!

Yelp
Love the ambiance of this place. Open kitchen, but not too loud. Excellent attentive service. Chicken and rice was well seasoned and moist. The table side sauces were excellent. Will be back!

Yelp
Classic Style Hainanese Chicken & Rice: The chicken was very tender and the rice was delicious! It tasted great with their ginger & scallion sauce. The broth was pretty good too, but it's a bit heavy on the pepper for me. They provide 4 different sauces for your meal. They were ginger & scallion, sweet soy, and 2 other sauces the waiter warned us were spicy. The interior of the restaurant had a rustic vibe and there didn't seem to be too many tables inside. The staff were attentive and nice.

Yelp
Falls squarely into the "I could have made this at home" category. I recently had the pleasure of trying Ginger & Scallion, and while the food was undeniably delicious, the price... was not. The flavors were spot-on, and drunken chicken was seasoned perfectly. The service was fine and atmosphere squarely Seattle-average. However, the portion size was quite tiny. Or maybe the price was just way too high. For $25 pre-tax, I could buy 5 whole chickens at Costco (or even Whole Foods!), whereas here, I only got maybe 1/4 of a chicken. I think if you don't own a steamer or have an aversion to cooking rice with simple chicken stock, go ahead and come here. But otherwise, just make it at home: 1) Buy rotisserie chicken at Costco 2) Wash and rice 3) Pour chicken stock in rice 4) Steam rice 5) Assemble and enjoy

Yelp
This place is seriously addicting. I usually get the bbq chicken. I find that I enjoy the additional flavor the spices add to the chicken and I enjoy the way that it is prepared more than the other chickens. But I think the highlight of the food at this restaurant is their chicken rice. The first time I had their chicken rice, I was delighted at how flavorful each bite was. Combined with their signature ginger scallion sauce, the rice could be a meal on its own. The richness of the rice and the warm broth makes it a really nice meal for a cold day. The only reason I don't come here more often is that the price does feel a little steep. But I will visit again when I feel like treating myself.

Yelp
I love places that are solid when I have it the first time around and remain that way when I come back after an extended period of time; this place is one of them! I came here during a Saturday night around 6:30pm with a friend and had to wait about 10 or so minutes for their limited seating to open up. There's several tables that don't really accommodate big parties, and bar seating which is where my friend and I sat. The menu provided at the front differs from the one that was handed to us at the counter but they both (along with our servers) advertised their Hainanese chicken dishes real hard. That is exactly what I came for! We got the braised duck and rice, and the Singaporean style Hainanese fried chicken, and this sets a really high bar for other places that do similar dishes! My favorite ended up being the braised duck because it was so versatile; you could either eat the duck meat on its own (it was sooooooo well seasoned and taste was on point) or pour some of its sauce in the white rice provided. The Hainanese chicken was just as great in its own way; the pieces are sliced thinly but there's just enough taste in it that you'll wanna come back for more! You can taste the garlic in both the chicken and the provided rice as well. We ended up also getting Mary's chips, which were essentially crispy chicken skin chips. These took a while to come out but it came out hot and crunchy and ended the meal very well. Extremely high recommend given its taste and quality has not changed since coming here when it opened!

Yelp
Solid flavors with good portions. I could even eat the rice and soup alone.. perfect for a cold rainy day!

Yelp
We have been wanting to try this place for awhile after it initially opened! We came for an early dinner (5:30pm) without a wait. Service was quick and our food came minutes after ordering along with an assortment of sauces (the house ginger and scallion sauce was our fav!). The classic chicken rice was juicy and tender, paired obviously really well with the ginger and scallion sauce. Some parts of the chicken were a little dry but the succulent skin made up for it. The five spice braised duck was cooked perfectly. The sauce from this dish over the rice was a great combo. Don't give me wrong, the food was yummy but had to take one star off for pricing! Even though portions were appropriate, we can't help feeling that for the price, we wanted to be more amazed. Food was homey and filling with chill ambiance!

