The 31 Best Restaurants in Kolkata (Calcutta), India | Eater

"In his book Sweet Invention, historian Michael Krondl calls Nakur the prince among Bengal’s moira, or traditional confectioners. The 177-year-old shop, located in a quiet north Kolkata neighborhood, is revered in the city for its sandesh, a genre of Bengali artisanal sweetmeat made with fresh chhana. The shop has innovated and expanded its repertoire of sandesh to include a mind-boggling variety of flavors, including mango, dark chocolate, mulberry, black currant, butterscotch, and so many more." - Priyadarshini Chatterjee

Girish Chandra Dey & Nakur Chandra Nandy in Hedua is a legendary sweet shop in Kolkata, best known for its sandesh. Their jol bhora is iconic – a delicate sandesh with liquid gur or syrup inside that bursts in your mouth. It’s been their signature sweet for generations and still remains unmatched. Along with that, they offer a wide range of traditional sandesh like korapak, nolen gurer sandesh and many seasonal varieties, all rich, fresh and full of authentic flavor. The shop is small and almost always crowded, especially during festive times, so a little patience is needed. Prices are slightly higher than regular sweet shops, but considering the legacy and the quality, it feels justified. If you want a true taste of Bengali sweets, especially the legendary jol bhora, this shop is an absolute must visit. It’s a piece of Kolkata’s food history.

My first visit here! I had heard a lot about this place and it truly lives up to the reputation. They don’t have any branches – this is the authentic spot for Bengali sweets. The shop is always crowded, which says a lot about its popularity. You can even watch the sweets being made fresh inside. There’s a huge variety of Sandesh to choose from, and the jol bhora is simply outstanding. A must-visit for anyone who loves traditional Bengali sweets!

An Unmatched Legacy of Bengali Sweets! Girish Ch. Dey & Nakur Ch. Nandy is a living legend in the heart of North Kolkata. One of the city’s oldest and most celebrated sweet shops, this place is nothing short of a cultural landmark. The moment you step in, you’re greeted not just by the aroma of fresh sweets, but by over 175 years of unmatched tradition and excellence. Their Butterscotch Sandesh is a genius twist on a classic—creamy, subtle, and unforgettable. The Malai Roll is rich, indulgent, and melts in the mouth, while the legendary Jol Bhora still amazes with its burst of liquid sweetness inside. The Kacha Golla, soft and delicate, is a testament to how simplicity can be divine. And don’t miss the unique Ice Cream Sandesh—a delightful fusion that wins over every generation. Every item here is made with the finest ingredients and utmost love. It’s no wonder generations of Kolkatans keep coming back, and visitors make it a point to carry a box home. Service is quick and courteous despite the crowd—testimony to the staff’s dedication and efficiency. A visit to Nakur is not just about sweets—it’s about reliving Kolkata’s soul. A must-visit for anyone who wants to experience the true taste of Bengal. 🍬❤️

During our recent visit to Calcutta, we took the effort to visit this popular and famous shop to buy authentic Bengali sweets. We could see the traditional way how they are managing the business. The sweets they make are really superb.

A nostalgic and very famous must-try sweet shop in North Kolkata — you can even spot a photo of Shah Rukh Khan there. In fact, the sweets were also provided at Abhishek Bachchan's wedding.

Established way back in 1844, Girish Chandra Dey and Nakur Chandra Nandy is another famous sweet shop that is still a crowd-puller. It was founded by Mahesh Chandra Dey and was later taken over by his son Girish Chandra Dey. Later Girish’s only son-in-law Nakur Chandra Nandy took charge of the shop and since then the shop has been named as Girish Chandra Dey and Nakur Chandra Nandy. A pioneer in making sandesh, the shop continues to operate from the same place and is still quite popular. Whether you have a sweet tooth or not, you must visit this shop in north Kolkata. While the varieties of sandesh will take you by surprise, items like chocolate malai roll, rice ball and choco toofan are must-have. Do try jolbhora, Sourav sandesh, chocolate Sachin and mulberry sandesh, to name a few.

Established in 1844, this is not just one of the oldest sweet shops in Kolkata but also one of its most iconic. Over the years, it has built a reputation for serving some of the finest Sondesh in the city, a sweet that is at the heart of Kolkata's culinary identity. In fact, they have served their Sondesh to almost all the famous celebrities of India, which speaks volumes about their legacy. What makes this shop truly special is the way it has preserved both tradition and quality for nearly two centuries. The highlight here is undoubtedly the legendary Nolen Gurer Jol Bhora Sondesh - a delicate sweet stuffed with liquid jaggery, available mostly during the winter season when the finest date palm jaggery is harvested. It is soft, perfectly balanced in sweetness, and bursts with flavor in every bite. Honestly though, it’s not just the Jol Bhora but almost every sweet here is just amazing. But what makes this shop stand apart is not just the sweets, but also its history. Nakur Chandra Nandi, who came from Hooghly district, married into the family of Girish Chandra Dey, a renowned sweet maker of his time. Together, they began making and selling sweets under the name Girish Chandra Dey & Nakur Chandra Nandy, which has since become legendary in Kolkata’s food culture. Stepping into this shop feels like stepping into history, a place where tradition, taste, and heritage come together. If you want to experience the authentic soul of Kolkata’s sweets, this is a destination you simply cannot miss.
