The Best Things We Ate This Week

"Dish: Hatch, New Mexico green chili burger The green chili burger at this Dogpatch breakfast spot is a strong candidate for our best burgers list. It’s a monstrosity and arrives on the table open-faced with the green chili coating the burger, sloppy joe-style. The messiness and size make eating the entire thing feel like an impossible feat. But once you accept that your hands will get dirty, this burger will hook you. The meat is juicy and the bun is fluffy, but they play second fiddle to the zingy hatch chili sauce—its kick immediately wakes the tongue up. Sign us up for a loyalty card, we’ll be back for this soon. " - julia chen 1, ricky rodriguez

12 Spots To Eat Alongside The SF Marathon Route

"One of the few options open early enough in the Dogpatch is Giuliana’s Just For You Cafe. This casual brunch spot decorated in road signs is best for stuffing your face with beignets, scrambles, and the mess-in-the-best-way-possible Hatch chili burger. Because the crowds usually thin out around the Dogpatch, the wait shouldn’t be too bad." - julia chen 1, lani conway, ricky rodriguez, patrick wong

Giuliana’s Just For You Cafe - Review - Dogpatch - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"Giuliana’s Just For You Cafe is the incarnation of Just For You Cafe in the Dogpatch—and not much has changed. It’s the same cozy brunch spot with an Americana feel (street signs and movie posters hang on the walls). Plus, it’s got the same menu of brunch classics like big scrambles, beignets, and their famed hangtown fry. The beignets are light and fluffy (get it with chocolate sauce), and the hangtown fry is a crispy oyster-filled staple. Overall the food gets the job done, but there isn’t anything we’d send you out of your way for—the eggs benedict is forgettable, the pancakes are OK, and the breakfast burrito is dry. But if you find yourself in the Dogpatch craving basic egg dishes and beignets then this is the place." - Ricky Rodriguez

Burger burrito - 4/5 very heavy and filling, would be even better with more acidic flavor profile, I ate mine with ketchup My friend liked the house made chips Casual diner vibe. Bathroom is nice

Google
Solid breakfast / brunch and lunch in Dogpatch. Breakfast Burrito options abound, with modifications to personalize to just right. New Mexican Hatch chilis available. An excellent diner with subtle nautical themes. Very clean bathrooms. Very friendly, and attentive, service. Bar and sidewalk seating options available.

Gets bustling during the weekends and on Friday mornings! Quick and very friendly service. Nice neighborhood spot. Food tastes as expected. It's a good spot for a low key brunch with friends!

Excellent homemade corned beef hash. Attentive service came with plenty of refills on water and coffee. fried oysters were great as well.

We were so happy to hear that the famous Just for You Cafe is back open under new ownership. We went on a Friday during lunch and were able to get a seat pretty quickly. There's also outdoor seating. We went with the basics to see if things were the same. We ordered the beignets - three-ways - and it was heavenly. We also split an omelette that was big enough for two people. Everything felt pretty much the same. Service was attentive, and we didn't feel rushed. I'm glad the neighborhood has their cafe back!

Google
It's one of my favorite breakfast spots in SF. I'm so happy this place is open again. The food is still delicious. I came last weekend for breakfast. Then, the next day for my birthday (Super Bowl Sunday) then brought some family members on Monday. Everyone is so nice and inviting.

Google
Cute cafe in Dogpatch good for a casual morning breakfast! The food was good and the portions were standard. Everything was a little overpriced, but the service was really great and super friendly.

Google
The food was fabulous and our waiter was just about perfectly opinionated about what was best on the menu and what to customize. The beignets are delicious and so were the chicken & waffles and the rueben. Worth the wait, and I hate waiting.

Yelp
I came in with my work team of 10. The service was impeccable - attentive, quick, and kind. All drinks and orders were placed immediately, carafes of water were on the table, and plenty of settings and utensils. The food was delicious and filling. I ordered the Vinnie Benedict - crab cake eggs benedict - and I opted for corn bread and cheesy grits ($1.50+). I like that you can choose what bread type you would like your benedict - english muffin, toast, corn bread, etc. The cheesy grits came out hot, mixed in the shredded cheese on top and it was almost like I was back down South! The Vinnie benedict was delicious - flavorful crab cake, the house hollandaise was a great complement, and the corn bread was soo nice to pair. I am very much so a savory-sweet person so it was having the best of both worlds! They had accidentally included the house potatoes, which i was very grateful for later - perfectly crisp and well seasoned. My colleague next to me got the Big Scramble with cornbread and house potatoes. All clean and empty plates after!

