Best Muffulettas in New Orleans | Eater New Orleans

"Metairie’s charming, family-run Giorlando’s restaurant opened in 1972 and is much loved by locals and neighbors. Giorlando’s muffuletta comes on a nine-inch round of fresh baked bread, filled with salami, ham, mortadella, mozzarella, Swiss, and John G’s olive salad, served hot. Now run by the second generation, the restaurant’s Facebook page is pretty adorable with mostly family photos. Good to know: It’s closed on the weekends." - Beth D’Addono

This is a wonderful local restaurant. I went two times during my visit here. The first day I went I picked up some bread pudding and Danielle my server told me I would be back the next day for more. Well, she was right. That was the best bread pudding I ever had. I highly recommend it. Next day I came back in and I got Mama G's Eggplant and it was also delicious, I cleaned my plate. After that I loved the bread pudding so much I ordered it again, but to go so I could try their Bananas Foster cheese cake which was also phenomenal. They had just enough warm banana's foster and sauce to go with the cold cheese cake, it was delightful. Overall, the service was great, I saw Danielle again the second day and she was awesome both times I had her. The other servers I interacted with in-between were also kind and working diligently. The atmosphere was nice too, you could tell this was more of a local spot with the history behind the restaurant and the overall vibe. This restaurant's main dishes were delicious themselves, but they absolutely killed it with the desserts I tried. I will be back here someday, I want to show my friends and family this spot, until then I recommend it to others as well. I hope this place keeps running strong for years to come, because if I ever can't have that bread pudding again I will cry. Thank you to all of you who work here and make tasty food 🙏

This place has been around for a long long time and once you walk in the door that becomes obvious. It's one of those classic local restaurant spots where people have been going for decades and the average age of the people in the place represents that. But unlike similar spots in New Orleans like mandinas, I find the food here is much more consistent and good quality. The prices are definitely not cheap but they're not super expensive, the portions are good, but a good bit of the menu is a la carte so if you order an entree you'll have to pay extra to get a salad or a side with it. It's also annoying that things like their homemade onion rings are only available in a very large order that will cost you 12 bucks. Service can be hit and miss but the food usually makes up for it.

First time here, had the muffelata and it was very good. Great flavor, just wish it was a little thicker. Shrimp poboy was very good as well.

Google
I cannot say enough about this place. We drove down to New Orleans to see a show and stopped by here beforehand. It was just something that seemed to be both affordable and highly rated. We'd never been here before. Everything was FANTASTIC. They fry their own tortillas to dip with spinach and artichoke dip, and it's honestly the best appetizer I think I've ever had in my life. The meals themselves were phenomenal as well. And everything was well within budget. On top of that, there was no wait, and the service was fantastic. Christophe made me literally laugh out loud at one point. The atmosphere was lovely as well. Just A+ all the way around.

Google
We were visiting the area and chose this place due to there being so many different options to choose from. I looked at online menus for a good hour before choosing this wonderful little place. They have something for everyone. We ordered the Grilled chicken tomato basil pasta, Grilled chicken salad, Old fashioned meatballs and spaghetti, Ribeye, fish, all were cooked and seasoned to perfection. It was so good we went back the next day and ate again before leaving town. The hostess was very nice and our waitress was excellent which we were lucky enough to have on both days. I will definitely be eating here again on our next trip. Excited to try the club sandwich next time.

Google
Fabulous old-school Italian/Creole restaurant! Typical menu offerings for a New Orleans-area Italian/Creole restaurant: lasagna, pasta dishes, plus po-boys (excellent roast beef!), gumbo, steaks, etc. The ambience is nice - no fluorescent lighting, tables are well spaced and clean, the service is always outstanding! A very wonderful dining experience. Repeat customer here, I have never had anything less than an amazing dining experience here. 10*/10* One of Metairie’s best hidden gems!

