Breadsticks from a Different Time at Gino's in Michigan | Bon Appétit

"The same floral vinyl booths that have been there for decades. We found Gino’s through my mother’s parents, a Ford worker and a housewife of German and Scotch extraction. They’d moved anxiously from Pontiac, a small city north of Detroit, to the white suburb of Orchard Lake in 1962. The Santia family, second-generation Italians, opened Gino’s nine years later in nearby Keego Harbor, serving pizza, breadsticks, and Italian-American comfort food to the working and middle classes who’d been flowing to the suburbs from Detroit." - ByTracie McMillan

On March 12, 2025, my family and I were looking forward to a special birthday dinner. Unfortunately, our experience at a steakhouse nearby was nothing short of disappointing. But thankfully, we ended up at Gino’s, and the night was completely turned around! Despite the restaurant being incredibly busy, with a full house and what seemed like no available tables, we were greeted with a genuine smile and a warm welcome. The manager, showing great hospitality, guided us to a table that seemed custom-made for our party of six. It was a thoughtful touch that immediately set the tone for the evening. Our waitress, Vicky, was an absolute gem. Even in the hustle and bustle, she was attentive, friendly, and, most importantly, sincere in making sure we were comfortable. She didn’t just take our order and walk away—she engaged with us, making the evening feel personal. At one point, when my adorable 3-year-old niece demanded a mini dance line-up to show off her ballet moves, Vicky happily joined in, adding an extra layer of joy to the night. After a challenging start to the day, I can’t express how much we appreciated Vicky’s kindness and the warmth of the entire Gino’s team. The food was equally amazing! From start to finish, every dish was top-notch, and my brother even convinced everyone to try his chicken Marsala, which was absolutely delicious. Since our visit, my family and I have brought up that evening countless times, reflecting on what made it so memorable. It wasn’t just the great food—it was the sincere attention to our experience. It’s clear that Gino’s genuinely wants its guests to feel welcome and valued, no matter the circumstances. Thank you, Gino’s, for turning my birthday around and making it a night to remember. We’ll definitely be back! I LOVE YOU GINO’S and VICKY! I should’ve wrote this review sooner.

I love Gino’s. Homestyle Italian cooking at a very reasonable price. Amazing service and they are very accommodating! They really make you feel at home when you are dining. Great Palomino sauce and Chicken Parmesan. Italian sausages are always solid too. The dining room is pretty with cozy booths.

Google
Has gluten free pizza options which is nice but just okay. All the food we ordered was also just okay and nothing amazing. Their pasta tastes like Olive Garden, but more like a step below. Breadsticks were all really hard. The pizza sauce, pasta sauce, lasagna sauce all tastes the same. Soup didn’t taste fresh but their salad was good, wish they’d include more greens instead of iceberg lettuce. The plus is our server who was very kind and attentive.

Google
Great family-owned dining establishment where the owner is just as committed to the community as he is to awesome food! They have incredible pizza but so much more!!!!!! Linda has been here for years and took great care of us. We had ribs and chicken picatta tonight to change it up a bit from pizza. The green beans were delicious! Don't miss the breadsticks ( they didn't hang around long enough for the picture) You can't go wrong with anything on the menu and they really make you feel like family.

Took my mom here for her 80th birthday. The waitress was excellent and the food was great. Atmosphere was quiet, just what we needed. I have fond memories of going here as a kid and they did not disappoint.

April 29th 2025, my girlfriend Olivia and I visited here for dinner. Both of us ordered pizzas. Service was fast, friendly, and prompt. Vicky our waitress was fantastic. Clean place, great food! Highly recommend dining here! 🍕🍕

Google
My fiancée and I had heard wonderful things about this place. We traveled over an hour and it was WELL WORTH IT. We had the Chicken Francese and the Tortellini Pesto. Both were amazing along with the Tiramisu. Rocco was awesome. Will be visiting again, would definitely recommend to anyone in search of quality, authentic Italian Food!

We had a great experience for dinner with our friend for her birthday. Kelsey our server was outstanding!! I asked about the Reuben Pizza and she said it’s so good. Well she was right it was amazing, so please keep this as a regular pizza and not just a special for St.Patrick’s Day! If you like Reuben sandwich’s then you will love this pizza!

