The 15 Best Pies In London - London - The Infatuation

"If there was any kind of justice in the world then every pub would serve pies as good as The Camberwell Arms. The beef, ale, and bone marrow behemoth is a strong contender for the best beef pie in London which is, we’re sure you’ll agree, a very meaty title to give out. It’s got everything you want: golden brown suet pastry with a crunch, a deep, glistening sauce, and generous hunks of melt-in-your-mouth pink beef." - jake missing

The 7 Best Pie & Mash Shops In London - London - The Infatuation

"True pie and mash aficionados will rightly treat Goddards at Greenwich with suspicion. Lamb and… rosemary? Chicken, ham, and mushroom? There is, quite frankly, too much potential for flavour in these combinations. That said, there’s a mix of eager tourists and old locals in this wooden-panelled two-floor space. Traditionalists are better off sticking with the classic minced beef variety. Or, treat yourself with the chilli minced beef. Regardless of what you go for, the overriding flavour will be one of heat. Not of chilli, but of a burning third-degree burn. Credit should be given to the pastry’s crispy texture and the fresh herbiness of the parsley sauce." - jake missing

Great pie & mash in town! Food was a little extra salty and the mash a little bland but I think that's part of the pie and mash experience in the UK? So many great options at such a good price. Definitely recommend for a traditional local food. Service is very fast. That's because you queue up and get your food canteen style at the counter before finding a seat in the deceptively spacious restaurant. It was all very fast paced. I got a slight food court feeling where you always feel the need to rush and get up to let others waiting get a seat. Regardless, id totally go again! Despite lots of tables available the queue outside was sizable. It was a weekend and lunch time when we went.

We had the double pie and mash with gravy, apple crumble & custard, and 1 can of coke which in total came to £17. We shared this between 2 so for a hearty meal in London, this is fantastic value for money. We came at around 4pm on a Sunday and there was just a short queue. The service was very fast and efficient and there was plenty of seats available upstairs. The pie with the mash and gravy was pretty decent but my favourite was the apple crumble with custard! Big enough portion to share between two with a large layer of crumble and plenty of custard. It's really great that these traditional pie businesses still exist and at affordable prices. I would definitely visit again.

Nice to see a good old pie and mash shop around serving traditional British grub still as loads are shutting down all over! Food was delicious, plenty of dessert options it's hard to choose- I had the rhubarb crumble and it was so good- i will be back for the cherry pie! Reasonable prices, decent amount of seating but can get extremely busy. Staff were great, very friendly and helpful and on the ball with cleaning the tables.

Google
This was definitely a unique experience! The staff were extremely friendly and very original. The seating area and atmosphere were also really fun, and it seemed like you went back in time. The food, on the other hand, is what took a star away. The jellied eel was extremely tasty; watch out for the bones! The pie crust was crusty, the meat was tasty, but the gravy lacked depth. Anyway, I definitely recommend this place, and it has amazing value for money.

Google
Honestly I was hesitant after reading some of the reviews, but the food was good! The chili vinegar was good on the pie. For the price the pie is good. It's not bland as some people have said. Add salt and chili vinegar on it. Staff is very nice and accommodating. The dessert pie was ok maybe I should have tried their crumble. Personally I preferred the parsley sauce over the brown gravy. You can ask for which ever sauce/gravy that you want. The mash potatoes were good too. The price is extremely good for the UK. Many tourists and locals. There is also seating upstairs. Enjoyable lunch in greenwich. We had the chicken pie and the steak and ale pie.

Google
Double pie, double mash with liquor (parsley sauce) Always lovely staff working here. Food is great! I like that they do other pies incase you want something different. Prices are good and not way overpriced! I always recommend this place.

Calvin Li

Google
Old-school eatery, serving traditional pies, mash potato, and eels. Note that the "eels pie and mash" menu item has hot eels, which are not quite the same as the (in)famous jellied eels. If you want that, you need to order it separately. The menu is very flexible with how many pies and mash scoops you want, easy to order to fit your appetite. Service is very friendly. The food is...very traditional, and British food has a reputation.

Google
Was looking forward to a tasty beef pie but we found it quite tasteless, unfortunately. And way too much gravy. We had to put lots of vinegar on to add something to make it edible. Maybe that is how it supposed to be?? Not sure, but we were disappointed. Sorry.

