The 37 Best Restaurants in St. Louis, Missouri | Eater

"In 2017, Gioia’s Deli, an unassuming sandwich shop in St. Louis’ historic Italian-American neighborhood, was honored with a James Beard America’s Classics award. While the dining community was thrilled, locals tended to smile and shake their heads at the fanfare suddenly heaped on the casual spot that had served their families for a hundred years. Gioia’s offers exceptional deli sandwiches, but it’s most famous for the hot salami sandwich, known to everyone in St. Louis simply as “the hot salami,” which is still made with a recipe crafted by founder Charlie Gioia. You can order it on any type of bread and dress it with any of Gioia’s cheeses and condiments, but the star is the sausage (beef, pig’s head, spices) sliced in front of you." - Holly Fann

Amazing sandwich! Pretty expensive but worth the cost for something different than all of your chain sandwich shops. The service was phenomenal. I’ve never been and asked for some suggestions, the amazing lady behind the counter gave me several and we went with the trio because of her suggestion. The bread and cheese alone could have been an amazing meal. But the meats are high quality and delicious. Would highly recommend. Can get busy at all the times. Order ahead if you want

Google
Great place! Love Gioia’s for a quick sandwich. After becoming gluten free, I wish they would explore creating a GF bread. My salad was fine, but I miss the good bread! Staff was friendly and kind.

Google
We had the Italian Trio & Turkey w/bacon. Subs were delish and we got there right in time. We got our food quickly but the line started getting longer right around 12 noon. They kept it moving and had all kinds of people in and out with takeout orders.

Wayne Lewis

Google
Ok, so, I'm not sure if Gioia’s is actually legal. I had the Italian Trio. It was called a sandwich but it feels like it could be considered a controlled substance. You know you are experiencing something special when bite #20 is just as good as bite #1. I brought my mom. She opened her sandwich to look inside. I had to look away because if this sandwich was illegal, I figured the less I knew, the better my defense would be. And some things are better left unexplained, like magic tricks or classified operations. I ate the whole thing without hesitation. A new "happy place" in my memory was created and, legal or not, I will be back.

Google
Just OK. First time ever going. Informed them that was my first time and told them I was considering the meatball sub. They recommended putting pepperoni on it, which I said that sounds great. Also ordered it with lettuce, mayo, parm and oregano. I got a 20oz fountain soda, and with a 15% tip the sub and soda cost $19.07. I get it home and find no lettuce, no mayo, no oregano, and also no pepperoni. The meatballs were a bit dry and it needed more sauce. It’s on par with Subway. Very over priced, and I’m not sure how you forget to put half the items on the sandwich. I’m staring at the order slip as I write this. Wont be back..

Google
Gioia’s is the absolute best! ♥️The food is divine and the people that prepare it are amazing! Everything is tasty and tantalizing! The food is crafted with perfection and skill. I appreciate their attention to detail! Every single bite is a new revelation! They never disappoint and Ms. Kena (at the register) is an aficionado on all things on their amazing menu! I wish I could dine here every single day!

Google
I was highly recommended to give this place a try and I am so glad that we did! The food is delicious and fresh. I got the original hot salami and it did not disappoint! The lady at the counter was incredibly nice and helpful. We will definitely be back!

Google
Mmm, I got the hot salami and my son got the meatball sandwich. Both were YUMMY! My son's sandwich was steaming hot to the last bite. We went a little after the lunch rush and there was NO WAIT to order. Our sandwiches were ready quickly and we ate in the deli. Yes, this is a deli, so don't expect much atmosphere...just great food.

Yelp
Look, I may not be from Long Island, but I am someone who takes sandwiches very seriously--and Gioia's Deli? This place is a religious experience between two slices of bread. The hot salami? Absolute perfection. It's spicy, juicy, and stacked like it's trying to win an award. I took one bite and immediately considered calling my ancestors to say, "We've peaked." The vibe is fast, friendly, and full of locals who clearly know this is sacred ground. You don't come here to "try something light." You come here to eat like your Nonna's watching and she's judging your portion size. Pro tip: grab extra napkins, say yes to the pepper spread, and don't make eye contact with your sandwich unless you're emotionally ready for that kind of commitment.
google avatar

Mark H.

Yelp
The sandwiches were just ok, but when you ask for salt and pepper, simply because their potato salad needed it, and are told that they don't offer that to patrons, it's extremely off-putting. I don't recall any issues like that with the location on The Hill, but maybe this location is making decisions for there customers. I had a large "Lunch and Learn" last week and didn't even consider Gioia's after my experience in Dardenne Prairie. You guys certainly made an impression!
google avatar

Julie L.