Yelp
I was so excited to try this place out when it popped up on my feed because my cousin and I love hainanese chicken as well as supporting fellow Asian American businesses, but truthfully we did not enjoy our meal. The representation was not seen when we went inside. There isn't a parking lot nearby, and the streets nearby were full so we had to drive up a bit into a neighborhood. Finding the restaurant was confusing at first because there's not sign on the storefront. It's a very small restaurant, so it was already pretty full and has super bright light. The noise level is average, not too loud but you can definitely hear those around you since you're so close together. Ordering is pretty simple because the host was our server and the menu is concise. Our food was dropped off quick, but the rest of the service was mediocre. cucumber salad: was not pickled as expected and lacked the rice vinegar flavor as a whole. I could see the sesame oil, but barely tasted it as it just tasted like raw cucumbers were cut and fresh placed atop. It was crunchy, but didn't taste properly prepped. classic chicken & rice: chicken resembled proper hainanese chicken and was juicy, but again is hard to mess up. The rice however was insanely salty and the soup if we can even call it that was plain. It actually tasted like water and was pale with a singular silver of green onion as garnish. five-spiced braised tofu: the fact that it was was served cold threw me so off and the tofu texture was also unexpected for me. It had an exterior that was dry and spongy, but the inside was still semi-firm. the sauce itself just tasted like star anise and soy sauce then was filled with a significant amount of gogi berries. thankfully the fluffy rice was apart of the meal and was hot though that was the only saving grace. Neither my cousin nor I liked our dish at all. We didn't finish the entrees and didn't want the left overs. There are complimentary sauce jars that come to the table and those made my meal edible. I liked the ginger and spice seasonings provided to elevate the profile of the entrees. Overall though I felt the prices were expensive for not only the portion, but simply because I didn't feel it tasted good enough. There was no fish sauce for my cousin to dip her chicken when asked either which is what we're used to. I wouldn't recommend this as a spot to return or say it's authentic.

Yelp
Visit Ginger & Scallion if you're looking for comforting chicken and rice - all their dishes that we sampled were delicious and flavorful, cooked with particular care and tenacity. The service was average, though to be expected with a casual spot like this one. It was also unfortunately very warm during our visit, which made our experience a bit less enjoyable especially considering there was an AC unit inside. Nonetheless, the food met my expectations; the Thai tea tres leches was good, though nothing special. I'd take one star off for the price - despite these being high quality and flavorful dishes, they were quite pricey for what they were.

Yelp
Super delicious and authentic Hainanese chicken rice and Teochew dishes. Seattle is missing out on wonderful Teochew dishes as most Chinese food are either Szechuan or Hunanese. Even Cantonese restaurants are getting rarer nowadays. The chicken rice is the best yet in the Seattle area. Super moist, soft, and fragrant. I would recommend the Singapore-style to the Classic. The duck was full of the fragrance of 5 spiced. The chicken skins (Mary's chips) are crispy and delicious. The Pandan Matcha Tiramisu could be a bit bolder with the pandan but still good dessert to close the meal. Service was friendly and attentive. The building feels old, and the table probably could be coated so it won't absorb liquid, making the impression of dirty. Otherwise, it was an awesome experience.

Yelp
Highlights: - Really suffers from Seattle restaurant syndrome* - Beware if you don't like food smells, as there is some really pungent ingredient they use (which, like, I can't recognize what it is with regard to anything on their menu besides the weird broth they serve) - Y'all the toilet was busted and they were asking you to reach into the toilet to pull the chain to flush it which like what is happening right now * Seattle Restaurant Syndrome - when portion sizes are just really not doing it for the cost while the quality is not high enough nor is the experience unique enough to justify the price I was really excited to see a Hainan-style chicken shop pop up so when I finally ended up in the area for lunch we decided to swing by and give it a try. We tried two of the chicken dishes as well as the duck. Everything was... really just ok. Even the ginger scallion mix was not that flavorful (maybe needed more salt? Or maybe it just wasn't fresh?) The interior of the restaurant is cute, but there is a smell that hangs over the entire place that I can't identify. Which, I can't imagine what it is or why it's necessary in any of the dishes on the menu. What really got me was needing to stop by the restroom, the toilet flushing mechanism wasn't working and a sign asked you to essentially pull the chain inside the tank to flush it. Which, yes, is how a toilet works, but when you're charging over $20 a dish you experience some real cognitive dissonance when you're reaching into a toilet tank. Please at least provide a string or something taped to the wall that people can tug instead!

Yelp
I came for lunch with a friend and had a nice time, but don't think I'll be running back. We both ordered their classic chicken and rice with breast meat. The rice was 10/10 but I think the chicken was a little dry and broth a bit bland. I enjoyed the dipping sauces but unfortunately had to rely on them for flavor. I understand it's a simple dish, but think they need to nail execution if it's all they do, and they fell a bit short for me - especially for the price.