Yelp
Inviting and cozy are two words that come to mind when I think of Goddards. Be it the unassuming ambiance or the friendly service, I felt quite welcome upon stepping in. I got their Beef Pie with Mash. The flavors were quite mild, but everything was cooked to perfection (be it the crust of the pie or the beef filling. I think that's why they provide the two different vinegar options on the tables (make sure to utilize these). Prices were quite reasonable as well. Lastly, they have plenty of dining space both downstairs and upstairs.

Yelp
The ladies here serving you are the friendliest. You walk up to the counter and place your order. We got the double beef minced pie and mashed with the brown gravy. Seating is downstairs or upstairs (where the restrooms are). Very old decor. The beef pie was very runny with not a lot of flavor to it. The mashed were decent. The brown gravy was good. Prices are reasonable.

Yelp
So when you walk up the line looks insane buts it moves and is quick serve. You take your tray and go upstairs where there in tons of seating. We got traditional pie and mash (one liquor and one gravy) liquor was good but probably would have liked gravy better. We also got the sticky toffee pudding with warm custard in too and it was stunning. Highly recommend for a dose of British warm comfort food. And very filming

Yelp
First time having traditional "pie and mash" in London. I had chicken and mushroom pie with "liquor" sauce instead of the "gravy" option. It was outstanding! Comfort food at its best.

Yelp
A great spot lunch after exploring Greenwich. Had the steak and ale pie and mash with a bottle of larger. It was only 9.50£ . It was delicious and affordable. Service was good as well. I highly recommend.

Yelp
Delicious! Who doesn't like a delicious savory pie on a cold day? The people are friendly. The service is fast. The food is comforting and delicious. Dig in and take the advice from your server. They know!

Yelp
Goddards at Greenwich is a traditional pie & mash restaurant that opened in London, England in 1890. It was founded by Alfred Goddard. 'Pie and mash' is a traditional English meal that became popular in the 1800s. The pies are actually savory and filled with minced meat such as beef, chicken or lamb. The pies originated in the 1700s as eel pies. The Thames River was once heavily populated with eels. They would be spiced, stewed in stock, and placed in the pies as a filling. These pies were often sold as a street food. By the 1800s, the price of eels has gone up so the pie filling was replaced with minced meat. Several pie shops began to appear and served pies with 'mash' (mashed potatoes). Alfred Goddard successfully ran his pie shop in Deptford for several years before passing it on to his sons Robert and George in 1936. A second shop was opened in Greenwich in 1952 and each brother managed one of the two locations. The Goddard Family still runs the business today, although only the Greenwich location remains. In addition to the restaurant, they also opened a factory which produces and distributes savory pies around England. I visited Goddards in April 2019. My wife visited there when she studied abroad and wanted me to experience traditional English pies and mash for myself. We stopped there for lunch after visiting the Royal Museums of Greenwich. After looking over the menu, I decided to order the Traditional Minced Beef Pie with Mash and my wife had the Chicken and Mushroom Pie. She told me to get gravy on everything, but we noticed that the menu listed gravy and 'liquor' as dressings. We wondered what exactly this 'liquor' was; was it alcoholic? Two locals overheard us and explained that the 'liquor' wasn't actually alcohol but rather a parsley cream sauce. They also explained that this is the more traditional dressing, not gravy. We decided to take their word for it and order liquor. Although eels are no longer stuffed into the pies, they are still a popular side dish so I ordered some eels as well. Everything was delicious and we ordered some local hard ciders to wash it down. It was so cool to have a traditional English dining experience and we will definitely go back the next time we visit London!

Yelp
Okay, so as I say this, please bare in mind I am American. The place was cute, not bad pricing, and a decent amount of space to find seating. I got the Original Pie and Mash from the menu with gravy and the Rhubarb Crumble. Personally, the Pie & Mash were just okay, but I'm used to a range of spices added usually. All in all, it was a plain. However, the Rhubarb Crumble was really good and can easily be split between 2-3 ppl like we did. Got the custard with it - again plain so I might opt for the ice cream (? I think it was). Service was polite and no issues. Food came out decently fast too. Again, I found the food plain BUT I think from my gatherings of being in London for about 3 weeks, British food tends to come across that way. So, it was worth 4 stars in British food terms if that makes sense (?)