Yelp
This was our first time back after the closure and the new owners. We grabbed a seat outside since we had our furbaby and ordered. The staff was very friendly and the seating outside was perfect for the weather. 3/4 Crab eggs Benedict with fries - crab seems a bit salty for my liking. The fries that came with it was very good. Asked for a side if mayo and they charged $.50! What a surprise... pretty shocked and disappointed with that. I know it's not a huge amount but condiments should be free IMO. 5/5 Crispy chicken sandwich - so good. Chicken was fried but very moist in a ciabatta bread. Loved it. 4/5 Beignets - got them three different ways. With powdered sugar, powdered sugar and chocolate drizzle, and cinnamon sugar mix. Chocolate drizzle with powdered sugar was my fave. I think strawberry topping and cream cheese topping could be a nice add to menu options. I wound recommend but can't get over the $.50 charge for mayo. I mean shouldn't it come as a side for my chicken sandwich??!

Yelp
Where was the gravy? We asked for gravy instead of hollandaise on the fried chicken Benedict. They put a teaspoons worth. Disappointing. Service was good. Folks were super nice as we entered and left. I like that they offered me to take my last round of coffee to-go. Place is small inside but is big for the beignets. I passed. My plate was pretty good and I especially liked the soft yummy potatoes I'd be willing to try again for lunch instead of breakfast

Yelp
I want to love the new JFY as much as the old one, but I just can't quite do it. The menu is almost exactly the same (controversial, since the new owners didn't actually purchase from the old, and instead swooped in after the old owners shut down), but flavors just don't seem as bright or strong as they used to be. Portion sizes are down, and prices are up (to be fair, this may have saved the business had the previous owners done this), and there are a few things we really miss, like they no longer sell their own bread. Beignets are still delicious, and they still offer the pint-sized mimosas (though a regular glass size is now the default). And don't get me wrong, the food is is still _good_, just perhaps not _great_. I was also really pleased that they were able to re-hire much of the original staff (at least front of house, not sure about back). The new cloth napkins are a nice touch, too.

Yelp
Highly recommend. Great service, unlimited coffee, and they are willing to take custom orders (I wanted a simple scrambled egg sandwich with tomato).

Yelp
This place is super close to where we live so I was excited when this opened up! Good: - Open super early so came here for breakfast - Liked the avocado toast here, it was okay and you could choose any egg style you wanted! The portion sizes were good but I couldn't finish my dish. Bad: - The prices were a little more expensive - Not as much service since it's super casual Overall enjoyed being here for a fast and easy breakfast near me! I might order something else next time though since i wasn't the biggest fan of avocado toast.

Yelp
It's just not the same. The coffee was that sour and bitter kind which was disappointing. The florentine was okay. The mushrooms were ice cold while the rest of the veggies were warm and my eggs were overcooked. Seasoning was lacking throughout. The veggies were under salted. We got a fried chicken Benedict which also had an overcooked poached eggs. The fried chicken didn't have much color or crispness to it-- just kind of like a grilled chicken Benedict. The beignets were still good though which is probably the most important part!

Yelp
Giuliana's continues the flavor, friendliness, and legacy of the old Just For You. Kitchen staff, menu, and a lot of the wait staff is the same. It was and is still one of my favorite restaurants in the city. This is where you go when you want amazing diner food and friendly service. This is my happy spot.

