Gingergrass Mini Mart - Review - East Hollywood - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"Scoring a meal in a convenience store really amps up the whole "convenience" thing. Sometimes, that meal might be just a sad tuna sandwich, but other times, it's special enough to overshadow everything else. Gingergrass Mini Mart in East Hollywood falls into that coveted "special enough" category, with a creative Vietnamese menu that's one of the best quick lunch options in the area. photo credit: Jessie Clapp photo credit: Jessie Clapp photo credit: Jessie Clapp photo credit: Jessie Clapp photo credit: Jessie Clapp For context—this is the second location of the Silver Lake restaurant with the same name, but it offers a very different experience. There are three tables on the sidewalk for dine-in, but, as its name implies, this shop is a mini-mart: a small grab-and-go shop with a cold case and a handful of shelves lined with Asian drinks, condiments, and beef-flavored Cheetos. And while shopping for chili crisps and duck tongue-flavored Lays is definitely part of the fun, prioritize eating a full meal here. Gingergrass's cold case is stocked with pre-packaged salads and portable bites like ahi-tuna stuffed spring rolls with a side of basil aioli. Those are perfectly fine—especially if you're on a takeout mission—but we prefer the hot food. Don't worry too much about time, either, because the kitchen spits out orders quickly. In less than ten minutes, you're served thick, chewy dan dan noodles in a nutty, lemongrass-infused sauce with grilled minced pork that's charred around the edges. The juicy popcorn chicken comes coated in a thin but sturdy crust stained yellow from turmeric. Braised beef tacos on flaky parathas are brightened up with cilantro and pickled onion, and the sparkling umeboshi lemonade is so refreshingly tart it'll make your mouth pucker. After eating all of these intensely flavorful things within half an hour, the bar for any convenience store will be set unreasonably high. There might not be the paper towels or dish soap your apartment desperately needs, but you'll walk away from Gingergrass with something better: a unique, delicious meal served before your one-hour parking meter runs out. Food Rundown photo credit: Jessie Clapp Drinks Gingergrass Mini Mart wears a few hats, one of them being a cafe with a varied drinks menu. Options range from simple (a traditional Vietnamese coffee) to very busy (a nutty ube latte made with silky homemade coconut cream). Our favorite among them is the umeboshi lemonade. This zippy, brain-tingling drink is concentrated salted plum diluted with Topo Chico, lemon, and fragrant herbs. It's extremely difficult not to chug in seconds flat. photo credit: Jessie Clapp Turmeric Popcorn Chicken These little fried chicken bites are so juicy they taste like they soaked in a broth jacuzzi before diving into the fryer. The turmeric-infused dredging is super crunchy but not too thick to feel like a bready mouthful. Instead, the spiced crust is light, crackly, and melts away with the chicken juices. photo credit: Jessie Clapp Lemongrass Dan Dan Noodles This is the best dish on Gingergrass’s menu. The noodles are thick and chewy, and the creamy sauce clings onto them like a coat of paint. At first, you taste sweet peanuts, but then the lemongrass heat and punchy garlic chili oil come through to liven things up. photo credit: Jessie Clapp Paratha Tacos These flaky, buttery parathas are very good tortilla dupes, especially when some durability is needed. Both the fried chicken taco (made with a creamy slaw and the turmeric popcorn chicken) and the egg and tater tot taco are a bit heavy, but the braised beef taco is special. Tender beef cubes are packed with the taste of star anise, while green scallion and cilantro balance out the meat's fat in what feels like a nod to Taiwanese beef rolls (which we love)." - Sylvio Martins

22 Grocery Stores To Check Out When You’re Sick Of Ralphs - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"Gingergrass Mini Mart sells Asian snacks, coffees, and condiments, which, according to us, makes it a grocery store. But even if you could solely live off caffeine and spicy squid-flavored Lays—not recommended—Gingergrass is more than a one-stop-shop. This East Hollywood spot is where you go to switch up your Sunday night snack rotation with beef-flavored Cheetos, crab roe sunflower seeds, and sriracha-flavored chocolates. And once you’ve picked out what chips to munch on while binging Survivor, order a delicious, quick meal at the counter. Getting a bowl of spicy lemongrass dan dan noodles or a brisket banh mi in less than ten minutes is why we love coming here. " - Brant Cox, Sylvio Martins, Kat Hong

Google
Best ginger limeade I’ve had— so glad to have found this gem! This place is an AAPI/Vietnamese bodega that has a cute and handy assortment of AAPI snacks, trinkets, gifts, food, drinks, sauces, etc. They even have tiger balm! Their staff is really nice too, one of their staff members helped me choose between the salted plum lemonade and sparkling ginger limeade. The ginger limeade was awesome because the ginger perfectly balanced out the limeade and was super refreshing. Can’t wait to try out the noodles the next time I’m here!

This place is so cute and the food was so tasty. We had the curry noodles, miso mushroom noodles and popcorn chicken. The had a lot of snacks, salads and sides to go, I will be picking up items before heading off to Barnsdall, or on a hike.

Google
Cute little shop with an amazing menu. The food is fresh and seasonal. I can only vouch for the vegan items but the quality of these dishes leaves no doubt that everything on the menu is going to be great.

Yelp
Food 2/5: no seasonings, very blend, nothing extraordinary, below average... Not sure what happened here. Service 3/5: average not good not bad. Ambiance 2/5: a market yet has seatings. Small, not much space. I highly don't recommend.