Yelp
The very best pizzeria hands down in this area. Always cooked to perfection and the service is great. Gino's is a great place to hang out with friends. Very comfortable atmosphere.

Yelp
Boomer town USA. I think the older crowd likes it because it reminds me of 50s style cooking. Not a lot of flavor and not at all authentic.

Yelp
I arrived for dinner at 5:45 pm on a Tuesday and I was seated right away and given a menu. My server came right over and took my drink order. When she returned with my drink, I ordered the veal parmigiana along with a dinner salad with house dressing. I was excited about eating here because of the reviews I read and with the fact that they had a veal dinner under $20, which is amazing. My salad and breadsticks came right out, and they were fine, it was a dinner salad, and the bread sticks weren't that great. The house dressing was just vinegar and oil. The meal came shortly thereafter, and I could tell by looking at the marinara sauce that I wasn't going to like it. The reviews said that this place was truly authentic, I can tell you I never had marinara sauce made with celery and onions that were in large pieces and not fully cooked, you could say they were al dente. I can see why this veal was priced where it was, it tasted like a processed piece of meat, like you would get from a grocery store. I will tell you that I was not a fan of this food, and I will not be back.

Yelp
Excellent food and service but it took 1.5 hours to get served!! I would probably get a carry out next time and call Way ahead!

Yelp
Delicious pizza!!! I love how crispy the crust is, and it has a sweetness to it. We enjoyed the Gino's Special (cheese, pepperoni, mushrooms, green pepper, bacon, ham and onions). We ordered it without the green peppers. We were given complimentary breadsticks too, which were very fresh, warm, buttery, and fabulous. I also enjoyed my glass of Merlot. Excellent and friendly service. Very spacious restaurant with plenty of seating. There is a large main dining room and then another smaller dining room. Very clean bathroom. Large parking lot. Separate entrance for carry out.

Yelp
It took a while to be seated despite having a reservation. Breadsticks were just ok. Antipasto salad did not have much meat on it. Pasta dishes were good and large.

Tim M.

Yelp
Absolutely horrible. Ordered captain Morgan & Coke & Pinot Grigio. Waitress brought a coke & Chardonnay. Corrected her on drink order and she brought a shot of captain Morgan to add to his coke...,wtf? Salad was sub par at best. Blue cheese dressing was like cream cheese with very little flavor. How is that even possible? Chance #3 entrees. Veal Piccata- came out raw! Sent back finally received after my guest was done with their meal. Even pasta was inedible no taste at all.Used to be good place..no longer! Won't ever be back

Yelp
Went here for a funeral luncheon, and had a family style table meal. The staff was excellent! Very attentive. The food was delicious, and the breadsticks are a must.

Amanda C.

Yelp
I live in the area and decided to order take out and realized why I don't ever find myself frequenting this local establishment. I ordered a pizza, breadsticks and Caesar salad. The pizza was decent but I'm not a fan of canned mushrooms, breadsticks were tasty but I wish it came with a dipping sauce. My biggest issue with my order was the Caesar salad. Who taught the kitchen staff how to cut romaine lettuce? I've never seen so many uncut pieces of lettuce in a salad in my life. Its unfortunate because I love local restaurants but honestly probably won't be back until enough time passes and I forgot why I stopped coming again.

Yelp
I've been coming to Gino's Pizzeria since I was a little kid; back when it was not much more than a shack by the side of the road. We'd always get the cheese, pepperoni and mushroom pizza (so good!!!) and the Gino's Special Salad (always). But the pizza is the star (not sure why they bother to have anything else on the menu); and it's still as good as ever. When you want a break from $5 pizza-like cardboard, come to Gino's to indulge on the real thing.
google avatar

Yelp
Delicious. The shrimp scampi had lots of flavor. Highly recommend this dish to anyone that comes to Gino's!

Olivia G.

Yelp
Love this restaurant, have been going for years. Last trip was amazing! Great suggestions on wine from the server and left with plenty of leftovers. Place to go if you want good pizza! A lot of seating as well.
google avatar

Ana B.