Yelp
Oh how we had wanted Giuliana's to be somewhat like their dearly departed predecessor, Just For You. Alas, it was not to be. This refers to March 2024. Coffee was sour and undrinkable. Even after adding enough cream to cool it down to lukewarm, it was so bad. We used to love the JFY Community Coffee and drink way too much on every visit. At $3.75, coffee should be drinkable. We ordered a Greek Scramble and The Big Scramble. Each was oddly flavorless, so we had to douse them with several hot sauces. The Big's side of chicken apple sausage was sliced and mixed in, but wasn't hot. The shredded cheese on top wasn't warm or melted. Strange. We each ordered biscuits with our breakfasts. They were salty, and this was made worse by salted butter. The home fries were crispy and very good! Whew. I wanted to like something ...anything! While the menu contains items that you'll recognize from the JFY menu, the execution was just not there. At all. We felt so cheated, spending $50 for two not-even-mediocre breakfasts. The restroom is nicely remodeled. The seating area was always loud, but is it possible that it's even louder? A few loud tables mean that everyone else starts to yell. At least on our visit it was painfully loud - enough to require lip-reading as our primary form of communication. I truly hope they can improve. Dogpatch needs a good and unpretentious place to eat simple yet well-prepared breakfasts and lunches. I know it's hard to follow in the footsteps of someplace that was so good for so many years, but they're cutting corners not training the kitchen staff on execution. Overall, they just don't seem to have a handle on how the food is supposed to taste. We briefly considered ordering the beignets, for old time's sake, but didn't want to be disappointed at yet another turn for the worse. We may return in a year or two, if they survive that long, to see if they have figured it out. But we certainly don't feel like rolling the dice at Giuliana's anytime soon.

Yelp
I love this place. Where else can you get perfectly sautéed fresh veggies with your omelette and biscuit? Nowhere that's where. Flavors are full and everything is seasoned perfectly. Nice staff and easy ordering system. I take it to go usually but on nice days I have enjoyed dining outside. Prices for homemade high quality eats are very good. Oh and have the beignets.

Yelp
So glad that just for you is back in business, and with many of the same staff people. Excellent place for breakfast, lunch, and brunch. Killer juevos rancheros.

Yelp
Make sure, if you're in Dogpatch, that you eat breakfast here. If you live in Potrero Hill you know. Everything is great here.

Yelp
We arrived at Giuliana's around 10:30 am mid week. This little coffee shop was easy to get seated. The waitresses were friendly and helpful. They served coffee to us in a short time and suggested items to us to try. We ordered breakfast and lunch meals. The food was serve to us in 10 minutes. Our meals were nicely presented and warm. Coffee refills came as needed. The atmosphere was good and relatively quiet with 5 groups of patrons here. We would return again. Professor51

Yelp
The is is my first time here since it has changed ownership and I was pleasantly surprised that the food quality and service is just as wonderful as it's always been! Highlights - menu is almost exactly the same and the food I got was cooked to perfection! - the bathroom decor has been revamped and it is so cute!!! - the servers are the same friendly faces I remember which was reassuring Areas of improvement - no gluten free bread options - the interior decor is lacking All in all this place is still one of my favorite brunch spots in the bay! So happy that new ownership has kept the recipes and staff!

Yelp
Super cool staff and the food was amazing! Get the Veggie Rubin -- crab sandwich was a little dry but good -- coleslaw is excellent!!

Yelp
Just for You has re-opened and brought back the original staff. I've been back for breakfast and it has been really good.

Yelp
Amazing food, professional, polite service, great location. It was a great Sunday brunch spot, even though we went Saturday.

Yelp
great brunch spot, i love the cowboy! there are so many options on the menu, there's something for everyone here. the interior is supposedly what inspired the setting of the restaurant of bob's burgers. overall amazing service, such nice waiters & lots of options for brunch.

Yelp
I'm glad that Just For You Cafe is able to keep going. I don't know what it is, but it's missing that je ne sais quoi that the previous incarnation had. Food is still delicious. I'll still go back just without the zeal I had for it before the new owners. Service was acceptable, and the ambiance is more plain than I was hoping for.
google avatar

Yelp
Popped in here yesterday for lunch when the Italian place around the corner was ignoring the customers on the waiting list even though there were empty tables. I had the shrimp and grits with cornbread. Having been to South Carolina and Georgia many times, I've had genuine shrimp and grits and this wasn't bad! It wasn't great, but it wasn't bad. It's a huge portion (I should have taken a photo) so I probably didn't even get through half of it. Very cheesy but the cheese isn't baked into the grits - it's on top. The cornbread was delicious. I got the beignets with powdered sugar to go and was really excited to try them but they flew off my car seat and onto the floor when I had to brake for a dog running into the street so I never got to eat them unfortunately (the dog was fine!). I'd love to go back and try the chicken and waffles. The service was great - everyone in here was super helpful and lovely.