Yelp
Great food and true British ambiance! First stop after our river tour and the food did not disappoint. Quick service and very people friendly staff.

Yelp
Took the Uber Boat to Greenwich for a the day and consulted Yelp for lunch. Goddards was the place! Get your pie and mash fix here. Comfort food at its finest! Lots of pie options (we did chicken and mushroom). Stand in line at counter. Order your pie which is taken out of oven behind the counter. Then you can opt for 2 scoops of mashed potatoes and one scoop or gravy slathering over the whole shebang. Get your bev here too, pay and take to your table. It was a little hard to manage plate, beverage and grabbing utensils before heading to table. Thank goodness the upstairs was just closed and we were directed to side room on first floor. Sticky toffee pudding has a cream-based sauce and was just OK. The Mayflower sticky toffee pudding is hard to compete with! We came for lunch and was not hungry for dinner. Too full!

Allan B.

Yelp
The Lamb and Rosemary Pie was good. I had the mash and beans on the side and it made for the perfect sized quick lunch.

Yelp
Looks a little scary outside but great pies and amazing desserts as well. An authentic English pie shop that has best pies!

Yelp
Our last day in London we took a ride up the river to Greenwich and stopped in here for a traditional British meal. We loved the history of the place and the food and staff were phenomenal. Extremely reasonably priced, we all devoured our meat pies and mash including my 4 year old son who had the kids meal of a mini meat pie, mash and a drink for £3.40!!! Highly highly recommend if you visit Greenwich
google avatar

Randall H.

Yelp
Perfectly English food experience. The mince pie is delectable--the crust perfectly crispy-chewy and the sides all well done. Yum.
google avatar

Lourdes M.

Yelp
This place was one of my unforgettable Greenwich experience! Never had traditional English pie before and i loved it. The service was very heartwarming just like how we received our pies. The pricing was inexpensive, if I could eat 2 pies because how cheap they charge each, I will - lol. The serving size was huge but if you are a big eater- a pretty standard size then. The delivery of the food was fast - I was not ready yet as I am too occupied taking photos and my name was called in less than 5 minutes. The taste - bland as how English food is known for but for a change- it was just right for me, besides it is how you want your pie be made - add more sides if needed but the one with parsley sauce was what I enjoyed most. And by the way - their London pride beer was considered one of the best beer my husband has tried. The place is small but the turn around was quick. They have second floor to backed up the number of customers trying to dine in. Tourists - highly recommended when you are in the area.

Yelp
We went for a visit in Greenwich and stopped in this institution for a quick bite. We ordered the pie and mash with the mushy peas. This hit the spot and allowed us to catch our breath while we planned our next location to hit while in Greenwich. Can't mess with tradition -

Brian B.

Yelp
Very good. Inexpensive (half the price of pubs selling pies). Very filling. Peas were (thankfully) not mushy and slightly minty. Was in need of a beer and they had lager and cider to drink Would definitely come back
google avatar

Angie Y.

Yelp
If you're a tourist looking for a traditional/ authentic place to enjoy a hearty meat pie, look no further than Goddards. As cheap as 5 pounds, you can enjoy a delicious pie stuffed with all sorts of deliciousness and mash slathered in gravy. Be sure to try both the chicken and classic beef pie topped with gravy or liquor sauce! (Highly recommend one of each). Also, when it gets to be rich, try one of their homemade condiments such as the chili vinegar!

Yelp
A delight for tourists, this pie and mash restaurant (not pub) has a long history and delivers decent food in minutes. Friendly staff and a fast effective ordering system. Go to the bar, order your food, pay and find a table. Fun, yes. Interesting, definitely. Would I return, probably not, unless I had people from out of town visiting.

