D.C.’s Best Museum Restaurants and Cafes | Eater DC

"A highly anticipated ode to Go-Go music opening in Anacostia emphasizes food as much as sound: Angela Bethea, the former executive chef at Smoke & Mirrors and a Chopped finalist, created an intentional menu to capture Go‑Go’s roots in Black culture. “Go-Go started where it was influenced, Africa, the Caribbean, Latin America, then all the way up to D.C.,” says Bethea. “This whole genre was influenced by many places and then made it into its own. We want the menu to reflect that story.” Expect jollof rice, a Cuban sandwich, grilled plantains, various spiced meat and vegetable kabobs, and of course, D.C.’s beloved mumbo wings and half-smokes; backyard grilling and street foods play into its outdoor Go‑Go party theme. As Bethea explained, “We want people to come and enjoy the music and be able to eat while they dance.”" - Abi Newhouse

Opened in 2025 in Anacostia, this community-built space preserves DC’s official music with interactive exhibits, live sets, and a café celebrating the diaspora. Covered by the Washington Post and tourism editors, it’s a powerful, local-first cultural stop.

Wonderful newly opened gem! Just wrapped up at the museum and it's a wonderful celebration of the rich heritage of Go-Go music and DC culture. The guide was experienced, knowledgeable and he had first hand experience making the history come alive. Music is such a powerful influence and being able to learn more about this history was great. Interactive learning opportunities throughout.

The Go-Go Museum & Cafe is an incredible tribute to DC's iconic music scene. The exhibits are interactive and make the history feel alive! It's a welcoming space that celebrates the culture and community behind the music. If you love music and DC history, this spot is a must-visit!

This museum is awesome. It tells all about the history of Go-Go in DC, from beginning to present. There are some wax figures of a couple of the earlier go-go pioneers that you may interact with by asking them questions, and they will answer (through A.I. of course). The museums curator, Mr. Molten is a pure Go-Go and DC Historian who gives an outstanding tour. If you visit, be sure and ask him for a guided tour!

If you grew up in DC this museum is a must see. The history of go-go music can be obtained through a guided tour, wall and interactive displays. There's a lot of rich history paying homage to the one & only Chuck Brown and our go-go bands. There's a café that I can't wait to experience (early morning visit) and a stage to host live music. Looking forward to attending some upcoming events and continuing support by purchasing go-go merchandise.

Just had the most incredible experience at The Go-Go Museum! 🎶 Huge shoutout to our tour guide, RA, who was absolutely dope! His knowledge about Go-Go music and its rich history was impressive. Learning about the backstory of this vibrant genre made the visit truly fantastic. If you haven't been, I highly recommend it—it's a dive into the heart and soul of music that shaped a community! 🌟✨ #GoGoMuseum #MusicHistory A #ThankYouRA#T-Mobile

Yelp
ONLY OPEN TWO DAYS A WEEK - Wed & Saturday 10:00am -4:00pm I almost didn't go because I wasn't clear of visiting information before going. I went anyway...it was open! We also got a guided tour! While it is a small space (2 levels), our immaculate tour guide (Rah) ensured we knew about every nook and his personal knowledge of all the exhibits was the icing on the cake. He even demonstrated some of the music rhythms and beats on the congos (is this a DC thing to say? conga drums? lol). I can't wait for the cafe and outside space to be fully done and available to museum goers. They have merch for purchase, interactive exhibits and so much history inside those walls. I'm so glad I went. This SE DC girl who grew up a few blocks away, her heart was full! Grab some coffee or a meal nearby at some of the new restaurants. Go-Go Museum, please put a recording on your phone line with important information or FAQs for callers.

Yelp
Every Washington, D.C. resident MUST visit this museum! After all, go-go music is the city's official music. Born in D.C., go-go music has transformed fashion, art, culture, and more in D.C. and the country. This museum honors all things go-go and the people who shaped it. It's open on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 10am to 4pm for walk-in visits. It's free for D.C. residents (bring your I.D.) and $15 for everyone else. When you walk in, you'll be greeted and then left to explore two floors. The first floor gives a good introduction of go-go music and includes interactive stations to listen to go-go, hear from legends like Big G and Sugar Bear, and go-go in film. The restrooms are on this floor with go-go-themed wallpaper. In a month or so, there will be an outdoor garden and cafe with coffee, food, events, and more. The basement has even more interactive exhibits, including a space to do your own digital street art and listen to women in go-go. There's a small stage and a recording studio on this level and many go-go items from posters to records to jackets. Street parking can often be found nearby. Take the time to visit this museum. It's worth it!

Yelp
It was $15 for non DC residents and I think it was worth the cost. I love how it's interactive and informative. There are many opportunities to learn more detailed information through the touch screens. Of course there were also plenty of opportunities to actually hear the music including a musician playing in the downstairs area. I learned so much including how much go-go I actually do know-- there were pioneers and classic songs that I didn't realize were the early stages of go go until visiting here.