Yelp
This was definitely a hidden gem that we stumbled upon for lunch right in the heart of Hollywood. I would definitely comeback here again as the service was friendly and exactly how it should be by the gentleman who took the time to explain the menu all with a smile on his face! It's really not just a mini mart they have food and tables or pick up your food and go! Epic tasting all around and highly recommend stopping by! The food was healthy, delicious and unique. I thought the ambiance of this place was refreshing, a delight and had a great presentation. I will be back!

Yelp
Right around the corner from me and behind the Scientology building, next to Square One you will find the Gingergrass Mini Mart. Now, since the pandemic, this tiny space has been a taco place, a samosa house, a fast food joint and at least a couple other things that I cannot remember. None of them have lasted for more than a few months. But then, Gingergrass opened. And, much to my surprise, it's still around six, seven months later. I was a little surprised at this fact, because, of all things one could place in this tiny space, Southeast Asian Mini-Mart would not have been on top of my list of possible local ventures. My neighborhood is being gentrified at a high speed (an art gallery, a vegan store AND restaurant and an expensive homewares stores in a single year: check, check, check and check.). While Thai town is just down the street, Little Saigon is behind the Orange Curtain...aka, quite a while away. And, yet, despite it's very short hours (11am-3pm most days), this place is apparently been quite successful. Inside you will find a large collection of pre-packaged Southeast Asian snacks and drinks and a menu of of freshly made Vietnamese snacks and beverages. The place is undeniably cute with a clean and fresh interior. I'll admit that I've only bought a small gift (some cute stationary) and chili sauce, but this place definitely warrants a closer look.

Yelp
Holy smokes! I stumbled on this new spot (roughly four months old according to the owner) and loved its clean aesthetic so I stopped to see if the menu had vegan items. It sure did. I bought these amazing brussels sprouts that were drenched in flavor and a very fulfilling rice bowl with jackfruit. I'm very picky about jackfruit but I took a chance and I'm glad I did. It was cooked well and was very filling. The owner and other employee were very friendly and helpful--answering questions I had about vegan options. I was informed that many of their market items are imported goods, fun finds you won't get a regular grocery store. This includes Pokémon-packaged goodies, unique flavored Lays, Hello Kitty ramen cups and so much more packed into this quaint little shop (yet doesn't feel cluttered at all). Run, don't walk, to check out this cute shop and order some yummy food! You can take it to go or sit outside. I'll definitely be going again so maybe I'll see you there!

Yelp
This mini mart is so cute! They sell a wide variety of snacks and drinks it almost feels like you are in a smaller version of HMART. They also have drinks, I've tried the ube vietnamese coffee and it was on the stronger side so I diluted it with some oatmilk at home. I've also tried their pandan matcha but I couldn't really taste the pandan, it just tasted like a matcha latté. I recommend visiting if you're waiting to eat at Saffy's or the Oyster place, a small business worth supporting.

Yo those paratha tacos are fire! So good. Fried chicken was my favorite. Can't wait to get more. Bravo

Yelp
Super cute, tiny little place is a combination grocery store/coffee shop with some food options as well. The theme is sort of pan-Asian with things like Vietnamese coffee, jars of chili crisp, and Pocky sticks. Grab a cute snack, drink, or cookbook from the very attractively merchandised retail area. Or, snag a tasty drink and a paratha fried chicken taco. All the foods have something a little out of the ordinary going on and I've enjoyed everything. The staff is also very friendly, bonus!

Yelp
Went in on a Sunday afternoon to this cute lil location. Im surprised there aren't more reviews for it, but can understand that parking is hard and there are a few other places to eat on the street. In terms of service, the people working there weren't friendly, but weren't rude. We got the beef shank paratha taco (which is basically a scallion pancake instead of a tortilla) and it was really good! The flavor was lovely and the beef shank was super tender. We also got the fried chicken paratha which was also pretty good. Last was the lemongrass dan dan. It was a little on the heavy side, and there was absolutely no lemongrass flavor. It tasted good but I think calling it lemongrass dan dan is generous. We'd definitely be back to try a few other things!

Yelp
Cute little mini mart that has coffee and some food options. We ordered the Buttered Mushroom Noodles and Lemongrass Dan Dan Noodles. Both were delicious! The portions are okay, think they can be more for the price but flavor was great! I do want to try their Vietnamese Coffee next time! A lot of the snacks in the store seem to be from Vietnam. Certain flavors of chips you wouldn't normally find at a regular grocery store. My only con is when you sit outside there a just a lot of flies. Staff is super friendly.

Yelp
Today I tried the Summer Chicken Roll and omg it is heavenly! And healthy. The peanut sauce is the best I have ever tried, would buy bottles of this if they sold it.

Melissa D.

Yelp
Nice service, cute ambiance, delicious food. Didn't try the drinks yet, but will definitely be coming back, the cookie was also a nice treat with saffron and schezuan oil if I remember correctly, believe they rotate flavors.

Yelp
More than what you would think of what "mini mart" is mentioned, Gingergrass has become a frequent stop of mine. They have interesting snacks & drinks to peruse along with FANTASTICALLY delicious, affordable food. Service here has also been consistently top notch! Highly recommend stopping here on the weekends when they have the fresh skewers from 5-9PM

Yelp
This place was adorable and had a nice vibe. However, the only bad thing was the cashier forgot my order and I had to wait around 11-20 minutes for my coffee; my coffee was okay, it wasn't the best nor bad, just felt like a regular coffee you can do at home. Overall I give it a 6/10 because of the wait time and the wait time wasn't worth the coffee I received. However, if you want to have a nice vibe to chill and relax, this is the place!

Yelp
Quick easy and delicious. Got the noodles. If I lived nearby I'd be here all the time.