Google
Great place, love the salads, their house made dressings are delicious, especially loved the blue cheese. Friendly staff and great value for money, can't wait to come back

Google
This was our first time visiting the restaurant. Let me first say, It's a lot smaller than I expected. However, it provides a more intimate setting. The portions are amazing and the flavors are on point. I ordered the Cheese and Gravy Fries and the Calamari. I'm a sucker for calamari so every time I visit an Italian restaurant, I have to try their calamari. I like to base an Italian restaurant off of their Calamari, Caesar dressing, Veal and of course Marinara sauce! I don't eat spaghetti 🤷🏽‍♀️ For the entrees, my youngest son had the kids portion of the Shrimp and Fries. My oldest son had the Shrimp Etouffee which was very impressive. For an Italian restaurant they hit the nail on the head. The gravy was delicious. The rice to gravy ratio was just right. I was really indecisive from what I wanted to order because everything sounded so well on the menu until I saw the Bacon Shrimp and Avocado Salad. Goodness, the shrimp were huge and well seasoned. I couldn't decide if I wanted the Caesar or the vinaigrette dressing so I opted for both. They make their own croutons and Caesar dressing and as I will tell you, absolutely delicious. Our server, Chris was impressive. He was well attentive and knew the menu very well. He made sure that our drinks were filled, our table was always cleared and definitely interacted with my youngest. I found his service to be exceptional. I highly recommend him and when we return, I will ask for him. Prices are fair and the kitchen was fast. Overall, if they were more stars they would receive it!! Oh, and their meatballs are HUGE and PLUMP as my son would tell ya!

Yelp
Never had a bad meal here. Service can be a bit off, but only when its busy. The servers are working their tails off, but a full restaurant might just be to much for them to handle. If its not busy, I've always found them to be on top of it. Drinks refilled before they're empty, etc. We tend toward the shrimp etouffee and the chicken parmesan. Both very solid, and above all, consistantly the same and good. Fries and alfredo pasta are good as well. All in all, I'd pick Giorlandos over 90% of other restaurants in Metairie. Highly recommended.

Yelp
Weekday lunch with husband. Craving Italian and this came up on a Yelp search near our location. Seated immediately. Reasonable crowd around noon, moderate conversation noise, "homey" atmosphere. Server, Abigail, was busy, so it took a minute to get out drinks ordered. Food was ordered shortly thereafter. No specific lunch menu. Watching other plates come out before ours, wondered if we should have ordered a sandwich; fries looked fantastic! Side salad with homemade 1000 island was okay. Was expecting more from a homemade dressing; tasted like a dressing off the shelf. Husband's Chicken Alfredo, blackened, was REALLY good. Nice portion. My Chicken & Eggplant Parmesan was okay. Good flavor, but lots of breading and not enough marinara, in my opinion. Portion of bread left something to be desired. Meals were around $17 ea, salad extra. Husband's Coke was refilled, and our check out was speedy. Unsure if there will be a repeat business in the near future, but if we do, we will probably lean away from the Italian. Maybe a sandwich?

Yelp
The food is awesome, everything is great. The service is always on point. The ambiance is reminiscent of a typical Italian restaurant. Where the locals go to eat. Many people order "to go" and pick-up on the way home.

Paul F.

Yelp
Went there with the wife on Friday Night and it was very crowded but we were seated quickly. The service really was fairly good for a busy as they were but that's were everything good came to a stop. l ordered meatballs and spaghetti thinking it had to be good. l was wrong the meatball was cold and the sauce tasted like ketchup. How can a meatball be cold? The wife had ravioli and it was cold and hard. Don't know it was just a bad night but the meal was very unpleasant and we haven't been back.

Steph W.

Yelp
We had the roast beef poboy It was good , but it could've had more roast beef on it for $12 But I guess everything you buy is a ripoff now since Biden took office.