Yelp
I'm not really a pie and mash kind of person but I was introduced to this place by a friend from the US on a trip to London. At the time, I didn't live around Greenwich and hadn't heard of it. Rumour had it though that they make really good (and sizeable) pie and mash. This place is historic and you can tell from the moment you step in. The rumour was true and had a nice (and very filling meal) at Goddard's a few years ago when I had the beef pie and mash (first visit). Fast forward 3-4 yeas and I live down the road from this place and it's the go-to pie and mash place or when I'm feeling "very English" and also have friends visiting. The service is fast so don't worry if there's a queue. There are communal seatings upstairs and downstairs and 'serve yourself' cutleries and sauces. On my second visit, I tried a little bit f the Eel pie from a friend and not that it's any Calamari or Octopus, it was quite an interesting and acquired taste. For me, I'll stick to the chicken and mushroom pie and mash with a Diet Coke, thank you! The observation I made however is that over the years, it seems to be that their stuffing of chicken isn't as much and I was left with more pastry than poultry.

Yelp
I came to the U.K. in search of great pies, and they fell below my expectations. I got the traditional pie, mash, and eels for 7.20£. The pie here didn't have much flavor, and got soggy after it was drowned in the parsley sauce. The eels and mash were nothing special either. They put salt, pepper, and vinegar on the tables, but even they couldn't help much. The desserts looked pretty good though, so maybe those would have been a better choice.

Keith S.

Yelp
I have tried this place several times.. there is no consistency to the food quality. Sometimes a meal will be great.. order the same thing a couple of days later and it is bordering on inedible.
google avatar

Al O.

Yelp
Good pie and mash. Not the best in London for me but definitely up there. What does make it better than most is there is a lot for seating and variety of pies and drinks.
google avatar

Gretchen D.

Yelp
We stopped here at a friend's recommendation and loved it. We got beef pies with mash and parsley liquor. Delicious, filling, and cheap!

Yelp
Just dined at this joint after getting off the Greenwich observatory hill. The meal includes beef pie, potato mash, and eel pieces that come with bone (rarely anywhere else nowadays), with a cold beer from London local brewer. Price is really humble (11.5 gbp total). It wrapped up my day three tour in London with joy and surprise. The waitress emphasized the classic or local way eating the supper, right sauce to dip, etc. Love her persistence. Btw, the brand of the local beer is called "London Pride".

Yelp
Nice location, good ambience and the staff looked after me and the Mrs very well. I would recommend and keep on doing your thing

Yelp
Omg!! This is pie and mash heaven right here. This place is not just a piece of history it's also bang on the money in every way. The vast food choice, service, atmosphere, cleanliness, prices were all brilliant. You can eat cheap and very good here and they have a massive range of pies to choose from so I'm sure any group would be please. We came here to surprise my partner who wanted to try East end pie and mash and his face was a dream the whole time. 10 out of 10!!!

Yelp
Goddards at Greenwich is famous for serving London's most traditional meal of pie mash and liquor. This meal can be traced back through the 1800's and is an important part of London's food history. Goddards is still a family run business and has been serving pie and mash since 1890. Traditional 'Pie and Mash' really is a London only dish. It's funny, that although I live north of the river Thames, the ones you get in south London, always seem to taste better. Goodards is a good example of where you can get a good traditional 'Pie and Mash'. Although you can get steak, chicken, lamb and vegetarian pies here as an alternative to the traditional pie. If you go for an alternative pie though you are missing the point. Th real pie you have to try is the traditional pie made of 100% minced beef, with mash and liquor. Splash on some malt vinegar to give it that something extra. Don't spoil it by going for gravy, always go for the liquor. It's like a runny parsley sauce, but combined with the vinigar, it's to die for. By the late 19th century, there were over 100 Pie and mash shops in London. Nowdays they are much more difficult to find. I would urge any visitor to London, to try it as it really is a unique London only dish. Probably it's most famous fan is David Beckham, who goes to a Pie & Mash shop when he visits London for his favourite meal. When I host visitors to London, I always take them on the boat from Westminster Pier to Greenwich taking in the best views an commentary along the Thames, followed by a Pie and Mash lunch at Goddards whilst in Greenwich . It really can be the best day out, with a real London feel. For a decent meal for about £5, you can't go wrong!!

Yelp
Amazing pie. Set in a very fun area in Greenwich very near the Royal Naval Academy. I had both lamb and beef and both were fabulous. Highly recommend.

Yelp
Must visit place to have pies and mash in Greenwich. Long line to get in to order your food but it is well worth it. Food is so cheap. Even have a kids menu for 3 quids. Lovely place right by the market.