Yelp
Me and my parents always come here, like ALWAYS! Service is amazing, we are easily recognized every time. The food is always so good! The scenery is also nice, and the inside is nice and cold, sometimes I don't like it, but I always go when its warm. I definitely recommend the N.I.C.E Caesar Salad and the Chicken and Waffles, SO FREAKING GOOD!

Gina C.

Yelp
The food was great, service was excellent and place reminded me of an old school diner. Great coffee

Yelp
The restaurant is very nice, has a good energy to it. The service they provide is excellent and the food is amazing.

Yelp
Food is on point. So happy to have this place back open in the neighborhood! Get the Philly sandwich!

Colleen F.

Yelp
Very good food and service. We had Italian frittata with potatoes and biscuits & gravy with eggs. Biscuits were home made. Could have come with more gravy. Very noisy indoors but made for a fun atmosphere.
google avatar

Michelle Z.

Yelp
Great breakfast spot. Have tried their scrambles, breakfast burritos, and French toast. Highly recommend their scrambles and breakfast burritos! You can pick a side and I always get the cornbread. It's very buttery and tasty ;) you won't walk away hungry that's for sure! Coffee is decent as well!

Denise A.

Yelp
Ordered the crab cake with eggs and chicken benedict - the presentation looked really sad. The food came out within 5mins and it was pretty cold. The home fries were horrible, as it felt like it was sitting out from the day before. The crab cake was okay, but it also felt like it was reheated. And the chicken benedict had no flavor, even with the batter.

Ashley T.

Yelp
The biscuits and gravy tasted soooo good! The orange juice was fresh and reasonably priced. Overall, a great spot for brunch.

Yelp
I had the pleasure to dine at this popular neighborhood favorite this past Saturday (1/13/24) with my three nieces. This gem of a diner is located in the Dogpatch neighborhood on 23rd St at Third in San Francisco's Potrero Hill district. The food and the service was exceptional. Chris, one of many welcoming friendly servers that made our dining experience most pleasurable is my new adopted nephew. The food is served hot, fresh and with generous proportions. I had the B. L. A. T. sandwich with country fried potatoes. My sandwich was delicious and the taters are to die for with just the right balance of crispy char on them. Stop by the next time you're in the area. Tell Chris "Auntie Nita" said hello

Bouquet o.

Yelp
I DEFINITELY recommend the beignets. They're fluffy, and the perfect ratio of beignet to sugar. The woman who waited on us was kind, accommodating, and very sweet. We went when it was a bit crowded, but I've been when it's basically empty and it has a very comfortable, homey feeling. For non dessert foods, I had the Florentine Benedict, wasn't my thing, but that's just because I wanted to try something new and I learned hollandaise wasn't my thing. The home fries were wonderful. The poached egg was cooked perfectly, and the added vegetables were great.

christina r.

Yelp
Just as good as the original! Best breakfast spot by far. This place is a San Francisco icon and has the best beignets around!

Dale S.

Yelp
Just for You Cafe has reopened as Giuliana's Just for You Cafe. Just for You has long been a staple of the Potrero/Dogpatch area and served as inspiration for the show Bob's Burgers. So when news dropped earlier this year they would be closing, many people were devastated. Thankfully, it is under new ownership, recently purchased by the owners of Calabrian Bros Deli in the Excelsior. So what's the verdict? Pretty solid! They have rehired a lot of the former staff from the old cafe. The interior is spruced up a bit, a lot of the decorations were taken off of the walls and replaced by traffic signs from the city. Thankfully the swordfish is still there even if they are going for a more minimalist vibe. Menu is paired down a bit from before but many of the more decadent gut bombs like the Hangtown Fry and Fried Chicken Benedict remain. You can still get fresh beignets! I decided to try the corn beef hash and it was pretty good. Never thought about adding country gravy to the dish before but it was a welcome addition, probably not the type of meal you wanna eat before a lot of activity I am very glad this place has reopened and am hoping it'll remain a staple in the area for years to come
google avatar

Brandon W.