Yelp
Delicious food and even better service!! The staff and owners of this restaurant are so incredibly friendly and welcoming. The space is very cozy and inviting, with constant customer traffic that adds to the lively ambience. I tried a variety of dishes, but I HAVE to spotlight the Thai tea tres leches which was arguably one of my favorite desserts in the Seattle area. As a baker myself, I am quite picky, but this dessert is quite commendable because it ticks my 3 personal boxes of criteria for a stellar dessert: 1) perfect level of sweetness 2) moist (soaked in the Thai tea helps makes this a no brainer) 3) unique! I'm Indian, and love concocting fusion desserts (funny enough, my Ramsalai tres leches is one of my top 3 most popular desserts). This tres leches balanced all the flavors and textures seamlessly. All in all, highly recommend a visit here if you want a taste of authentic Thai food & an incredible dessert!

Yelp
Overall a decent place- They specialize in Asian style chicken and duck. We tried the Drunken Chicken and Braised Duck. Both were flavorful and tender but a pretty small portion for $20+ dishes. The rice was just okay and the broth lacked flavor. I did enjoy all the sauces that come with it on the side: sweet soy sauce, thai chili, ginger and scallion sauce. The desserts were good but also small portion for $6-9.

Yelp
Came in around 2pm on a Saturday and was seated immediately. There is street parking available. I ordered the drunken chicken. The broth was honestly a miss for me. It was too peppery for me. The chicken itself was good. I personally likes the thai chili sauce the best out of the four options. The rice was super flavorful. Nothing amazing about the place, but a staple place for some chicken and rice if you're craving it.

Yelp
Fantastic experience with Ginger & Scallion with my wife and daughter. The Singaporean chicken was sooo good and tender, super flavorful and delicious. My daughter loved the classic chicken plate, the rice was very flavorful as well. Mary's chips was something new to me, never had chicken fried skin before but it was a complementing appetizer to pair with the entrees

Yelp
Honestly this place is not bad. But it's also not amazing. I used to like it a lot but have had some mishaps lately. The thing that is really great about this place is it's sauce. The ginger scallion sauce is literally addicting and delicious. But everything else is mediocre. Soup just taste like white pepper. -1 i had asked for white meat and they accidentally gave me dark. They also messed up my husbands order but he was fine with it. They don't have that many workers so one server and one chef can be overwhelming to run the whole restaurant. They were kind to admit their mistakes. -1 pandan matcha dessert. I was looking for creamy and full of moisture. But the cake was dry and the pandan cream wasn't light and fluffy. Nothing special about it.

Yelp
I'm a huge fan of chicken and rice so ginger and scallion has been on my to try list for super long. I came in right after a workday and was sat down right away. The restaurant was small but had plenty of seating. I got a drunken chicken plate with white meat which came with a bowl of rice and a clear broth. - The chicken: it was good, but wasn't as fragrant as I would have liked it. - The rice: soo flavorful. This rice was so delicious and umami. - The broth: this one was a bit of a let down. There was too much white pepper and it was all I could taste unfortunately. There was also a variety of sauces at the table to dip the chicken in. My favorite by far was the ginger and scallion. Probably one of my favorite parts of the meal honestly. Overall, the meal was just ok. I would give 3.5 stars if I could. I'll definitely consider coming back and trying the dark meat or a different chicken dish.

Yelp
Ginger & Scallion is an amazing place for chicken rice, brought to you by the team behind Secret Congee! This is some of the best chicken rice I've ever had. The chicken is tender and juicy, pairs great with any of their four sauces. My favorite chicken variations are probably the drunken chicken and Singaporean which are both served cold. I also appreciate the ability to pick between dark meat (the better meat) and white meat. Each chicken dish is served with an incredibly flavorful rice and a soothing broth. Their Thai tea tres leches was also pretty good, although not the strongest tea flavor. The place itself is relatively small. We came at around 11 am on a Sunday and it wasn't too busy. Only street parking available so it can potentially be tricky but we were able to find a spot right in front pretty easily.

So so good we got duck and chicken and the chicken skin that was actually the winner!!!