Yelp
Meat subs averaging $8-13; go for the large! Ingredients are fresh, bread is soft and chewy, and the meats are great quality. Lines can be long but it's worth the wait. Highly recommend you up an extra original summer sausage! It's perfectly seasoned and marbled.
google avatar

Yelp
I got Gioia's to go today, it was quick and smelled delicious inside! I got the turkey on wheat with veggies (tomato, onion, lettuce, pepperonici) and sriracha mayo. Loved it! So fresh and tasty - excited to try more things on the menu!
google avatar

Monica M.

Yelp
Finally tried the famous Gioia's Deli last week and was not disappointed! Got my husband the Italian beef and I tried the salami and Italian beef and added ham. Added giardiniera, mozzarella, lettuce, tomato, mayo and this was a top tier combo. Add some rap snacks and a couple chocolate chip cookies (don't sleep on these- they are huge and the perfect combination of soft and crispy) and we had an amazing lunch! We will be back!

Yelp
Great service.. happy helpful smiles even a gal brand new who was immensely helpful. Saw me struggling deciding behind the glass.. I did the hot salami & Italian.. prob the best sandwhich in stl. Hot & fresh.. smiles .. exactly what a deli should be.: old style lost on a lot of people these days.. Also what could be helpful is an adult extra small sand and pricing plus gf bread option.. this small is a meal for me for three days and kinda pricey w half of it prob going to waste..

Yelp
First timer and I can't believe it took me so long to get here. Their sandwiches are simply delicious! The bread, the cheese, the meat. I got the salami and roast beef sandwich on cheese garlic bread hot, with lettuce, giardiniera, pepperoncini, horsey mayo, and asked for a side of the au jus! It's a cute, no frills, sandwich shop. Their expo line is fast and the food can't be beat. So good! I'll definitely be back!

Yelp
Gioia's deli is delicious. The smell of these amazing sandwiches are the first thing you'll notice when you walk into this place - and if you are craving a sub, this is 100 percent the best place to go. My boyfriend and I visited this cute little place when we were up at the hill because we wanted a quick place to eat and immediately their meatball sub caught my eye. The staff was friendly, their sandwiches were made quick - and if you want to see just how good their meatball sub was you'll have to go visit yourself (But take a look at the pictures below and I think you'll be able to imagine just how beautiful the sandwiches here are ) *Additionally you can ask for garlic cheese bread with all of their sandwich's. I highly recommend this upgrade!

Yelp
Wonderful food. The best sandwiches. Great location ambiance wonderful. Have to try this place. Great
google avatar

Elijah R.

Yelp
The sandwich was 10/10. The customer service is why I gave it four stars. The cooks were nice but the cash register lady could have been more welcoming (maybe she was having a bad day, not my problem lbvs) so
google avatar

Duane B.

Yelp
Salami sandwich is great as usual but what happened to their Italian sausage soup!? It hasn't been available the last few times I've ordered from any of their locations. Today when I asked about it the lady at the cash register acted like I was stupid for asking. This is the best soup ever and if the aren't serving it anymore I'd at least like to have the recipe so I can make my own.

Yelp
I was only about 5 minutes away when I placed my order on the App. By the time I got there, parked and went inside, a gentlemen was placing an order on the pick up shelf. I went over and whadda you know, it was my order. That fast! This was the first time ordering a salad, and it (Lg Gioia's deli salad) was very good! The food (Lg Club, both Meatball, & Porknado had the toasted garlic cheese bread) was just as delicious as we have had before. One of our guest said the Hot roast beef (gotta get the toasted garlic cheese bread on it) was the best they have had. This was even after warming up because they joined us late! Great food! Super fast service! Kudos to the staff!