Yelp
This place is better than Plow now! Get the biscuit and a scramble! Great staff! Its clear that the team really went above and beyond in the revamp of this place. The food is still really good, similar to what it was with the perfect amount of evolution to make it better.

Danielle G.

Yelp
Troy's Corn Beef Hash, glad I tried it! Exceeded my expectations and the service is always a delight

Nancy A.

Yelp
This is about my fourth visit since the restaurant re-opened and I love it. It's so fresh and airy, the food is great the service is excellent as well. I've been to restaurant when it was Just for You and I felt it was just meh but after it reopened everything has improved for the better. The beignets are so so yummy they come out as soon as they are ready and they let you know that - they are fluffy light and perfectly powdered better than Cafe Du Monde in Nola. My sister always gets the Cowgirl plate -pancakes eggs crispy bacon, my bro in law avocado toast with eggs and grits he says very yummy and orders it every time. I want to work my way through the menu but I got the carnitas tacos one time and now I don't wanna get anything else - comes with a nicely dressed salad -very generous carnitas on the tacos. Coffee is served right away and constantly refreshed- staff checks in regularly to make sure all is well. So we'll be regulars here and hope the neighborhood will come out and support this local restaurant. I didn't want to let this secret out but they deserve all the business they can get - keep the yummy food coming!

Yelp
Food was delicious and the service was pretty good. I do plan to come again and try different plates.

Yelp
I'm so happy this restaurant reopened with new owners. The food is better than ever! The staff is friendly and welcoming. The beignets are to die for.:). I've been coming here weekly since the opening and the food is delicious. I truly love the vibe of the restaurant.

Mia Marie P.

Yelp
Just for you is back in business! We went for breakfast and everyone was so friendly! I got my ultimate favorite which is chorizo con huevos. They were so good. The potatoes are my favorite, super crispy. The pups loved their bacon and egg meals as well. so glad just for you is still here

Sara A.

Yelp
I'm so happy this place is back in business with the good people who work there that returned after its closure. They excel at comfort food with homey service at a good value. It was quick to get a table after writing our name on a paper list by the door on a Saturday around 11 a.m. I enjoyed the crab cake sandwich on sourdough and a mimosa, and my partner had the cowgirl breakfast with chicken apple sausage and coffee. They have a good selection of hot sauces. Kat and company provided excellent service as a team.

S L.

Yelp
Great! Same cooks and some of the staff from the old JFY. Good is delicious as always. Great atmosphere. Not cheap, tho.

Alicia S.

Yelp
So glad our neighborhood spot re-opened! New owners kept a lot of the original menu. The space is inviting and food is fantastic. Pancakes are just like I remembered them.

Danielle G.

Yelp
The service alone was exceptional and the food was absolutely delicious. It was obvious that the food was fresh and not from a box. We were a party of 6 that included children. They were extremely accommodating and catered to the kids. We will for sure return - the kids have already asked to go again.

Ruth m.

Yelp
I am so happy that at least a version of this place still exists. The new owners have incorporated dishes that were on the old menu, though a few things are different. I had a great scramble with a nice salad accompaniment and coffee and it felt like old times in the best possible way.

Debra M.

Yelp
Food and service great. Beignets and breakfast is what we go for and it's so good. Had French toast, scrambled eggs, fresh fruit. The beignets alone are worth a trip, rest is just as good. I highly recommend. Note this is Just For You reopened with less expansive menu with quality same and best items carried over. A regular breakfast spot for us.

Mariesa S.

Yelp
As a long time dogpatch resident I was devastated to lose Just for You. it was a huge blow to the neighborhood so I was absolutely thrilled to see it come back. it was lovely to see much of the staff return but you can immediately feel the influence of new ownership - the space has been made over and looks incredible. the menu basically stayed the same but the quality of ingredients has improved greatly. went the opening weekend and was super impressed.

Maria G.

Yelp
The food was wonderful and very tasty. Our server Zoe was wonderful. I didn't know what drink to order and was so helpful. She suggested a coconut drink that was delicious. I will definitely be coming back.