Yelp
Not sure if Ginger & Scallion is still in its soft opening phase, but I highly recommend it to satisfy your Hainanese chicken & rice craving! Start off with some apps - fried chicken skin, cucumber salad, and shishito peppers are the ones they had when I was there. I really enjoyed the fried chicken skins, and would like to see it as a main entree next time (maybe with rice - hint hint). With any Hainanese chicken & rice dish, you'll need the classic sauces and Ginger & Scallion does not disappoint. Try all 4 of their sauces. One of them I haven't seen before, but is fish sauce-based and I suspect has a hint of tamarind and/or palm sugar. For mains, we tried the classic, curry, BBQ, and drunken chicken. They all have their own character, and certain ones pair well with the sauces while others are better by themselves. Regardless, the chicken are all cooked and seasoned well. I'm a big fan of the drunken chicken! Rice needs a mention - it was fragrant and prepared with aromatics so you know it is legit! Also appreciated the balancing broth that came with a subtle white pepper flavor. Finally, we finished off with the matcha cheesecake. Tasted less dense and with more gelatin-like texture, but the matcha maintained its earthy flavor. Well done. I look forward to see more desserts next time *another hint hint* Thank you for having us, Boss! As Arnold's Terminator says, I'll be back. Yelp
Came to the soft opening and we had the duck & drunken chicken dishes and both were really solid choices. I would highly recommend the duck dish as it's heavy with five spice char flavor while being moist and succulent! The drunken chicken was a nice cold poached peppery dish which was good to contrast the duck dish. We wish both dishes came with the same flavored chicken rice but the duck comes with just plain rice. All the restaurant made sauces to dip/ spoon over the proteins were so good. My only gripe with the meal was that the soup was not good at all-- lacked chicken flavor and just tasted like peppery water. Service is kind of scrambled and figuring things out but overall nice people. We also shared the wings (not pictured) which was alright it's a drum and a wing in one but needs more salt and kind of small. Wanted to try the passionfruit pie but it was out so we got the matcha tiramisu which was bland so not recommended however the thai tea cake was great.

Yelp
2nd time I'm here. Bought the wife and she loves it! She's a picky one. One of the best meals we had in a while. We ordered the Singapore Chicken, the Drunken Chicken, and Satoshi pepper for app. The combination of their sauces was quite elevating. Even their rice was yummy. Highly recommended.

Yelp
After seeing much hype from IG stories and post, a couple of my friends and I decided to swing by here for a late dinner. Came here around 8pm and even then, this place was super packed with people. Overall, if you're craving a classic Hainanese style chicken rice, this is a pretty solid stop. Things to note: Parking: Street only Price: Definitely a bit more pricier than anticipated. Quantity of food is more individual vs sharing but quality of the taste was worth it. Food: Overall, pretty tasty! 1. Classic Chicken Rice w/ Dark Meat ~ Rice was good with the infused chicken flavor and chicken was soft and moist 2. Drunken Chicken Rice w/ Dark Meat ~ Tasted very similar to the Classic Chicken with the exception of some extra spices 3. Curry Chicken ~ Tasted ok...I do like the crunchy onion flakes on the curry. Compared to the chicken rice dishes, this one wasn't as memorable. 4. Fried Chicken Skin ~ quite tasty! Took a bit of time to come out but was worth the wait 5. Peppers~ Despite our group asking about our appetizer order of the peppers a few times, we never got any closure from the staff on why this wasn't served. 6. Sauces: To enhance your meal, I highly recommend trying out the homemade sauces! :) Adds a nice kick to the chicken with the various spicy and savory taste. Service~ Friendly staff I'll give this place another shot next time to hopefully try out the Thai tea with coconut cream (which was unfortunately sold out during my visit)

Yelp
Came here on Friday at 7 PM and sat at the bar with no wait! It's a small, cozy restaurant that had a welcoming vibe with an open kitchen. Because we sat at the bar, we could observe the kitchen pretty closely - we were surprised by how attentive and careful the workers at the kitchen were! We saw this worker meticulously inspecting and washing all the herbs for the entire time we were there The service was great - our server was kind and gave some good recommendations and explained the house made sauces. We ordered classic chicken with dark meat and bbq grilled chicken breast and cucumber salad. Both of the chicken dishes were very good! I was super impressed by how tender and moist chicken breast was for the bbq chicken. I also really liked the spiced seasoning on the bbq chicken. The rice was also really flavorful! All of their house sauces were delicious - I especially liked the ginger and scallion one (that is the name of this place haha). I would give this place a 5 stars if it weren't for the price. For over $20 per dish, the portion isn't too big, especially the chicken. I wish they gave a bit more chicken. Also the cucumber salad is just cucumber with vinegar and sesame oil and it's $8. But I would still return for some great chicken!

Yelp
Came here for lunch after hearing the hype! Service was excellent and friendly and they explained what was in all four of the delicious sauces! We were served fairly quickly too. The ambiance is unassuming for the most part and seating is a bit limited. The food was tasty - the drunken chicken was great and a nice texture. I would have to say the rice and the ginger scallion sauce was the best part! We were also given a warm, refreshing broth that was evenly spiced which went well with the meal!