Yelp
Giorlando's Restaurant is one of the oldest Italian restaurants in greater New Orleans and one of the best! We prefer to dine here early to avoid any waiting, but if we must wait it is well worth it. Our favorite starter is the Shrimp, Spinach and Artichoke Bread that is shock and awe delicious. Few restaurants (really none) have ever combined these three items in this manner. Seriously this appetizer is so good you will consider fighting your loving spouse or mom for the last piece of Italian shrimp spinach yumminess! Now let's have a talk about their Lasagna. This is not your mom's Lasanga, unless your mom was born a hundred years ago in the Italian countryside and makes the best lasagna in the world as handed down for generations. I absolutely love the perfectly tenderized Beef Cutlet that is so good that months later you will dream about it and then plan out a day trip / date night to feast on this legendary epic beef & pasta. You can't eat at this restaurant only once, you must make regular pilgrimages as after one visit you will make a lifetime commitment to enjoy everything on the menu. On a side note we always get an order of the old school cannolis to finish up our meal.

Yelp
The food at Giorlando's is really really good. Like all of it! The service is great too! Authentic Italian foods!

Yelp
Hands down the best muffuletta I've had. Our waitress was attentive and communicated well! She reminded me of my auntie loved the family atmosphere.

Yelp
Great food, great service and friendly atmosphere. Italian food with a New Orleans twist, highly recommended

JK L.

Yelp
Best Italian on southshore! The place is old school but the food is absolutely superb along with the service. We were treated like family and will return. Why we passed this place so many times without stopping, I'll never know. You MUST TRY!
google avatar

Anthony W.

Yelp
Absolutely delightful last meal on this trip. The family runs a fantastic restaurant with love flowing out of the service and the food. They have a good quality selection of items and wine. The food was yummy but no amazing. The wine paired perfectly. I loved the ambience of this old school traditional feel. I adored the service and attention to detail. The food quality exceeds the price point and again, if in the area, it's worth stopping in for that oh so special classic experience.

Yelp
I hadn't eaten here in probably 70+ years I've spent in New Orleans now I know why! Don't expect very good Italian food. The red sauce is full of sugar the beef cutlet, not veal, has very little flavor and was overcooked. On the positive side, the Poboys I saw looked very good. It's a traditional good old boy been there for ever diner and it's a nice little place for change. I'd go there again, but I wouldn't order anything Italian.

Maureen G.

Yelp
Service was spot on, we did not wait long for a table. Our server was on point. The food was delicious, I had the Ravioli and could not believe how crunchy on the outside but smooth and creamy in the middle. Everything was perfect and the atmosphere was warm and welcoming.

Alexis C.

Yelp
Service was good I appreciated my server for bringing good energy, the host was trash but the food was good I liked it and nice portions and also good ambiance !

Yelp
Walk back in time as you enter this establishment. You can tell at first glance that this place is a local institution. And I can see what draws them back -the fresh ingredients. The menu consists of simple, home comfort foods like old fashioned meatballs and hamburger steak. One thing about me is if hamburger steak is on the menu -I'm going to order it. It was by far the best bite of the day. Don't believe me? Check out that charred gravy in my photo! I will say that most of the dishes lacked a bit of a salt. But that's an easy fix and we tend to eat on the saltier side. Definitely a place to bring the fam. The staff was more than accommodating and the service was exceptional.
google avatar

Gigi M.

Yelp
Who could rate this restaurant less than five stars. They have some of the best food in the Greater New Orleans area AND the BEST roast beef poboy ANYWHERE! Been coming here for years and always consistent food and incredible service. While my family likes to get italian dishes I cant go far beyond my favorites. Try the fried eggplant -perfect size and lightness. Parking is a hassle but if the lot is full, I park across the street and walk over the median. This is my go-to restaurant for guests.
google avatar

Gina H.

Yelp
This place has been here a long time! A local favorite! We were excited to finally get to eat here. Unfortunately it fell short of our expectations. I read about their "gravy fries" and their roast beef po'boy being so good. Gravy fries with roast beef debris was mushy and not very enjoyable. The flavor of the roast beef debris had decent flavor. My husband said it was just ok, a bit dry. I took a chance on the ravioli because I never had toasted ravioli in sauce. The sauce was not good and I didn't enjoy the toasted ravioli. Odd flavor. It wasn't for me. The staff was friendly and was a happy environment. They told us about the white chocolate cheesecake. For me, it was ok, my husband thought it was good. For the staff & the cheesecake is the 3 stars.