Yelp
Chicken pastina soup was good but that was about it. Not sure what the hype is about this place. Pizza was meh. The cheese pulled off the crust as it was tough. Sub was mediocre and definitely not worth 12$. Breadsticks were gross with the granulated garlic salt.
google avatar

Yelp
Over the years I have gotten primarily pizza, bread sticks and their special Gino's salad at this establishment. The pizza is good and better than the typical chain pizzeria's that dominate this area where prices are in line with the competition. The bread sticks are very tasty and some of the best I have had where the salad is good but kind of on the basic side relative to number of ingredients. Overall it is definitely an option to consider especially if you are looking for change up from the chain pizzeria scene. Four stars......

Yelp
Our work hosted our holiday party here a few weeks before Christmas. Our veteran staff raved about this place as our department used to host holiday parties here. So that was promising! The restaurant is cozy and welcoming. Our group had our own room - it was not fully private so I felt bad for the rest of the customers because our group can get really loud! There was about 25-30 of us total and the room was able to accommodate us all and leave a little extra room to move about. Service was excellent especially with the amount of people at each table. The food was amazing and I was very impressed! Salad and breadsticks were tasty and the salad wasn't too overdressed. Breadsticks were fluffy. Each table ordered pizzas and wow! Pizza was hot and not too doughy. We also had pasta with alfredo sauce. Good amount of sauce to noodle portion and once again it was hot! Great place and amazing food!

Betty L.

Yelp
So glad to see Gino's reopen. A great neighborhood restaurant with really good food at reasonable prices. I ordered pasta with meat sauce, which was delicious, and had enough leftovers for two more meals.

Brad S.

Yelp
Holly was our server. Great job. Omg. Truly one of the best restaurants in Detroit. Holly, you made our evening. See you next time!

Yelp
Came out to support local small business in the area for dinner. Ginos was delicious! The bread sticks and cheese dip I could eat for dinner. The bread was fresh hot and crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. We shared the Asiago gnocchi another must try. Lastly, we shared a pizza, so thin and crispy, we couldn't give enough! If you're in the area stop by this local family owned restaurant you won't be disappointed.

Rick D.

Yelp
We love Gino's!! Rocco is the best restaurant owner in town! We've been there at least 6 times in the last 2 months and every single time the food, service and atmosphere on the patio has been fantastic! Great food, great service, great patio, tremendous value for the money- what else is there? Gino's checks all of our boxes on every single visit. Our only regret is not discovering it years ago, but we're doing our best to make up for that now.
google avatar

Yelp
Manicotti was delicious. Portions were fine. The pasta sauce on the mostaccioli was rather bland. Bread sticks yummy! Service was as very nice and timely.

Cam D.

Yelp
I grew up eating Gino's and I still love it. Best breadsticks and best ranch dressing! The pasta sauce always seems to have a special little something. Love to have Gino's whenever I'm back visiting family!

Yelp
The last time we went here-we were very disappointed! we always get Gino's antipasto salad! Then we order a medium pizza! The waitress brought it to us--after the salad-and, it was all Brown-overcooked & burnt! We didn't eat it (no one could) and they took it off our bill! We decided a month or so to give it another try!!!! Well!!- we told the waitress about the problem we had from the last time! She said the ovens were not working well, but she knew what the problem was--Well-- low & behold-she brings us another brown-over cooked pizza!-we didn't know what to say -&-just tried to eat it (2-3 pcs--and paid our bill & left___ I know now we will never go back to this place!! I'm so sorry that I didn't say anything--which is my fault! It's so hard to believe that they serve a pizza this bad!!! I don't want to give them another chance-let alone pay for that mess!!!!!!

Yelp
Ignorance and complete lack of understanding on how to write a menu, communicate with a rightfully upset patron with a food allergy, provide edible food and make up for aforementioned issues. They also went above and beyond to reply to a review highlighting their own poor grammar and blaming the patron for their unsatisfactory experience. I can't think of a worse way to treat potential guests to my family's restaurant. The owner should really be ashamed he has people working there that would treat someone so poorly when they paid to be there.