Yelp
I'd have to give it to the restaurant, they have very good Hainanese chicken rice. It's pricey at $21 for some medium portion, but where can you even find a good deal these days. I've been a fan of Hainanese chicken rice since I discovered it in a Thai restaurant in Kobe, Japan of all places. I've been on a hunt for a good place in the US for years. No restaurants in NYC couldn't surpass what I had in Kobe but Ginger & Scallion may be the first one to do so. I ordered takeout and it came with four types of sauce - I wasn't a fan of the sweet brown sauce, but I liked all three others - I thought the red one would be some regular sweet chili sauce, but it had a good kick to it and I enjoyed how spicy it was. The other two sauce was just plain amazing. Restaurant opened at 4 pm and we went around 4:20 pm at first. For the Hainanese chicken rice, you can pick either dark meat or breast. At that time, they didn't have dark meat option yet but it became available around 5 pm. My friend and I was all about dark meat so I had to come back later for that. Staff is friendly and the service was quick. I could actually imagine myself craving the chicken rice from here again. I'm happy that I got a chance to visit!

Yelp
They're the sister restaurant of Secret Congee! I'm pretty sure they're the only restaurant specializing in Hainan chicken rice in all of Seattle at the moment :) We tried all their soft-opening menu items: cucumber salad, curry style (chicken rice), classic style (chicken rice), drunken style (chicken rice) and they were all so good. The chicken were so tender & juicy and the rice is cooked to perfection. The staff are all so friendly! The restaurant is a spacious space with a warm & welcoming ambience :)

Yelp
Super solid spot for Hainanese Chicken Rice! The prices are, well, very Seattle, but I'm all for supporting local businesses. The broth was a bit bland but everything else was fire. The sauces are the showstoppers. Try experimenting with your favorite combination but man I could drink those straight from a bottle!

Yelp
Hainan chicken is one of my go-to dishes when I'm craving comfort food, so I'm so happy this new place opened up in Phinney Ridge. The cucumber salad is the perfect light appetizer while you wait for your main dishes. I got the Singaporean-style chicken and braised duck, which are both so juicy and tender and come with fragrant rice, warm broth, and yummy house-made sauces. Their matcha tiramisu and passion fruit pie (more like a cheesecake) are also so delicious and not too sweet just the way I like it. Best of all the staff are so attentive and friendly - thank you Boss, Angela, Katelyn, Nikky and the rest of the team for a wonderful dinner experience.

AND THEIR DESSERTS AHHHH you can never go wrong with thai tea tres leches! this is such a cute lil restaurant with cute decorations!

Yelp
Got here around 6:30 pm on a Monday and it was about half filled out. It's a very nice, well decorated restaurant. The service was very nice and friendly. The menu consists of mainly chicken rice dishes and a few other dishes as well. We decided to get one chicken and rice dish to try and then to try one of their other dishes as well, ended up getting the braised duck. I think for a place that specializes in chicken and rice with half of the dishes on the menu being about that, I expected a lot more from this spot. I honestly was disappointed in the chicken, and thought it should've been softer. I thought it was just mid at best. I did think the duck was pretty good though and it's one of the best duck I've had in Seattle but it's pretty pricy for the amount you get. Both dishes came out with rice and soups, I thought the rice was pretty good and flavorful and had that chicken flavoring. But the soup was just very weak and just had some white pepper or something thrown in it felt. We tried all of the sauces they had and we liked the ginger scallion sauce and the Singapore chili sauce, we did not like the sweet soy sauce that was wayyy too sweet or the other sauce. I don't think I'd go back. Duck - 8/10, good just pricey for what you get. Very soft Singapore chicken - 6/10: just ok honestly, not very soft Rice - 7/10 : good flavor Soup - 5/10 - weak flavor soup with just like white pepper or something thrown in

Yelp
From the team behind Secret Congee, this new spot in Seattle's Phinney Ridge neighborhood is serving up Hainanese chicken! I recently got a chance to check out their soft opening menu :) Featured dishes + Mary's chips: chicken skin with sea salt and sweet chili sauce (4/5) + Cucumber salad (4.5/5) + Classic (poached) style chicken (4.5/5) + Drunken style chicken (5/5) + Curry style chicken (5/5) Both the poached and drunken chicken are tender but light. I like that the skin is still on. The rice wine for the drunken chicken complements perfectly. I also really liked the curry style chicken, which is more Thai. The chicken skins are a nice appetizer and the cucumber salad is really refreshing. There's an open kitchen and the interior is warm with lots of natural light. Don't forget to try all their sauces too! Follow my Instagram and TikTok @thephotographerfoodie for more! :)