Yelp
A great old style Italian restaurant! The shrimp brioche appetizer was excellent, as was the shrimp ravioli entree.. But I really went for the baked muffeletta!! Layers of meat and cheese, topped with the traditional olive salad.... And BAKED!! Gooey cheese and the olive oil soaked into the warm sesame seed bread..... Mmmmmmmmm!!!!!

Carlos M.

Yelp
The food is amazing, and the service is great. Wonderful ambiance everything I have eaten is delicious and will order it again.
google avatar

Lana M.

Yelp
Good amazing and affordable.. service is well trained employees that make the experience fun and definitely comfortable.. the ambiance is exactly what makes the place work . The hostess is absolutely adorable and she is so hospitable. She is always aware of the restaurant and make the customer feel good . Love it !! Mich Pie . Is the best along the other staff .
google avatar

Laurie B.

Yelp
All of the food we've eaten here has been delicious! I especially love their ribeye steak. It comes out sizzling on a very hot plate and is seasoned/buttered perfectly to my liking!

Kevin W.

Yelp
Great family restaurant. Very good chicken parmigiana. Staff is very friendly and prompt
google avatar

Krystal H.

Yelp
The roast beef po-boy was really good! The flavor was really on point! I was skeptical about pickles on it but it was phenomenal and really added to the flavor!

Sharon H.

Yelp
I was sitting at the bar @ Giorlando's. Had Eggplant with Angel Hair Pasta! Delicious but lost my appetite when the only guy behind the bar put his deodorant on. I asked him you always keep that back there and he said yes. Told the girl who waited on me what he done but don't know if she said anything to management.
google avatar

Joan H.

Yelp
Great food and superb service. I'd love to come back if I'm nearby for work again. Thanks so much for an authentic Louisiana meal. Louisiana has the best food in the country.
google avatar

Yelp
Delicious family owned restaurant! A gem in Metairie that you've probably passed 1000 times. Service and food are amazing! Limited parking in lot but plenty of street parking. Older crowd.

John L.

Yelp
This is a great little italian place. It's pretty dark and old school, but you can tell it caters to the older crowd. My good was very good, though.

Yelp
I was traveling on business and stopped by this neighborhood restaurant. I ordered the BEEF CUTLET, freshly tenderized round steaks breaded then fried, served with a choice of one side. I got the angel hair pasta with Alfredo sauce - $13.99. The portion was large and the cutlet was way over cooked. It was definitely not lightly fried (see photo). Since nobody came by to check on me until I was almost finished, I was not able to send the food back, so I ate the burnt food anyway. The check was delivered and I was not offered any desert or anything else, that surprised me. I felt like I was in the way and they would have been happy if I just left. I was dining alone so I was able to sit at the bar. They have a full liquor license and have a nice variety of wines. The place was established in 1972 so the interior is original and a bit dated but I think that adds some charm to this local establishment. Bailey, my waitress and a 3rd generation Giorlando, was very pleasant and helped me to make my selection. I wish she was more attentive. When she did eventually come to check on me. She apologized for not coming over sooner. I showed her how my food was over cooked and she said she will tell someone. With so many choices for good restaurants in the area, I am not sure if I will get back to Giorlando's in the future.
google avatar

Paul S.

Yelp
This is not only a long standing tradition, but a can't miss lunch spot in Metairie. From huge Poboy's on there special bread to the plate lunch specials you can't miss... roast beef and home cooked chips are a good bet!
google avatar

Claudia B.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I stopped in today for a valentine's day dinner and it was the first time we had ever been and it exceeded my expectations. I didn't want to go to an italian chain and preferred to do something local and it was the right choice. The restaurant was cute and quaint and has family photos posted around. I got blackened chicken alfredo and it was amazingly delicious, creamy, flavorful and felt very homey. We got a few other things and all of them were good, we couldn't stop raving to each other about how good it all was. Parking was practically full except for two spots which made us think we weren't even going to be able to get a table but that was not the case. Chris took great care of us and we never had to ask for a refill. I believe we found our new go-to italian spot.

