The 31 Best Restaurants in Kolkata (Calcutta), India | Eater

"In his book Sweet Invention, historian Michael Krondl calls Nakur the prince among Bengal’s moira, or traditional confectioners. The 177-year-old shop, located in a quiet north Kolkata neighborhood, is revered in the city for its sandesh, a genre of Bengali artisanal sweetmeat made with fresh chhana. The shop has innovated and expanded its repertoire of sandesh to include a mind-boggling variety of flavors, including mango, dark chocolate, mulberry, black currant, butterscotch, and so many more." - Priyadarshini Chatterjee

Framed by solemn white pillars and guarded by an iron gate, Girish & Nakur stands at 56, Ramdulal Sarkar Street with a commanding presence—like a relic gently preserved from the pages of history. Revered for its extraordinary range of sondesh, the counters are adorned with timeless classics: Chandrapuli, Gurer Jolbhora, Gurer Monohora, Talsash, Chocolate Singara, and the iconic Sachin Sondesh—a few among many that I had the pleasure of tasting. In an era crowded with competition and changing tastes, Girish & Nakur has remained unwavering, refusing to dilute its essence. Its devotion to sondesh has never wavered, and that quiet consistency is perhaps its greatest strength. Behind the unassuming façade lies not merely a sweet shop, but a sanctum of memory—a place where generations have surrendered to their cravings, where sweetness is not just sold but woven into the cultural fabric of Bengal. For 181 years, this institution has stood as a testament to tradition, patience, and purity of craft. Visiting Girish & Nakur is not just about tasting sweets; it is about experiencing history—one delicate bite at a time.

One of the best if not the best sweet shop in Kolkata. It's so popular that full plates of sweets runs out while you are in line and you have to wait for the next best to come out. They are literally making the sweets in the back while the front shop sells out. Best recommendation are Manohara, Kachaholla, Jalbhara. There are also many other types of sweets to try out all of which are dry sweets.

This has to be the go to place for delving into classic Bengali sweets such as Sandesh. Established in 1844, they have been delivered the tastiest sweets to Kolkata and attracting people from all over the globe. Even the lane down to the shop reminds you of the old retro Calcutta, with minimal impact of modernization. I had tried the following sweets: 1. Nolen Gur 2. Butterscotch 3. Jolbhora 4. Chocolate 5. Malai role 6. Kanchagolla Loved it.

Established in 1844, Legacy of Bengali Sweets! Girish Ch. Dey & Nakur Ch. Nandy is a living legend in the heart of North Kolkata. This is not just one of the oldest sweet shops in Kolkata it also one of it's most iconic. The moment you step in, you're greeted not just by the aroma of fresh sweets, but by over 175 years of unmatched tradition and excellence. They have traditional as well fusion sweets. They have strawberry, blueberry, mango, chocolate, kiwi, green apple, orange to name a few modern fusions. From traditional sweets one can have Malai Roll, Sorer Singara, Mohini, Jolbhora. Their Butterscotch Sandesh is a genius twist on a classic-creamy, subtle, and unforgettable. The Malai Roll is rich, indulgent, and melts in the mouth, while the legendary Jol Bhora still amazes with its burst of liquid sweetness inside. The Kacha Golla, soft and delicate, is a testament to how simplicity can be divine. And don't miss the unique Ice Cream Sandesh-a delightful fusion that wins over every generation. In winter they have some special sweets which I love like Gurer Sandesh, Gurer Makha Sandesh, Gurer Kachagolla, Janai style Gurer Monohora. Nolen Gur in different size containers are also sold. But what makes this shop stand apart is not just the sweets, but also its history. Nakur Chandra Nandi, who came from Hooghly district, married into the family of Girish Chandra Dey, a renowned sweet maker of his time. Together, they began making and selling sweets under the name Girish Chandra Dey & Nakur Chandra Nandy, which has since become legendary in Kolkata's food culture. Service is quick and courteous despite the crowd -testimony to the staff's dedication and efficiency. Must-visit for anyone who wants to experience the true taste of Bengal. Thank you Girish Ch. Dey & Nakur Ch. Nandy. 🙏🏻🙂

Revered as it is for the myriad variety of sondesh, one sees them dotted in front of the shop: Chandrapuli, Gurer Jolbhora, Gurer Monohora, Talsash, Chocolate Singara, Sachin Sondesh - to name a few I tasted. Despite the surge of competition, Girish & Nakur has remained steadfast, refusing to dilute its soul as it has never strayed far from its devotion to sondesh. Behind its unassuming façade lies not just a shop, but a sanctum where generations (now for 181 years to be precise) have surrendered their cravings, where sweetness has been woven into the fabric of Bengali memory.

Girish Chandra Dey & Nakur Chandra Nandy in Hedua is a legendary sweet shop in Kolkata, best known for its sandesh. Their jol bhora is iconic – a delicate sandesh with liquid gur or syrup inside that bursts in your mouth. It’s been their signature sweet for generations and still remains unmatched. Along with that, they offer a wide range of traditional sandesh like korapak, nolen gurer sandesh and many seasonal varieties, all rich, fresh and full of authentic flavor. The shop is small and almost always crowded, especially during festive times, so a little patience is needed. Prices are slightly higher than regular sweet shops, but considering the legacy and the quality, it feels justified. If you want a true taste of Bengali sweets, especially the legendary jol bhora, this shop is an absolute must visit. It’s a piece of Kolkata’s food history.

Google
Famous sweet shop in Kolkata, best for its Talshah (Kara pak sweets). Gurer misti is too good here. Now a days they are making various sweets with different flavours like chocolate, strawberry, green, yellow ...I think now a days mainly north indian of Kolkata like those kind of sweets hence they are making that kind of sweets which I don't prefer. But taste wise those are also good.