Yelp
Cute and small storefront in phinney ridge area serving hainan chicken rice. Opted for the classic so we could get a baseline of what the dish tasted like and it did not disappoint. You have a choice between breast and dark meat (and was told a combo mix of the 2 would be coming to the menu soon). Meat was super tender and it came with yummy, non oily, chicken broth cooked rice. The side of broth that it came with was a little white pepper heavy. Of the 4 sauces, all the homemade ones were the best. Highly recommend dousing your entire place with the ginger and scallion sauce. The sweet dark soy was our least favorite. Mary's chips were also a good starter for the table. Only caveat was the price. $20 for a plate of chicken and rice is a little steep, even for Seattle standards. Would still come back to try the other varieties of chicken though.

Yelp
Yelp review #1700! So how did Ginger & Scallion end up on my Yelp radar screen? I have to give credit for the compelling write ups and photos posted by fellow Yelp Elite Tyler who was FTR and Thao posting via IG. Many thanks for sharing the deets about the successful folks behind Secret Congee and their new venture. I'm always up for Thai, Hainin-style, Asian fusion inspired flavors! As I'm heading back on I-5N from Georgetown, it was fortuitous to detour and head west to that interesting stretch of retail, cafe, bar, and restaurant businesses on NW 65th called Stumbletown - kind of a meld of Phinney Ridge meets Ballard with decent street parking. I was able to get there by 4pm (1/14/24) and sit at the window two top. Pro tip - terrific vantage point for amazing sunsets! I always cut new spots a wide berth during soft openings. But from the welcoming service and food execution start to finish, you'd never think they were in soft opening mode. Granted with our recent arctic blast, it was exacerbated that the restaurant had no indoor heating. So the complimentary hot tea and hot flavorful broth that came with my entree was much needed! Hopefully that glitch will get resolved. In the meantime, I kept my scarf and coat on. I started with Mary's Chips ($8) served with sweet chili dipping sauce. It seems various Asian cuisines have their version of seasoned fried chicken skins. It took great restraint to not polish off the entire basket as I did not have breakfast or lunch either! Crispy, flavorful, and not greasy. The Homie ended up with half of it with his takeout entree. Shortly thereafter, my Classic entree ($21) was brought out. I decided to go basic and see how they do with Hainan style chicken or chicken rice. Nicely plated for presentation, and all the components worked together in harmony. Tasty hot broth that wasn't bland or overly salty. The cucumber slices, scallions, and cilantro added that punch of color, flavor, and texture. That chicken rice was spot on. But props to the perfectly poached chicken breast...tender, succulent and was amplified with the condiments provided. I added a drizzle of the sweet soy and a dollop of the ginger & scallion, there's also two kinds of chili sauce available too. Bright flavors that were truly delicious! The Curry entree ($16) was requested as takeout by The Homie. This was shredded chicken with curry, chili oil, and the requisite cucumber, scallions, and cilantro with the chicken rice. I opted to not bring home any broth. He ended up mixing it up like a bibimbop dish and deemed it also delicious. Guess next time, we'll have to try the third entree option, Drunken Chicken. While I was onsite, there was a steady stream of takeout. Lots of return customers familiar with Secret Congee, whether originally in Wallingford or current Ballard/Shilshoe location. Likewise, lots of curious neighborhood passersby checking it out. Solo, pairs, groups of families were dining onsite. Upbeat overhead music. Genuinely welcoming vibe. As I was wrapping up my initial visit, Wendy, another fellow Yelp Elite/IGer, showed up. As she was waiting for her takeout order, she was given kitchen access. I look forward to her spin on the restaurant based on her photos and onsite convos with the staff. The menu will be further expanded once they're beyond the soft opening phase. There's also no pre-orders currently, but onsite dining and takeout are available. Their liquor license is currently pending. Debit and credit card payment is preferred. I enjoy seeing another indie, family run business have a successful launch. I wish them all the best. Ginger & Scallion is definitely highly recommended!