Yelp
Fantastic pie & mash at Goddards of Greenwich. Great service, great value for money. The Banks veggie pie was really tasty. I will order some pies through the post from Goddards.
google avatar

Rajeev S.

Yelp
Found this bad boy on Yelp as I was just cruising through the area hungry as hell. Honestly, it was my first time eating this in England. Walked in from the chilly outside, got in line and was served almost immediately. Grabbed the chilli beef pie, mash and gravy which is exactly what I needed. Paired with my beer and the chilly oil it really heated me back up and prepared me for the rest of the day. Hope to come back at some point in the future and try one of the other pies.
google avatar

Vi W.

Yelp
In all honesty, I was a little disappointed. Firstly, the cleanliness. The place was a little grubby - tables, condiments on the table and chairs felt sticky - but Mr L told me that this was kinda expected. I looked at him dumbfounded, not sure if he was pulling my leg. He was serious. So I decided to ignore that and quickly tuck into my pie and mash, hoping that the food will make up for it. I chose the steak and kidney pie with mash (£4.40), laden with gravy. The kidney taste was strongly present but the filling only consisted of steak and gravy which I find was quite salty. The mashed potatoes and gravy had quite a floury taste and I am not sure what to make of it. Pastry, was a little burnt. Lunch was ok but was very ordinary. Goddard's has a reputation of serving up traditional pie and mash for over 100 years. The setting - nothing deluxe or lavish - also had that traditionalist aspect. It gave quite a nice welcome feeling as you walked in but when you are by the bar to order, make sure you already know what you want. Both the queue and service moves quite fast and while the service was not abrupt, it was not particularly friendly. "Full range" on the menu means pies with mash where prices start from £3.90. Goddard's pies are quite a simple and regular lunch. I do suspect the big play on being traditional helps with their trade among the tourists in Greenwich.
google avatar

George F.

Yelp
This has been a regular stop for us when visiting London for many years. I love the food and atmosphere. When they were closer to the pier, I used to get the cheese and onion pie to go. Now I typically get the steak and ale pie to stay. The people are great and the food is fantastic. I just wish I had a regular supply.
google avatar

Kelsey M.

Yelp
Hands down, my favorite meal from my London trip. We ordered a lamb and rosemary pie, and a steak and ale pie and washed it down with some ciders. Then dessert pies with ice cream. I recommend the upstairs seating area for a lovely view. With a restaurant like this, I don't understand how anybody could say that England does not have good food. These pies will be in my dreams, until next time!
google avatar

Andy F.

Yelp
Pie, glorious pie! If you're in need of a fix of perfectly crisp pie, get yourself down to Goddard's now! Excellent food, low prices, friendly and fast service, this pie shop has it all! I bring all of my foreign guests here for a taste of traditional British pie and they all leave full and satisfied. If you're familiar with traditional brown British gravy, I suggest trying their (non-alcoholic) herb-infused liquor sauce on your pie and mash. The mushy peas were not so mushy the last time I came but I'm glad I gave them another go as they were much better this time around. So happy I saved a little room for dessert as their rhubarb crumble with custard was out if this world!!! The next time I need a fix of pie, you know where to find me!
google avatar

Rebecca F.

Yelp
Found this after a walking tour and had to try the meat pie! Portion was huge and very delicious! Flaky crust and savory gravy. Counter staff is very friendly and helped us "yanks" order. Lots of locals stopping in. It was easy to tell this is a favorite of nearby workers. Several varieties of pies. On our visit they were also offering gooseberry cobbler! Yum!

Yelp
Worth the trek out to Greenwich...London visitors, take the DLR our the Thames River Line and visit Greenwich's antique shops, the Cutty Sark, and Maritime Museum. Simply the best pies and mash in the U.K.