Yelp
We ordered a med. pizza and house salad. Pick them up. The salad was great , the pizza and bread sticks were not good at all they tasted old. The pizza was tough like it was made yesterday and reheated with olives and onions. Thrown on it. Not happy

Yelp
This is a really nice little gem. The decor and furniture may be a little outdate but they have something that never goes out of style: great service and great food. Their breadsticks are pretty good, they are incredibly good if you order their garlic paste with the breadsticks. Their bruschetta is pretty good for appetizer and so is their Greek salad. LOTS of flavor. Their pizza is good but their Italian dishes is what they really do well. Their chicken Marsala is the best I've had in Michigan. Great flavor without being overpowering and not so much food you get too stuffed. The only dessert I've tried is their cannoli which I thought was quite good. Not crunchy hard just about the right texture. We have been here several times and we have had really good service every time.

Matthew M.

Yelp
Had this place before in March of 2021 and really loved food and breadsticks. Came back for that reason. This time was definitely disappointed. Picked up the food and that's were the trip went south. Staff that greeted us were quite rude. Food clearly had been left out for +10 minutes before we arrived. Cashier at take-out was coughing right into her hand and over our food before handing us it. Stench of cigarette smoke filled the air. Not a mask in sight. Breadsticks were dry and served without any sauce. Mostaccioli was bland as was spaghetti. Salad was okay. Going to have to take something special to make us come back here.

Yelp
Thanks for providing my family and friends with a wonderful evening! The food menu for my brothers 40th birthday was great! Suzanne, our waitress rocked and handled 35 people like a champ. She was on the ball the entire time. Rocco and Gino should know they exceeded our expectations and can't wait for the next dinner and of course next party. You never disappoint! Thank you! Yelp
I ordered delivery through a delivery service. The food arrived hot but I was bitterly disappointed at what I received. I had ordered spaghetti ($8.95) with meatballs (an additional $2.00) and got $0.50 worth of lightly sauced spaghetti and one meatball that was a little bit bigger than a golf ball. Never again.
google avatar

Yelp
Cozy atmosphere and great service. My daughter and I found a new favorite. I could eat that eggplant parm on the regular!

Yelp
My family and I have been going to Gino's since the 80's. Usually good food and good to excellent service. Today was a sad exception. I went there with my Mom and Brother. It was the usual ten minutes wait for a table. They had two big parties going on so I can understand a delay and stressed staff. The waitress was a bit snippy with us. My brother, who's autistic, takes more time to order because he asks lots of questions and wants to know all his options of soups and salad dressings. The worst part was our wait for our food. Like I said I can understand if they were behind because of the two parties. However at least three tables that were seated after us got their food before us. One had a similar order and another was already eating their ice-cream desert before we finally got our food. When we asked why it was taking so long they said they had to remake a batch of mostaccioli. That was an obvious lie since people that were seated after us got their mostaccioli before us. My chicken parmesan was dead cold when it was finally served. I ate it because we I didn't want my Mother and autistic Brother to spend any more time waiting than they already had. She apologized at the end of the meal for the wait repeating the lie about the mostaccioli and blaming the two parties. I would have accepted the truth but not a lie. Since we've had lots of other good experiences here we'll probably return eventually, but it'll be a long while before we do. The only reason I'm not giving it one star is because of our previous experiences.

Michael P.

Yelp
Excellent food for a fall evening. Ordered here several times and NEVER disappointed. The cod dinner this evening could not have been better. Big chunky pieces of buttered cod hit the spot!!
google avatar

Jeff R.

Yelp
Usually great pizza and the BEST breadsticks. Tonight... not so much. Breadsticks were great but pizza was a bit well done along the center of the pie, giving it a slightly burnt taste. Don't you hate pizza when the cheese slide off when you scoop it off with a spatula, even after to attempt to do additional cutting with knife. Oh well! Waiter was very friendly

Yelp
3.5 stars - I have been going to this place since I was a kid, but had not been back in over a decade. I decided to go back last week when my pregnant wife had a garlic bread craving. I was shocked and happy to see that nothing has really changed. They still have some of the best garlic bread in Detroit. It is not too greasy or salty, and the garlic flavor is spot on. The food is typical Italian restaurant fare. My standby is the gnocchi, but the pizza is also solid. There is also a nice bar area, and a patio with live music on the weekend. There are places like this in everyone neighborhood, so it may not be something you should go out of your way to try. However, if you find yourself in the area, I would encourage you to pop in for a solid Italian meal in a truly local joint.

Saucinlike I.

Yelp
What a joke. I take a slice and everything falls off. Disappointing. Talk to your chefs. Please

Anna S.

