Trendy outdoor Mexican eatery & bar with lively events & a palm-studded seating area on the bay.
"Gitano Island, a brand-new restaurant and beach club, opened its doors on Governors Island. The waterfront property offers 27,000 square feet of amenities reminiscent of a Tulum beach, including hundreds of plants, giant palms, 350 tons of imported sand, a restaurant, Bedouin dining tent, 360-degree marble bar, dining pergolas, open-fire kitchen, sunbeds, cabanas, and a members-only lounge with a 40-foot water feature. It hosts international DJs and live performances. The modern Mexican restaurant, led by executive chef Antonio Maldonado, features dishes like chorizo con queso, crab tostadas, branzino in banana leaf, and new additions like Mexican lobster roll and crispy chicken al Recado Rojo. Chef Jose Luis Hinostroza collaborates with a taco tasting menu. It offers a curated cocktail list and bottle service." - Travel + Leisure Editors
"I don’t actually remember much about my first experience at Gitano—the original location in Tulum, about four years ago—but knowing me, that means it was a damn good night. So when I found out that the bar and restaurant would be coming to New York, I was eager to see how it would translate. Founder and co-owner James Gardner did not disappoint: The downtown space took over a 24,000-square-foot lot and transformed it into a tropical oasis in the middle of Manhattan. I’m headed back for more mezcal and watermelon and tomato salad doused with sweet-and-spicy chile sauce (pictured)." - ByAndy Baraghani