Yelp
Yes yes yes! This place was top notch with 5 stars shining brightly! We got there just before 6pm on the Sunday just gone, and the two of us were lucky enough to get a table to ourselves. We knew what we wanted - pie and mash obviously! We were pleasantly surprised that it was only an extra 90p to add some mushy peas, so that was great! My boyfriend ordered us a steak and ale pie each, with mash and mushy peas each. I had a cup of tea (£1) and he had a bottle of Budweiser (£2.70). After he'd ordered it at the food bar, the lady behind the counter served it straight away, and there is sometimes nothing better than immediate and quick food! No waiting and low prices made the visit very successful, relaxing and enjoyable! We did try 1 jellied eel each for 50p, but they weren't for us ;-) The fish meat itself was okay, but the jelly around it was a bit strange. The pie, mash and mushy peas were so so great though, and the prices make it just sooo much better! You end up spending way way way under £10 per person, and I had about 2 cups of tea! Ooh, and I nearly forgot, we had the blackcurrant and apple crumble with custard for dessert, MMM! It was so delicious, especially with the side of ice cream I ordered, as well as the custard! It was a great visit and highly highly recommend it to anyone who loves pies and mash!!! x

Yelp
We probably ordered the entire menu, and we were not disappointed. If I lived in London, I would go here daily for dinner....and ale.

Yelp
I absolutely love this place! They have been serving meat pies and mash since 1890! The chilli meat was fantastic, very old school but delightful
google avatar

Yelp
Excellent place for English food like mash, pies and pudding. It's a family run business since 1890. All pies are handmade and freshly made daily.

Yelp
We walked around and finally decided to eat here. And that may have been the shitties decision we did that day. We ate some kind of steakpie which i usually love but this was so discuting that none of us could finish our meels. (party of 4) We sat uppstairs and i guees the cleaning personal had the day of, it was plates and leavings as all over and rhe table we cleaned our self was really sticky. The only positive thing i can say is that the personal was nice and friendly. But maybe they just had a bad day when we were there...
google avatar

Yelp
It was a rainy, damp day (go figure in London) and I'd just finished a tour of the Greenwich Observatory and the National Maritime Museum (highly recommend). I was looking for something warm and casual and not fussy (no white table cloth and no one hovering over me). I saw groups of college students and locals pouring into this place and fell in line behind them. I grabbed a tray with no clue what to order (they have pie and mash with eels on their sign... they have many "non-eel" things). I find honesty works well in places like this so I when the very friendly lady asked me what I would like to have I told her I'd never been here before but I like beef. She suggested beef pies and mash. I had a "double pie and mash" and a beer. The beef pies are small so two makes a nice filling meal. There are two gravy options and she informed me that the white/herb gravy was traditional so who am I to argue with tradition. I have no idea what was in the gravy but it was mmmmmmm. It was actually light and flavorful and just added some moisture and seasoning to the whole dish without weighing it down. The meat pies were perfect. The crust was flakey and buttery and the filling was well seasoned. I took my tray upstairs and sat in a window seat and watched the rain while I enjoyed my warm, comforting meal. The place was full of laughter and other people enjoying each other's company and their food. It was an amazing memory and meal for my last day in England on this particular trip. I plan to come back here the next time I'm in town.

Yelp
I took the boat there just to visit this place and eat a great meat pie. The woman behind the counter was very helpful and I got a plate of meat pie, mashed, and a nice ice cold beer for like 10 bucks!! It was worth the trip and the rest of the area is nice as well, so get on the boat at the embankment so you can see all the attractions, BBen, parliament, Tower Bridge, etc and get off in Greenwich for a couple hours, and make sure you find Goddards for a meat pie!

Yelp
This is a very quaint pie shop. Goddard's is a classic old English-style pub like pie eatery where there's a huge variety of pie fillings, flavours and accompaniments. I had the classic steak and ale pie with mash which I would give a 6/10 as what mainly let it down was the pastry which wasn't nearly as flaky as I would of hoped. All in all was a satisfactory meal but probably wouldn't go out of my way to eat here again.

Yelp
First time here after a walk to Greenwich observatory. Service was friendly and efficient and the food was good and filling.

Yelp
Loved this place. Good, cheap, comfort food. My husband and I both had the beef pie with mash and gravy...only £4.20 each. The crust was flaky and buttery and very good. They had old church pews for benches at the tables which added to the ambiance. My husband said it was the best meal he has had so far in England.

Yelp
The pie here is delicious, but for me the experience and the staff were the real winners. This is no frills, traditional English fare served just the way it should be. Pie and mash swimming in gravy and a nice cuppa PG tips. What more could one want?

Yelp
Quite a pleasant meal for a Chinese who wants to try something British. I particularly like the hot eels.