Yelp
Took the advice of the Yelp Army and decided to give Gioias a try. Located in a strip mall in Creve Coeur Missouri. Gioias Deli is a small drive outside of St. Louis and definitely worth a try. Are typically not sandwich people but today seems to be the lucky day. I've heard several great reviews of how good Gioias didn't disappoint. We visited during a Saturday lunch rush and got lucky as the line was not long. Gioias has a very diverse menu of sandwiches and salads and also serves chili. I asked a few patrons what their go to sandwich was and everyone said everything. That being said we went with the Spicy Daggett, Hot Italian and the Hot Roast Beef. All sandwiches were served hit. On fresh bread and loaded with condiments. Prices were reasonable and great portions. Seating at Gioias is limited but on a nice day like today, we sat outside and enjoyed the weather. Overall, great experience and will be back. If you're in the area give Gioias a try.
google avatar

Vineela S.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite delis in STL. I've had the Spicy Daggett before, which was a great sandwich. However, my new favorite sandwich here is the Hot Salami & Roast Beef on the garlic cheese bread. I like to add extra veggies to it to balance out the sandwich. They don't skimp out on the portions here! The sandwiches here are gigantic and priced accordingly. Be aware that this location can get pretty packed and even parking in the lot can be difficult around peak hours. Also, online orders typically take 20 - 30 minutes.
google avatar

Eleisha M.

Yelp
I stopped by Gioia's on New Ballas to grab lunch to go. The hot salami on garlic bread is my "go-to" here. But they have an extensive menu and you have the option to build your own sandwich. Technically you could eat here for a month and never eat the same thing twice. Family oriented and owned. Great place to grab lunch, or an early dinner (they close at 4:00 pm). They have three locations around St Louis - The Hill, Creve Coeur, and Maryland Heights. Stop by and check them out! Dine in, delivery, or take out. There is no reason why you have to go without Gioia's.
google avatar

Jaimie R.

Yelp
I had some friends visiting me from out of state and Gioias was on their food bucket list of things to try in St. Louis. I've never been here either and I'm always down for sandwiches. We got there probably at the tail end of the lunch rush. There was a line but it wasn't too bad of a wait. I ordered the hot salami sandwiches for my kids on the garlic cheese bread. And then I got the hot roast beef on the garlic cheese bread. The price was a little higher than I would normally pay but the portions are huge so I was fine. The sandwiches were soooo good! You can tell the bread was fresh and I really want to say their Mayo is house made or it's one I've never had because it was sweet tasting but complimented the sandwich well. The salami is thick sliced and I ended up stealing a couple bites from my kids. I would go back again and again. I'd like to try the other location next time but this one was great.
google avatar

Matt K.

Yelp
Came yesterday and got the Hot Salami and roast beef with provel and horsey mayo. Got home and had explosive diarrhea. This was the only thing I ate yesterday. Do better. Something is going on with your health standards.
google avatar

Ethan S.

Yelp
Excellent sandwich that hit the spot for lunch. I was extra hungry this particular occasion, so I was able to eat the whole sandwich. But it's a lot of food, so be prepared to take leftovers home. You order at the counter, but the people who worked there were very friendly and helpful. I love that it's a stl local restaurant, and although the inside was pretty simple with no fancy decorations, it still had a lot of that charm that the old delis used to have. Go in, order your delicious sandwich, and leave happy. It's that simple.

Louise W.

Yelp
Food fantastic Staff impeccable We had couple wants and needs and staff assisted without any concerns Highly recommend

Shara W.

Yelp
Finally got to after following for ages on FB. Got the Italian trio and garlic cheese bread for my granddaughter -both so good and enough sandwich for later! A perfect stop after playing in Millennium Park. Service was great also.
google avatar

Fran M.

Yelp
I'm a huge fan of Gioia's - never had a bad meal here! 5 stars! A colleague and I recently got lunch, and all I have to say is So. Much. Joy. No matter what you order you can count on fresh, delicious food. This trip I have to give some love to their roast beef sandwich. I had mine with pepper Jack cheese, peperoncini, and their toasted garlic buttered roll. It's one of the best roast beef sammie I've had -- the roast beef was abundant and super thin. The juice soaked into that garlicky, buttered, crusty bread goodness, and the peppers gave some nice kick. The portion was enough for me to have lunch and a little snacky snack for later. The chef's kiss was their homemade chocolate chip cookie. Do yourself a favor, and splurge with the sweet treat! I highly recommend Gioia's! It's va bene!
google avatar

Yelp
Quick and friendly service, definitely one of the best sandwich shops in the St. Louis area!

Yelp
On small business Saturday we wanted to show some love to our favorite sandwich shop in the Lou. Having Family in town for the holiday we had eager mouths to feed. The Gioia's West County, Creve Coeur, location was easiest for our pickup. We ordered online from a cell phone and found the process to be seamless. When we arrived for pickup, our order was ready and waiting. Everything was hot, fresh, and delicious. The sandwiches hold for a good 30-40 minutes at least even dressed. I am already planning my next Hot Roast Beef. I normally have Hot Roast Beef on Garlic Cheese Bread, but this time had toasted white with Provel. It was amazing...I will switch between the two amazing choices. Of course everone loves the Bread the sandwiches are on, the perfect combination of crust and chew. We had 7 Sandwiches, and everyone was stuffed and very happy. All orders were correct. The employees are always stellar. We will be back soon.

