Are you Team Deep Dish or Tavern Crust? That’s the debate in Chicago, and with Giordano's celebrating 50 years, it's a great time to weigh in! Established in 1974 by brothers Efren and Joseph, this iconic pizzeria started on the South Side, using their mother’s Italian Easter pie recipe. Today, Giordano's boasts over 65 locations across several states, including Florida, Colorado, and Nevada.
On our visit to the West Loop/Greek Town location, we opted for the classic deep dish with sausage, pepperoni, and a spicy kick from hot giardiniera. The flavors were bold, the meats hearty, and the giardiniera added just the right amount of heat. While we also sampled their tavern crust pizza with pepperoni, mushrooms, and black olives, I found myself leaning toward Team Deep Dish. A thinner, crispier crust might’ve swayed my vote.
While waiting for our deep dish (which takes about 40 minutes), we indulged in starters. The Italian beef arancini was an absolute dream—crispy on the outside, beef-packed inside, with marinara and au jus for dipping. Perfection! The fried calamari with fried banana peppers offered a unique, spicy twist, and the Greek salad added a refreshing balance.
Congrats, Giordano's, on 50 years of deep dish dominance—you're an essential part of Chicago's culinary legacy!