Yelp
Really special new restaurant in Ballard's Stumbletown neighborhood. Ginger & Scallion was just opened by the team behind Secret Congee and they've done it again! They specialize in variations of Hainanese chicken rice and it is delicious! Even if you have not had Hainanese chicken rice before, the food is still feels familiar and comforting. The chef cares so much about his craft and it shows through in the food. We tried the Drunken Style and Curry Style chicken rices. Both are served with their signature chicken rice that is fragrant and flavorful and also a cup of broth that is light and aromatic. Perfect compliments to both styles of chicken. The drunken style is perfectly cooked sous vide. This option is a great base for their house made sauces which I could not get enough of. If they sold these sauces in bulk I would keep these on hand at all times in my house, they are so delicious. The curry style is shredded chicken with a flavorful curry. This style also includes a chili crisp which brings the heat level up. It's a perfect combination of flavor and texture. We also ordered the cucumber salad and crispy chicken skin chips. Both wonderful compliments to the chicken dishes to bring some crunchy textures and the cucumbers bring a refreshing component. Overall, Ginger & Scallion is an excellent restaurant that is bringing new flavors to the Ballard area.

Yelp
Let's get one thing straight: Ginger & Scallion knows it's flavors. But let's get another point straight through: damn, this place be pricey! So brace yourself...and your wallets. My wife and I came here after seeing this on social media, and we love a good Hainan Chicken dish. We kept our expectations low, especially knowing the championing Hainan chicken and rice dish from our friendly neighbors to the south (looking at you Portland), but we were excited nonetheless. We ordered: 2 orders of the Classic 1 Mary's Chips Ok, so the Mary's chips. Pretty disappointing, not going to lie. I need to remember that social media can be fake and some "food influencers" *gag* just put on a facade, but these were not very good. $8 for basically 5-6 pieces of crispy chicken skin? Definitely not worth it, and despite having a nice crisp, it tasted so...empty. Highway robbery, price-wise, for what you get - I won't recommend this. For the entrees: the rice was really good, with a hint of garlic and ginger intertwined with every bite. The soup was really refreshing, and the white pepper taste was very bountiful and good. Definitely great on a cold Seattle day. The chicken wasn't bad, and it was quite tender and juicy. My only qualm? The price: $21 for quite a small plate of food. Let's just say I finished my wife's rice and my entire dish, and I was still left quite hungry. Service was good, and this place has a lot of potential. But to pay over $50 for this amount of food just made me feel...disappointed. This feels like a soft opening, and I hope they continue to improve. But unless they change something, whether it be the price or the quantity, chances of me returning are quite slim.

Yelp
We came in for lunch. My boyfriend ordered Singaporean chicken and I had the classic Chicken and rice with dark meat. They have 4 dipping sauces placed in containers that are self serve. The chicken I had was more on the dry side for being dark meat. The chicken could've used more flavor. I noticed that the chicken wasn't boiled, but was sous vide. The rice was very bland. I tasted more salt than chicken in the rice. The soup that comes with it tasted like boiled water with very minimal chicken buillon added and a little salt. The food seemed overpriced for what is being served. Nong's Khao Man Gai in Portland will always be the go to spot. Excited to have a chicken and rice place up here just to be disappointed after eating. Lol. The staff seemed friendly. The lady who sat us down seemed a little off. People who work around food should not be constantly fiddling with their hair while serving food. And on top of that, she also spilled water on the table and got my bf's phone and seating area soaking wet. We will not be coming back here. 3 hour drive to Portland will always be worth it. If you like your food unseasoned, and are the type of person who thinks seasoned food as "salt and pepper", this place is for you

Yelp
We visited during their soft opening on a cold and dreary night and were warmly welcomed by the friendly staff and owners. Their offerings were limited, as they are completing training on their signature dishes, but we didn't let that deter our visit. We ordered the Hainanese chicken as well as the Curried chicken, both served with rice. The chicken was tender for both dishes and paired well with the various sauces. The rice has enough flavor to stand on its own. We left wanting more, which I think is a good sign! We were hoping to try Mary's Chips, but they were out during this visit. This is one of the downfalls of visiting during their soft opening! While they currently have a limited menu, they plan to add one new item each week. Thanks Marie for putting this on my radar!

Yelp
For some reasons, it's incredibly difficult to find a good chicken rice place in Seattle. To start with: if you're expecting Hainan chicken rice like in Singapore or Taiwan, this is not it. However, for Seattle, it's quite good but a bit expensive. We ordered the Classic and Drunken dark meat with rice. The rice was pretty good though I kinda wish it used better jasmine rice and had more fragrance. The classic chicken is probably a crowd pleaser, tender and neutral tasting that can take any sauce. The Drunken chicken is a bit more interesting but still delicious. That said the meat is a bit too soft for me; I don't think this is free range chicken with the more chewy texture like what you'd get in Asia. Both also included a small chicken broth, which is probably my least favorite. It's plain with only a bit of salt. The soup. at Isarn is better. I may suggest putting some winter melon in the broth for more texture. Okay now the sauces. First the sweet soy sauce has a funny aftertaste. I can't tell why but maybe it's from the bottle sauce not homemade sauce. Second the ginger scallion oil is good, bit too salty and a bit too smooth (I prefer a bit chunks of ginger). Third, the spicy sauce (red) has good heat. Last, the herb sauce (brown?) was introduced to us as the most spicy but to me it wasn't spicy lol. In fact I was a bit confused by what it's supposed to be lol.