Payton R.

Yelp
BEST SANDWICH !!!! Ive ever had the service was great very kind and helpful and it was so inviting I'm definitely going to be back soon .
google avatar

Angela C.

Yelp
Can't believe I lived in the Creve Coeur area for so long and just recently tried Gioia's Deli. Their sandwiches are honestly the freshest and most well seasoned Italian sandwiches I've tried in St. Louis. I used to live in Little Italy in Chicago and felt the Italian beef sandwiches were good. But Gioia's roast beef sandwiches are spectacular. Even my 10 month old baby gobbled down the roast beef. When I brought sandwiches home once, the bread stayed crispy (how??) and was still very delicious. Their service is fast, which is really what I want when I'm there for a quick lunch. There's something special about being in a random plaza near Olive Blvd and being able to step into an authentic Italian Deli that feels like a place on The Hill.
google avatar

Andy W.

Yelp
Short and sweet - best Italian sub sandwiches in town! Bread is fresh, most sandwiches are toasted, and you can customize them any way you want. Forget Sub***, or Jersey Mik** or Fireh****. For this kind of lunch in the Maryland Heights (or Hill) area, this is the place. There are also a few outside tables if that's how you roll. Note: If you like this review, please let me know...

James L.

Yelp
Great food and very efficient service. Went for pickup and they were busy. Still was welcomed and easily got our food.
google avatar

Megan B.

Yelp
Solid sandwich. I ordered the Spicy Daggett because they said they were known for their hot salami and I added lots of toppings - lettuce tomato olives onions sriracha Mayo - and YUM was it good. They also gave me a side of roast beef for the dogs so bonus points for sure. The sandwich was HUGE - it was plenty for lunch and dinner! Indoor and outdoor seating and drinks and chips are the side selections.

Elizabeth P.

Yelp
Stopped during a busy lunch hour....the staff handled it amazingly well. Enjoyed trying the salami. Would definitely consider a return visit!
google avatar

Tania A.

Yelp
I was working nearby today and decided to stop in to check out their sandwiches. We have heard from friends that they make delicious sandwiches. I ordered the turkey sandwich on wheat with lettuce, tomato and sriracha Mayo and I also asked for it to be toasted. The sandwich is enormous so much better value than what you can get at BreadCo that's for sure and the bread tasted really fresh and toasty. I wish I could have eaten the whole thing but it is just too big for me. I could have shared that sandwich. Overall a good experience!
google avatar

Natalie S.

Yelp
Wow this place was fantastic. We had to get the hit salami sandwich with provel cheese and OMG!!! We will Be back and we got a package of sausages for home.
google avatar

Julie D.

Yelp
The sandwiches are big enough for 2 meals! We planned on sharing a Spicy Daggett and Italian Trio, but we were full after a half sandwich.

Paul D.

Yelp
Absolutely wonderful. The hot salami sandwiches which unfortunately are the only ones I've had at Gioia's are the greatest thing since sliced bread ( pun intended). Someday I might try something else but I don't want to tempt fate. I'm from Chicago and other than the breaded steak sandwich at Ricobenes and maybe a pastrami sandwich from Katz's in New York this is the best. La ringrazio

Brian B.

Yelp
Well shoot. I was planning to ding this place for taking so long to prepare my sandwich. And then none of the tables were clean. And the price was outrageous...$15 for a 9-inch sammy. But holy smokes, they make an absolutely delicious sandwich. I got the spicy daggett. It ranks right up there with the best of 'em. So for all the negatives at the top of the review, the finished product offset most of the other issues. Tip: Never heard of using garlic toast for the bread on a sandwich. This was an amazing delight too.

Cynthia H.

Yelp
Great food and great service! Love Gioia'a Deli and the N New Ballas store is such a convenient location.
google avatar

Savannah K.

Yelp
Quick service, quality sandwich. All customizable so you can make each sandwich your own--I do wish they had more toppings as options but the basics are available (tomato, onion, lettuce, etc.). The bread was delicious!
google avatar

Drew R.