Janis B.

Yelp
The food was delicious and the staff was wonderful. The environment is comfortable and relaxed. We can't wait to go back. I highly recommend this restaurant.
google avatar

Jamie B.

Yelp
Do alot of people know about this place? I am not sure, but they should. Everytime I come here I get great service and food at great prices and I want everyone to know. Maybe they aren't well known because they are not open on the weekends, but with such great food and a following, there is no need to be. This is a multi generational restaurant and you feel like family when you arrive. This last time came I ordered the chicken parmesan. It comes with two sauces: red gravy and alfredo. The chicken rests on top of a large portion of angel hair pasta. The portions here are huge. The last time I came, I ordered the lasagna and it was great. I have had their fried onion rings that are thick and full of batter. You always end up taking a go box home. They offer beer and wine here if you would like some alcohol. They also have great appetizers. I have never left this place hungry or unhappy. The parking lot is kind of small and if you get here past 6pm, you risk them running out of popular dishes like daube. Expect excellent service and to be truely treated like family here.

Jennifer H.

Yelp
Very disappointed in the service received today. While most of the food was good, my elderly father's food was partly inedible. When brought to their attention, the manager came to our table and ripped apart the meat with her hands asking why he could not eat it, very unprofessional and rude. He simply asked for a different meat in its place and she still asked why he couldn't eat it. He explained it was very tough and too salty. She had an attitude and then her and the server, Chris, ignored him the rest of the service, including not filling his ice tea that he paid for. Although when it was time to pay Chris had no problem dropping the bill in front of my father, next to his empty tea glass that was not filled once. My father just had heart surgery and never gets out. This was a very upsetting experience and very uncalled for situation from this manager.

Yelp
This place was amazing. My friends and I are traveling in a van right now, so we grabbed some dinner to-go, and it was so good! I got the blackened chicken fettuccine Alfredo which was amazing, and I got the banana foster cheesecake which was PHENOMENAL. My friends thoroughly enjoyed their dinner as well. And it is very reasonably priced. Will definitely be back!
google avatar

Melissa A.

Yelp
Amazing food! So glad I finally tried Giorlando's after passing it for years. I will definitely be back! And the staff was extremely friendly and welcoming.

Nicholas T.

Yelp
Food was delicious great service authentic Italian dishes. Highly recommended. Great Ambience

Leon L.

Yelp
I have now seen it all! The relationship between restauranteurs and patrons seems to have changed..it used to be a customer was provided a menu complete with prices and made his choices and agreeing to pay that price. Not today! After I politely pointed out the discrepancy to the waitress, she summoned the manager who explained that food costs had risen and new menus were on order and point to a hand written sign saying specifically that chicken and meat prices had risen and management could raise menu prices. My lunch which by the way was delicious, was calimari and a side of fettuccine....no meat or chicken. My complaint is not solely with this restaurant but really changes in the industry itself..Restaurants it seems to m e expect more from their customers..from suggestions for outrageous tips, even for counter pick ups and charges to pay kitchen help.My complaint is with an attitude of restaurants toward their PATRONS! I know that I am not alone and I regret that the straw that broke this camel's back was this place. Giving someone a menu with prices and then charging an arbitrary increase could cause way more problems than anyone could imagine! Please consider having the printer expedite new menus.
google avatar

Bryant M.

Yelp
You won't regret eating over here. Old school Italian and po- boys definitely a winner

Rowley R.

Yelp
One of the best Italian spots I've ever been. This place has a great family vibe. While delivering fantastic food. I got the chicken parm. The eggplant parm. Both excellent. Everyone I go with always loves their food.

David E.