Yelp
Nice to have a good chicken and rice spot in Seattle! I ordered the classic it was quite tasty. The broth was very flavorful which also carried to the rice. I've had other chicken and rice dishes before and the rice is not so flavorful. :( They also provide four different sauces with the meal, 3 of which are homemade - impressive! My favorite sauces were the tan/brown one and the sweet/spicy one. They said the tan/brown was the "hottest", but for me, it was quite mild. The place is great for families or if you're dining by yourself since there's bar seating too. The thai iced tea was tasty! I *think* coconut cream was added on top -yum! I was hoping to try the crispy chicken skin appetizer but that was no longer on the menu, it was replaced with shishito peppers. Matcha tiramisu was nice, not too sweet and had a great balance.

Yelp
Amazing chicken and rice! The flavor is great on both the chicken and rice, chicken isn't too dry, and the staff were super friendly and attentive. My eyes widened at how much umami there was in the chicken broth that comes with the dish. The place filled up quick for dinner!

Yelp
Ginger and Scallion in Seattle is a true hidden gem! I tried the classic chicken, and it was absolutely phenomenal. The sauce accompaniment took it to another level, perfectly complementing the tender and flavorful chicken. But the real surprise? That rice! It was so delicious, I could easily eat bowls of it on its own--fluffy, tasty, and perfectly cooked. While the cucumber appetizer could use a little tweaking, it didn't detract from the overall experience. The chicken and rice were the stars of the show, and they did not disappoint. The spot itself is small and cozy, making it a perfect place for a comforting and satisfying meal. I can't wait to go back!

Yelp
This is a very solid Hainanese chicken rice spot. I got the classic dark meat plate and they give a good amount rice. Chicken was tender. Rice had good chicken and onion flavor. The broth on the side was very peppery - a little unexpected but quite nice. As far as sauces, the ginger scallion sauce was my favorite. They also had a chili sauce, sweet soya sauce, and one other sauce although I forget what it was. We also had the "chips" which are fried chicken skins. Very crispy, but I think they can only fry one batch at a time so while our table ordered 2, they came out 5-10 minutes apart. It comes with a sweet chili sauce. Service was very friendly. I do wish they came by to refill water a little more frequently. They were also out of a few drinks and the tiramisu which was a little disappointing. The biggest con with this place is the cost. $24 for a plate of chicken rice was quite surprising, even for Seattle. All in all, this is a good chicken rice spot. I'm happy I tried it, although given the price, I'll probably stick to making my own at home.

Yelp
I think what makes this place good is their sauce. Without it, the chicken and rice and soup would be just bland. The ginger and scallion oil is legit. And the other sauces are not bad. Broth was eh. Chicken was not dry, and I liked the portion size. I'd be down again to get it again. Or try drunken maybe? But beware.. stomach kinda hurt afterwards
google avatar

Yelp
I visited on a Saturday afternoon and was seated immediately. I ordered the classic chicken and my friend ordered the drunken chicken. Our food came out quickly. The broth was light and very peppery. The classic chicken was your standard hainanese chicken rice dish. I tried all the 4 sauces and it was good and complimented the chicken. My friend liked her drunken chicken too. This was a pleasant experience, but nothing mind blowing or outstanding.

Yelp
Consistently good chicken rice. The sauces are what makes the meal so delicious. Our family loves eating in-person or getting takeout from here.

Yelp
Visited Ginger & Scallion with a friend today, and it's such a warm and welcoming restaurant! I hope more people come to support this spot with its delicious food, friendly staff, and clean, bright kitchen. Their specialty is Hainanese chicken rice, and the chicken is so tender with a delicate flavor. We loved the Singapore-style Hainanese chicken rice and their new bak kut teh. The pepper in the soup was memorable but didn't overpower its rich flavor--just the way I like it! Portions are perfect, especially for girls like us. We ate a lot in-store and even took some food to-go. Highly recommend!