Yelp
First visit to this location. Normally visit the venerable original store on The Hill for lunch. when we go shopping. Had a severely hankering for hot salami and this spot was closer. Used the online ordering, which was easy and fast. Picked my time for pick up. My bag was waiting for me in the pick up area on time. Nice store. I was happy to see several people ordering inside, one table of diners outside and multiple carry out orders waiting for pick up. My Spicy Dagget on tossed garlic bread was excellent and my wife enjoyed her Roast Beef., also on garlic bread for a $1 more. Zapp's Jalapeño chips too. I'll be back.
google avatar

Sarah W.

Yelp
I went with my coworkers here for lunch and I was really disappointed in the lack of vegetarian options. My only choice was to get a sandwich without any of the meat, lettuce, tomatoes, and onions. It wasn't great.
google avatar

Ian _.

Yelp
Great sandwiches! For some fair priced good tasting sandwiches I would go here if I were in the Creve Coeur area. Service was good and store was clean. Would recommend!
google avatar

David W.

Yelp
Gioia's deli is known for their salami and boy does it not disappoint. We came and ordered 4 sandwiches including the hot salami, hogfather, Italian, and roast beef and all 4 were delicious. They allow you to fully customize your sandwich by adding whatever ingredients you'd like on top of their recommended toppings. The bread was excellent, the meats were excellent, vegetables all fresh. Personal favorite was the hogfather or the hot salami, and will definitely be back to order. The large is a 9inch I believe and very filling.
google avatar

Amy L.

Yelp
My favorite sandwich here is the Big Italian. It's pepperoni and the homemade salami on garlic cheese bread although I get it on just garlic bread, no cheese. All I have them put on is light oil and vinegar although that isn't even necessary. It doesn't need anything more than that because it's such a delicious sandwich as is. I highly recommend it. It's a sandwich I often find myself thinking about because it's that special. If you come around lunch there can definitely be a wait. The dining area is small and fills up quickly. It's nice that you can order ahead to pick it up. The people that work there are pretty nice. I get the feeling that you can't go wrong with anything there.

Mohammad A.

Yelp
Really like this place. Great sandwiches and salads. Location is perfect for me. Should try it out
google avatar

Jacque T.

Yelp
If you have not been here --- you are really missing out ! Incredible beyond words, try the Hot Salami & Roast-beef on Garlic cheese bread (seriously the best) - fresh & tasty. If you like salami you have to read on their website how they prepare, fascinating. The staff is always friendly & give great service.
google avatar

Jim B.

Yelp
Finally tried the Ballas location before work and it was a solid sandwich. I ordered the hot salami/ roast beef on cheese bread. It was 9 inches of goodness, no way I could eat the whole thing. I recommend going halves with someone. Sandwich with chips and drink came up to approximately $19. I have seen previous reviews that have said the place was pricey but for the quality and quantity, I don't feel it's overpriced for what you get. I see why they have been turning out these sandwiches for generations. I could have used a nap after chowing. Thanks
google avatar

Michael C.

Yelp
Who ever owns this is a genius. Fabulous food with simple but great ingredients! Service is quick, my only complaint is the lack of seating and sadly people sit down as soon as they get here without food and takeover a table for no reason! Either they are not thinking or just plain rude, oh well. That doesn't stop me from always getting the hot salami w roast beef, sadly I can't come here without getting that since it is so darn good! I need to get out of my "funk", I will probably need some psychological counseling..one day I will try the Italian trio or porknado, one day!!
google avatar

Christina K.

Yelp
I'm a big fan of deli's, especially ones that originated on The Hill. Gioia's in Creve Coeur did not disappoint. I had the Porknado which turned out to be a HUGE sandwich loaded with meat on cheesy garlic bread with just a smattering of veggies, which in all honesty was all they could squeeze on that bread with that much meat. It was fantastic! My husband had the meatball sub on cheese garlic bread. According to him the meatballs were large, juicy and full of flavor. He said it was the best meatball sandwich he's ever had. The sandwiches aren't cheap but they are so big you'll likely get two meals out of one so the cost will balance out.
google avatar

Ryan W.

Yelp
We were excited to come here but the line went out the door! We waited in line for around 30 minutes and to be honest you could get the same sandwiches that we got at Subway for a cheaper price. On the upside everyone there was really nice to us when we came in.

Carol T.

Yelp
Good food, efficient service as they are always very busy. There are a few tables inside and out.

Will F.

Yelp
been 2x now and explicitly ask for no lettuce and the dude making the sandwiches who is clearly high puts lettuce on it everytime.