Yelp
"Adequate" is a perfect word to describe Gino's. It's nothing special, the menu is what you'd expect, pricing isn't bad, and the food is decent. I've had much better independent Italian food elsewhere, and I've also had much worse. The breadsticks were really good, as another reviewer said, but we just weren't that impressed with the chicken parmesan or the lemon chicken pasta thing my dad ordered. Probably wouldn't be back.

Julie L.

Yelp
Great family place. Love the food. Service is always pleasant! Love that they have specials and a large selection. My son got the NY strip and it was perfectly cooked and he really enjoyed the zip. Fresh ingredients..

Sue S.

Yelp
Be sure to find the latest menu online at their web site. Menu posted on Yelp is outdated.
google avatar

Ornella B.

Yelp
Solid pizza. Thin and crispy - New York style - my favorite!! We had one with pepperoni, peppers, and onions..yummmm!! If you haven't had that combo, please try it, its amazinggggg :) We also got an order of their breadsticks and garlic cheese dip. You MUST get the dip. Do ittttt, thank me later ;)
google avatar

Kevin B.

Yelp
Bit into a meatball sub to find not only the meatballs to be sub-par at best (they tasted old) but the bread was also moldy. Needless to say it's the last time I'll eat here. Disgusting that they would serve this to human beings, I wouldn't feed this to my dog.
google avatar

Todd S.

Yelp
Yum. Yum. Great meal. Exactly what you'd expect. Everything about this place just feels right. Meatball sub, pizza, and antipasto salad. What could be better?
google avatar

Brian M.

Yelp
Without a doubt a classic Keego Italian eatery with consistent quality and friendly service. I love this place!! Gino, Marco and Rocco know the restaurant business very well and always aim to please. They are also very community oriented and often donate and help and host when needed. Love the antipasto salad and their pizza is to die for!! Did I mention how Tasty their minestrone soup is? Get over here and see for yourself why Ginos is the best!
google avatar

Melissa G.

Yelp
I haven't been there in a very long time. Yesterday I went there to meet a date and I was very disappointed, by that I mean the server was bland had no personality. When we ordered our appetizer along with our food order the salads came first than before you knew it not only did our appetizer come, but so did our food. Than after that a little bit of time went by and the server made us feel like we were taking up space, when there was hardly people in there to begin with. So we got up and left and myself and my date said we won't be back.

Jessica B.

Yelp
Nice little place. Similar to Antonio's in Farmington Hills. Prices are similar as well. The best thing about them is they have the garlic cheese dipping sauce for bread.
google avatar

Mitch D.

Yelp
I've been in and out of Keego Harbor, living all around the u.s , every time I land back in Keego or the surrounding area nothing beats gino's Pizza! It's always nice to see Gino, he always greets me and he's never forgot my name. Thanks Gino for being there for the last 45 years!!!

Runt R.

Yelp
Food is usually good but unless you like hot jalapeno's don't get the spaghetti sauce so spicy could not eat it. Place needs an upgrade on the inside decor also.
google avatar

Jessica B.

Yelp
This place has been around forever! Pizza, salad and bread are always on point. The staff is also always friendly. It's a hidden gem in Keego!
google avatar

Rob J.

Yelp
Great family restaurant. Pizza was good. Above average. Offered a variety for everyone. The chocolate cake was delicious. Service was great. We can't in with a larger group and there was no let down in service. We will return.

Yelp
GINO PIZZERIA AND RESTAURANT. I was driving around Keego Harbor and saw this restaurant and said I will give it a try, I was very pleased I made the decision. A wonderful family restaurant with excellent personal service and food. Happy I found it and will be back again. It is so nice when the owners family comes up to you during dinner and asks how are things going. Very nice place. Richard

Yelp
We went for lunch . I had the veal parmigiana with side of spaghetti and the salad bar. My husband had the Gino's meatball sub. My veal was a reheated veal Patty you can buy at any grocery store. The side spaghetti was overcooked and not tasty at all. The saving grace was the very small salad bar. Not any items to choose from but tasted fresh and with the bread sticks it made a nice lunch. The meatball sub was disappointing as they took one or two meatballs and sliced it pretty thin and spread over the roll. It was a SAD sandwich. Will not be going back.