Yelp
I've lived in New Orleans since 1974. This place has the best roast beef poboy I have ever eaten.

Christina O.

Yelp
I had heard so much about this place, but unfortunately, I was very disappointed. The food was bland, they were skimpy with the sauce, and the wine list was almost nonexistent. When we asked for a wine/cocktail list the server said "oh it's been messed up since covid, so tell me what you want and I'll tell you if we have it" and most of what we asked for she said they didn't have. I ordered chicken parm which could have been tasty if it would have been seasoned better. My husband ordered the blackened fish which he found bland. Our server was energetic and polite, but not very attentive. Unfortunately, we were not impressed. Giorlando's is definitely not one of Metairie's best.
google avatar

Angela S.

Yelp
Probably the best Italian I've had in a long while locally. The red sauce is the best. Had the chicken and eggplant parm. The eggplant was thin and well cooked and the chicken tender. The calamari was good too. Husband had the lasagna and my daughter had the eggplant parm. My husband could not say enough about the red sauce. We will be going back often.
google avatar

Russel H.

Yelp
So I had to fast for a procedure and was starving so I decided to treat myself and Ordered a large oyster poboy today. It tasted good but for $17 dollars you expect more than 7 oysters.
google avatar

Kate D.

Yelp
Giorlando's is the definition of a family run restaurant. The owners are always there watching over things, and not only that they actually care about their employees including their families. Plus they treat the regulars as family and often actually know most of the members of those families. It's just a really cool thing when the age we live in is so disconnected, or seems to be. Onto the food.... The food here is great. I don't remember one time where I was disappointed in the food. Over the years I've had appetizers, and many different entrées. I love the debris fries. For those of you not from New Orleans debris fries are French fries with cheese and roast beef gravy. I also think the salads here are excellent. They have so many items to choose from and you can't go wrong. If you decide to try it I hope you like it as much as I do. One last thing to note is that they are closed on the weekends. Sometimes it sucks because it would be a nice place to go on a Saturday for a meal. Just remember like I said in the beginning it's the definition of a family run restaurant and closed for family time on weekends. So, get your fill during the weekdays.
google avatar

Richard G.

Yelp
This restaurant is awesome, food and service is great. We go often and have try a lot of different item on menu and always been excellent from some as simple as a club sandwich to spaghetti & meatball to Ribeye steak. Oh and the Gumbo is delicious
google avatar

Diem P.

Yelp
This is probably one of my favorite pasta place, it's a family owned restaurant and their portion sizes are huge. I normally ordered the chicken Alfredo for $14.95. Everyone is really sweet there, too. It's always crowded but you never to have to too long to be seated. The parking lot is kindaa crazy, but you wilL eventually find parking.
google avatar

Steve I.

Yelp
The location is really not ideal (in a small corner with terrible access) but the food is. Love the po-boys here. The bread is what separates their po-boys from others. The bbq beef is just right. The roast beef po-boy is one of the best in the city. Get the homemade potato chips instead of the fries. They are served right out of the fryer and are seasoned perfectly. The lasagna and meatalls and spaghetti are delicious too! Not many Italian restaurants in NOLA are comparable to Giorlando's IMO besides Cafe Nino and Irene's.
google avatar

Tamia G.

Yelp
This is a family style restaurant with quite dated décor, which was likely all the rage in the 70's, like bell-bottoms. Yet, it is neat and clean. The menu is quite extensive and includes several appetizers, salads, pasta dishes (naturally), steaks, seafood, sandwiches (including a muffulletta) and desserts. They have a limited bar, featuring only a few spirits and either Kendall Jackson or Blackstone wines. The staff is nice, especially the hostess Raney and my waitress Kristie E. I really enjoyed their shrimp, artichoke & spinach bread. It's fresh, gooey mozzarella goodness atop 4 points of perfectly toasted brioche. $6.95.

Paul S.

Yelp
Fantastic food, great meatballs. But very little pasta is served with the meal. Maybe they were running out of pasta. Other than that the food quality was excellent
